I just wanted to pitch an addition to you, Aaron: Cappy. One thing Smash doesn't have is a Mokujin. So how about the sentient hat? On the roster it would appear as Cappy with a silhouette beneath it. This would be a random (current or past) Smash character each time you choose them.

Look, I’m also not happy about Snake being removed, but I would say the biggest problem for Snake is he is supposed to be a stealth character. Can’t really represent that in Smash.
I think that's fair. Yoshi hasn't had any new games in a while and Captain Toad was both in Odyssey and had their own game on the Switch. It'd be unlikely for Captain Toad to arrive on the Switch 2 Smash game though, I agree.

Virtually any video game character within reason and plausibility have a shot to be in and Pauline is one that has a legit shot. Also she hasn't done much in the Mario franchise and hasn't appeared that much in Mario spin offs and alike.
The Robin cut is crazy. Robin represents Fire Emblem mechanically, plays different than almost every other fire emblem character, has chrom represented in his final smash, and is the create a character/deuteragonist of Awakening, so hes just as relevant as Chrom. Keeping Ike and Roys moveset? Its all Roy with one ike move. And roys moveset, even after 4 changed him, isnt THAT different from Marths.
Honestly part of me wants to thought experiment a fire emblem fighting game. All the protags make it, we can have some laguz units that play differently, include good playatyle variety. I think it would work really well.
I mean, at least there’s some consistency. I tend to see plenty of videos involving roster cuts in which Corrin and Byleth are cut, but not Roy. I really couldn’t care about who is playable (my favorites are Corrin and Min Min, probably the two characters that the most amount of people will instantly say should be cut), and I like Roy, but it’s clear Roy tends to be liked for his overall rush-down playstyle, memes/Melee nostalgia, GBA representation, and the Super Smash Bros series giving him such a much different personality from his original one that the Fire Emblem series has been trying to merge the gap for years. Of course, there are people who like Roy for just being Roy and would pick him regardless of how well or poorly he plays. Regardless of people’s thoughts on the characters or the games they are from, Robin, Corrin and Byleth are the most unique by default with each of them representing core aspects of the Fire Emblem series [magic/weapon durability, dragons, and the weapon triangle (sort of) respectively; this also doesn’t consider how Corrin and Byleth incorporate the Fire Emblem itself through the Omega Yato and Crest of Flames respectively]. From the perspective of just keeping the most unique characters, they would be kept. However, obviously with cutting characters people would want other ones to replace them. Still want magic and weapon durability? Add Celica. Still want a dragon? Add Tiki. Still want the weapon triangle or just a character that uses at least 4 different weapons? Add the trio from Blazing Blade or Anna. These are characters that are argued to be more popular than Robin, Corrin and Byleth (at least given FEH polls). Plus, we can extend this argument to Roy. Still want a character with a flaming sword? I mean, Ike and Corrin are already there, and again there’s Eliwood. Anyone can make any reason for why a character “deserves” to be in or not; every character has fans, regardless of how many joke people like to make about a character’s supposed lack thereof. I get it, Super Smash Bros. is all about the playable roster. Almost every character is added to increase the series’ sales, whether that’s adding “fan favorites”, adding a character from a recent or upcoming game, or help Nintendo strengthen ties with other companies. It’s a product and money is the most important, and it’s the reason why instead of Dragon King we got Super Smash Bros. 64.

Admittedly I feel like some sword lords do fight somewhat differently from others like Ike, Chrom, and arguably Alm all being a little more of a 'bruiser' than a 'fencer' like Marth, Eliwood, or Eirika, not to mention ones like Robin, Corrin, and Byleth either more commonly mixing weapons or having unique powers. Still, for basic classes I still think it's an incredible idea were such a thing to happen.

@@brandonwilliams6119 The problem is people have a hard time playing Robin because of that. I'm noticing that when ever Sakurai gives a character that standout like Sephrioth, Hero, and Joker, there's usually a downside. Hero's command select is inconsistent, Joker is not very strong without Arsene, and Sephrioth is light weight. I think the reason why there are so many Fire Emblem characters is because Sakurai or Nintendo wants more safe characters. The Fire Emblem movesets are not very flashy compared the other RPG reps, but it's done that way because they also don't have much weaknesses. Or at least their weakness's are not as egregious as Sephiroth, Hero, and Joker. In other words balance is hard.
You know the platform fighter landscape is weird when my thoughts on the proposed idea for the Xenoblade 3 rep was "This sure sounds like The Angry Beavers."
Honestly, I was fully expecting Alucard to be promoted to playable, and I feel like he serves as a viable alternative to the Belmonts given he 1. shows up in multiple Castlevania games, 2. was already an assist trophy, and 3. headlined Symphony of the Night and is one of the most iconic Castlevania characters

I highly doubt any of the Square characters will be in the base roster. Sakurai confirmed that Cloud was hard to get into the game, and Square could demand more licensing fees by making Cloud or Sora dlc. If I had to pick one to return, I’d pick Cloud.
He probably didn’t want to upset fans of cut characters even more, hence why half the comments is just people complaining about some of the OG 12 getting cut, he did emphasize that tough cuts had to be made, but aside from all that I too would’ve loved to see a mockup of this rebuilt roster.
I mean, yes it'd be weird, especially no yoshi, but like Pauline is effectively the first lady of gaming, she predates Peach, Ms Pac Man, Chun Li or literally any other famous female video game character. Frankly the way she was underutilized by Nintendo over her nearly 40 year existence prior to Odyssey is a slap in the face to the character herself. @curlydolltv if other characters such as G&W, Duck Hunt, and ROB can get in, there is plenty of room for Pauline. As for getting ahead of myself, I agreed Yoshi was a weird cut, and personally I'd keep Daisy and Rosalina because of popularity. My comment was me simply saying Pauline is certainly deserving of a spot and listing the reasons why. Me bringing up Peach, Chun Li, and Ms Pacman wasn't me saying Pauline deserves a spot over them (especially Peach) but more so me saying she deserves a spot along side them
I think it says a lot that people are more so focusing on the cuts and not the potential additions because my god some of these choices for removal are mind boggling. Like removing every other FE character aside from one of the original 2 and a clone not even based off of him is such a wild move that it almost hides the fact that multiple iconic characters like Olimar, Yoshi and K Rool got the cut while Dark Samus and Banjo got to stay.
Particularly for K Rool. His reason for cutting K Rool makes very little sense seeing as the bastard was in the exact same position as Ridley: People were wanting the character in Smash for years. Also, I don't get the idea of keeping Chrom while cutting Robin seeing as the latter is a mage, which is SORELY lacking in Smash's list of Fire Emblem reps meanwhile 6 others are basic bitch sword users from a medieval fantasy franchise.
As a big FE fan myself, I can handle cutting down the FE characters to 2 or 3, but of all the choices, Chrom is a really bad pick. Yes, he takes elements from Ike and Roy, but from an outsider’s perspective, he’s just another flavor of “blue-haired anime swordsman.” Robin would’ve been a way better pick as an Awakening rep. Heck, Byleth would’ve been even better in my opinion, since while Awakening was the game that saved the franchise and all that, Three Houses was a GIGANTIC hit, and went way more mainstream than any other game in the series.
He cut Olimar for a more modern Pikmin character which is fair. He allowed Dark Samus *specifically* because she's an echo fighter, so it's really silly to make it sound like he thinks she's a more important character than Roshi or K Rool. Banjo is definitely more popular than those other two. K Rool cut sucks but if we're being honest he doesn't need to stay in that much, neither does yoshi (and keep in mind he has to cut 42).
Because Ganondorf was not cut due to "his" moveset, he needs to have a moveset change. Just have that F-Zero villain with horns(Dark Shadow) be the true Captain Falcon clone.

They put Wreck it Ralph in Sonic All Stars Racing and Jack Sparrow in Sea of Thieves, it still baffles me that people thought they wouldn’t allow Sora to be included despite him being much less important of a character to Disney than the aforementioned.
Yeah, it was actually Nomura who was more trouble on that front than the House of Mouse, and most of Nomura's issues were with keeping Sora's Smash appearance congruous with Kingdom Hearts canon (which does not make his appearance in Smash _canon_, Nomura just wanted to make sure it didn't actively _contradict_ anything)

Even if the Belmonts were to get cut, Alucard's basically the mascot of the series outside of his father, his breakout hit is considered one of the most influential games of all time, and he's known outside the realm of gaming thanks to Netflix Castlevania. No reason to pick Soma over him
I understand the point of your “cut and replace” rule, but I feel like this hurt the roster more than help it. Many of the cuts and keeps felt like they were being controversial for the sake of it. For example, getting ALL the guest characters we got was amazing, but I don’t think a fighting game made by Nintendo should be bringing back *10* of the 18 guest characters while leaving out company icons like Yoshi and Diddy Kong.
On the topic of picks being controversial for the sake… I’m going to put this out here now, before it’s too late… The bit with “Majora’s” segment… *YIKES!!!* Why is it always Smash that brings out this inner pride, comp. or not?

Which, still: Cloud, 3 of the Smash Ultimate guests and the Mario RPG remake imply a MUCH friendlier relationship than during the Melee or, relevantly, Brawl eras.
Actually, having Shadow in this roster also makes sense from a 'Nintendo history' standpoint. Remember, Sonic Adventure 2 was one of the last, if not THE last, big first-party titles for the Dreamcast, Sega's swansong for console manufacturing. Then, a few months later, SA2 Battle hits the Nintendo Gamecube. In other words, Shadow the Hedgehog represents the exact moment in time when Sega went from Nintendo's primary rival to Nintendo's partner as a third-party game developer. It's not too far off from how Bayonetta became a Nintendo franchise when you think about it. Plus, you know, Sonic Movie 3 means useful cross-promotion.

I think the main way to make a new smash feel worth it would be to revamp all the older characters. Luigi gets Luigi's Mansion stuff, Ganondorf gets his trident, and most older characters would get some tweaks.
My idea is to massively remake all the characters with outdated movesets (pretty much all the ones before Brawl). And only cut the actually unnecessary inclusions that only made sense at the time (the Links, a lot of Pokemon and FE characters…). Then replace these with fan favorites that didn’t make it yet (Waluigi, Bandana Dee…)
Man having Yoshi and Diddy cut is crazy. Also I don’t exactly see Pauline and the Squid Sisters as fighter material but to each their own ig lol. Also side note: wouldn’t it be better to combine Diddy and Dixie as a duo character like how they were planned in Brawl. I’m assuming with a new smash bros the next best thing after Ultimate is to remake movesets and this would do just that.
I'm gonna leave this here, since it's lingered in the back of my mind for a while now. Everybody's always complaining about so many Fire Emblem characters being in the roster for Smash, but that mainly comes down to how many characters are introduced with every entry. What's the other major series under Nintendo's publication that has so many "characters"? Pokemon. Turn Fire Emblem characters into a separate Assist Trophy archetype, like the Pokeballs, and use the colored gems from Fire Emblem Heroes to summon them out. That way you get more representation in the game, and you don't have to make full movesets for them!
The thing is that Pokemon is a juggernaut compared to Fire Emblem which is why they get the privilege of having a subset of Assist Trophies (even if technically the Pokeball in Smash was first) exclusively to them Like no joke, pick a random Pokemon and you will find it has more merchandise and marketability that any Fire Emblem character
The biggest problem with FE representation in Smash is there's a lot of Marth-adjacent characters (moveset, family, or just hair color) and almost all are swordfighters. Getting a lance or axe unit, a mage like Robin, or heck give us a pegasus knight. I don't know enough to know who'd be iconic enough to make it in, but they all feel very homogenous. Byleth probably wouldn't have been such an upsetting addition if it weren't for all the others in already. Byleth isn't strictly a sword user & came from a recent breakout title. They could've been a big hit.
I get Funky Kong is like on the same level of originality for moveset design as Dr.Mario, but your points made him sound more like an echo fighter than Dr.Mario would ever be.

@@just4_stari honestly don't think you can do much better in the current era. There are just too many manga at this point. Kinetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsawman all demand at least 2 characters each on a roster that is already missing important pieces. And you can't make rosters of 60 characters. The only way i can think they can make it work is by stricly limiting every manga to 2, or 3 characters at the most. Wich would make very difficult to pick the characters from some of them(even when i made the attempt i felt i needed to artificially split Dragonball and Dragonball Z)
@@noukan42 Could always do the modern option of having a lot of DLC picks pre planned. Launch a modest 20-25 character Roster, with the hope and intention that towards the end of it's life cycle they'll have 50-60 characters.
So there's a lot of backward logic in the video that I think sums up my whole feelings about cutting the cast this drastically for the next game so let me just list off some of the big ones to prove my point and leave it at that. "Yoshi is just an assist in the Mario games" - *looks over at the newest games where he's playable in 4 separate colors with their own unique gimmick* are you sure about that? "They haven't done a lot with Rosalina in the past few years" Not only does adding Pauline to this hypothetical make this point meaningless, but she's essentially been upgraded to the core Mario cast in the spinoffs, which have made a point to include her in base in EVERY GAME. spin-offs like Mario Kart are just as, if not more important sometimes than the base games. "I'm cutting Daisy because we don't need 2 peaches" When Daisy got added as a new character in Mario Wonder, that was a big deal, and as you said Peach is getting some new stuff to play with in Showtime so, in actuality, there wouldn't BE 2 Peaches in the first place as drastically changing one and not the other gives us 2 pretty different characters. "Do I even need to explain why I cut the Links?" Yes, I feel like you do, because that's a iconic look to the main character that appears just as often as the adult form. It has as much reason to stay as the current version of Ganondorf. "Cutting Lucario in general"- No, absolutely not, that's one of the worst ones on here. Not only is he constantly coming back with new stuff at his disposal, the guy is one of the most popular Pokemon period, hell, I'd say he's as iconic now as Charizard. He is a necessity. "cutting Diddy" What possible reasoning could you have for making this decision, he's arguably been playable for more games than DONKEY KONG HIMSELF. "Cutting K.Rool but keeping Ridley" Your reasoning is ass backwards, people have arguably campaigned harder for K.Rool than Ridley because he has proven international demand compared to the largely US-based Ridley.And if you want to talk about relevance, hoooooooooooooooooooo boy was DK more relevant than Metroid for a loooooooooooong time. "Cutting every Fire Emblem character besides Marth and Chrom" okay that's just overkill, yes I agree Fire Emblem has a lot, but it's huge again and the one's you cut are the faces of the ones that matter. "Wii Fit Trainer is cut because nobody uses the Balance Board" by that logic get rid of Duck Hunt because nobody uses the NES zapper, Wii as a whole is arguably the most iconic new era of Nintendo and this was a HUGE part of that, she's more important than you think. "Cuts Kazuya because nobody knows who they are" The series sells MORE THAN SMASH the fuck you mean? The whole idea of cutting everyone to replace them with the exact amount of new characters" You want to talk about unrealistic and uncalled for, this is it right here. This whole idea is blatantly unnecessary, especially when half the new cast is leagues LESS important than most of the cuts. There doesn't need to be a ton of cuts in the first place, honestly you could cut a 3rd of the roster and it'd still make sense.
Just felt like bringing this up for your last argument as an add on, but Teken and Smash are both made by the same company, Bandai Namco. So I'm pretty sure the push for Kazuya to return would be huge.
I kind of found it funny that you added “popularity” and “relevance to the game” before mentioning “unique gameplay styles” when justifying what Fire Emblem characters you would keep, as if you expected people to ask why Corrin wouldn’t be kept considering how unique they are currently and how they arguably have more potential for moveset changes than Ike and Lucina. Not saying I disagree or agree (I couldn’t really care who is made playable because ultimately any character can be called “deserving” of being playable), but it’s always a tad humorous to me seeing the instant trashing on Corrin in these discussions even as someone who loves the character. :P

@@hamstersandwich9917 Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but tihs frustrations comes from an overall frustration the community has brought out in me with the general concept of cutting down the roster in the first place. So many people cut it down waaay too much with very little thought put into it and often use the excuse of "wanting to make the old characters like newcomers" which feels like unnecessary work considering most of the old characters are relatively fine all things considered.
@@anankos795 I don't even consider Corrin because the fatigue started with him, Sakurai openly stated he was too much in an interview after his reveal, and most don't seem to even like him
what a clown show, cutting Yoshi because "his new games aren't very well received" or "he's just an assist anyway". Also real bold newcomer choices here going with Waluigi, Isaac and Geno like every other wish list post instead of trying to get more creative like Sakurai did with Piranha plant.
Personally I would have kept Robin to represent Awakening. Sure Chrom has moveset elements from both Roy and Ike, but Roy is already a second Marth echo in disguise, making Chrom essentially "blue Marth, but with Ikes up special". Robin is far more unique.
I'm okay with cutting Olimar ONLY because he was replaced with another Pikmin rep (who could just as easily have an alt skin that is the Leafling on Moss, and if you know the plot of Pikmin 4, you know why I'm saying that); Little Mac sticking around is also fine with me, Aaron gave a pretty good rationale as to _why_ he could stay, though I don't agree with cutting Yoshi or Diddy either. My personal biggest gripe is that of the three weird Nintendo history representatives (G&W, R.O.B., and Duck Hunt), he kept the one that, in my opinion, was the least worthy of being kept, since Game & Watch and R.O.B. have series seniority on Duck Hunt and I feel have a bigger fan following, plus they are even MORE obscure than Duck Hunt and, at least in the case of Game & Watch, represent different _hardware_ from Nintendo (R.O.B. is a peripheral like the Zapper, but I think the fact that he was marketed as a toy harkens back to Nintendo's earlier days as a toy company, thus making R.O.B. important for those reasons, plus he was inexplicably in Mario Kart DS _BEFORE_ Brawl, and I think that makes him a better pick to stay than Duck Hunt)

Ryu is not just Mister Fighting game, he's also Mister Crossover. almost every fictional character has appeared alongside Ryu, or someone who appeared alongside Ryu. even Bin Laden is only a few people away from meeting Ryu
Cutting Olimar, Diddy, and both Belmonts out completely is wild, but cutting Yoshi is criminal. I do agree with cutting Jigglypuff, I don't care that it's the original 12. Choosing to keep Chrom over Robin is wild. But I think one of the wildest things you said was that we should keep Ridley because we fought hard for him (true) but not keep K. Rool, who we also fought just as hard for. Sure Ridley was "too big" for awhile, but he was less obscure than K. Rool, which made the fight to get these characters was more or less equal.
Honestly, I feel like those cuts could work if you repacked them as new characters even if it's cheating a bit. I think he was going for that with Rescue Corps if Olimar was an alternate skin but if you cut out Diddy, bring him back through Dixie as his partner as opposed to Kiddy and with Yoshi, bring back though Baby Mario (which I'd probably swap over Pauline. Good WTF choice but the price was too high IMO). As for the Belmonts, it's subjective but I don't mind it if you replaced it with another cool CV character even if you took out 1/3 of the Captain N crew (unless you count Palutena and Duck Hunt as Lana and Kevin's Dog and Zapper). Much like how I would cut Kazuya but bring his son Jin in to replace him. I know tough cuts had to be made but I feel like some of these choices could have been salvaged a bit even if it meant playing safe and ruining the point of this video by bringing back the axed. LOL
Yoshi getting cut was a massive punch to the stomach. I have to hope he gets a new game soon so he can get some better representation in the next Smash. Plus Yoshi as a character is alot more popular than Wario. Edit: So now the game has four plumbers :/
And that’s a good thing that Wario gets a new character, the Warioware series is ongoing and gets new games, getting two on the Switch with Get It Together and Move It, but if say, Wario Land was still ongoing Captain Syrup would’ve been a great pick since we got rid of K. Rool.
This video was really disappointing. You usually go into these with much more depth and with a clearer vision of how both the game and characters would play. The part with your cuts mostly made sense and was interesting. But it felt like for the newcomers you were just listing off popular Nintendo characters who amounted to: “they can summon another fighter to do this thing”. I also understand that smash’s roster is already so perfect that there aren’t many Nintendo characters you could add that would live up to them, but some of these picks ranged from generic to genuinely god awful. Geno, Dixie, Doomslayer, Skull Kid, Raven Beak, excellent choices. Paper Mario, Waluigi, Ashley, okay. But Pauline, Anna and both Cynthia and Giovanni as just “fistfighters” are so bad, I genuinely thought you were setting up a bad joke. Someone else in the comments said it, but this video felt both “unhinged” yet “completely safe”. It’s very disappointing because you make videos about franchises I have no interest in and you manage to make it sound so exciting and whimsical that I get genuinely excited at the thought of these hypothetical fighting games. I didn’t get that feeling at all in this video. I hope I don’t sound too negative, I just didn’t like this video.
To be fair, Captain Falcon is sort of just “John Smash Bros” at this point. He’s inseparable from the games. Falcon punch and the knee of justice are too iconic to cut
As one of those few, crazed Sin and Punishment fans, thank you for remembering Saki. I’ve wanted him in since the Brawl days. Back when his assist trophy was revealed, Sakurai advertised the Wii shop channel release of the game on the Brawl Dojo, which is how I and many others got into the franchise. It’s also a big reason that the re-release did well-enough to justify a sequel.
Me fkn too I was so upset. Not only as a yoshi main and him being one of my favorite characters in Nintendo but just of how iconic and how much of a staple he is.
I don't buy that the Smash playerbase didn't know who Kazuya was. Tekken is just as big as Street Fighter, if not bigger. (Look at the sales of the games) That, and the fact that Tekken is the king and sole survivor of the 3D FG genre, means Kazuya absolutely deserves to stay IMO.
I think many smash fans do knows who Kazuya is (not all of them, obviousely, but any who is familiar with the fighting game landscape), but i do think many casual smash players don't. Tekken is probably as big as SF, but overall i think someone not specifically familiar with both would recognize Ryu more easily.
Smash players basically never play traditional fighting games so your better thinking in terms of general ziatguist or Nintendo brain and tekkens in neither unless you count pokken If you want a recognisable fighting game character then it’s either street fighter or mortal kombat and since MK is banned in Japan scorpions out only leaving street fighter SNK gets the brazil nod but not universally
Yeah, I’m gonna disagree on cutting Min-Min for Twintelle. There was a popularity contest held in ARMS for who the favorite is. Twintelle wasn’t even Runner-up. The runner-up was Ninjara. The winner? MIN-MIN
Not to mention that Min Min already had a leg up on the other characters, no pun intended, by the fact that she was the only one that had additional moves in the form of kicks, giving her moveset more spice than just Little Mac but Long

Give Ultimate Ganondorf's moveset to Samurai Goroh. He's the more popular character being one of the original 4 and having a flamboyant personality and more recognizable imagery. Plus he'd also already have a Sword to translate the Doriyas while being still slow, powerful and sluggish because of his physique.

Honestly making a smash roster where you have to cut characters is probably one of the biggest difficulties I've ever had to do when making a fighting game roster to the point that I've never been able to make my own smash roster cause when making a smash roster it's extremely subjective what somebody thinks is "necessary" for the roster and what is "cut worthy" cause what if the character you cut is a good portion of peoples mains or hell most of the characters you cut is somebody mains in some way no matter what you're always gonna to have somebody main missing which is why I am never able to make a roster that felt satisfying to me even if I add a bunch of requests somebody probably gonna miss their old mains since they're gone
No Ring Fit Trainee feels like a glaring omission given how well RFA sold (over 15 million units, more than every Splatoon game). No Three Houses rep also makes no sense for a similar reason, it’s the most successful entry in the franchise today. If anything, you can ditch Alear for a 3H rep considering how the game didn’t end up expanding FE’s audience like Intelligent Systems was hoping for.
I do agree Ring Fit Trainee should’ve been that obvious replacement for Wii Fit Trainer’s removal. I mean he already replaced some cut Xenoblade reps with others.

Generally speaking, Smash has a bias towards successful new EPD franchises (Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, & even ARMS). RFA is basically the next Splatoon in this case, & over 15 million units isn’t something you can very easily ignore. In fact, I’m so confident that they’ll get in that I’d put actual money on it.

I'm sorry but cutting Joker, Diddy, K.Rool, Olimar and basically the entire FE roster because you think they're irrelevant and then immediately adding Geno,Lyn,Dixie & Funky Kong, Skull Kid, and two retro pokemon trainers is *certainly* a choice.
That's even crazier, because why Lyn specifically? Why not Hector who is considered just as popular as Lyn, from the same game, and considered a better character in the game both story and gameplay wise who uses an axe, a weapon never seen before in Smash?

The funny thing about Sora is that he is owned by Disney and to get him in Sakurai needed approval from them and Tetsuya Nomura who writes the Kingdom Hearts games and so many people said Disney would be the issue but it turns out they said yes right way but Nomura wasn't sure since he wanted to make sure Sora being in Smash could fit in the lore of Kingdom Hearts.
Man still hurts sometimes how Sonic was one of the first third party characters in Brawl and been in every smash since but never got another rep with him while Cloud, Ryu, etc are more recent and got a fellow rep so easily 😵💫
Great video, but cutting Diddy Kong is a bizarre choice. Cutting Diddy and keeping Dark Samus is one of the wildest Smash takes I’ve heard. But honestly, that’s probably the only MAJOR objection I’d have.
I mean Dark Samus is an echo fighter so cutting her would put him in the awkward position of adding another nintendo character who is an echo fighter in. So you wouldn't be getting Diddy if you cut her, you'd get Dr.Mario.

I don't think that Digimon has enough ties with Nintendo games to be considered. Also the Pokemon company may want no "competition" in the game, hence why no Yokai watch characters either.

Digimon is very mallable and tends to be something different with each game and has its roots in Tamagochi-like things. Pokemon is very focused on there core formular with some spinoffs and side games. But they are both multimedia products but Pokemon far far outshines Digimon in that regard.
If I could put in my own two cents? E.M.M.I would make an AMAZING Metroid rep. The kill animations could make for great moves, the way they crawl around the stage- you know thise videos of “can you cross the underside of insert stage here with insert character here?” Make THAT E.M.M.I’s main gimmick. Have them be able to stick to the sides of the stage for a limited time so it’s not *too* broken, to really evoke that energy of being outsmarted and hunted by E.M.M.I.
I feel like the approach of this was kinda wrong. They would just return to a normal smash cycle where they cut some characters, keep some others, and add some new comers. They wouldn’t do 86 (or technically 83) characters for a base roster of smash 6, probably 50-65. Fun concept, but you cut yoshi so ill never forgive you

For the Wii Fit Fandom, Thorgi you do not know how many people still use Wii fit, it even came to the point that Nintendo had to clarify that Ring Fit Adventure can only be played on Switch and isn't an add-on for Wii Fit.

I just wanted to pitch an addition to you, Aaron: Cappy. One thing Smash doesn't have is a Mokujin. So how about the sentient hat? On the roster it would appear as Cappy with a silhouette beneath it. This would be a random (current or past) Smash character each time you choose them.
If I had to remove a character, it has to be Ganondorf. The character I would replace him with is a Ganondorf with a proper moveset.

The Robin cut is crazy. Robin represents Fire Emblem mechanically, plays different than almost every other fire emblem character, has chrom represented in his final smash, and is the create a character/deuteragonist of Awakening, so hes just as relevant as Chrom. Keeping Ike and Roys moveset? Its all Roy with one ike move. And roys moveset, even after 4 changed him, isnt THAT different from Marths.
It is puzzeling from all Fire Emblem Characters Robin would be the last to cut as he is also sole represantative for Fire Emblem magic.
Honestly part of me wants to thought experiment a fire emblem fighting game. All the protags make it, we can have some laguz units that play differently, include good playatyle variety. I think it would work really well.
I mean, at least there’s some consistency. I tend to see plenty of videos involving roster cuts in which Corrin and Byleth are cut, but not Roy. I really couldn’t care about who is playable (my favorites are Corrin and Min Min, probably the two characters that the most amount of people will instantly say should be cut), and I like Roy, but it’s clear Roy tends to be liked for his overall rush-down playstyle, memes/Melee nostalgia, GBA representation, and the Super Smash Bros series giving him such a much different personality from his original one that the Fire Emblem series has been trying to merge the gap for years. Of course, there are people who like Roy for just being Roy and would pick him regardless of how well or poorly he plays.
Regardless of people’s thoughts on the characters or the games they are from, Robin, Corrin and Byleth are the most unique by default with each of them representing core aspects of the Fire Emblem series [magic/weapon durability, dragons, and the weapon triangle (sort of) respectively; this also doesn’t consider how Corrin and Byleth incorporate the Fire Emblem itself through the Omega Yato and Crest of Flames respectively].
From the perspective of just keeping the most unique characters, they would be kept. However, obviously with cutting characters people would want other ones to replace them. Still want magic and weapon durability? Add Celica. Still want a dragon? Add Tiki. Still want the weapon triangle or just a character that uses at least 4 different weapons? Add the trio from Blazing Blade or Anna. These are characters that are argued to be more popular than Robin, Corrin and Byleth (at least given FEH polls). Plus, we can extend this argument to Roy. Still want a character with a flaming sword? I mean, Ike and Corrin are already there, and again there’s Eliwood.
Anyone can make any reason for why a character “deserves” to be in or not; every character has fans, regardless of how many joke people like to make about a character’s supposed lack thereof. I get it, Super Smash Bros. is all about the playable roster. Almost every character is added to increase the series’ sales, whether that’s adding “fan favorites”, adding a character from a recent or upcoming game, or help Nintendo strengthen ties with other companies. It’s a product and money is the most important, and it’s the reason why instead of Dragon King we got Super Smash Bros. 64.

I'm noticing that when ever Sakurai gives a character that standout like Sephrioth, Hero, and Joker, there's usually a downside. Hero's command select is inconsistent, Joker is not very strong without Arsene, and Sephrioth is light weight.
I think the reason why there are so many Fire Emblem characters is because Sakurai or Nintendo wants more safe characters. The Fire Emblem movesets are not very flashy compared the other RPG reps, but it's done that way because they also don't have much weaknesses. Or at least their weakness's are not as egregious as Sephiroth, Hero, and Joker.
In other words balance is hard.

I highly doubt any of the Square characters will be in the base roster. Sakurai confirmed that Cloud was hard to get into the game, and Square could demand more licensing fees by making Cloud or Sora dlc. If I had to pick one to return, I’d pick Cloud.

I think it says a lot that people are more so focusing on the cuts and not the potential additions because my god some of these choices for removal are mind boggling. Like removing every other FE character aside from one of the original 2 and a clone not even based off of him is such a wild move that it almost hides the fact that multiple iconic characters like Olimar, Yoshi and K Rool got the cut while Dark Samus and Banjo got to stay.
Particularly for K Rool. His reason for cutting K Rool makes very little sense seeing as the bastard was in the exact same position as Ridley: People were wanting the character in Smash for years. Also, I don't get the idea of keeping Chrom while cutting Robin seeing as the latter is a mage, which is SORELY lacking in Smash's list of Fire Emblem reps meanwhile 6 others are basic bitch sword users from a medieval fantasy franchise.

As a big FE fan myself, I can handle cutting down the FE characters to 2 or 3, but of all the choices, Chrom is a really bad pick. Yes, he takes elements from Ike and Roy, but from an outsider’s perspective, he’s just another flavor of “blue-haired anime swordsman.” Robin would’ve been a way better pick as an Awakening rep. Heck, Byleth would’ve been even better in my opinion, since while Awakening was the game that saved the franchise and all that, Three Houses was a GIGANTIC hit, and went way more mainstream than any other game in the series.
He cut Olimar for a more modern Pikmin character which is fair.
He allowed Dark Samus *specifically* because she's an echo fighter, so it's really silly to make it sound like he thinks she's a more important character than Roshi or K Rool.

They put Wreck it Ralph in Sonic All Stars Racing and Jack Sparrow in Sea of Thieves, it still baffles me that people thought they wouldn’t allow Sora to be included despite him being much less important of a character to Disney than the aforementioned.
Yeah, it was actually Nomura who was more trouble on that front than the House of Mouse, and most of Nomura's issues were with keeping Sora's Smash appearance congruous with Kingdom Hearts canon (which does not make his appearance in Smash _canon_, Nomura just wanted to make sure it didn't actively _contradict_ anything)

Even if the Belmonts were to get cut, Alucard's basically the mascot of the series outside of his father, his breakout hit is considered one of the most influential games of all time, and he's known outside the realm of gaming thanks to Netflix Castlevania. No reason to pick Soma over him
I understand the point of your “cut and replace” rule, but I feel like this hurt the roster more than help it. Many of the cuts and keeps felt like they were being controversial for the sake of it. For example, getting ALL the guest characters we got was amazing, but I don’t think a fighting game made by Nintendo should be bringing back *10* of the 18 guest characters while leaving out company icons like Yoshi and Diddy Kong.

Actually, having Shadow in this roster also makes sense from a 'Nintendo history' standpoint. Remember, Sonic Adventure 2 was one of the last, if not THE last, big first-party titles for the Dreamcast, Sega's swansong for console manufacturing. Then, a few months later, SA2 Battle hits the Nintendo Gamecube. In other words, Shadow the Hedgehog represents the exact moment in time when Sega went from Nintendo's primary rival to Nintendo's partner as a third-party game developer. It's not too far off from how Bayonetta became a Nintendo franchise when you think about it.
Plus, you know, Sonic Movie 3 means useful cross-promotion.
It makes it all the more strange how Shadow, The Ultimate Life Form, is not a playable character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

I think the main way to make a new smash feel worth it would be to revamp all the older characters. Luigi gets Luigi's Mansion stuff, Ganondorf gets his trident, and most older characters would get some tweaks.
Yeah, feels like most characters could be fun with a moveset that evolves with their game, like how Link changed slightly to fit better BoTW.
My idea is to massively remake all the characters with outdated movesets (pretty much all the ones before Brawl). And only cut the actually unnecessary inclusions that only made sense at the time (the Links, a lot of Pokemon and FE characters…). Then replace these with fan favorites that didn’t make it yet (Waluigi, Bandana Dee…)

Everybody's always complaining about so many Fire Emblem characters being in the roster for Smash, but that mainly comes down to how many characters are introduced with every entry. What's the other major series under Nintendo's publication that has so many "characters"?

Turn Fire Emblem characters into a separate Assist Trophy archetype, like the Pokeballs, and use the colored gems from Fire Emblem Heroes to summon them out. That way you get more representation in the game, and you don't have to make full movesets for them!

The biggest problem with FE representation in Smash is there's a lot of Marth-adjacent characters (moveset, family, or just hair color) and almost all are swordfighters. Getting a lance or axe unit, a mage like Robin, or heck give us a pegasus knight. I don't know enough to know who'd be iconic enough to make it in, but they all feel very homogenous. Byleth probably wouldn't have been such an upsetting addition if it weren't for all the others in already. Byleth isn't strictly a sword user & came from a recent breakout title. They could've been a big hit.

@@just4_stari honestly don't think you can do much better in the current era. There are just too many manga at this point. Kinetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsawman all demand at least 2 characters each on a roster that is already missing important pieces. And you can't make rosters of 60 characters.
The only way i can think they can make it work is by stricly limiting every manga to 2, or 3 characters at the most. Wich would make very difficult to pick the characters from some of them(even when i made the attempt i felt i needed to artificially split Dragonball and Dragonball Z)
@@noukan42 Could always do the modern option of having a lot of DLC picks pre planned. Launch a modest 20-25 character Roster, with the hope and intention that towards the end of it's life cycle they'll have 50-60 characters.
So there's a lot of backward logic in the video that I think sums up my whole feelings about cutting the cast this drastically for the next game so let me just list off some of the big ones to prove my point and leave it at that.

"They haven't done a lot with Rosalina in the past few years" Not only does adding Pauline to this hypothetical make this point meaningless, but she's essentially been upgraded to the core Mario cast in the spinoffs, which have made a point to include her in base in EVERY GAME. spin-offs like Mario Kart are just as, if not more important sometimes than the base games.
"I'm cutting Daisy because we don't need 2 peaches" When Daisy got added as a new character in Mario Wonder, that was a big deal, and as you said Peach is getting some new stuff to play with in Showtime so, in actuality, there wouldn't BE 2 Peaches in the first place as drastically changing one and not the other gives us 2 pretty different characters.
"Do I even need to explain why I cut the Links?" Yes, I feel like you do, because that's a iconic look to the main character that appears just as often as the adult form. It has as much reason to stay as the current version of Ganondorf.

I kind of found it funny that you added “popularity” and “relevance to the game” before mentioning “unique gameplay styles” when justifying what Fire Emblem characters you would keep, as if you expected people to ask why Corrin wouldn’t be kept considering how unique they are currently and how they arguably have more potential for moveset changes than Ike and Lucina.

@@hamstersandwich9917 Perhaps I was a bit harsh, but tihs frustrations comes from an overall frustration the community has brought out in me with the general concept of cutting down the roster in the first place. So many people cut it down waaay too much with very little thought put into it and often use the excuse of "wanting to make the old characters like newcomers" which feels like unnecessary work considering most of the old characters are relatively fine all things considered.

Personally I would have kept Robin to represent Awakening. Sure Chrom has moveset elements from both Roy and Ike, but Roy is already a second Marth echo in disguise, making Chrom essentially "blue Marth, but with Ikes up special". Robin is far more unique.

I'm okay with cutting Olimar ONLY because he was replaced with another Pikmin rep (who could just as easily have an alt skin that is the Leafling on Moss, and if you know the plot of Pikmin 4, you know why I'm saying that); Little Mac sticking around is also fine with me, Aaron gave a pretty good rationale as to _why_ he could stay, though I don't agree with cutting Yoshi or Diddy either. My personal biggest gripe is that of the three weird Nintendo history representatives (G&W, R.O.B., and Duck Hunt), he kept the one that, in my opinion, was the least worthy of being kept, since Game & Watch and R.O.B. have series seniority on Duck Hunt and I feel have a bigger fan following, plus they are even MORE obscure than Duck Hunt and, at least in the case of Game & Watch, represent different _hardware_ from Nintendo (R.O.B. is a peripheral like the Zapper, but I think the fact that he was marketed as a toy harkens back to Nintendo's earlier days as a toy company, thus making R.O.B. important for those reasons, plus he was inexplicably in Mario Kart DS _BEFORE_ Brawl, and I think that makes him a better pick to stay than Duck Hunt)

But I think one of the wildest things you said was that we should keep Ridley because we fought hard for him (true) but not keep K. Rool, who we also fought just as hard for. Sure Ridley was "too big" for awhile, but he was less obscure than K. Rool, which made the fight to get these characters was more or less equal.
Honestly, I feel like those cuts could work if you repacked them as new characters even if it's cheating a bit.
I think he was going for that with Rescue Corps if Olimar was an alternate skin but if you cut out Diddy, bring him back through Dixie as his partner as opposed to Kiddy and with Yoshi, bring back though Baby Mario (which I'd probably swap over Pauline. Good WTF choice but the price was too high IMO). As for the Belmonts, it's subjective but I don't mind it if you replaced it with another cool CV character even if you took out 1/3 of the Captain N crew (unless you count Palutena and Duck Hunt as Lana and Kevin's Dog and Zapper). Much like how I would cut Kazuya but bring his son Jin in to replace him. I know tough cuts had to be made but I feel like some of these choices could have been salvaged a bit even if it meant playing safe and ruining the point of this video by bringing back the axed. LOL

This video was really disappointing. You usually go into these with much more depth and with a clearer vision of how both the game and characters would play. The part with your cuts mostly made sense and was interesting. But it felt like for the newcomers you were just listing off popular Nintendo characters who amounted to: “they can summon another fighter to do this thing”.
I also understand that smash’s roster is already so perfect that there aren’t many Nintendo characters you could add that would live up to them, but some of these picks ranged from generic to genuinely god awful. Geno, Dixie, Doomslayer, Skull Kid, Raven Beak, excellent choices. Paper Mario, Waluigi, Ashley, okay. But Pauline, Anna and both Cynthia and Giovanni as just “fistfighters” are so bad, I genuinely thought you were setting up a bad joke.
Someone else in the comments said it, but this video felt both “unhinged” yet “completely safe”. It’s very disappointing because you make videos about franchises I have no interest in and you manage to make it sound so exciting and whimsical that I get genuinely excited at the thought of these hypothetical fighting games. I didn’t get that feeling at all in this video. I hope I don’t sound too negative, I just didn’t like this video.

Yoshi is one most iconic gaming characters of all time. Cutting him (especially over less known picks like Banjo or Captain Falcon) is crazy.
To be fair, Captain Falcon is sort of just “John Smash Bros” at this point. He’s inseparable from the games. Falcon punch and the knee of justice are too iconic to cut
As one of those few, crazed Sin and Punishment fans, thank you for remembering Saki. I’ve wanted him in since the Brawl days. Back when his assist trophy was revealed, Sakurai advertised the Wii shop channel release of the game on the Brawl Dojo, which is how I and many others got into the franchise. It’s also a big reason that the re-release did well-enough to justify a sequel.

I don't buy that the Smash playerbase didn't know who Kazuya was. Tekken is just as big as Street Fighter, if not bigger. (Look at the sales of the games)
That, and the fact that Tekken is the king and sole survivor of the 3D FG genre, means Kazuya absolutely deserves to stay IMO.
I have a bunch of smash fans myself and at best their response was "Oh, that guy, from like uuuuuh, that game".

I think many smash fans do knows who Kazuya is (not all of them, obviousely, but any who is familiar with the fighting game landscape), but i do think many casual smash players don't. Tekken is probably as big as SF, but overall i think someone not specifically familiar with both would recognize Ryu more easily.
Smash players basically never play traditional fighting games so your better thinking in terms of general ziatguist or Nintendo brain and tekkens in neither unless you count pokken
If you want a recognisable fighting game character then it’s either street fighter or mortal kombat and since MK is banned in Japan scorpions out only leaving street fighter

Yeah, I’m gonna disagree on cutting Min-Min for Twintelle. There was a popularity contest held in ARMS for who the favorite is. Twintelle wasn’t even Runner-up. The runner-up was Ninjara. The winner? MIN-MIN

Not to mention that Min Min already had a leg up on the other characters, no pun intended, by the fact that she was the only one that had additional moves in the form of kicks, giving her moveset more spice than just Little Mac but Long

He's the more popular character being one of the original 4 and having a flamboyant personality and more recognizable imagery. Plus he'd also already have a Sword to translate the Doriyas while being still slow, powerful and sluggish because of his physique.

Honestly making a smash roster where you have to cut characters is probably one of the biggest difficulties I've ever had to do when making a fighting game roster to the point that I've never been able to make my own smash roster cause when making a smash roster it's extremely subjective what somebody thinks is "necessary" for the roster and what is "cut worthy" cause what if the character you cut is a good portion of peoples mains or hell most of the characters you cut is somebody mains in some way no matter what you're always gonna to have somebody main missing which is why I am never able to make a roster that felt satisfying to me even if I add a bunch of requests somebody probably gonna miss their old mains since they're gone

No Ring Fit Trainee feels like a glaring omission given how well RFA sold (over 15 million units, more than every Splatoon game).
No Three Houses rep also makes no sense for a similar reason, it’s the most successful entry in the franchise today. If anything, you can ditch Alear for a 3H rep considering how the game didn’t end up expanding FE’s audience like Intelligent Systems was hoping for.
Honestly would be a funny spiritual successor to the Wii Fit Trainer. New moveset, but also kind of like they never left.

Generally speaking, Smash has a bias towards successful new EPD franchises (Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, & even ARMS). RFA is basically the next Splatoon in this case, & over 15 million units isn’t something you can very easily ignore. In fact, I’m so confident that they’ll get in that I’d put actual money on it.
@@carlosemilio5180 the thing is, the ppl that made RFA huge aren't the type of folks that regularly discuss video games online as part of their daily life much if at all lol. A lot like Wii Fit. It was impactful and touched the larger audience outside hardcore gamers that for better or worse are a lot of the heavy hitters in the industry make their money, and given the general fitness craze the past few years, I think RFA is still a very relevant game where it matters for Nintendo. A lot like Wii Fit in that regard. Of course not a lot of fandom discourse like you'd usually see but high chance it was played by and would he recognized by more ppl on the street than your favorite Nintendo series
I'm sorry but cutting Joker, Diddy, K.Rool, Olimar and basically the entire FE roster because you think they're irrelevant and then immediately adding Geno,Lyn,Dixie & Funky Kong, Skull Kid, and two retro pokemon trainers is *certainly* a choice.
That's even crazier, because why Lyn specifically? Why not Hector who is considered just as popular as Lyn, from the same game, and considered a better character in the game both story and gameplay wise who uses an axe, a weapon never seen before in Smash?

In all seriousness though, a fun idea indeed. Of course I had disagreements on choices and some of the logic, but comes with the territory.
The funny thing about Sora is that he is owned by Disney and to get him in Sakurai needed approval from them and Tetsuya Nomura who writes the Kingdom Hearts games and so many people said Disney would be the issue but it turns out they said yes right way but Nomura wasn't sure since he wanted to make sure Sora being in Smash could fit in the lore of Kingdom Hearts.
Man still hurts sometimes how Sonic was one of the first third party characters in Brawl and been in every smash since but never got another rep with him while Cloud, Ryu, etc are more recent and got a fellow rep so easily 😵💫
Great video, but cutting Diddy Kong is a bizarre choice. Cutting Diddy and keeping Dark Samus is one of the wildest Smash takes I’ve heard.
But honestly, that’s probably the only MAJOR objection I’d have.

I mean Dark Samus is an echo fighter so cutting her would put him in the awkward position of adding another nintendo character who is an echo fighter in. So you wouldn't be getting Diddy if you cut her, you'd get Dr.Mario.

I don't think that Digimon has enough ties with Nintendo games to be considered.
Also the Pokemon company may want no "competition" in the game, hence why no Yokai watch characters either.

Digimon is very mallable and tends to be something different with each game and has its roots in Tamagochi-like things.
Pokemon is very focused on there core formular with some spinoffs and side games.
But they are both multimedia products but Pokemon far far outshines Digimon in that regard.

If I could put in my own two cents? E.M.M.I would make an AMAZING Metroid rep. The kill animations could make for great moves, the way they crawl around the stage- you know thise videos of “can you cross the underside of insert stage here with insert character here?” Make THAT E.M.M.I’s main gimmick. Have them be able to stick to the sides of the stage for a limited time so it’s not *too* broken, to really evoke that energy of being outsmarted and hunted by E.M.M.I.
I feel like the approach of this was kinda wrong. They would just return to a normal smash cycle where they cut some characters, keep some others, and add some new comers. They wouldn’t do 86 (or technically 83) characters for a base roster of smash 6, probably 50-65. Fun concept, but you cut yoshi so ill never forgive you

Bro you can’t replace Diddy with Dixie, Dixie can’t be included into Smash without Diddy it’s the rules Nintendo abides by and has always been the case even in the Mario spin-off games as no other DK characters can be included unless DK & Diddy are in it first then anyone else can join it’s why Funky came to Mario Kart and was shown after Diddy in the Wave 6 teaser

@@brandonwilliams6119the spin-off rules apply to Smash as well especially since Nintendo mostly cares about Diddy being the only other Kong to appear in games with DK with the rare 3rd Kong once in while (or in both Sluggers and Tour’s case where multiple Kongs were playable) but you’ll mostly see only DK & Diddy together rather than any one else playable
@@popplio7891yup both spin-off and Smash Bros have never gone out of order when it comes to the DK characters, cutting Diddy is like cutting Luigi you can’t do that since Diddy’s the deuteragonist of the DK series basically being the series’ Luigi so you can’t cut him at all, it’s either DK & Diddy are playable or no Kongs become playable and DK goes in solo and what Thorgi does basically contradicts the rules Nintendo has applied so he should only have DK in his roster and no other Kongs at all should be added but instead his reasonings are a massive red flag
