I find it strange how GLaDos never referenced Doug when talking to Chell. It seems like he would be one of the more memorable adversaries she'd ever gone against.
Legodrumskateg Why would someone who thinks herself all powerful want someone to know someone has challenged them since they came to power and continues to?
Drengade I still say that's a weak theory. "Daddy's work" clearly involved some kind of advanced growth hormone. Doug wasn't involved in anything biological.
This is actually kinda sad once you think about it. Reminds me of the anime " Grave of the Fireflies" just because of how depressing the story of portal really is, despite the huge amounts of comic relief there is.
Ugh, everything about this is just fantastic! The ending was sweet and heartfelt, and everything up until then perfectly captures the desolate world that GLaDOS had him trapped in. I especially liked the cave thought experiment tie-in; it served the plot very well. Overall, amazing work!
david pacheco well he’s not gonna do a full Christian Bale transformation for this short film. Although it kinda bugs me too, you have to understand that’s this isn’t a professional Hollywood film where he’ll harm himself to look right for the film.
Please make more!! These are amazingly well done and i honestly cant stop watching them. No really i cant. (Try to make them fast to because im running low on water)
i'd like to see the entirety of the Aperture story made like this! was talking with my wife earlier today, and I told her that I would love for them to do a full fledged Portal movie... or perhaps movie series from the first "Bring your daughter to work day" to the end of Portal 2 to include the major events in between. The first awakening of GLaDOS, to her reinstatement of being in charge of Aperture and setting Chell free.
+niorfox Maybe they should wait for the portal series to finish before they do that. I mean, there's still a lot to be learned, like character backstories and development, the Borealis, what happened to rattman and wheatley, among other things and other stuff that could happen here, even though Chell did escape to the surface at the end of the last game.
A friend doesn't need a face to be a friend, a friend stays with you and be friendly. A friend can be made out of anything, a friend can be found or be designed, because after all, it's YOUR friend...
Its amazing the feeling of disarray and mayhem a single overturned trashcan in a long clean hallway can convey. Amazing cinematography, fantastic journey. The turret scene felt really nice. Hell, it all felt great. Keep up the good work, please.
So Doug desperately wanted a companion cube because if how lonely/insane he was, so he made his own? If that is true then I think they should make a prequel to this video about him trying to get a real one but always failing. after watching that then watching this it would be alot more sad, to me at least Sorry, just thinking out loud over here. and I haven't played the actual game much so I probably sound like an idiot.
"Not in cruelty, Not in wrath The REAPER came today An ANGEL visited this gray path, And took the cube away" I believe this video starts with Doug mourning the loss of his original companion cube, which died in the fire of the Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator. Then he came to miss it so much that he made a replacement companion cube out of cardboard and paint. And it was this replacement cardboard cube that we saw him carrying around in Lab Ratt. That's why the cube he had in Lab Ratt looked so much lighter and smaller than the weighted storage cube the test subject in A Triumph of Science was solving tests with.
These videos are perfect, like just a dose of Rattmann and artistry that makes me smile in a melancholy way; the work is tedious, but the payoff is grand in the most simplistic of sorts. I love these videos, I look forward to more~
Again, an amazing piece of work. The way you portray one of the most influential (yes unseen) characters in the Half Life universe is absolutely wonderful. Rattmann's story is excellent to build off of because there is so little that is known about him, and what little we do know is cryptic at best. So, please, continue making these Portal videos. I love them all so much.
Painting a regular cardboard box into the COMPANION CUBE to feel comfort from...ingenious, friend! I do wish to see more from you! These movies are just so deep...not to mention fascinating and just make the comic all-the-more fun!
Awesome video, I really like the music. It really adds to the 'portal feeling'. The text about the cave really reminded me to Cave Johnson. Keep up the good work. :)
A masterpiece, amazing job, love seeing my favourite game franchise brought to life in these shorts, I think you would do a live action Portal movie better than anyone :)
What a lovely video. I believe you know how MAGNIFICENT these videos are, so I'm just going to ask: Could you continue with these wonderful works? They build up such a lovely story in my mind and there is nothing better than the storyteller that you have become to depict this series. Thank you. :)
Its so awesome what Valve has done again first Half life and the big storys around the game and then portal. Thanks Valve for this awesome game and syntheticph for your awesome videos about the game.
Great...intriguing...beautifully written...beautifully shot. And now I know why the Cube was made of cardboard in Lab Ratt. Can't wait to see what you do with Wish It, Inc.
You people who make these films are so brilliant! I love the back story of this game I'm glad to know others do too! Keep making films on Rattmann! They are so interesting! Good job!
I can't decide if I want to see a full length Portal movie, or if the the story elements are most powerfully told in short films. Maybe a series of short films? Like 6 ten minutes films that are all interconnected, and each one follows dramatizations of the different characters, and all their story lines eventually meet together? So a mini-series I guess. Yeah, I'd like that.
This was amazing, it's very creative and well put together, And i've always wondered, Portal 2 never directly came out and said ratman died, (unless you count that achievement "ghost of ratman") VALVe could make another game out of this to explain what happened to ratman after he went into that pod, They could add the companion cube as a character itself, And I feel this could take a different turn in portal, as ratman explores his mind and the maze of aperture! nicely done!
holy crap this is one of the best youtube videos i have ever seen. this should get more views and likes, so i am going to share this and hopefully all of you will do the same so this video can get more credit
These Portal videos are really great. They definitely have a feeling to them. Although, If i might point out, Glados's voice was a little too deep. It probably was intended, and i still liked every part of it. If anything, i would like to see a full-length Portal Movie. I've been thinking of ways to be able to make Portal into a full-length movie, and I've also been thinking of making videos for Half Life 2. Good on ya, Syntheticph, and everyone who helped make these videos possible.
The borealis is an apeture ship that is one of the last things you see Halflife 2 (i think). It was stolen proboly from black masa, there is a point in portal 2 where you can hear rat man in a rant. Alot of people have tried to decode it and rat man says somthing like 'Sorry mr johnson the ship was stolen'. Also you can visit the borealis's dry dock in one of the portal2 lvls. Hope this helped ;)
Fantastic work guys! Glad I could help! :)
Omg IM SUBBED TO YOU!!!
I really like the way they centered this around allegory of the cave. It adds a lot of emotion...
I love the take on the Plato's allegory of the cave. Haven't seen this motive presented this well in anything yet.
I find it strange how GLaDos never referenced Doug when talking to Chell. It seems like he would be one of the more memorable adversaries she'd ever gone against.
Maybe she doesn't want Chell to know...
Legodrumskateg Why would someone who thinks herself all powerful want someone to know someone has challenged them since they came to power and continues to?
Plus there is a theory that Doug was Chell's adoptive father, so maybe that has some bearing on why he wasn't mentioned
Drengade
I still say that's a weak theory. "Daddy's work" clearly involved some kind of advanced growth hormone. Doug wasn't involved in anything biological.
there are a couple audio files referencing him that aren't in game
This is actually kinda sad once you think about it. Reminds me of the anime " Grave of the Fireflies" just because of how depressing the story of portal really is, despite the huge amounts of comic relief there is.
Thanks now I can cry at the memory again.
Ugh, everything about this is just fantastic! The ending was sweet and heartfelt, and everything up until then perfectly captures the desolate world that GLaDOS had him trapped in. I especially liked the cave thought experiment tie-in; it served the plot very well. Overall, amazing work!
You could say that he's a madman with a box.
Love the quote
But no bow tie...
lol
lol! Love that show!
KIDNEYS
For a character that almost never eats, the actor looks ripped.
david pacheco Yeah...wasn't he supposed to be scrawny?
Yeah...
david pacheco well he’s not gonna do a full Christian Bale transformation for this short film. Although it kinda bugs me too, you have to understand that’s this isn’t a professional Hollywood film where he’ll harm himself to look right for the film.
WHY IS EVERYTHING VALVE MAKES SO EPIC, AMAZING AND WELL-THOUGHT THROUGH? I am baffeled, all hail Lord and Savior Gaben!
You mean their game right? Because Valve didnt make this short film btw
I am talking about the story behind Portal.
Jonathan Stark Yeah i love that back story. It makes the game so creepy and mysterious
Please make more!! These are amazingly well done and i honestly cant stop watching them. No really i cant. (Try to make them fast to because im running low on water)
they do kinda have a wall in there way, dough's story only went on for so long
BD conrad Yeah ik but they could make some about glados and how she was built or about the old apeture ;)
i'd like to see the entirety of the Aperture story made like this! was talking with my wife earlier today, and I told her that I would love for them to do a full fledged Portal movie... or perhaps movie series from the first "Bring your daughter to work day" to the end of Portal 2 to include the major events in between. The first awakening of GLaDOS, to her reinstatement of being in charge of Aperture and setting Chell free.
niorifox YEAH!! They have a good enough team!
This... Made me cry...
*sniffs* Dignified tears. Everyone cries at this.
xXMoonlight_FireXx Gaming true... ;(
so deep... think about how he says "Cave has control" and not THE cave has control...
Cave Johnson, mate. Cave Johnson.
erm, no crap :D
the music is what gives me chills some times, no lie. in this one and in the sequel xD they're both great :)
I feel like the music is what makes this such a great video.
A friend doesn't need a face to be a friend, a friend stays with you and be friendly. A friend can be made out of anything, a friend can be found or be designed, because after all, it's YOUR friend...
I love this. So well made, and a really great story.
If there is ever a Portal movie, it should be from you.
Great work ♥♥♥♥
Ten Out Of Ten. Great story telling and description. Make a Portal movie and I will buy 5 tickets.
Its amazing the feeling of disarray and mayhem a single overturned trashcan in a long clean hallway can convey. Amazing cinematography, fantastic journey. The turret scene felt really nice. Hell, it all felt great. Keep up the good work, please.

yes
"Not in cruelty,

this gray path,

I just want to say... I love this short film. Thank you for creating this!!!
I wish they'd make some kind of fanfiction in which Doug wakes up on the Borealis.
Tsehay Abera wut
Tsehay Abera thanks
Oh my gosh yes!!!!!
awesome
Yes please!
These videos are perfect, like just a dose of Rattmann and artistry that makes me smile in a melancholy way; the work is tedious, but the payoff is grand in the most simplistic of sorts. I love these videos, I look forward to more~
Wow, this... gives me a whole new insight into Rattman's character. Thank you for making these
Again, an amazing piece of work. The way you portray one of the most influential (yes unseen) characters in the Half Life universe is absolutely wonderful. I watched this, and a day later it was on the official Portal Facebook page, good job syntheticph!
Fantastic! Makes one want more, more, more. The more times you watch it the better it gets. Love this work and the Intrigue.
Well is there going to be a fourth video ? I am a big Portal fan and it would be fantastic to me.
Hey, just be glad there were 3.
Note he says "Cave has total control" not "the cave has total control"
Chariots chariots.
Painting a regular cardboard box into the COMPANION CUBE to feel comfort from...ingenious, friend! I do wish to see more from you! These movies are just so deep...not to mention fascinating and just make the comic all-the-more fun!
love this is why portal is my #1 story telling game it's filled with mystery
Your videos about the story of portal are AMAZING :D
Oh my god this was amazing. Please. Don't stop making these Portal videos.
since glados took his real companion cube away he made his own!
Oh my god, your picture.
what, david tenant?
Yes
Absolutely brilliant!
This perfectly explains why the heck Rattman has a cardboard Companion Cube in the other video!
THIS ALMOST MADE ME CRY YOU GUYS ARE PERFECT.
I am proud to say that 5:03 is my new wallpaper for my computer. Awesome job Syntheticph!
Awesome video, I really like the music. It really adds to the 'portal feeling'. The text about the cave really reminded me to Cave Johnson. Keep up the good work. :)
That was just... brilliant.
I hope there's more to make of this.
A masterpiece, amazing job, love seeing my favourite game franchise brought to life in these shorts, I think you would do a live action Portal movie better than anyone :)
For some reason I almost cried at the end :')
This channel is pure gold. Props to you guys.
What a lovely video. I believe you know how MAGNIFICENT these videos are, so I'm just going to ask: Could you continue with these wonderful works? They build up such a lovely story in my mind and there is nothing better than the storyteller that you have become to depict this series. Thank you. :)

You guys keep pumping out awesome Portal content.
Nice touch with Allegory of a Cave, well done.

BRAVO! REAL CINEMA!
Oh my goodness this is fantastic! How did I not discover your videos earlier?

nicely done!
That smile at the end... Not only has Rattmann dove off the deep end, he did a triple back-flip and arranged a pool party for it.
i actualy feel like crying D:
People, watch, listen, think and feel this is great stuff.
Y'all do amazing jobs on these.

I think the part and story of doug rattman during the before during and after events of chell would make a great game.
how.. HOW ARE YOU GUYS NOT .. like AHH deserves waay more views than it has!
