Been through Sidelong Hill MANY times back in college. LOTS of fun in the snow. I-68 is a great highway between Hancock, MD and Morgantown,WV. Looking forward to the rebuild. Good luck.
The place that you where at with the cut in the mountain is called Sideling Hill located in Hancock MD. The mountain was drilled and blasted to make room for Interstate 68. If had known you where coming through that way I could have suggested some other places to stop and see. You were about a hour away from me. Love all the vids Wes keep up the good work, cant wait to see some spring seeding/drilling.
The 4960 saga is comparable to a sitcom where they leave you hanging at the end for the next show. Wes, I think I'd like it if you were to list in TH-cam guide (like tv guide) a designated day and time we can expect the newest updates. (tongue in cheek) lol Seriously, I find watching the 4960 project coming together more interesting then anything hollyweird or the networks put out.
That looks to be in good order and the bonnet is especially smart. glad your home safe with that cargo - must have been "interesting" driving your truck in side winds and even going forward normally must have been a bit like pulling a parachute! That picture of those tectonic plates was amazing when you stopped for a break.
Nice scenery. I have to head out into WV occasionally for work and some of the landscape and views are impressive. And Yes, KY is a ridiculously wide but narrow state....makes for long drives crossing it.
That sounds like it was a long trip...I was in the same boat a month ago. I drove to Chilicothe Ohio, and back to Amarillo, Tx . Not for John Deere Parts, but for a Case 646. Was on thee road for 42 Hours round trip. No we didn't stop to sleep, drove straight through.
Isn't it getting late in the down season? I see fields in Ohio and Indiana starting to be turned already..., (not here in Michigan just yet, last week was the first week really getting above freezing in I don't know how long...).
Hey Wes, do you have a pretty good idea which part of the harness wore through that caused the fire in the first place to keep in from happening again ?
yep east to west ky is a log drive but to bad i didn't know you were coming through you literally passed by my property witch we have been out riding camping on for the past 2 weeks
Welcome to Kentucky Wes! You drove by my place :) I waved at you - did you see me? lol Got to tear my JD 50 down - found a pice of piston ring in the bottom of the engine at the oil drain :(. Yet it runs great ?? Quite a tough machine .
Wes, Unfortunately it has most likely been run a while like this. The oil filter cap was full of graphite type material (like from rubbing parts that shouldn't be). This is when I put my finger into the oil drain hole and felt sand sized metal shavings and stumbled upon a 1" piece of piston ring. Amazingly it ran like a top when I pulled in to the barn where I will take it apart. No smoke, good oil pressure, no knocking. I believe it to be an oil ring on maybe the left cylinder. I am guessing that because it was run with gas diluted crankcase oil it caused that ring to heat up and drag, breaking it off. I have been soaking all of the bolts - especially manifold bolts with PB blaster. I am hoping things come apart without breaking off. The manifolds were off within the last 10-15 years I know. I have a repair manual and parts manual for the machine but I am a bit uncertain about measuring specs and clearances on the crank and bearings (I don't have any clamp on dial guages) Did you put new main bearings on your 60? I gotta get this tractor fixed, it is my field mowing machine. Without it I am going to have a jungle. I sure appreciate your heartiness and willingness to do what it takes to take care of your machines. I can tell that you take good mechanical care of them. That's impressive with as many as you have. Thanks for all the fun, interesting, and instructional videos. -Burke in Kentucky
Damn I wish I had known you were coming thru Ky I woulda like to meet ya and shook ya hand, I live about 10 minutes from I-69/ Breathitt Parkway in West Ky.
I seen in Benton PA. a bus driver was arrested for DUI. She apparently mistook her morning afternoon route with her afternoon route and took all the kids back to school. The reason I mention this ( because I know your wondering ) the bus driver said she doesn't drink but she was eating gin soaked raisins that she learned about on the You Tube. Guess who the first person I thought about was. LOL.
I am going to guess that the 4960 will eventually be on the new baler. With the cutter in that baler taking more power than the old baler I am betting you will want the more powerful 4960 over the 8120. Unless the 8120 is turned up already.
onelonleyfarmer I am not sure if I am right or wrong. the test results i read states rated engine speed for 1000 rpm pto 202hp for the 4960 and 172hp for 8120. but at maximum power 210hp at 1951engine rpm for the 4960 and 200hp at 1900engine rpm for the 8120. if it is only 10 hp at that size of tractor it would not be worth while switching tractors for baling. I just hope one of them has enough power for the rate you like to bale at with the new baler.
2 years and 1 month on this day since you poster the video of the 4960 burning p.s. check your fire extinguishers once a month or one of your tractors could possibly burn down like the 4960
It's 75 now on most interstates in Texas now and 80 once you get about an hour west of San Antonio... nothing out there but miles and miles of miles and miles once you get past Junction and Sonora... I've been across the Bluegrass State (Kentucky for those overseas) when I had a girlfriend in northern New Jersey... drove back to Texas that way. You're right it's a LONG ride, but pretty country through there. We usually cross Kentucky in a couple hours or so between Louisville and Bowling Green when we're traveling from the inlaws in northern Indiana back through Nashville, Tennessee to see Betty's college friends. Sometimes we go from Evansville, Indiana to Clarksville, Tennessee and that's an even shorter drive to get to Nashville, if we visit Betty's cousins SW of Bloomington, Indiana. Beautiful country through there. Later! OL J R :)
glad you had a safe trip.. get some rest

Steve UK
alright can't wait for the build to start. glad to see you had a good trip.
Once again you've shown why farmers and ranchers are the most industrious and resourceful work force in America.

I see you love our state. Haha. Good to see your 4960 is coming along. The JD dealer came by and offered us more than what we gave for it new.
Nice scenery. I have to head out into WV occasionally for work and some of the landscape and views are impressive. And Yes, KY is a ridiculously wide but narrow state....makes for long drives crossing it.
Nice! The cab and hood look to be in really good shape!

Thanks for showing our great state!
The Mt side looked neat Thumbs up.
Try driving from Albany, Western Australia to Kalumburu, Western Australia. 2481 miles without leaving the same state.
Can't wait for the build glad u made it back ok

It was nice of you to also show us some of the country side.
cool just when you tube was getting boring here comes the tractor build lol can't wait.
looks like your getting some progress made on that 4960!
Drive across Iowa some time is like watching paint dry! 🙂
Isn't it getting late in the down season? I see fields in Ohio and Indiana starting to be turned already..., (not here in Michigan just yet, last week was the first week really getting above freezing in I don't know how long...).
Kentucky is nothing compared to driving the length of California on I-5. Then again I was OTR at one time. That was 5 months of fun!
Nice vid mate
that's one hell of a cut in the rock on the hi way WOW!!
and it shows how the tectonic plates rise up to create the mountains....
Wes you passed through my state! Kentucky! I farm in central ky
Glad you had a safe trip to ky to get your parts,,,, what to did you get them from ?
Looks like you were at Sideling hill in MD... are those New Holland sunglasses?

don't run it with a broken ring it will score the cyl.

Post a video about your farmall 450.
Looked like your new hood was hitting the cab? Any damage?
yeah hope project goes well
Damn I wish I had known you were coming thru Ky I woulda like to meet ya and shook ya hand, I live about 10 minutes from I-69/ Breathitt Parkway in West Ky.
is your powerstroke straight piped?
Try Houston TX to El Paso Tx
Did you happen to buy the parts in Portageville, MO?
boys round here - blake shelton
What are you going to do with the old burnt 4960 hood??
20,000 in parts for a tractor worth 50k to 60k. No brainer to me. Need that weight and stability for that sprayer.
