  • There are a lot of different ways to make a concept album and two recent albums serve as spectacular examples of how wildly different approaches can end with equally great results.
    Enjoy 💘

    when these two albums came out i immediately thought of them as sister albums. it was such a nice surprise to see the jane remover feature on underscores’ album too.

    Census Designated reminds me a lot of Joni Mitchell's Hejira. Both are loose concept albums inspired by travel, the trappings of relationships and abuse, and the spirit of artistic reinvention. Joni also started writing from the perspectives of constructed characters, eschewing hooks to hit on themes and tell stories.

      That’s an interesting take. Unfortunately I thought the Jane Remover album was incredibly banal

    The fact that 1, Jane Remover is literally featured on track 11 of Wallsocket,
    And 2, Both albums dropped within a month of each other,
    Makes the connection/comparison even more real

    yknow that moment when you discover a youtube channel youve never seen before and their content is so up your alley that you now have an entire catalog of new videos to bingewatch?
    yea
    awesome video! i think its also interesting that Jane appears on "Wallsocket", and maybe I'm reading to much into this, but "Uncanny long arms" feels like the most loose and vague track on the album from a writing perspective. The so-called "long arms" are left very open to interperation, and i wonder if Jane's writing style may have influenced Aprils while making this song. just a thought tho :3

      Omg I'm so glad you liked the video! I do think there's Jane influence all over uncanny long arms obviously but it never felt out of place when I listened to Wallsocket

    This was a really good video!! I'm glad both of these albums are getting the praise they deserve. I'm currently writing a big analysis of the story of Wallsocket and then I'm gonna do a similar thing with Census Designated. Both of these albums are immensely fascinating and personal but for very different reasons and I love it.

    Wowww this video was great! Love the mention of Sly & the Family Stone, that's such a fascinating record. I remember I heard that one and was so confused at first, but after I learned a bit about the tension around Sly at the time of release, between the label pressuring them to put out music and the Black Panther party pushing the band to use their music to push their political agenda, it's amazing that the resulting album was anywhere near as good as it ended up being! I love the skeletal sound of it compared to other funk bands of the time, it feels like Sly's performing from inside of a coffin.
    Also for other albums that should be included with "modern concept-ish albums", I think yeule's softscars should be in the conversation. It's an album with multiple layers of meta-ness, and yeule reveals vulnerabilities throughout the songs and finds an inner power by the end. Fish in the Pool stuck with me for DAYS after hearing the album, even though it's just yeule playing the piano for a minute and a half..
    Subbed, this is the sort of music conversation i'm here for!

    • @lavsmusiccorner
      @lavsmusiccorner  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty familiar with softscars! Even though I wasn't head over heels for all the music on the album there are so many conceptual strings that I enjoyed untangling.

    I didnt really know where to put this opinion, but I guess it's good for me to see other people's opinions on it.
    I am one of the main people that caused Jane to say to stop interpreting Census Designated (the song) as a song about intimate abuse because of a caption I made on Genius, and I think that the song lost its impact when she said this. It also doesnt really make any conceptual sense, as the rest of the songs are explicitly about intimate abuse. I still love the album and that song, I just don't enjoy it as much as the other songs mainly because it doesn't really fit into the flow with baving such a differing theme.
    Hell, it could have been both abuse in the music industry and intimate abuse, and that might be what it is. If not, I just feel like it's not as powerful with context.

    Honestly I'm a sucker for pretentious self-indulgent nonsense 😂and mostly listen to "progressive rock" but it's insane how much Wallsocket grabbed me considering how little I expected to like it, and how drastically different it is from the other music I like, but since then I've found so much other great conceptual stuff like Clipping and Death Grips. I haven't listened to Jane Remover yet but I'm really interested to.

    • @lavsmusiccorner
      @lavsmusiccorner  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I feel like that's been a common take on Wallsocket. A lot of the narrative elements and thematic cohesion is clicking with a lot of people who aren't conventional hyperpop fans
