- If you do any sort of yarn crafting, you typically have little balls of leftover yarn. I absolutely love to use them to make baskets!
This project is perfect for those who like to view television or hold conversations while crocheting as once you get past the rounds with increases, it's really easy to work up.

I made granny squares up to 4 rounds whenever I had leftovers from a project and threw them in a basket. When I needed a wedding or baby gift- I pull out my grannies and design ann afghan- adding more rounds then using a neutral to edge each square and join and border. Because I already had started squares, it worked up quickly. 😊

Could you share with me how you join your squares? I'm making my sunburst granny squares now but will need to learn to join them!
@@marytrisler576 I do several types of joins:1. Using a yarn needle I sew the squares into vertical rows- then sew the strips of grannies to creat the afghan. then I add a border.
2. Using a slip stitch to join , or 3. Using single crochet which creates pretty ridges between the rows. These are the easiest joins.
I made a bunch of throw rugs a couple years ago doing the same thing. Its so muddy here and they are easy to throw in the wash. Good way to keep from wasting yarn. Thank you

Please remember to get up every twenty minutes and run upstairs and down twice, or jog on the spot for two minutes so you don’t get problems with veins when you’re old 😅.
I once did a project that was so absorbing, I didn’t move my legs for hours at a time and it was very damaging. Just a helpful hint, sent with love x

I've made afgans for my best friend, my mom and my 2 daughters. One of them was a scrapbuster afgan from a huge pile of different yarns. It was my favorite.
I think I would need a muuuuch bigger basket to get through any significant amount of my yarn stash. Lol I did love how it folds into a beach bag looking tote though! Very good idea for beach or farmer's market days!
You could make a big basket to store more of your stash in 😉

I love your idea of a small shopping bag. I think if using several colours of cotton for a bag (as it doesn’t stretch out of shape), you could even make decent sized bags for your weekly shop.
I had tons of scrap yarn and made a decent sized basket, I had planned on storing my bigger left over balls, or to keep my WIPs in. However I left it sitting on the couch when I suddenly got sleepy (I am an insomniac and when sleepiness hits, I stop everything and get to bed hoping for a bit of sleep lol). When I got up, intending to carry on, my cat, Apache, had decided it made quite a comfy new bed lol. So when I finally persuaded her to get out of it, I finished making it and gave it to her. I added a nice soft squishy pillow using my excess plushie yarn and am currently working on a dome with a kitty entrance to fit to the top of the bed as she is 17 and gets cold a little more easily. With the dome over the top, it keeps the warmth in better. But I have made a note to myself, no matter how sleepy I get, put the basket away or the cat will steal it…if she fits, she sits, doesn’t matter if it is boxes, crochet or knitted bags, or crocheted baskets. 🤣

Just because there leftover you can make a granny squares blanket. A pet basket to keep warm, I suppose with a lower front would be great.
I love making Granny squares with leftover yarn balls. A pet basket would be a great idea also! Maybe I'll have to make one in a future video. My cat can always use another bed. 😂
These little scrap balls are perfect for either Navajo or Apache Tears patterns! I’ve done 7 including one in all white!

Pet beds brilliant.
I think I would sort the colours first, so that the base is darker and the colours get lighter as you go up, finishing perhaps with a couple of black or brown rows on the top edge. Alternatively sort in rainbow order. I realise that the whole point of this is its randomness, but it does make it rather homogeneous and "muddy", as if you've just mixed all the paints in the paintbox.

You can start forming the sides of the basket whenever you feel the base of the basket is big enough to do so.
You can make a circular rug from scrap.leftovers of wool.

Has anybody ever said anything to you about the way you hold your left hand with the tension I've had so many people ask me why I do that around my little finger That's the way I was taught by my grandmother and you're the only person that I have ever seen besides me did it that way. I like this idea of the basket for the scraps I may have to go digging for scraps
I've never had anyone mention the way I hold tension with my little left finger, but I have been told I crochet like a knitter. 😂

I love this basket but how does it suddenly go from a flat circle to a round shape? Are you decreasing as you go - or does the yarn naturally shape up like this? I’m very new to crochet btw but wouid love to make one of these x
Once you make the base the size of your liking, you simply stop doing the required increases to keep the base a circular shape. Then you just start making single crochet stitches without the extra single crochet stitch every x number of stitches and the sides just build themselves. I hope that helped!
Loved your basket!!! When we moved I found that none of my living room pillows were the right color scheme for the rental apartment. So, I took all my scrap yarn plus yarn from some crochet items I no longer wanted, frogged them, and covered the pillows with this method. Now they match any color scheme one could have. It was perfect. If you have crochet items that you no longer want or use, frog them and recycle the yarn. It’s a great way to save $$$ and still enjoy crocheting. There's no limit to the ways you can recycle yarn!

You video mesmerized me. Love the idea of this basket! Chaining is the most secure method for me, tho. I refuse to risk any mishap with magic circles, even if I think I'm careful enough.
Thank you! Magic circles definitely make me a little wary, but so far so good. I make sure to weave the end back and forth a bunch of times and it hasn't failed me yet. I consider it a long term experiment. 😅

I just saw they had something 'similar' to this in the store, but it wasn't crocheted, it was done with plastics and had a crotcheted illusion to it.
They wanted $20 for the thing, and it's stupidly small. And when I picked it up I felt the thing cracking in my hand and it smells horrible.
So
I'll make my own.
Is this why we're being conditioned to stop learning how to do these crafty things like this? If we don't know how to make things for ourselves, then we'll stupidly buy the wrecklessly wasteful junk.

I make not so “scrappy” scrap baskets when I crochet baby blankets and things for a new family member to colour coordinate a little basket or two for the baby’s bedroom. So I order an extra ball or two of the yarn I am making the baby things with so I can them make a “scrappy”, yet colour coordinated basket. I make a small catch all one and a larger one for keeping on the changing table to keep all the bits and pieces handy but so they do not fall iver onto the floor if knocked accidentally. They seem to go over well as each new expectant family member lets me know what colours they would like the baby blanket and if the room has other colours that can be added to the baskets lol. When you get requests, I take it as a sign that they like it ☺ I just wish my family would slow down a little on the baby making. 14 great nieces and great nephews born in 2023 so far and another 5 to go and each kniws I always make a baby blanket or two for each baby, so most of my crocheting this year has been baby orientated.
When I need a break from bigger projects, then I usually use up my scraps making keychains, wristlets, small amigurumi things, bookmarks, Barbie doll rugs, blankets and clothes for the kids, and so on. If there is only tiny amounts, I will use them to make small cone shapes and then use several different coloured cone shapes, sewing one cone’s end shut to use as a tail, and thread the cones together on top of each other to make little fish keychains, sewing on little eyes or adding tiny safety or google eyes. Barrettes, bracelets, reading glasses necklace to keep them close at hand, necklaces and chokers, earrings, wind spinners (great one for using different colours together), and so many more little things for small bits that are left over. I am currently using tiny amounts, of about 2 feet, to make mushroom caps, then use colours I have more lengths of left from ther projects to make the body/stem? Of the mushroom and stuff that (often with the left over snipped bits and pieces that cannot be used to crochet with mixed with my stuffing) before sewing on the mushroom caps.
Or I make little flower or heart appliqué and then add a little pair of leaves for the flower, and a contrasting border for the heart, before making a chain (usually about 40-50 chains) ending with either a small leaf, heart or ball at the end of the long chain to make a quick and easy bookmark. They take minutes to make and use up those tiny left over bits of pretty much any colour. And if you sell at craft fairs and markets, they are great sellers that entice other sales, especially at the holidays. I sell them quite cheaply or give them as a freebie, thank you gift if someone has bout a couple of the bigger items.

What do you do if you have to wash it? Or doesnt it feel weird when the texture is different?
To be honest, I haven't washed it yet. 😅 I would imagine it would go about the same as when you wash any yarn-made object. Just follow whatever steps you usually do when washing items made with whichever yarn you choose.
The texture of the finished object does vary depending on the texture of the yarn used. I think it adds a fun element to the finished piece.
Hi there. A technique I first saw used to co-ordinate a quilt made from coloured fabrics that really could not have been seen together was to dye the finished quilt top 😢with tea or coffee or a combination of the two. Although I agree that your projects looked great others might like to try the tea or coffee. Just one hitch, non-natural fibers might need a mordent specifically for synthetics to make the dye stay and not wash out of the finished item.
I remember someone mentioning the way to see if yarns have the same gauge (when you've lost the wrapper) is to make a loop of one yarn, thread the 2nd yarn through the loop making sure both yarns are at least 10" long enough when looped - because you now twist them in opposite directions. When they are just about to twist up on themselves, pull them taut (you may need a helper for this part), run your fingers over the entire strand WITH your eyes closed and if you can't feel where they are looped, then you've got two yarns close to the same gauge.

What makes a basket start forming sides? A different stitch?
Same stitch, just no increasing every few stitches.
You don’t have to cut anything off but you have to do is extend the yarn and just crochet right over it. That’ll support the basket even more you can even use strips that are a foot long. All you do is crochet over it I think that’s what I did I used a secondary yarn and I crocheted over everything. I should post when I did quite interesting.

Maybe tighter stitches? I've made a few of these baskets and didn't have issues with the sides not being stiff enough. They are made of yarn, so they will have some flexibility, vs using typical basket-making materials.
Are you sc around and around and just knot no specific way
After the increase rounds to make the base, it's all sc stitches around until making the handles, where you employ some chains. I knotted these using a magic join method I found on TikTok.

I have crocheted baskets before, but they were very flimsy. Does the three strands of yarn make it stand better? Or do you do something to make it more sturdy?
It's fairly sturdy with the three strands. I also crochet very tightly, so that probably helps it stand straight.
Your leftover/scrap yarn is the amount of yarn I have new and unused.

Here is what the pattern says:
"R1 - Make a Magic loop and sc 6 stitches into it
R2 - 2 sc into every st
R3 - (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around
R4 - (sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st) around
As a general rule, with every round, you work one more regular stitch between your increase stitches."

To build the sides of the basket, you just stop adding increases. This will start building the sides. At first, it is a little wonky, but after a few rows of sc stitches, the sides become evident.
