- G'day fellow cocoa enthusiasts! Enjoy watching my reaction to the recent film 'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.'
(I refer to the villain as a Disney Villain later in the video. This was clearly a slip up, I know it's Dreamworks. Just thought I'd say here since a number of people have mentioned it.)
This is my second video ever on TH-cam so I'm still trying to figure out how to do all the editing well and knowing what I can and can't have in my videos (copyright related stuff). This is all very exciting for me and I appreciate everyone tuning in and watching! More to come!

I took my 6 year old to this movie with her 5 year old friend, and the wolf scared them a lot but at the end they said it was fun to just watch it for one time😂😂😂

11 years later they make a sequel to a spinoff to a sequel and give us this. The bar for the next Shrek and Kung Fu Panda films has been set darn high.

@@RedDeadDepressionist Yup, really sad. What's worse is that it sucks in a very uninteresting kind of way, not even bad enough to be good meme material. It's more of a Big Hero 6 than a Shark Tale, except not even as good as Big Hero 6
So the theory is that Softpaws actually was at the Chapel but told Puss she wasn't to make him feel less awful about leaving her at the alter.
Makes sense. All she really cared about at that point in the film was helping him open up more and be vulnerable with her.
That actually makes a lot of sense, especially considering how she seems to be blaming Puss throughout the entire movie up to that point, so it wouldn’t make sense if she hadn’t been there to see that he didn’t show up.

Oooft, speaks volumes into just how powerful he is. Was just playing.
I hold to the idea that Death isn't a villain. An antagonist, yes, but not a _villain_. It is a distinction that gets lost a lot of the time because so often antagonists are made to be villainous as a shortcut to setting them in opposition to the protagonist. Death isn't... evil. Not the way Jack is. He's fed up with Puss, and... rightfully so. In the opening scene, we get Puss throwing a party in someone else's home, putting everyone there in danger from the arrogant governor... and then, because he cannot stop himself from showboating in the fight, he busts out the fireworks and wakes the sleeping giant, putting the people in even more immediate physical danger from the giant. Sure, he defeats the giant and saves everyone, but that's about as "heroic" as saving people from a burning building that you set on fire by being completely careless. He hasn't valued any of his lives until now, and he hasn't valued the lives of anyone around him... everything falling secondary to "the legend." If _anyone_ would piss Death off, it is that kind of person... because they are awful people, but they think they are good, and convince others that they are good. Even when he pops up as they are getting away from Jack, Puss starts showboating again, proclaiming his use of the gold coins as a gift... when it was really a way of manipulating the people into forming a barrier to stop their pursuers. He didn't do it to be good to them, he did it to use them to save his skin, but he played it as being a grand, generous gesture. So, yeah, that proved to Death that his depression didn't change the aspect of him that Death hated, so he reminded Puss that he was right there. Heck, even the time at Mama Luna's wasn't Puss starting to value life, it was him giving up on it. It wasn't until Puss showed that he valued not only his life, but the value that he brought to others and that they (in turn) brought to him that Death finally said "Okay, I hate to admit it, but you finally get it. Live your life."
Kinda sad and wholesome detail was Mama Luna putting mittens on her cats instead of declawing (which is parallel to Kitty who was declawed). Declawing is a horrible practice and I'm glad Mama Luna didn't choose to do that.
Also, idk if you caught it, but they made it a fact to point out that if you say your birthday wish, it won't come true. All the characters would reveal their wish, foreshadowing that none would end up making it.

At first I thought that Perrito was going to be just as annoying as Donkey, but he ended up being my favorite character.
Same! I love how he was so pure and selfless that it seemed too good to be true for Puss and Kitty.

Who would have thought a sequel to a spin off would be the best animated film of the past few years. That sounds like it should have been direct to DVD trash but it was legitimately a masterpiece
Yeah crazy hey! Shows what good writing and heart can do.
I love how a lot of tropes were subverted in this movie, along with excellent use of good and effective tropes. Jack Horner being an irredeemable monster who's just enjoyable to watch feels like such a spit in Disney's face for their constant attempts at making sympathetic villain's or twist villain's. Goldie and the Three Bears being a crime family is great, and their chemistry is absolutely solid, who learn that even if you're not blood related, having a loving family is what truly matters.
Then there's Death (Straight Up) who adds a level of fear and terror to the movie. He comes for Puss do to having wasted and took his extra lives for granted. Despite initially going to kill Puss do to his lack of respect for life, we see he has a code he follows, as he didn't kill Puss once he realized the arrogant legend who believed himself immortal that he was hunting isn't there anymore, and in its place is someone who learned to love the one life he has.
Perrito subverts the "annoying comic relief character" trope by being a genuine good boy and a precious cinnamon bun who needs to be protected at all costs. He's so optimistic, unaware of how he was abandoned and even almost murdered by his so called "family". He's able to see the beauty in life, and helps Puss realize the value of one life. Then there's his amazing moment where he simply puts his head down on Puss and helps him relax from his panic attack.
Kitty Softpaws isn't an obnoxious girl boss type of female character. With how things have been I was worried she'd become one dimensional. She easily could of been one of those shallow "do no wrong" Mary Sues, but she isn't. Her taking the initiative in fights makes sense do to Puss being on his last life and being afraid of dying. We also see that she understands that Puss didn't mean to hurt her. She pretends that she didn't overhear the conversation with Perrito after Puss has his panic attack, and even pretends that she didn't show up for their wedding either, all to help Puss feel better. At the end she learns to trust and falls back in love with Puss.
Then there's what I feel is definitely a knock at Disney and the whole Pinocchio stuff recently, with that one flash back with Jack and Pinocchio that sets up Jacks motivation. It's shallow and petty, further feeling like a kick in the butt to Disney and other overly complex characters who have tragic back stories that aren't actually fleshed at well, and do really bad things despite the tragic back story that completely invalidates that tragic back story set-up.
This movie really came out of nowhere, ended up going harder than anyone expected and overall is an amazing movie. It's hard to believe it's a sequel to a spin-off of Shrek of all things.
Absolutely killed it with this breakdown. Dreamwork’s having a go at woke Disney and just creating good story telling over everything else was my big take away. It’s so refreshing to know there are still big studios out there honouring the craft/art form.
@@thecocoacouch Well, about Perrito... if you think about it, there is basicaly hidden meaning to his challenges. "Pocket full of Posies" is a song about the Black plague (and we see those seemingly harmless plants becoming deadly). "River of relaxation"? Going with the flow no matter where it takes you and no urge to control your destination, basicaly means giving up. Field of "Quick and easy solutions"? What is the quick and easy solution to all your problems? Yep, suicide. So in the end, Perritos challenges were actualy the darkest of them all.
And don't forget. Puss is a "male lead" that actually lives up to his own legend and is not just an opportunist jackass. Yes, we find later that his life wasn't as perfect as it seemed and heck, he did have a huge ego... But considering his skills, he had some reason for it. People do love it and he has done so many incredible things and no one really discredits that. He IS a legend. And by end he shows his skills aren't just empty bravado.
@@GLIEPNIR Yeah. It feels like it's really becoming increasingly more rare to see good male leads and good male characters in general, what with all the absolute insanity of current year. People seem to think that female characters and female protagonists have to be Mary Sues, or they have to be validated at every turn by all the other characters. It's not as hard as these people assume to make a female character that's likable while having flaws.
The original Mulan was a great movie. Mulan certainly didn't have it easy. She trained herself hard and overcame the challenges and discriminations that make sense for the time period and setting. Now when you look at the modern day live action remake... Yeah, it's a night and day difference in quality.
In media today it seems that men have been relegated to the role of being dumbasses. I haven't seen many commercials in recent years where a man (especially if its a white man) isn't portrayed as an absolute moron while the women are shown as these perfect beings. I have no idea how things got the way they are, but it's depressing to see the amount of positive male role models dwindling like this.
@@GLIEPNIR Yeah was super refreshing to see a male lead character not be humiliated. I was worried they were going to make Soft Paws way better at everything than Puss. Luckily they made her have a unique skillset that Puss lacks in and still support and champion Puss instead of humiliating him. Can't fault good writing.
Wolf went straight up there with Eris as one of if not the best animated antagonist

27:02 Unexpected move? No, Death knew that move and had both his sickles closing from the sides. If Puss had still only had the one blade, Death would have traded a painful kick to the face for a fatal slash or stab. Kitty's Gatito Blade saved Puss twice in that fight. If he had still "walked alone", he would have died. Even if Puss had made the wish for more lives, Death was literally right there and entirely capable of taking all of the new ones, too.
Yeah you’re right! I did mean unexpected in the sense that I was expecting Puss to continue his spin instead of flipping it into that stomp he does on Deaths face.
During a giant fight scene, at one point the crowd is performing a wave, like in a stadium, during a match. Pause that sequence... Then look at the back or corner of the scene, in a shadow. A doorway, I think... And there he is, watching Puss... Not sure if he is whistling in that scene, though. That is the first scene the wolf appears.
Next time I watch it I’m definitely pausing there. Makes sense tho, makes it more haunting the fact he’s been observing every life Puss has had and has been there each time he’s died.

I had to rewatch cuz someone on reddit pointed it out, and omg that is awesome.
Notice how Puss doesn't need extra lives to be a hero - he's pretty much is untouchable when fully focused. All of his deaths have been the result of him showboating.

GDT's Pinocchio is going to be tough competition. I'd personally lean towards Puss in Boots 2, but the Oscars rarely give Dreamworks recognition. 14 nominations but only 2 wins.
When it comes to the Midas Touch or The Hand of Midas, yes you can remove your hand to stop the spread.
This is a reference to Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
You’d have to be so quick tho too! Now that’s a movie I haven’t seen, and most of the Disney Renaissance sequels.

When it was revealed that Puss didn't show up to his own wedding to Kitty, my jaw dropped
Yeah that got me too. It was like a double shock tho. First being the were even “there” as a couple and secondly, he left her there.
For that spiderverse feel, they animate using different frame rates causing that choppy feel. (Note:this is a very simplified explanation and there are many videos explaining this in detail)

A detail I love that isn't explicitly said is just how prideful cats are, both Puss and Kitty both have customized cat themed weapons, wouldn't make it a big part of your image if you weren't so proud
Also Death is so arrogant that he doesn't expect puss to kick him solely because he thinks Puss is a creature of habit and arrogance that he'll win his own signature way every time

@@PlagueRatt I wouldn’t say arrogant, cuz I think most would expect someone to behave the same way they always do. Puss changed quickly in a pretty short period of time, and death also underestimated how greatly he would influence puss to change (near death experiences tend to do that lol)

I was sceptical at first like most but obviously it turned out fantastic.
@@thecocoacouch oh for sure 😃. I saw the trailer and thought that it was going to be kinda boring or too humerus. But nope! It was the exact opposite! It was a lot more interesting and action packed as well. It was nice to see a movie that was interesting and worth seeing. Don't get me wrong, some of the newer movies are good, but this movie had more of a classic movie feel that made me want to watch more!! Something that I feel other movies are lacking. So over all great reaction! Hope to see more videos like this 👍.
If you look closely, you'll see a lot of Disney references, especially the magic bag and umbrella which belong to Mary Poppins
The song that the nine lives sing could be, and I might be wrong, the theme for the Netflix Puss in boots, the animated series.
Speaking of baby unicorns, the ones pulling the evil carriage were the baby unicorns. You can see that their horns were sawed-off.
I don't think so if the Midas touch touches you if you cut it in time, the blade itself will be turning into gold
I just figured out that when the map to the wishing star was shown as blank, it was a reference to kung fu panda the dragon scroll

@@thecocoacouch indeed, the references were there for a short amount of time just give you a few seconds to figure out. And you're like "Where have I seen them somewhere before" because Shrek has done some cameos from Disney fairytales a lot. So I'm not surprised to see any of those references in this movie.
Between the Wolf and Perrito this film had _two_ of the best animated characters of all time in it.

I've probably watched a dozen other puss in boots reactions before this but yours was in the top 3. There aren't many men in this genre that seem able to pull off good reactions without coming off as inauthentic or cringe, but you seem genuine and enjoyable. I look forward to your next videos!

I heard someone say this movie depicts three types of villains you see in movies.
There's the misguided villain with Goldie. She acts mean and aweful to get what she thinks she wants but is redeamable when the truth of her situation dawns on her. There's the overpowered villain in Death that can't truely be ended but still must be resisted and outfought on some level to secure a temporary victory.A nd then there's the classic irrideamble a-hole in Jack who is just evil for the sake of being evil with no chance of redempotion but is still possible to be defeated.
Also cool fact (pointed out by the Nostalgia Critic): When Goldie looks at her book, if you take the first leter of every line of text it spells out 'You already have it.' followed by the last line '...And they lived happily ever after.' 😉

Yeap, when the town's people where outside doing the Wave as Puss-in boots was fighting the giant. Death is lurking under an archway hooded and red eyes glowing, watching the fight.
I saw a comment you posted saying you're new to this! idk if you already know this but just a little tip, Auto Focus isn't always the best, so if you're planning on staying a specific distance from the camera its probably best to leave Auto Focus off and calibrate it yourself. I noticed at a few points your camera's focus was out of wack for a second whenever you shifted in your seat. Just a lil tip!!

Of all the thrills, chills, jumpscares that t.v. shows, movies, heck even life itself have given me, the way that sword is kicked over & death says the first, "pickitup," scares me more than almost anything else ever has. He & only two other people I've met, can make that face of deceptive worry & concern but keep their voice tone of, "do it, see what happens, I know what's going to happen & so do you, but do you really, do I know what happen, maybe I do, actually I don't, or do I?" Seriously all those questions run through my head in the span of milliseconds & it's done through one look & a voice tone. I absolutely hate it.

But I just wanted to point out that as someone who studies music theory, there’s a fun fact here: Death’s Whistle is played in the G major key (normally, in horror, they will use minor keys to evoke fear, but major keys are used to evoke joy and happiness, especially notes like C, D, F, and G major, known as the happiest keys) they literally threw in musical characterization by placing the whistle in a major key to imply his enjoyment of doing his job and my mind is still blown every time I remember this fact

Yeah now that I think of it, I’m fairly sure from memory that it does the major triad for it which is usually used for “hero’s theme” in many films. So that’s wild! The first puss in the boots was. Lets be real a fun movie but it was not meant to be tu much seriouse but still was a success. Then years later the sequel is a masterpiece. Is like a Dreamworks super power. Disney sequels sucks, while Dreamworks sequel seems getting better and better.
Just a thought. Would it have to do with the stories and worlds they build? I’m sure Dreamwork’s could make great sequels out of Disney movies, I’m just wondering if Dreamwork’s films in general are better for world building then the very brief and final sort of nature of Disney films?

Dunno if anyone's mentioned this but; the animation style is actually 3D with hand drawn 2D animation over layed. Then for the fight scenes they reduced the Frame rate to 15 fps and 24, excluding El Lobo Muerta who was at 50 and 60 fps.

Death is not a villain, Death is just Death and he just came after puss because he didn't value his other 8 lifes

2 things i never got when was watching it was if she herself didn't come,then why was holding that guilt against him and 2.if she didn't come,how did she know whether he was there....then i realised she told that to make him feel less guilty
Yeah I like that theory, that she was at the church but cared more about helping Puss through his personal issues than focusing on herself and her pain.

The fight scenes were very inspired by Into the Spiderverse (mostly apparent in the fight on the wishing star) but also heavyly inspired by anime, even the character design during the fights changes to look like anime.
The first fight with the giant has to have been inspired by Attack on Titan.
Death is the Grim Reaper and let's be honest, one of the best vilain in movie history, animated or not.
Perrito was so surprising and the scene where he just puts his head on puss to calm his panic attack is a great example of restrain that talks even louder.
Maybe the best animated film since Into the Spiderverse.
An instant classic.
It’s my favourite since Spider-verse for sure!! It’s sad how strange it was that this movie shocked everyone, and how great it was. I hope animated films take Puss in boots as a lesson in storytelling.

Probably because it reminded me of ME as a younger adult when I decided (because of some GREAT role models) to suddenly take up acting as a hobby... but with NO experience OR formal training (AND with a historical dislike and anxiety toward public speaking!). So, yyyyeah, that was the most thrilling phase of my life, lol. It wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't generally been a thrillseeker already (except my tendencies had originally been more for roller coasters etc).

I don't know. One thing is to do your job. Another is to be sadist. He enjoyed the hunt, and he admitted that he was cheating by trying to take Puss' life by force, before it was his time. Even though he was understandably angry, it was still cheating.

its a completely different shape, material, material color, and magic color. loki's was metal, silver and gold iirc, with a curved handle ending in a blade like point with blue energy.
jacks is wood, straight handle with a G shaped head and has purple energy.
pretty big reach to say its a marvel reference and not a reference to some magic staff from a more obscure fantasy movie, or just a generic magic staff with no clear origin.

It does at least recently 😭 then again most of my forming animated movies were Dreamworks and Pixar. I think Disney was originally definitely tailored more to young girls for at least a while.
