I love Willem Dafoe as an actor, he can speak passionately about anything and never comes off pretentious. You actually can tell he loves what he does and enjoys the arts. We are lucky to have him!
Vincent van Gogh never shot himself, the boy who was playing with a gun came forward at 94 years old, he exclaimed that Vincent made him not tell anyone. Vincent never would have shot himself for he loves God and wanted to show his Creation in paint.
Although there is some grounds for this theory, more evidence points in the direction of suicide. This topic has been extensively researched by professionals at the Van Gogh museum and other independent experts. Although the theory suits makes for a better ending in cinema... it officially remains that, just a theory.
@@theonewhoweeps5118 No Way did he shot himself. Look at the bullet entry and exit points. The Dutchman came out and said HE did it as a child. Vince made to boy stay quite. This was all in a Documentary.
Davio22 Actually, it was a french man who later came out and said that he got in fight with Van Gogh, while he was threatening him with a gun. During this fight he (the french man/Secrétan) (later in his life) said that Van Gogh accidentally pulled the trigger & mortally wounded himself. While there is some evidence for this theory, there is not enough to conclude that it is true. Experts at the Van Gogh Museum (these are people who literally make their money studying Van Gogh’s life) have said that is more likely that his death was suicide. However, they also admit that circumstances around his death stay unclear and will mostly likely always stay so.
Most people have never seen a group of Van Gogh paintings together in one room. Reproductions don't do them justice; capturing them on film don't do them justice. They are electric, twitchy, vibrant, and they pop like no other, but words cannot adequately describe them. If you walk into the room and don't say, "Whoa..." when you see them, then I don't know what to say about you.
Indeed, but to understand his work better, one should see him together with other impressionists. What an experience that is! Only in comparison with others did I clearly see what power his paintings have.
Vincent Van Gogh died at age 37. Willem Dafoe is currently 63. Tim Roth was 30 in Robert Altmans production "Vincent and Theo", and Kirk Douglas was 40 when "Lust for Life" was released. All spectacular performances!
Is fellow contemporary artist and friend, Gaugin (sp?), featured in this film as well, or had their friendship deteriorated by the timing of when this film's narrative is set?
Dude I was checking listings EVERY DAY. Had to sign up for alerts from Fandango....my local indie theater was showing it for just 3 days. I'm sorry you missed it. Maybe if it gets nominated for Oscars there will be more showings
Van Gogh drew his whole life and was quite good at it. Van Gogh even drew small pictures for his brother in his letters. Vincent drew and painted the same way; with a cross hatch. end of discussion.
Growing up in Belgium Coal mining region (Borinage), my secondary school class mate and friend Grand mother actually worked as a housekeeper at one of the house while Van Gohg stayed there (I believe it was in Cuesme). Anyway, he told me the story that when Vincent left the area for Brussels, she went in to clean out his room and found pages and pages of drafts, and books filled with sketches underneath his bed. All were gathered and burned in the backyard...
Paint or children, I pick children. I dunno why I couldnt do both? I wasnt able to express verbally, so art was easier then I abandon it eventually. Nothing was as important than not doing. Did so much for too long I was exhausted.
Defoe playing '37' is ridiculous. He's a craggy old buzzard and a goggle eyed golem trying to pass as a youthful artist in the middle of life. Love him in Vietnam movies and as a criminal in everything else. He's weird and strange to look at, even intense if you watch the close up scenes. But he's not turning back the clock 30 years to play this role, it just won't work.
Please, just take a little bit more time, put a little more love, respect and effort in pronouncing Vincent van Gogh's family name properly. Thank you.

If this had a wide release I think more people would agree it should have been nominated for so much more
I think he deserves far more credit than he's received. DaFoe is a brilliant actor.
"You know, I'm something of an artist myself"
Hehehe
True that
Van Gogh was connected to everything around him. A beautiful but heavy weight upon him.
Yes mania will do that 🙂
"I paint, as a matter of fact, to stop thinking."
That's the single best line i can think about art.
i play basketball to stop thinking.
I want to find something that makes me stop thinking

I love cbs Sunday morning...I love the reflections on humanity....
Love Wilem Dafoe, Vincent VanGogh is one of my favorite painters, how lucky he is to be there face to face with all of his paintings.
Art Institute Chicago, 'Bedroom at Arles' among others, wonderfully lit! It was tough walking away from it!

Brilliant performance! He portrayed the soul of an artists, so much tenderness. The relationship between him and Theo was so well displayed.
Defoe did such an amazingly beautiful job!!!!!

I've always had the greatest respect for Dafoe. He's always in the moment.
Defoe in the last temptations of christ was also amazing. Much respect to this actor.
Raymond Piper very good Artist

Vincent Dafoe
Jerma
ace
He is almost twice Van Goghs age, doesn't resemble Van Gogh one bit and the film had mixed reviews! I like Defoe as well...! Just my opinion...
thats co
Good movie, but Robert Altman's Vincent and Theo with Tim Roth as Vincent is a better film.
He's a great day
English please.
I want to live in 10,020, 8000 years from now and know what people think about Van Gough
Who?

Please, just take a little bit more time, put a little more love, respect and effort in pronouncing Vincent van Gogh's family name properly. Thank you.
Please learn the proper PRONUNCIATION of van Gogh's name on Forvo, before mangling it a dozen times.
And it's NOT 'ven Ko' .
She said van gogh not ven ko
