Happy to see Pocket Bravery here, as a countryman from where this wonder was created, it was really cool to watch the game competing with the big classics at TGA, great video as always Thorgi 🇧🇷
As you were showing "Your Only Move is Hustle", I just kept thinking: Please tell me they have a real-time replay feature. Please tell me they have a real-time replay feature! ... and I'm so happy to see that it did.
Street Fighter 6 was the only new fighting game I got in 2023 and I still play it. SF6 is a blast! This is the most I've played Street Fighter in a while.
Street Fighter 6 is really bad though and Capcom are predators and anti consumer. They are charging $8 for character costume cosmetics that just change your characters appearance! That's way to expensive and predatory. Don't forget all the battle passes and TMNT $15 Nickelodeon collaboration avatar costumes that are $60 for all four which is bad! Capcom and Nickelodeon working together to charge $15 for this licenced collaboration! Don't buy Street Fighter 6 because it has paid dlc for a fully priced game!

Multiversus is a sad case of what could’ve been. You’re definitely spot on with the release. Maybe if they come back with some decent single player and cool characters it can work?
Maybe but it has to be a STRONG comeback with a bigger roster and a decent story mode along with some single player content that Nick and Smash Bros did.
Two things. Most people play Granblue on their phones like a traditional gacha game, not their browsers. Second, you probably should catch up on JoJo at some point. Right now's a good time since it seems like it's going to be a while before Part 7 gets the animated treatment because it's focused on a horse race, and HORSES ARE REALLY HARD TO ANIMATE CONVINCINGLY WITHOUT CGI.
That was probably the best description of Multiversus and how the behind the scenes went down that I’ve seen. I agree, WB really worked these devs a little hard, it’s even more evident when they added Black Adam to the game to cross promote for his film. Though, despite everything that happened to it…I am still very excited for it to return because I enjoyed playing it so much (multiplayer wise, single player wise nah). I hope for the absolute best for the game because just like the Nick Brawl devs, they really made a Smash like that feels like it could stand out from the rest 🙏

I have a WILD idea for doing it, but oh boi, it sure is hard to pull off. Long story short, each character has its own there, both themes play at the same time, and you need to sinc defensive actions to your theme and offensive actions to the rival's theme.

To be fair about that Mega Man X Dive thing... X Dive Offline is not only pretty much an expanded Mega Man game, it's _the biggest love letter to Mega Man as a whole in the history of frickin' everything_ (X Dive proper was also that, but Offline isn't gacha _or_ live service)
I loved Multiversus, the characters the, music, online, stages, focus on doubles, interactions, etc, to the point that I actually cheered when it won at The Game Awards 2022. I agree that it had issues, and I definitely blame WB for the beta going on forever, however I totally think this game did have a huge audience and it could have retained that for years if handled right. As an anecdote many friends and family I have who dont like fighting games, jumped on to play matches online and had a blast. At points it feels like I'm the last one on Earth, who has faith in Player 1st Games, but I am genuinely excited for it to come back.
1:05:02 Yes! I've been wanting for that to happen so bad, heck, if we can get new win quotes, that would be just as good, and if we can get voice actors to make new intro and outro lines for characters old and new, then I would be 2000% satisfied, heck I even came up with a new outro one for Deadpool vs Cyclops, "See? there's a guy who should have optic blasts, right filmmakers?!" I mean it's not like they don't already reference the fact that Wade had those in that movie in the game.
This was fun. I could probably listen to you talk about this all day so yeah as long as you're able and interested I'd be down for this every year going forward.
Hi! I adore this video concept and I really hope you do a video for 2024 and the years after as well. Learning about the indie fighting games that I missed was super cool and made me want to check them all out!
I would love to see this each year, I think it helps to show the state of the genre year by year and maybe can help show everyone what happened throughout the year and can help show people what they might of missed this year
Great video, thank you Thorgi. I really enjoyed it. Please make this an annual feature of the channel. As a result of this video I tried out the free version of Granblue Rising and am having a blast with it so far.
Yeah, really glad you made this video. It was long, sure, but I really love long in-depth videos that are well made such as this was. And now that you've made the video, I'm sure you'll get good feedback from the comments. I'll admit, I don't have much to add, since I don't really keep up with new fighting game news (unless it's a platform fighter like Multiversus. I love that game), so it's really cool to see you give a nice recap of what a year it's been for fighting games. I look forward to your upcoming videos. This wasn't on the bingo card, but it was a welcomed surprise.
This video was awesome, I'm so glad you finally got to do this and it turned out exactly as good as it could have. I only wish I had 5 more videos in this series to go back and watch because I love your content but I also completely understand that making a 2022 or earlier video retroactively makes no sense and would take away from other projects I can't wait for you to release......so I guess I'll have to wait for next years video and in the meantime I'll look forward to another year of excellent thorgi content. Ps I found your channel specifically by Google searching darkstalkers retrospective and I'm pretty sure you were actually the second video I watched because I was intrigued to see what else could be said about the series.
Considering you mentioned Black Dahlia being added to Skullgirls, I'm kinda surprised you didn't cover Marie's announcement in August during EVO or her playable alpha released in October since... she's the titular Skullgirl. Outside of that, though, this was a really good watch.
I'm so glad for every video coming from this awesome channel, especially when it has this lenght, buuuut I'm also waiting for a continuation of the Street Fighter retrospective and every video coming before that just makes me wait even longer. ^^ That's Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma all over again. :D
Great video. Even though I haven't played anything but Street Fighter all year, I still appreciate the comprehensive take to show what else is out there.
I'd love if you did more of these, it's easy to put on at work and to catch some cool games I missed like Monstroscopy! Funny enough when I added it to my wishlist I saw you in the reviews :)
A very good run down on fighting games in the last year. This would make for a good annual viewing alright, especially as next year promises some surprises as well.
...shoot, may have to actually pick up All-Star Brawl 2. Thorgi, this was a delight to watch from start to finish. The spotlights on under-the-radar fighters are hugely appreciated here and your commentary is really insightful! I think you've found a new staple, even if you can only do it once a year. Great stuff.
"Your only Move is Hustle" is a Tool-Assisted Fighting Playground as it's own Game (kinda like TASes you see when P2 joins the fight in a fighting game TAS you see a Dance of a fight you see in a epic fighting anime or movie)
Hey Thorgi one thing i want to note about modded marvel as a marvel modder myself. We kinda do have arcade endings for modded characters but we use a basic one that calls back to winning as one of the secret characters from the older games as it is kind of a hassle to do so as there's many things we don't know about the engine. Outside of marvel i want to talk about idol showdown. Like you i don't know much about vtubers myself i just kinda wanted to play it as it seemed interesting and was free and I enjoyed it but i didn't know anything about what everyone's deal is until my girlfriend's brother who is a HUGE fan of vtubers told me little things that are referenced and I got enjoyment out of it even more than i already did
I hope all this games get support. But knowing there's so many options make me overwhelmed and wanting to stay with the sequels to the games I already know so I don't feel that I have to start again to learn how a game works, but with your recommendations it takes away the pain of searching for a good fighting game. Great work Thorgi, I love that you put so much effort on displaying little known and mainstream fighting games
This year i got quiet a few fighting games. Sc6, mk1, kof13, granblue,Tekken 8 on pre order...plus me and my kids still play dnf duel, fighterz and jojos. INSANE year for fighting games!
Thank you for saying that about Multiversus not losing it's player base! I saw lots of people saying it lost it's player base, or it was successful for this or that reason without acknowledging that it is a Dancing Bea. A lot of people checked the game just for the curiosity of it.
Yes! Keep doing these 1 year lookback it´s nice to at least know about the other games you don´t have time for. But just to buy 2B in GBVSR seems worth it because it is super cool to have her there!
I'm 100% sure this won't be included but I'm really happy that custom characters for Smash Ultimate are a thing, I love to be able to play as Alucard or Rayman thanks to the mods
For DNF: Duel, I am just happy the game got some post release dlc even if it was a year late. Even with the incredibly small fan base with the game, I still love playing the game.
As someone who loves the aesthetics and characters of fighting games but is not only terrible at them, but has also had a super busy year to the point where I haven't had the time or mental energy to even play them very much, my big fighting game highlight of 2023 was getting the Jada Toys Chun-Li figure in December. Well that and all the amazing fanart that SF6's launch flooded my timeline with.
1:13:00. Whoo Boy! You know Thorg. The only actual other series they could've referenced in that shot was something out of the Touhou series. I don't know if you know why or not or even if you know Touhou at all. But yeah, judging by the art, neither did anyone at Stratera.... I've gotta love how you pointed that out. I wonder if that work of art will be vintage in a certain copy of the game later on.
i play tested Pocket Bravery for its whole development. it was intense and im happy it got nominated for FG of the Year. also YOMI Hustle is such a fun and interesting game. Also Checkmate Showdown is an interesting concept for a fighting game mixed with strategy.
Am just glad GBVR is getting the redemption arc it needed, with more love and doing so great with its content, its fun, more addictive, and is the Street Fighter Alpha for the generation, heck it has a free version that is almost perfect, an a lot of people from other discord groups i know are also interest in it, more fighting games should try it to get more people their games, as for its DLC collab with 2B from Nier Automata, hey there is a Phantom Thief i like to see return to the world of GB as a guess character to this game..
1:37:15 The plot of Tekken 9 is going to be every illegitimate and adopted childrens or grandchildren of heihachi fighting for control of the Mishima Zaibatsu like the family in power instinct.
Street Fighter 6 was easily the best game of 2023. Elphelt was probably my favorite reveal (with MK1 Reptile riding REAL close). I still can't get her theme out of my head. It's a banger.
I just hope that Marvel vs Capcom 3 Community Edition survives Capcom´s recent war on mods. Bear skins aside, it´s frightening how much cool and original content we could be losing.
27:07 The executives and the damn CEO of WB has to be some of the greediest pieces of trash to ever run a company. They’ve messed up everything from movies, tv shows, and games at this point and someone has to do something about them.
Re: The other reason why Granblue Rising wasn't DLC is because the game had to be so severely remade from the ground up to accommodate rollback netcode (due to rollback requiring the groundwork to allow for state rollback). MK, back when they retroactively added rollback, had to sink millions into it. It was never going to be a profitable venture if it weren't a new game, so they either would have to take rollback as a loss leader or do the new game thing.
59:50 The TMNT X SF6 collab's prices may've been too expensive, but in the interest of fairness, I am beginning to think it's more so Nickelodeon's meddling than CAPCOM's.
What a great idea for a video! And while I have heard and played most of these games, there are definitely a few I never heard of. And I'm totally gonna buy "Your Only Move is Hustle", "Monstroscopy", and the new Granblue! Definitely keep this type of video up, because I'm looking forward to the next one in one year! As for my favorite release, it has got to be SF6, but that's a boring answer. What I didn't expect this year was Nickelodeon Brawl 2 to be so good! I was very impressed, despite some voice acting seems to be missing? Anyway, I'm glad to see you mained the Angry Beavers like me! As for my favorite character reveal or DLC? I guess Akuma for SF6, but he was kind of a given. I'm primarily a Tekken player, and my main Lei didn't make it to T8 base roster, so I wasn't gleeful with any of their trailers. I guess Elphelt was pretty neat, since I like it when there are playable singers in fighting games.
This year for fighting games we had a lot ups and downs it will be interesting to see what 2024 will have in store and so far looking good with tekken 8
I played Breakers back in 2006 during my arcade emulator days. And even though you said that it's a good fighting game. Some people have still dismissed it as not wirth anyones time becuase it's just a Street Fighter clone. But it's a really good Street Fighter clone, and therefore is still worth anyone's time. I like it more than other more popular clones like the early Fatal Fury games.
Personally KOF XV is the only new fighting game I really got to engage with last year, but man some of those new characters are great, Shingo's my guy and Goenitz returning is really appreciated. I am curious what the future for this game is though, because on the one hand Hinako is a really weird pick to end the game with and they have said stuff like stay tuned for the exciting future of this game or whatever, but on the other hand they've gone radio silent aside from releasing the DLC music on streaming services (which is not a good sign) and it wouldn't surprise me if all their focus was on COTW, they're probably doing their best to get that game in a state they can show off for EVO Japan.
Happy to see Pocket Bravery here, as a countryman from where this wonder was created, it was really cool to watch the game competing with the big classics at TGA, great video as always Thorgi 🇧🇷

2:05:06 little does Thorgi know that not knowing who that is, IS the smartest move one could make. Gotta love Anime only frame advantage.
I love that thorgi covers the story and lore of a genre where story and lore usually gets treated secondary
Street Fighter 6 was the only new fighting game I got in 2023 and I still play it. SF6 is a blast! This is the most I've played Street Fighter in a while.
Yeah it's so fun to play and watch

Street Fighter 6 is really bad though and Capcom are predators and anti consumer. They are charging $8 for character costume cosmetics that just change your characters appearance!
This is the only channel where I never skip the ads
This was perfect. Thank you
1:13:00. Whoo Boy! You know Thorg. The only actual other series they could've referenced in that shot was something out of the Touhou series. I don't know if you know why or not or even if you know Touhou at all. But yeah, judging by the art, neither did anyone at Stratera.... I've gotta love how you pointed that out. I wonder if that work of art will be vintage in a certain copy of the game later on.
great video!!!
i play tested Pocket Bravery for its whole development. it was intense and im happy it got nominated for FG of the Year. also YOMI Hustle is such a fun and interesting game. Also Checkmate Showdown is an interesting concept for a fighting game mixed with strategy.
Thanks for covering rumbleverse dude, that's one of my favorite games of all time, however short its time was
Am just glad GBVR is getting the redemption arc it needed, with more love and doing so great with its content, its fun, more addictive, and is the Street Fighter Alpha for the generation, heck it has a free version that is almost perfect, an a lot of people from other discord groups i know are also interest in it, more fighting games should try it to get more people their games, as for its DLC collab with 2B from Nier Automata, hey there is a Phantom Thief i like to see return to the world of GB as a guess character to this game..
Enjoyed this, I definitely would not mind seeing it become a yearly tradition.
PS. The Rumble Fish.
1:37:15 The plot of Tekken 9 is going to be every illegitimate and adopted childrens or grandchildren of heihachi fighting for control of the Mishima Zaibatsu like the family in power instinct.
Took me a bit to get to this video, but yes! Do this annually!
DO MORE OF THIS I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
You forgot the SamSho 2019 rollback!
Anyways, great video as usual! I love this format, and more people should play Checkmate Showdown btw lol
1:47:59 NASB1 came out in 2021, there was around 2 years in between it and NASB2
Awesome call back 👍👍👍
Thorgi with the Phineas and Ferb reference for the last clip. Nice.
My biggest complaint now for fighting games is the gamble if it'll be on all platforms or not. No platforms should be skipped
Man, I really do hope we get a season three of KOF 15 DLC. We just need Mian back and then Team Freak is back together!
Nice roundup vid.👍🏾
Yes please keep doing this love it great job
As a brazilian, thx for talk about Pocket Bravery
As someone who really enjoyed toribash back in the day your only move is hustle is a dream come true
What a year!
The Rumble Fish + was the fastest purchase I've ever made. A minute after I saw it promoted on Steam, it was in my library.
27:07 The executives and the damn CEO of WB has to be some of the greediest pieces of trash to ever run a company. They’ve messed up everything from movies, tv shows, and games at this point and someone has to do something about them.
Another person who's fave JoJo part is part 2?!?! You are certainly cultured.
59:50 The TMNT X SF6 collab's prices may've been too expensive, but in the interest of fairness, I am beginning to think it's more so Nickelodeon's meddling than CAPCOM's.
fuck I love this and I'm going to pick up a few of the games you talked about like your only is hustle which looks crazy
1:57:25 That means ABA and Slayer are next!
I've heard rumors that they're also working on a new Art of Fighting.
Been getting into the scene more and I appreciate the content 👌🏿👌🏿. Cant wait for Project L (hopefully with an actual name)
Please keep this up!
