- Vincent Van Gogh is just one of scores of artists, writers, musicians and other creative people who are known or believed to have suffered from mental illness. What goes on in the brain that might create a relationship between mania and creativity? Rita Braver reports.

I once did a pastel sketch of Van Gogh's Man in the Straw hat at the Norton Simon Museum. There was a lot of detail in that portrait
Very interesting subject…thank you for delving in a bit
Anything like migraines, sensitive teeth, even tinnitus can give waves of depression and when the pain subsides and there is a feeling of recovery, mood is elevated and being creative is an outlet of the euphoria. Not unlike the symptoms of bipolar.
You present this as though you have the definitive facts on this man. I really want to scream a times It was his Childhood Epilepsy of his lower temporal lobe that molded his brain with electrical storms. This left him creative as well as psychically gifted. He like many was astral projective and this would happen at length when he would be creative at the same. This is why he put himself in the Sanitarium. Vincent's life is mythology that is a story and nothing more. I was fortunate to read hi autobiographical time line meant for the next one like him. He knew it would be an American!
Anthony Fowler yes!!!!!!! Finally someone who knows!!!!!!!
I am him. I have Epilepsy and produce works based on the study of Vincent van Gogh. You have some things right. I can talk more about it in an interview video. Leave a comment if you want to see Van Gogh copy painting, originals, and hear more about Epilepsy. I'll make a video for you if you respond.
Amy Winehouse, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Alexander McQueen, Robin Williams, Jean Michel Basquiat...
And don't forget Anthony Bourdain. Robin Williams ultimate demise is one that's especially heartbreaking imo. It's like, how can a person who on the outside is so happy & funny & full of life be so incredibly sad & despondent (coupled with health problems) to the point of suicide on the inside? But then I'm like, how can I wonder about him when I myself am this way? Mental health is a much bigger problem than what's known.
I think I am going to scream! Vincent made a volentary admittance to that mental hospital for a REST cure!
You can see from my last name he is a fellow country man of mine and being a painter myself, do not like to
see him "run down" in this way! Also, I too think his death was from another kid's hand!
Great
The use of the word "madness" is totally inappropriate.
the point of The Cross is that everything costs something !
Very nice vidéo
and what they call 'mental illness', is just life, life or very intelligent and genious poeple who just get this world.and when you get this world, all good and bad sides, and chaos of it, you do suffer. but suffering is not always mental illness. God, so many of this stigmas are so conditioned by narrow minded people, whic are majority. Common sense really isn't common obvi
my esp led me here.
💓
Wrong, wrong, you are wrong people. Vincent was psychic from Temporal lobe epilepsy that left him with abilities. He did not cut his ear off he did not shoot himself. the pontifications of the so called enlightened are sickening. Ernest Hemingway had a form of that same epilepsy and there are a slew of creatives from inventors, poets, and writers etc. When one person has abilities that might conflict with present day beliefs it is easy to discredit that individual by calling him crazy or sick. The story of Vincent will be rewritten in time and the “Epilepsy” has a storied history by itself.
Don't wanna die 2 young
What madness? This is all mythology Vincent was “Psychic” form the Temporal Lobe Epilepsy of his childhood. The problem is Vincent could not set his boundaries. His creativity and paintings brought on the psychic abilities. HIs execrated manic production brought on “Trances. Vincent had himself committed to Saint Remey. As for the Ear, Vincent did not cut it off and it was his roommate of the time that did. The death of Vincent Van Gogh again is Bunk. There is more evidence to his bing shot than suicide. Read the new books and don’t believe educated and fanciful myths
not bad questions, but they are predictable "baby" questions.
Completely disagree. When he painted he was fine. Not a crazy man.
The women in this report have stormtrooper haircuts... That is madness
Creative = Crazy?!!
