JANE YESSSSS!!!! Also about the story, the album doesn’t actually have an overarching story imo. To me each song is a self contained story that uses a relationship as a metaphor for the message. Like video being about chasing the light at the end of the tunnel. Or census designated being about the music industry. And to answer your question about the next album, Jane said in interviews that each album is gonna be a completely different genre, so jazz may be the direction she goes 👀👀
Ahhh thanks for clarifying. For some reason I always think there's some bigger overarching story, when in reality its never that complicated haha. Also a Jane Jazz album would feed the streets
Yeah she’s talked about this a little from what I’ve seen! All the songs are kind of self contained but revolving around a similar feeling. I know in two specific cases that Census Designated (the song) is about the music industry and Video is about a girl who falls in love with a pornstar she sees online and starts to stalk him
@@qwert_511 in one small interview Jane also talked about backseat girl being about feeling inconvenienced by someone else’s troubles and how toxic of a thought process it is.
I will say..,.. with the last album when she first started it, in interviews she talked about Ethel Cain being a huge inspiration, and it seems like that was very indicative of what we got with census designated.... and she has said recently on her reddit AMA that shes been listening to a lot of the new Slauson Malone album..... so i mean maybe some kinda neo-psych or hypnagogic pop sorta album next???? Would be insane to hear from her I feel.
I can't believe that this guy doesn't get more recognition, he has introduced me to some of my favorite artists and albums and I'm sure that this is the same for many other people. Keep up the great work.
Jane's my favorite artist of all time. Frailty since it came out was my favorite album, and Census Designated hits a different itch that i love as well, even if not quite as much. I spent MONTHS when frailty came out trying to piece together what the story is in the album, and it genuinely took me months upon months to hit upon something that made sense with all the other themes... and man it was really strange.... jane almost writes her songs like she doesnt want you to know what theyre about.... and she talks about feelings by using characters who go through things she may not have gone through but portray exactly how she feels, just by telling it through a different lens.... And I think what I love about Census Designated so much is specifically the lyricism and how Jane really takes that lyrical experimentation and turns it up to one trillion.... it's honestly funny because like with Frailty I did the vast majority of the annotations on Genius for it, but with Census Designated I honestly just find myself at a loss for words and feel like the words just really speak for themselves.... theyre so horrific and vivid and have such excruciating detail, and that combined with the production that is way more stripped back than frailty lead to a very uncomfortable experience that I feel like most people will not be ready for, especially people who are more used to her brighter sound from her past. But oh my god, if you take the time to really fully indulge yourself into Census Designated.... it is SO worth it. It grew on me a lot after release, and I honestly feel like Census Designated and Contingency Song are two of her best songs period. Anyways, really happy to see more vids on her.... I was about to make my own video because like theres such a lack of them for Jane lol. I love everything she does and will be anticipating everything she eventually does. She's one of the greatest artistic visionaries in my opinion.
Woah this is easily the biggest comment I think anybody has written on my channel lmao. I saw the other comments you posted as well, appreciate your insight a lot. I think it's a shame that there's a lot of people that are a little scared off by Census Designated cause as you said once you really get into it, it's a brilliant piece of work. And yeah it had to grow on me too, I wasn't too high on it on my initial listen of the album but upon replaying it over and over my issues just kind of started to vanish. Really excited to see where Jane goes next, and yeah I wanted to give Jane some love given that there aren't a whole lot of vids talking about her. Thank you for subbing, really appreciate all of it.
god i love hearing people talking about jane theres never been an artist ive felt so obessed over, frailty felt like it was a conglomeration of every music genre i liked thrown together, and her inability to not constantly innovate makes it impossible to get bored of her music. the only sad thing about being a jane fan is i know one day she will be too big of an artist for me to afford going to her shows but for now i am absolutely eating everything jane up.
it’s bittersweet seeing hyper pop phase out of the musical landscape a bit, but im SO excited to see hyper pop artists kind of embrace new sounds while melding and fusing it with the dna we know them from. hyperpop got me through the pandemic and i think it served its purpose for that crazy time but i think we’re all starting to finally process and contemplate post-covid and it shows with the types of music people are releasing. 8 year old me is ecstatic that electronic genres are referencing emo and early 2000s scene culture a bit as well as nu-metalish stuff. Ty for the video 🖤🖤
I love how I've never listened to any of the artists you talk about and you still hypnotize me into watching every single video of yours by being so interesting
Wow! Happy to be the first video from music youtube you've seen, not to be humble but I fear I set the bar pretty low compared to other creators bahahah really glad you enjoyed my video
Great video! Damn, I love to keep finding people talking about Jane, her evolution is amazing. Census Designated will mark a new era just as Frailty did, few Shoegaze Albums sound like what he did, the next album will be different, she clarified in an interview that she doesn't like to stick to just one thing and stated (before CD) that the next album would be very different, and it was! Btw your voice is very pretty
It’s a collab that seems to make too much sense yet both artists want to avoid lol. Both of them have the versatility to kinda do whatever they want if they did collab
I adore both albums and even if the production of census sounds and feels too 'digital' still (impossible to categorize into 'shoegaze'), al least it introduces young listeners to the layers and history of dream pop, shoegaze, and all the ramifications and subcategories attached. Excited to see what's next for her.
@@ThatSenioGuy Census Designated zones are like usually small populations of people in a county in the US, like smaller communities within cities, from what i know. ANd sometimes the county or city laws dont necessarily apply to them, depending on what it is. but yeah theyre like zones within a city essentially... which makes sense because I'd imagine most of the places Jane went on her roadtrip were off kilter census designated zones. These smaller, forgotten places in America.... kinda fits the lyricism as well imo

You know, I did consider a Wallsocket review around the same time as I was making this Jane video, but other plans and ideas got in the way, and I didn't think I'd have enough new things to add to the conversation. But Wallsocket is really good! It made me appreciate underscores a lot more, Geez Louise especially ended up being one of my fav songs of 2023
I read a bunch of interviews and checked her genius annotations and my general takeaway is that there's less of a plot running through the tracks as much as there's a theme holding it all together. It's a study of Jane's psyche, using abstract representations and vivid imagery that's not supposed to be read literally For instance, Jane says Video is about "striving for the light at the end of the tunnel," and I think it's meant to be taken specifically as desperate, blind striving. I feel like "do you see me in the video" means two things at the same time: "do you want me?; do you see ME in the video (the porno)?" but also "do you only see me as 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰?" The girl wants to be fully desired by the guy, and despite being nothing but used by him when they finally meet, she's still holding out hope that she is. TLDR she's chasing something unattainable, which I think is meant to parallel how Jane feels in some sense She clarified on genius that the title track's actually about the music industry. With that hint in mind, lyrics that look like they could be about grooming or sexual abuse instead reveal themselves as imagery being utilized to better convey how predatory that environment is This is all just a testament to Jane's writing ability tho. I think Census Designated is incredible because it's super layered and shows off an insane level of maturity
I completely see your point. In fact, I had that as my main issue my first listen. But as I've gone through multiple relistens, the lines have kinda blurred and the song structure thing just doesn't affect me anymore really
Amazing album, one of my favourites of the year. What I meant in the video wasn't a lack of quality early 2023, it was more just that nobody was really releasing any music

personally don't think of frailty as a happy go lucky album, maybe that's just me though
its themes probably aren't so bright but sonnically its a lot more lighthearted than census designated

unpopular opinion but buzzcut, daisy is one of my favs of hers
Census is def top 5 for me this year, only thing holding it down is the fact that all the tracks follow the same structure.
