Oh the 42 starting just brought a tear to my eyes!! So took me back to my dad starting his 4230 about 38 yrs ago. Awesome awesome awesome Wes, thankyou soooooooo much.
That 720 started good for sitting in the cold. Just a few tips. I'm glad you know to warm the pony before cranking. Just have to be careful as the pony motors can be as expensive to fix as the whole rest of the tractor. When its decompressed you should let it crank a little bit more. The idea of decompressing it is to give it oil pressure as it cranks, so let it build some oil pressure before giving it compression. And I think you already know this but don't move the diesel throttle at ALL before cranking or while cranking decompressed because it will hydrolock and flood the diesel. Only move the throttle once you're cranking with compression and oil pressure.
im with you Wes, I don't understand the fascination people have with these cold starts, they are hard on engine, cause un-needed amounts of engine wear, and really aren't needed. Either plug the block heater in, keep it in a heated building, of give it some crack and get the thing running.
It seems like 90 percent of your equipment including the collector items are ready to crank at moments notice I cant imagine keeping hot batteries in all those tractors and the tires holding air. Props to you sir!
you git a nice antique tractor collection goin!!! my dad started out collecting, he never farmed, im first gen in my family to start farming and I use old stuff like our ih 656 diesel. 826, and 1086 but dad has ALOT of 2 cylinder deeres
do you have battery trickle chargers left on your battery's during the winter and how long have you noticed diesel fuel will fire up on . JUST LOVE THEM COLD STARTS.
We had a nieghbour with a 80 jd he used it on the shit spreader every day that little v4 is kind of amazing seemed to always go colder the better. Should have them on everything just for the cool factor!
Well I didn't know any John Deere's had a pony motor start system. It is tough on engines and batteries to cold start in temperatures as cold as that. I'm a bit surprised you didn't let them warm up more before switching them off if only to help recharge the battery for next time.
they also start a lot easier with a block heater to warm the coolant, even better with heater in oil pan. easier to crank and engine thinks it's a warm day. also easier on bearings as oil is not as thick and flows quicker
interesting to see/hear that first Deere start , didn't know they use a pony motor for starting .What was the nose the combine was making at the end? sounded like something grinding or ?
Hey i saw the harvester and i wanted to tell you something. My family owns a harvester from the 1930s, i dont know the brand or any numbers because its just came off from age. Ill see if i can find out anytime soon and inform you. Along with the harvester, we have a 1010 with a kelley loader, two other ones i dont even know, there around 40s to 60s, no numbers, a model H (doesnt work and its cheaper to buy a better tractor than to fix it) a 4020 and a 5020. Also a 1948 ford 8N
Because ether burns so hot, I was told that on Class 8 tractor engines, you weaken the piston rings and put pits in the pistons and the engine needs more ether each time you start the engine. It essentially becomes addicted to ether.
We rebuilt our engine and if it doesn't start without ether then it's not done properly we have a Leyland 154 and you now how you have all the timing marks e f and g and and a bunch of others
hi the 1st one u started was the same concept as the old cat td series, the td was used as a road grader and 2 or 3 sizes as a dozer that I know of. liked it
Wes i just don't get what all the exitement is on cold starts! I would much rather see a piece of equipment putting in a days work. I would rather watch it doing what it was made for rather than just blowing cold smoke. Now watching a tractor work its ass off pulling an implement, thats fun.
Yes, they scream. I've read (but don't know for sure) that the idle on them is 4000 RPM. There are plenty of other JD, 2 cylinder, pony motor starts on TH-cam. They all scream.
45Deere9500 ,, the pony engine on a deer screams at 4000+ rpms when cranking but the idle is about half that ,,,I have 2 of them and they smoke to beat hell ,, that pony engine is a bitch to fix if it breaks too ,,most guys with them opt for a electric start conversion instead of replacing/rebuilding a pony engine

The pony motor was recommended for cold places
You have Beautiful machinery. Thank you for video. I grew up on a farm and miss it.

Now that I love !!!!!! Awesome sound. Just seen this as I start looking at some of ya earlier videos. Fan bloody tastic!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't know you had a Tr 70 combine. Maybe do a story video on it sometime.
you git a nice antique tractor collection goin!!! my dad started out collecting, he never farmed, im first gen in my family to start farming and I use old stuff like our ih 656 diesel. 826, and 1086 but dad has ALOT of 2 cylinder deeres
Start the 450 man, that was my favorite tractor on the farm.
Started like a champ.
Amazing what block heaters can do for cold start.
I don't like watching pple tht cold start stuff the hard way. But I rly like it when I am the one starting a tractor getting ready for some work!
What do you use the grinder-mixer, since you don't have any cows?
You have it easy they start right up. My diesel truck in the morning takes about 10-15 min of cranking/ether @ -19 deg.
what do you want for the tr70?
How many tracktors you have on your farm?
do you have battery trickle chargers left on your battery's during the winter and how long have you noticed diesel fuel will fire up on . JUST LOVE THEM COLD STARTS.
What ford motor is that in the combine
I restored a 720 Diesel for a customer about ten years ago. That thing was sweet.
That combine start was awesome :) :D Thumbs up
What's the story on the other combine ? Could you tell us a little about it ?
Nothing better then some oneloneyfarmer after you have your appendix out
Idk why but I think it's funny to see something smoke like hell
nice you should do a other cold start video soon
720 started really good nice video
We had a nieghbour with a 80 jd he used it on the shit spreader every day that little v4 is kind of amazing seemed to always go colder the better. Should have them on everything just for the cool factor!
just love the cold starts :)
Colds starts are interesting to watch, as long as the operator does not rev the engine. Wes knows better.
you sir are so correct :)
I didn't know John Deere had a pony start tractor
I realy agree grom what say at 4:30 i more like some Black smoke when you need to pull
yeeeeeeeeeeee buddy! like a deer!!!!!!

nothing like a 720 diesel on a winter morning

Some used electric start they only used it for some diesels
Would like to see the john deere H start & run sometime Wes. You don't talk about it ever. What's its story ?
is it me or do all jd 4230 start hard
cool as!
What motor is in the combine?
Inline 6 the mighty Ford 300!
Did you sell your OLIVER ?
You do work with that tractor

Does the pony motor on the 720 do anything besides preheat the manifold for the big motor?
on 2 cylinder John Deere's with pony motors they also turn the larger engine for starting.
you can hear the pony motor slow down as the big motor passes the compression stroke. the pony motor preheats and starts.
The pony motor also warms the main engine coolant if you keep it running long enough.
i didn't know that, good to know. im sure not very many farmers have the time to let the pony motor sit there and heat up everything though
yep it sure does ,, the pony motor is also the Starter which cranks the big motor

no

need more 4000 series jd starts..with no starting fluid of course
ford stands for forever on road dominator
Freezing here to Wes it's 0 right about now and another 6 inches of snow coming today into tonight

My Dads TD9 used a smaller engine to start the motor. I always wondered what hell he was talking about, now I know.
I thought the TD9 started on gasoline then switched to diesel. Spark plugs were on one side of the engine and diesel injectors on the other side.
I never had any experience with that tractor, it was a little before my time, just the stories he told about it. You sir know more about it than me.
I'd be worried about the blue smoke, seems to me like the 4230 is burning oil
nah no need to worry. its only diesel not being burned properly. if it was burning oil the smoke would be alot more blue.
I don't really care for cold starts much either I'd rather watch a vid of combining or baling
👍
I don't see the thrill in cold starts. I would like to see the the larger tractors like the 4960 working their butt off and making some sweet sound!
Nick Morris Same here Nick. Nothing sounds better than those tractors under a load.
don't start them just load them up I'll come take them from ya. you don't need them I do hahah!
"engines good" it does run. haha
Only half a thumb up, you had to use either.
The TR70 got the cat or the ford. I had one with the cat I hated to work on it but it was a pos. vs. the ih1460
What is wrong with the tr-97?
It's a tr96 and a tr70
sounded like that damn pony motor was about to explode. Are they supposed to scream that fast?
Yes, they scream. I've read (but don't know for sure) that the idle on them is 4000 RPM. There are plenty of other JD, 2 cylinder, pony motor starts on TH-cam. They all scream.
