I'd like to see a sequence of her fighting back to back with The Wanderer. Two master swordswomen fucking shit up, mountains of Phyrexian corpses. How badass is that?!
So the Wanderer was first released after Elspeth died and there was a lot of speculation that The Wanderer just was Elspeth come back but unaware of who she was.
Your storytelling has had me coming back since watching Bolas' story, commenting that I'd like to hear Vess' story and you saying she was next. Keep up the fantastic work and allowing us to "Explore the lore" with you.
Love this video. Elspeth is great character study on how people confront trauma: she carries a lot of pain and guilt, but Elspeth still raises her sword against evil.
(disclaimer: didn’t yet read the stories that followed “The Brothers War”, so no spoilerino is appreciated) Elspeth is truly a tragic character in the most fundamental meaning. She earns for a life of peace, tranquility, at a righteous place - Which is exactly why she keeps getting pulled into war torn places and ceaselessly ends up seeing herself at the heart of turmoil. That might sound counterintuitive, unless seen as what the Ancient Greek writers, ironically enough, refer as “a hero’s Tragic Flaw”. Elspeth desperate pursuit of peace, taken to it’s logical conclusion, meant that she would have to bring conflicts and wars to an end, specially when the aggression comes from wicked parties. So she fight. In the hopes that when the dust settles, perhaps she will get to live her pastoral idyllic life. Except that’s hardly the nature of war, specially in the Multiverse. In a way, to pull from the Greeks again, she is Sisyphean: She settles in a new plane, at the ready for fighting for peace; Only to, by the end of it, once again finding out that, while victorious in combat, she is once again irreparably tainted by it. Bolder rolls down to other side of the hill, she planeswalk again, and the process resumes. This is very much linked to things you mentioned; I personally see a lot of “Survivor’s Guilt” and plain “PTSD” - After all, who is more likely to take the stance of “the fighting comes first, than I can rest” then someone whose first years of life where spent utterly powerless, suffering at the mercy of an hyper-aggressive and overwhelming oppressive force? Going full “Parabellum” sounds like the most solid call from her standpoint. She is truly a highly underrated character. I think given the past decade of focus on “The Gatewatch” a lot of players who got into MTG during those years severely misrepresent her as “lesser Gideon”, which is ludicrous. Gideon was the lesser Elspeth. You think she wouldn’t jumped heads on to kick Eldrazi ass? Pfft, on a dime! There, I gave the uncalled hot take.
I'm new to the MTG community and this is helping out a lot figuring out the lore. Finding the stories of specific planeswalkers most interesting but super helpful to know what the Brothers' War and the War of the Spark were
My wife became a fan of Elspeth when she pack one of theros pulled her then 120$ card. Such luck, she reasoned, meant she must immediatly fall in love with this card and therefore character. Thank you, oh learned Lorebrarian, for I didn’t know much of her history despite playing since 2004. The lore was hard for 13 year old me to follow. Not that it helps me for fumbking through my first explanation at Theros' midnight release, but your video has certainly illuminated those otherwise obfuscated pieces of history I knew not. I thank you again, Curator of Curiosities, and wish you a lovely day.
Giada didn't die... Her ascent to angelhood released the angels from their statuesque stasis. Also Tezzeret isn't aligned with phyrexia, he's using them and spared Elspeth's life and gave her a cryptic warning that she may be the one to start phyrexia's crumbling
Tezzeret was Bolas' plant among the Phyrexians in order to keep tabs on potential threats to his own existence. He's also likely a sign that Bolas has developed some method of preventing Completion, otherwise the Phyrexians would have used the process on him. This is suggestive that at some point the Gatewatch will have no choice but to turn to Bolas for help, where he'll offer them assistance at a terrible cost (likely including his freedom).
@@PhailRaptor I'm talking in the actual dominaria united storyline. Also yes, Bolas did develop a form of innoculation against phyresis and vaccinated Tezzeret with it during the mirrodin/new phyrexia block
Magic has such a rich and deep history and lore. I love anything lore, and try and delve as deep as I can into it. Your videos and storytelling are such a fantastic dive. I honestly didn’t know about the more recent things about elspeth, like how halo can defeat phyrexia, and meeting wrenn, and leading the Gatewatch
Wow, I didn't think there was this much to know about Elspheth which is a complete understatement since she's literally been to hell and back 😐 ! Outstanding lore btw ✌
Great video, as always. It's just too bad and so sad to notice WotC's ever lowering standards for their storytelling in such a great story teller. All the newer Planeswalkers will never have Elspeth's amount of backstory or character development.
Thank you so much for this amazing video of Elspeth. She is my favorite character and you dis such justice. I love your channel and videos above all other lore channels. You are so descriptive and do the lore justice! I was wondering of you are going to do an update on Elspeth's story now after All will be complete?
Just recently found out about your channel. Great job. I'd love to hear more about the other Plainswalkers. Mainly white and/or green ones, like Ajani and Garruk :)
This was a good video. However, there is something I would like to add. Near the end, you raised the question of whether Elspeth could banish the darkness of Phyrexia looming over the horizon. However, she also needs to banish the darkness of Phyrexia from someplace else. The biggest question for Elspeth is whether she'd be able to excise the darkness of Phyrexia _from her own heart_ (i.e., will she ever be able to find healing from her childhood trauma)?
I just hope she stops trying to find things to put her hopes on... And like, embrace her own potential to lead herself and others . I didn't even know she wasn't from theros, and now I know all this nuance . Thanks !
I want so badly for it to be revealed that Capenna is connected to Serra or maybe even IS SERRAS REALM. Like how insane would that be? Also.... It sucks that this came out pre-March of the Machine where Elspeth became a deity
I'm always happy to see one of your character studies and this time its on of my favorite planeswalkers, so once again thank you! Theros was kinda of a disappointment for me as while sure it was Greek themed, I had hoped the gods would be more like embodiments of the their colors. However, instead of showcasing White's collective focused or Order based faults in his villainy, Heliod is very black in motive. Not helped by the sequel's story being as you said cut, though Heliod reviving Daxos was a weird but nice surprise. Its too bad he and Elspeth never reunited. Its really fitting that Elspeth is replacing Gideon, (RIP) they're so similar, even down to having connections with Heloid and theorized be divine in nature
Another beautifully summarised and narrated video. Keep up the amazing work. I defo think she is an angel - planswalker. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we haven't got one of those yet I think...
We don't, unless you count Serra herself I suppose. If I remember correctly pure demons and angels cannot be planeswalkers. Even Ob nixulas was human once I'm pretty sure. Thus why the theory goes she's some kind of angel hybrid or demi angel or something.
@@Parmesan_Seeker Yup. I wondered if Serra was an angel - she may as well be one, but I'm pretty sure she was human. Yeh, Ob being a Demon/human planewalker, I figured an angel equilvant would be awesome.
