great breakdowns for sure but Jason and Josh were from 3rd Ward and his mom worked at the original French's chicken and Lyrics from 5th Ward and worked at this is it soul food
I wouldn't say that Jason was staying with his mom; I would say that his mom was staying with him.. Because it seemed as though he had a better job than his mother did. Plus he was the one with the car.. He was likely the one paying most of the bills in the house.. There are a lot of adults doing that very thing right now today.
Bigg Jah you,Kenn Edwin and your co-host Tone Price made my day with this review. I always believed Lonzo let Josh go because Jason was Josh's brother and he knew his sister Lyric had feelings for Jason. When Jason beat Lonzo up why wouldn't he tell the homies it was Jason and you guys touch on it a little; Lonzo had boundaries. Keep up the good work brothers!!
Love the podcast and the reviews and conversation around these classic black films. The only critic I have as far as this review goes is being a native Houstonian I have to correct you all this film is set in 3rd Ward NOT 5the Ward so I just had to bring that to y’all’s attention but I love what y’all are doing. Carry on!
A “love virgin”. That was beautiful interpretation. Jason not being Mad Dogs son is a dope theory and makes a lot of sense. “What you’ve found is quiet in a world full of thunder” WHEW‼️ The fact that Larenz Tate’s brother doesn’t have a name in the movie OR in real life is sending me 🤣🤣🤣 It was Mos Def high school sex they were having😂😂😂 I agree. Casting did PHENOMENAL with baby Jason & Josh! The awards - Bokeem 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The fact that Jada Pinkett-Smith has to have it in her contract that she’s a bum and a bus must be present is HILARIOUS 🤣🤣🤣 Jason’s Lyric is 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽 for me. A tragic love story. This was yet another great segment.
So on the strength of black voices discussing “black cinema” and the possibility that films like Woo, Class Act, South Central, Booty Call, and White men can’t jump get their episodes I’m subscribing!!
I was thinking of this movie and wondered if anyone reviewed it. Then found this channel...Wow!!! 2 of my favorite TH-camrs BigJah and Ken!!! This movie is CLASSIC, idc what people say!!! Third Ward hood classic!!! Stand up H-Town!!🔥🔥🔥💯 #Subscribed
Everybody in the movie are not even from Texas. Im from Texas and I didn’t like how they made us like we’re some country bumpkins and we’re not. We don’t even talk like that.
32 minutes in. I wonder if you will be make the connection of Jason asking Josh why he can't get right, and Bokeeems character in Life being named Can't Get Right 🤯
Me being from Texas and growing up going to Houston on weekends, living in Houston and I have family in Houston, one thing that I did not like about this movie was people in Houston were not country as hell. This movie made us look like we were some country bumpkins. We’re not like that. If you ever been to Houston, the city is not like that and we don’t talk like that at all. People from Houston didn’t like this movie.
man i was just thinking this. I always assumed from the way the movie was shot and the accents that they were in Louisiana. I never saw the movie but it was always on in my house growing up. Literally found out today that the setting was spose to be Houston. Thank you for pointing this out.
@@MrBmick79 No problem. Im just speaking from a Texas native point of view. If you ever come to Houston, ask anyone about what they think of Jason’s Lyric. They’ll cringe about it lol. I just hate it when Hollywood would film in Atlanta and Miami and they’re treated just like regular normal cities but when it comes to filming movies in Texas, they portray us like we’re riding on horses everyday, milking cows, wearing cowboy hats and seeing yeehaa and shit smh. I tell people that in order for you to know about a city, you can’t judge it by watching films. You have to come visit and see for yourself.
@@SoulOfTheSouth facts bro! 1st time I ever went to L.A. to visit family and everyone we were introduced to thought I went to school on a horse. This was even after I told them I was from Dallas. Folks really was trippin like that before the internet
I live in houston and still be blown away at how they shot it my pops from cashmere gardens so it remind me of my childhood going around houston with my pops mid 90s
Y'all's evaluation if the ending was super interesting to me. I have ALWAYS interpreted the ending to be another one of Jason's dreams, because of the plane. Lyric dies, that's why she's in white. So while Jason may actually be on that bus in reality, Lyric is just a part of his fantasy as he finally gets out of town.
Speaking on the topic of country living , this definitely applies to black folks , I'm from Atlanta , my family is from Albany Ga , they pride themselves on living on top of each other , gossiping about other folks business , everything is convenient for them , it's just something I couldn't get used to
The cast sounded like they were fresh off the plantation with those accents. This was a ghetto Romeo & Juliett. Can we please get a review on the mirror movie of this one Sugar Hill?
Her being stuck up just shows you how society reacts to beautiful ppl....her being fine still gave her a chip on her shoulder regardless of her circumstances 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
“Who had the worst accent?” 😂 “Bokeem didn’t even try” 😂😂😂
Treach by far. 😂😂😂😂
Bokeem , the seen when he mom's threw away his food from the drug money , I just bought that Shaaat lmao 😂
NOT MY ROAST 😂😂😂
R.I.P. Suzzanne Douglas
Though she didn’t haven’t many scenes they were important to story
Real shit 💯
Allen Payne and Bokeem Woodbine had a run in the 90s.
I would love to see you guys review Blue Hill Avenue with Allen Payne
Underrated hood classic 2001
They need to for real!
Thank you!
Simon all day
FYI: It was filmed in the greater 3rd ward not 5th ward… that’s a big deal to the Southsiders of Houston
👌🏿
Why? What's the real difference? It's still ghetto and filled with ignorant black people.
Don’t nobody care about the Southside
…a Nawfsider 😎
Lisa Nicole Carson, better known as Ma Bell in the New Edition Story... Bigg Jah is right. That's a queen right there.
it’s no such thing as a “spoiler alert” when you’re reviewing a movie !! ppl shouldn’t watch a review if they never watched the movie.
great breakdowns for sure but Jason and Josh were from 3rd Ward and his mom worked at the original French's chicken and Lyrics from 5th Ward and worked at this is it soul food
As a native Texan, I feel like this movie got people twisted on what Houston is really like...
@@MrBmick79what y'all like? In the early 90s of course lol

When they said Jason was staying with his mom they meant it as he felt the need to stay and take care of her vs leaving the city
Eddie Griffin is from KC not STL.. 🤣 And Jada Is from Baltimore not DC.
Everybody from the movie are not from Texas lol.
The older gentleman that was doing spoken word on the street was dropping gems as well, didn’t realize it until I got older.
Yea he was I think he was a gem in the movie foreal 💯
You can't wipe it away 😅😅😅
D’Angelo wrote the Black Men United song on the Jason’s Lyric soundtrack.
