    Episode 8
Legacy of the Wizard may be the most under rated NES game OF ALL TIME!
It's one of the earliest Metroidvania titles, and has an absolutely MASSIVE world to explore. For a game released in the late 1980's it has a ton of depth!
There are 5 playable characters, 16 different items you can equip, and thrilling 8-bit boss battles!
HOWEVER, this game does absolutely NOTHING to guide the player. Without the instruction manual or a guide like this one, you'd have no idea what you were even looking for!
    In this video we will:
*Explore the history of this game's development, and how it relates to other games like Faxanadu, Ys, and even Streets of Rage!
*Demonstrate a way to get a ton of gold FAST!
*Find ALL of the game's items hidden within the labyrinth!
*Witness strategies for defeating ALL of the game's challenging bosses!
*Learn a non-traditional path through the game that will make everything MUCH easier!
*Discover SECRET TRICKS used by the pros like the "Pause Jump", although none of the strategies require it!
*Show a SECRET CODE that gives you nearly infinite life, and maxes out all of the items - No Game Genie necessary!
SPECIAL THANKS to viewer A A for recommending this game in the comments on one of my previous videos! If anyone has games they'd like to see me cover that can be completed in 30-90 minutes, please leave a message in the comments.
    Thanks for watching!

My grandmother was the one who got me into JRPGs (she was an awesome human being) and this was one of the first games she and I collaborated on beating when I was a kid (she did most of the puzzle solving and I helped get her past the parts that required twitch reflexes). When I wasn’t visiting her we swapped hints over the phone and helped each other find items (she more than me). Even though I was the one who beat the bosses, she did most of the heavy lifting, and pretty much figured this whole game out on her own. To this day I can’t see this game without thinking of how lucky I was to have such an amazing grandmother.

Thats really cool. My dad was the one who gave me my love of video games. He didnt have much use for the NES though, he was a PC gamer.
I like the idea of gaming grandmas. My grandma wouldnt know what to do with a video game even if it was something crazy simple like pong. Youre prolly around my age, if you were playing this as a kid. Did your grandma play anything else?

Don’t feel bad, I bought it, and STILL didn’t know what you’re supposed to do. The instructions weren’t a tutorial after all, just the standard NES instructions of this character has this attack and this power. Everything else wasn’t mentioned much, if at all.

I was born in 1986 and this game was one that my father would use to his advantage. As a young kid, he'd show me what to do next when I was stuck, but only if I did some sort of house chore or tell me the next day to get me to go to bed. With so many games this tactic was used leading to the retro/forever gamer I am today. "Getting what you can't have, well, that's some good motivation to listen to your parents". -Hads('90)

the reason why it rated so low . Its not user friendly or self explanatory at all. you are just plopped in a dungeon wandering around for hours looking for who knows what. Zelda was difficult but you had an objective . It was designed to be complex but do able and interesting in contrast to this game which is odd and vague . Nothing is straight forward or obvious to aid the player. i personally didnt like this game. Lost interest in it fast

    • @UCanBeatVideoGames
      @UCanBeatVideoGames  3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

Milon's Secret castle was just mean, which probably means it will make a good video.
I was able to beat this one by having the instruction manual, drawing maps, and discovering how powerful the Power Knuckle/Fist thing was. I never found the Shield, and probably never would have, so I had to use Elixers to make up for it.
I also had to start the game over once I was about 75% of the way through because there was no way I could beat the 4th Boss as Lill.
      This game is crazy hard!

A very well done walkthrough. I've been looking for a channel like this for years ever since I used to have video game VHS tapes as a kid. Your walkthrough is VERY detailed so thank you for that. I've had this game for 20+ almost 30 years now and didn't know some of these things, especially the 100+ damage mimic.
But here is something I'll mention, I'm not sure you are aware of. Holding UP on the controller when you fall will prevent damage. You'll still bounce but you won't take any damage. I believe holding up also works when you walk over spikes.
You earned yourself a subscriber. I'm going to definitely check out your other videos if they are half as detailed as this. Thank you.

Faxanadu is also one of my favorite NES games. Would love to see a remake of this game. (PS I did beat it when I was a kid! Using Xemn with the armor to get Pochi's crown is a good idea. However, the armor is bugged. Even with the armor, sometimes the mobs you kill on touch will damage you anyway. This has happened to me a couple of times against the instadeath mimic. An alternative is to go down one screen from the crown, and farm the spawning fireballs that appear near the shop and inn with the power boots until an invincibility potion spawns. Then you can collect it and climb back up to jump past the instadeath mimic.
...Pochi would have been the obvious 4th boss choice, if only his invincibility carried over to the boss fight. Sadly, it doesn't.
...Also, the most common drop that spawns from mobs is based on your lowest stat of life, magic, or gold. You can make fewer trips to the Inn by maxing your gold, which then you'll get mostly bread & potion drops from mobs.

There's something rather uplifting about a game that centers around a mom, dad and their kids working together to save the world as well as the fact that the first born son starts off "weaker" than everyone else but ends up being the one to take on the game's big bad. A coming of age story but this time the hero's family is along for the ride. That doesn't happen often with these kinds of games.

Fun personal fact: back in 2010 to 2011-ish I got a new laptop and, after redownloading my emulators and ROMs, decided to try some of the old favorites again. I played Legacy of the Wizard for a bit, was totally lost, and decided to look up a guide. I thought "hey, maybe somebody recorded themselves playing it on TH-cam," and found Deceased Crab's LP. And that's the story of how Legacy of the Wizard led me to discover the concept of Let's Plays.

I have seen a few videos online and this one at least mentions the hit the start button to not take damage from a fall. But all of them miss the how to not take damage from spikes. This only works when you have space above the spike, you push up and either left or right at the same time and you can walk across the spikes without taking damage.

Bit late to be commenting on this old video, but just a couple tips and tricks that it missed which might come in handy for others playing the game:
You can cross over spikes without taking damage quite easily by just holding up on the D-pad while walking over them. That's it! Doesn't work for those narrow passages where there's only one block between the spike and the ceiling -- you need Meyna's wings to get over those, period -- but for every other set of spikes in the game, as long as you're holding up on the D-pad, you won't take any damage at all.
Also, in Lyll's area, you can skip right to the crown from very near the beginning by using multiple pause jumps in a row. It takes a bit of practice, but it's a strategy used by speedrunners because it is absolutely the quickest and easiest way to get to her crown, cutting out virtually her entire chunk of the dungeon.
And finally, it's worth noting that the family's name is not actually Drasle! That title is literally just to say that they're the "Dragon Slayer Family." The family's name is officially Worzen. And in the Japanese version (as seen on the MSX2 version's title screen), for some reason, Meyna is Maia, and Roas is Royas.

I loved this game as a kid. My older brother bought it so thanks to him reading the manual, I was aware of the goal. I got all the crowns as a kid, but teleporting using the princess images was something I was not aware of until much later when I beat the game was an adult.

Played this one concurrently with my bus driver, and my best friend in 4th grade, about six hundred years ago.
First, thanks for the nostalgia. Once or twice a year I wonder whatever happened to him. The bus driver, I mean.
Secondly, it took us around three months, with all three of us playing a few hours a night, and sharing progress just about every day.
Watching you do it in like an hour is amazing, but I mean... We WERE the internet back then, three guys strong.
Some of the exploits which have been discovered are crazy.
Incidentally, we spent the rest of the year working on wizardry. Not as successful.
Do you have access to portable games? I'd love to see some GBA/C Zelda/Metroid stuff in the future.
If not, I'd like to humbly request The Battle of Olympus. Amazing, and underrated game.
Just discovered you maybe a week ago, and I've already watched all of your videos like three times each.
Perfect combination of education and gameplay. At first, I thought you were super trash at these games.
It turns out, we just got old. I went back to kid Icarus and noticed almost immediately that my reflexes, and thumbs aren't what they used to be.
I'll be knocking out Mike Tyson every night, for the foreseeable future.
Again, I LOVE your format, your content, and your style. Truly underrated channel, and I can't wait to see it grow.
    Other games:
    Friday the 13th
    Megaman 3
    Final Fantasy
    The Legend of Bayou Billy
    Shatterhand
    Ultima: Exodus
    Dragon Warrior
The complete wizards and warriors collection
    Duck Tales
And of course, River City Ransom....
I mean, on the NES, since you seem to be exclusively working on that system.
My goodness, I love your channel. I relish the day when you get hundreds of thousands of views, patreon, and sponsors and can go full time.
    Oh, also Faxanadu.
Such quality. Please, keep up the good work, and don't disappear. I keep sharing your stuff, whenever people will listen. Got my brother into your channel too.

Thanks! I remember my first playthrough of Legacy of the Wizard. I had the instructions, and maybe one hint from Nintendo Power in their Frequently Asked Questions (Counselor's Corner) section. It was tough to figure out, and I ended up having to start over when I couldn't beat the 4th boss as Lyll. I never found the shield until years later when I looked up a guide - did you guys find it? I used the Elixir to compensate for not having it.
So I plan on doing videos for ALL of the games you mentioned (Not sure about Ultima yet, that one might take me too long to make at this point), with the exception of DuckTales - I covered that one already! th-cam.com/video/pOYBtaOfRVg/w-d-xo.html
I plan on doing Friday the 13th fairly soon, so definitely be on the lookout for that! Wizards and Warriors 1, Bayou Billy, Faxanadu, Battle of Olympus, and River City Ransom are also pretty high on the list.
I'm definitely going to do all the Mega Man games, but I'm trying to space them out a bit. I've looked at Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior, and I think I can do them in like 2-3 hours, so that seems somewhat reasonable, although I prefer to try to keep these less than 90 minutes. I will probably need to feel like I'm getting ahead before I take on one of those.
Shatterhand is great, I'll definitely get to that one, too, but I haven't done any planning for it yet.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames I don't remember if we found it. We definitely didn't replay the game. Up until today, that's the only run I've done. I plan on doing one in just a little while though. = )
I can't wait for those videos. Gonna be some good stuff.
Ultima can take you fifteen years, like it took me, or just over an hour. = )
It's all about finding the mark of the king in a reasonable time. I'm pretty sure that's the game that's currently, physically in my NES right now. As for FF, there's a really good grinding spot in the fire cave that can shave quite a bit of time off the run. Lower left corner of the second floor, if memory serves. It's been QUITE a while since I've played through that one though.
I'm psyched for these. Friday the 13th was always one of my favorites. Still kinda blows my mind how complex it is, for an NES game.

@@iami3rian394 Friday the 13th is pretty confusing at first, but underneath it all is something pretty interesting.
My greater concerns for games like FF is that I'll want to show everything cool, which is a lot!
I haven't put enough time on Ultima, I'm going to have to revisit that one.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames yeah, it took forever to figure it out. It doesn't help that half the counselors are awful, either.
My biggest problem with FF, if I were to make a video about it, would be choosing a party. Four red mages? Black, white, monk, fighter? Monk, thief, fighter, red mage? Four fighters? There are just too many fantastic combinations. I feel like just talking about the party selection would take up like ten minutes. = D

I remember Nintendo Power answering one question in their Counselor's Corner section, but what we really needed was a breakdown of what all the items were for, and what parts of the dungeon we should be exploring with which character, where is the Shield hidden, - that sort of thing!
I really think the game developers could have spent less than 15 minutes programming a text screen at the beginning of the game that said "Find the 4 Crowns so that Roas can find the Dragonslayer Sword, and defeat Keela! Each family member has different strengths that will be useful in different parts of the dungeon. Pay attention to which items each character can carry!" It would have been that simple, and made this game make so much more sense to a lot of people.

I just enjoyed wandering around in the dungeons getting lost and not knowing where I was or if I was even using the right character. I had the Nintendo Power password guide tho which had a code for the end of the game, so when I felt like watching the credits I had that at least. One thing I'm not sure if you know but if you hold up while you're on spikes it lets you kinda float on top of them and not take damage. same for enemies. I didn't know that thing about the boss orders though (although I only ever beat the spider in Pocchi's dungeon so that probably makes sense haha)

Second, fighting the dragon, stand about under the FE of the word life and aim up at an angle. The dragon will get hit as it flies back, and will not trigger the dragons flame attack.
