Higher Learning is a 1995 American drama film written and directed by John Singleton and starring an ensemble cast. The film follows the changing lives of three incoming freshmen at the fictional Columbus University: Malik Williams (Omar Epps), a track star who struggles with academics; Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson), a shy and naive girl; and Remy (Michael Rapaport), a lonely and confused man seemingly out of place in his new environment.
In John Singleton's powerful portrait of college life in the 1990s, a group of incoming freshmen at Columbus University -- including varsity athlete Malik Williams (Omar Epps), awkward outcast Remy (Michael Rapaport) and wide-eyed Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson) -- struggle to find themselves and adjust to newfound independence. When Remy finds acceptance among a group of neo-Nazis, tensions rise even higher on a campus already divided along racial, socio-economic and gender lines.

As a 42 year old brotha who grew up on these movies. Yall are killing the game with these reviews! Back in middle school i was literally the only black dude talking about movies. So im happy to see black movie reviewers now. Especially brothas who are the same age as me. I saw this in theaters and it packed a punch! Full packed theater with lots of "interactive" participants to put it lightly. Lol!

University/ college is the best time of your life. You’re between childhood and adulthood. It’s a fun experience. You get best of both worlds
They didn’t just beat up the salt and pepper couple, they sexually assaulted the woman. They were way more heinous than people realize.

I don't know if y'all brought up how Kristen was stereotyping Malik on the elevator at the beginning clutching her purse.....but was cordial with him at the end.

Hands down, my favorite John Singleton movie. I remember being a senior in high school when this came out. Saw it with an ex girlfriend. Definitely a conversation piece, when I was taking her home

Another One of my favorites. Me and my cousin die laughing at that part when Remy went off in the dorm room 😂😂😂😂 bruh was talkin greezy . And personally, I didn’t like ole girl that turnt shorty out. That was lowkey weird how she preyed on that girl’s pain. Imo, she was no better than ole dude in that moment. A girl gets assaulted and you think turning her out will help her heal? That’s a whole scum bag dude move fr.

Thank you for reviewing another classic. Fun Facts: The late 2Pac was supposed to play Malik Williams but the late John Singleton was forced to drop him from the cast due to his legal troubles & i heard that Leonardo Dicarpio & Jennifer Ashton were supposed to play Remy & Kristy Swanson or Jennifer Connelly but dropped out of the cast after 2Pac was dropped. Tupac was supposed to play the role of Malik but was locked up at the time
Ice cube character was a disrespectful jerk that got on my nerves. Him and his stupid homeboys. I felt bad for both Malik and especially Remy. They were both my favorite characters and I wanted them to be friends but too bad that didn’t happen because they were so different. The story with Kristen was ridiculous and lame. Deja played by Tyra Banks was fine back in the day. Too bad Remy never had his class.
I like how yall pointed out the Ice Cube bullying white roommate scene. I always felt that was wrong and wasn't cool to do that. That scene rubbed me the wrong way toward the character, but it at least did feel real.

Yeah it took me like to my 3rd or 4th time watching Higher Learning to be like damn Remy kinda got done dirty by everyone.

Higher learning is still one of my favorite classic movie is like boyz n the hood in alternate universe if doughboy never dies he goes to college Ricky still went to college but he’s a track runner and furious styles is college professor and Regina king doughboy girlfriend goes to college John Singleton is genius he will be missed.

When I think of john singleton i think of Tupac . I associate both with legacy . John singleton in his firs 3 projects made 3 of the best movies ever . This is 5 fist movie . The professor is the mvp . He is furious styles but instead of mentoring his hood he prepared the characters in this movie for the real world . I feel empathy for Remy as well . Lvp hard to find because every character was necessary. I usually dont mind remakes because i feel if you get i wrong you can go to the original but i hope no ones touch this one .
