Pajero Rear Door Rattle - fix it in under 2 minutes

  • Do you have a rear door rattle on your pajero, especially when towing a van or trailer ? This fix should sort you out in just a couple of minutes and all you will need is a screw driver to get it done. I was reminded of this easy adjustment recently on the Newcatle Hunter Pajero forum owners face book page and though, this one was worthy of a quick video, since it became obvious, it wasn't quite the common knowledge I thought it was. I hope this helps.

    Thankyou Mr Monkey. I've been tinkering with my Pajero rear door for months and only managed to stop the rattle for a short while and then it returns. I'll 'screw the bstd' tomorrow!

      No worries David, seems to work for most . Might need to try a couple of times to get it right but so long as you get good contact between those 2 bits, you should be all good. let me know how you go.

      @@DENMONKEY Hi Brett, you might remember a few weeks ago I had an annoying rattle in the head of my gearshift lever - I temporarily fixed it with a rubber band around it but when Paj went in for his recall (driver front suspension) I asked the Mitsu workshop about it and they fixed it with a couple of drops of glue ... and didn't charge me! How about that? I coulda dun that myself but wasn't game to try it in case I made things worse for any future gearbox repairs. All good now and the rear door rattle fix is good too. Thanks.

    After a few goes at adjusting I still had the noise. After consulting the vic paj forums, I found I was missing 2 rubber stoppers (looks like you're missing the one above the lock on the door) They are part numbers MB270607 and MU720011. I've just fitted them, hopefully they stop the remainder of my rattles! Hope this tip might help someone else watching the vid :)

    All well and good but it does not fix the situation where the door weight and the weight of the spare wheel has moved the door hinges. Resulting in the door sagging and hitting the latch striker. This is usually identified by an uneven gap down either side of the door. One side the hinged side will have a wider gap at the top of the door and a narrower gap at the bottom of the door and most evident just before the door is latched closed.
    This will require the hinge to be adjusted so that there is an even gap top to bottom on both sides and the same gap on both sides of the door ~4mm.
    It may need the top hinge to be moved out 1-2mm or the bottom hinge moved in 1-2mm or top moved out 1mm and bottom moved 1mm in. When adjusting use some masking tape on three sides of each the hinge as a guide of it's current position and as to how much you move the hinge. make sure that you correctly torque the bolts and use some blue loctite. If the door has been knocked around you may have to adjust the striker if the door does not fully latch and lock.

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This won't fix any fundamental issues that may exist such as stuffed door hinges etc, but as you can read from the comments, there's quite a few out there that have encountered the rattle where this simple fix sorts it out for them. If it's something more serious, they'd need to look at some of the remedies you have suggested. I was glad mine was one of the easy fix ones. you don't get that too often.

    I just replaced the lower hinge (hinge pin had sheared) and broken handle mechanism on nl 2000 paj rear door. Took about 2hrs to get it off and back together but didnt lubricate anything cos im a dik and didnt know what i was doing. I closed it and it did not open. So after a few beers i climbed inside, pull off inside trim, drown the mechanism and the whole area with wd40. I didnt know where so i just sprayed everywhere of importance. Actioned the inside handle, lock and external handle, by pressing down on the spring loaded mech behind the handle thingy, nothing. I then had another beer then decided to take off the spare wheel to relieve a little pressure off the lock and repeated the process inside grabbed another beer and after about 5 mins, tadaaa, it opened. I could see with the door catch thingy on the car and the door latch were misaligned and was jamming so i adjusted those two screws on the door catch higher and it closed and opened beautifully (the screws were tight af so sprayed with wd, wrapped the screw driver with an old shirt and used a pair of multgrips on the screwdriver to exert enough turning strength as well as pushing on screw driver to loosen) By now i was half cut and decided to call it a day. Ive found since that graphite lubricant doesnt attract dust like the wd40 does but the wd40 worked to get it opened. Cheers mate from western qld. 😊

    Hi Brett as you asked I have put together a few want to knows about the Pumkin Android from my perspective
    Map functions street vs 4wd functions, - I ended up using street as it was better at getting distance calculations travelling
    Modem - wasn't in my options so what are the pros and cons? what to buy?
    Usb cables - 1 or two - are they long enough to make it outside to the dash somewhere cause that is where I would like to place it
    Reverse Camera - does it have options for two cameras?
    OBD2 - setup never used it before, you have Torque on phone and you can dial in on the pumkin? what else you use it for
    Wifi - is this just for your phone connection?

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Les, let me cover what I can in a comment but when I get to the video, I'll cover these off as well.
      I use a couple of mapping software. for off road I run the locus app which allows multiple maps to be loaded, but thus far, I've only used the freebies from the app, but I have also loaded up shonky maps which is a topo map.
      The main function that I like of the locus is the track recording. You can also switch maps pretty easy. You can use online or offline maps. For on road I use an app called Waze. Bloody brilliant. You can do voice for inputting routes etc and its pretty reliable. It has the usual find something local type thing but the real benefit of this is that when you encounter something on the road, like a cop, an accident or traffic, you input that into the device. It then shares that info with all other waze users in your area real time. Conversely , all of those alerts etc show up on your device as you come up to them. We can't have radar scanner, so this is the next best thing. I will also use this info on traffic input by other users, to route you around heavy traffic etc. nice feature .
      Modems, you can either hotspot your phone or use a 4g modem like I have. Anything will work here that takes a cellular network and converts it to wifi. I got the unit I'm using for nix from work. it was going into the bin. obviously the better the unit, the better your coverage will be. Provider dependent of course. I've got a few antennas to test soon to see if I can improve the signal when out camping. The battery on mine is buggered, so I just connect it via usb to power. The headunit has 2 usb sockets and 2 micro sd slots. The USB is handy for USB drives to store music for playback or puting apps on. I've found they don't do much for charging devices but can maintain them whilst plugged in. I haven't tested both for that though. just my results from the one I used. You can get a 4g dongle that works when plugged in and provides access when plugged in, but I believe it can be a crap shoot getting the right one. I have a reversing camera plugged in and it has 2 input rca if I remember correctly. I don't recall if it was like a dvd input or for a second camera. I'll suss the options to choose inputs and see what i can figure out.
      I've got a cheap ODB reader off ebay 14 bucks odd. I can connect it to the pumpkin to run torque on it BUT, you can only have one bluetooth device connected at a time. So if I want my phone connected , the obd wont work and visa versa. It does look great on the dash though with all the temps etc running. I'll do a run down on the app too. Wifi will connect to anything with a wifi signal. hotspot the phone, 4g modem or just to your home network when in range. When out and about though, you want something to take the 4g signal and convert it to a wifi signal for it to work . I think there are models which will take a sim card and work directly but I couldn't tell you which ones. Hope that helps, keep em coming if you think of more and again, I'll try and work a video on as soon as I can, but I'll cover these questions, cause I figure others will be wondering the same. cheers Brett

    Brett, Are you running strut spacers on your front struts? I've a similar set up to you, bar, winch and plates, suspension is upgraded from factory but it still leans forward on level ground. I'm wondering should I upgrade the springs on the front struts or just leave as is. The CV anlges would be my biggest concern. Might just sneak a peak at someones untouched pajero and see what angles the CVs are at from the factory.

      @DENMONKEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dave, no spacers on mine. Altho I may look at them later to bring the front back up. I put the bar etc on after I did the upgrade. I should have done it the other way around. I did go with heavy duty springs though. I think they have 'extra' heavy duty now, so may consider them too

Turns out I had just broken a fan shroud and the fan was clipping it when turning. they were going to charge me 500 plus to open her up. Still cost me 300 for them to figure that one out. They wanted another 600 to fix the bits of broken shroud . 600 for a bit of plastic. Not much wonder people avoid them.

      haven't heard about the mirror one to be honest. Are you sure its coming from the mirror ? which side ? I lost the back of my passenger side one a little while ago in the bush. I'll have alook in there and see if there is something there which could rattle ?. I'll get back to ya

    Hey Brett, loving all your videos and giving me ideas...which the other half isn’t so keen on!
    A couple of general questions though:
    1) do you have a reverse camera on the Paj and if so, where have you installed it
    2) did you make your roof cage yourself or is it another great ebay find.
    Cheers

      Hey Luke, yeah sorry about costing you money mate. I'll try and do more free stuff 😁.. I have a reversing camera on the back but do need to put a different one on. The one I have is a number plate mounted ebay one but there is one which attaches to the number plate light up under the spare wheel carrier. Still an ebay special but gives it a bit more protection compared to where it is. Rod cage is an aluminum one and picked it up off Gumtree. I see a few of them around. So it's nothing unique. Cheers Brett
