Good video. My wife watched it because your wife was in it. She hates listening to guys droning on and on about tech stuff. Anyway, she has a z-fold 5 and while she's not into phones or tech, she is a multitasking machine and probably the best marketing foldable phones could have. She initially played with the demo while we were waiting for a pickup at The Big box store. The Samsung rep answered a few questions and it was just a matter of which color after that. Luckily after a year we have had zero problems. The only thing she likes better than telling strangers about her powerhouse folding phone is using her powerhouse folding phone. She typically gets 6 to 8 hours of screen time per day, all work stuff, and a couple more of surfing/reading before bed. We are both amazed at how little she uses her laptop anymore. I appreciate your down to earth approach to reviews, thanks guys.
I've always suspected Shane is under house arrest as he never seems to leave his lot. 😂 Now, he and his wife do a video and they're not in the same room? Something is fishy here! 😜 (that's a joke, fun video)
I tried a long time to get my wife to use an android. She finally give up her iphone and done it. She complained and hated the experience. The folding phone made no difference. She will not use anything but apple, period. Same for everyone in my family except my mother and I got her on a pixel. I truthful cannot stand the apple ecosystem, just not for me. And I like foldables to much to use anything else. One thing I learn from the experience, I will not pressure the wife to use anything other than an iphone ever again, lest I bear the brunt end of bitter wrath thrown upon me. 😂
Cool to see Mrs. Craig on here! This video was a cool concept and a fun switch up to watch. This is also a very practical and useful video because people do in fact interact with their tech/mobile devices differently and have different use cases. Thanks for sharing!
I upgraded from the ZF3 to ZF6, I'm a software developer, and I use it for both work and personal. At work, I'm use it to take notes with a bluetooth😅 keyboard mouse and stand instead of carrying a laptop around. I've even used both folds to remote into my work and home pcs.
I don't think I could ever go back to a slab phone. First fold was the ZF4, then the screen broke, and Samsung sent me the ZF5 for a replacement. Then in July I got the ZF6 cuz slightly bigger screen and also SQUARED CORNERS! I kinda disliked the rounded edges. I'm pretty happy with this fold. I absolutely hate the design of the Pixel Fold 2. Too many rounded corners, and the FRONT cover looks like an iPhone inside a case lol.
The 1st part of the video is still enough for me, not getting a folding device. Spend over $1k on a device that will eventually crack. As a whole, great video. Jessi did great. Tech reviews need more videos like this. To be clear. Not dragging your partner doing this. A person who does not mind being in front of the camera. Candid review.
I agree the durability needs to reach that of normal phones or as close as possible. That being said, the utility has been worth it enough to me that I just go the insurance route. If I'm already spending that much, another hundred bucks or a few hundred (if you want several years of protection) to outright get your money back is worth it. I just keep mine for a gen or two, have the standard warranty protection and maybe an extra year with insurance, then I trade it in towards a new one to get a steep discount and the cycle repeats. It's great that 4-7 years is the new standard for updates, but realistically...most people aren't keeping their phones for that long, so I don't think it's as big of a problem as people think it is. Phones are consumables. Not saying that's right, but realistically, you're dumping your phone for something new after a couple of years or a few max for most people.
When I'm at home I never fold my phone. Even on the charger I leave open. The only time it's folder is when I leave the house. The less I need to fold it the longer it will last. I don't baby my phone at all,I just don't fold and unfold alot.
@avalons343 This wasn't a durability test, this was about seeing how a non-techie felt about integrating a folding phone into their normal day-to-day. Trust me when I tell you the small differences between the 4 and 6 were not going to significantly change how this conversation went.
Wasn't a durability test but her first concern was how afraid she was handling it (she mentioned durability many times). Also her biggest use was reading and the brighter screens make a difference
You actually brought up an excellent point that I haven't ever thought about before - random screen cracking due to manufacturer error or some other issue. I was planning on buying a refurbished Fold 6 with about 64 percent certainty that I'm going to want to keep it (the alternative being an S24 ultra), and as a broke college student its a little concerning to hear how that phone is capable of breaking itself. Is that something covered by Samsung, or am I just absolutely done for if that happens to me? I don't want to dish out that much money just for a phone to kill itself on me in a few months.
Ugh. Should have given her the fold 6. I noticed a huge diff for the better between 4 and 6. Esp in weight. Shouldve asked her about the crease. Ime chicas like phones not so heavy and complicated ie. iphone. That and camera is huuuuuge deal too. Most ladies i know have actually been keeping their iphones for more than 2 years. This was amazing and fun insight from your wife. Cant wait to see her use more folding phones and give feedback! Subbed because your accents are awesome... Aaaaand so is folding enthusiasm lol
I have a Z fold 4, and I love it, I'm trying to leave Apple ecosystem, but I've been in for 13 years, recently I've got a Tab S9, making a new ecosystem, I love Samsung's software, and I dropped my phone several times and still working. Great video Shane.
At first I thought the foldable was fragile and definitely used it like it was. I'm now on the ZFold6 and I use it just like any other device. I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular device. I carry insurance and use a screen protector where I never did with my previous Ultra devices. I've found that having a case with Magsafe and using a solid holder really helps with that feeling of using it unfolded and risk dropping it. The flexibility of the multitasking allows me to perform office functions away from my laptop during my workday. That is the number one reason I bought this phone. Nothing else gives me that freedom so I'll stay with the foldables for the foreseeable future.
Really interesting to hear her perspective! I have ADHD, so for me the multitasking feels natural because I'm used to jumping between things and I've always been techie/fascinated with technology. Interesting to hear a more "normal" persons take on this. I like this content! I think it would be cool if you got your wifes take more on this stuff. Its fun seeing you two interact and I enjoyed the duality of perspectives.
Love my fold 6 I'm like Jessi and I have childishly small hands so holding a normal slab phone one handed is difficult and can not use it one handed at all but I can do it all on the cover display
No issues with my Pixel Fold's screen. However, i noticed the hinge no longer has the stiffness that it once had. So, tent mode is hard to use, if i don't have it set on a more resistant surface. If the sirface is smooth, the phone will slowly open up more. I have noticed some software quirks that would cause some apps to freeze from time to time. I don't know if it's an app software optimization issue or phone software issue.
I switched from an iPhone 14 pro max to the pixel 9 fold and I love it! I'm definitely a lot like Jessi, I'm not a power user anymore and just wanted the ability to watch my videos and read my articles easier. The pixel software is so nice. I left Android originally because of Samsung and realized I'm not a Samsung person.
I have a Fold 6. 4 nights ago, put it on the charger, woke up the next morning and the screen had 3 green lines through it. Getting it replaced now, the replacement will be here Monday.
Even if could have sacrificed the daily content I'd be unable to make on it, she'd be very hesitant to take it. The older model was less stressful for her to carry.
I've been offered a lightly used fold 5 for £550, which I am tempted by. How careful do I actually need to be? I've seen some Reddit posts of people trying to limit unfolding it to less than 10 times a day etc.
Yeah, if I had to guess, I would say 90% of people that try a big foldable phone for at least 30 days. Would not want to go back to a regular candy bar size phone.
Shane, you and your wife are proof that opposites attract, you look like you just walked out of metallica concert and she looks like she works at a library. But yawl do seem perfect for each other.📚
Hope you guys do more content like this in the future because this was not only a great perspective from an average user, it also reminds me of the type of energy me and my lady have. I can't do this with her (she's pro apple and you'll run into Jesus doing CrossFit before you ever see her with an android ) so it's good to see tech content creators do this style of content.
This was fun to watch. You'd think she'd be more familiar with these phones after you've been doing this content for years 😅 Glad she found some utility in it!
Great Video to you and your wife Shane - loved it - just my opinion on the foldable phone - I waited before getting a foldable phone I didn't want Samsung and I didn't want a Chinese ROM phone. The oneplus open came out last Oct 2023 and I jumped on it immediately - mainly cause it was oppo built and I've had Oppo phones and Oneplus phones in the past. I do not regret the purchase is #1 - the other is for years i would buy a phone and tablet and sell the tablet cause I never used it but wanted the option of a tablet when doing larger task things ie. Terminal programming - (I'm a Linux admin) the Oneplus open main screen size and tablet size is the perfect blend of 2 worlds and I love it - this is the longest i've kept a phone (normally get bored of phone after 3 months) i'm now approaching the 1 year mark next month and will only get another foldable if i need to upgrade at some point - and of course i will wait for the next oneplus variant when it comes out 2025. Hope this info helps anyone in their decision for foldable - it's a great spectrum to be in if you are hesitating about this type of device.
cool video, loved the idea and getting the perspective on a non tech reviewer. Im curious to see what she would think of the 9 pro fold. given that she likes the pixel OS, and the look of the pixels 9, and the camera processing, etc. any plans on letting her use it?
It's hard to find reputable reports on this stuff tbh. I see a couple channels just sort of stating stuff, but giving no sourcing for their info. Unfortunately, you can find broken folds from every launch as well.
Absolutely love my fold 4 used year and half and the inner screen ribbon needs to be fixed outta warrenty, screen is perfect but shuts off when you open it .
There is days I miss my Z Fold 4. But I am having too much fun with the Z flip 6. But I actually like the design of the new z fold. My pixel 7 is my backup phone.
I tried a foldable phone the original pixel fold. I thought it was pretty amazing looking but in day-to-day use I couldn't do it. I'm out and about all day long. I'm hardly ever home so I'm driving all the time walking here walking there and I found myself just using the cover screen instead of opening it up, there was no need to. If you work from home I can understand you opening it more. Same goes for the Samsung with the stylus, if you're doing normal everyday things you don't even think about the stylus you're using your phone like a normal phone, there's no need to pull it out. And your wife's right, the pixel phone is the phone to use. The Samsung phone. The software is all over the place. Double apps, it has no rhyme or reason. The pixel 9 is amazing and the software is amazing, it's not on your face.
Maybe you should've watched my trips and tricks video 😂 Serious note the mint mobile deal on the base pixel 9 was too good to pass up. $399.99 + year service for $180. Finally got an android and it's great. Currently comparing camera to iPhone mini 13 and all the little differences. Getting the confidence for a foldable eventually. Hopefully by then we have pixel desktop mode on foldable with better cameras
I like the concept of a folding device yet the price and the durability issues are the reason I stick with my now 3 generation old iPhone. I have an eye condition which causes progressive vision loss and the idea of a folding tablet in my pocket seems pretty cool. Yet I’ve seen multiple complaints about consumers getting the run around by Samsung, pixel. Oneplus when their phone fails at no fault of their own. Seems to me these companies are just using them as a cash grab and then deliberately giving customers the run around when trying to repair them. The alternative to that with Apple is you can literally walk into an Apple Store and whatever the issue is will be rectified the same visit.
i think its going to be a couple of years before foldable phones finealy come to a stage where they have got it right where there are not as many issues regarding the screens cracloing or getting bad peeling in the centre of the screen i had my motorola razr plus for only about 5 weeks before it stoped opening fully flat and since then i have been waiting for the screen to just stop working when unfolded. dont get me wrong i like the idea of a foling phone i just dont think the technology behind it is quite there yet i think in a couplemore generations it will be at the stage where you dont have issues with the screen when unfolded
I'm with her... Typing on a Z Fold is garbage. I've eased my pain a little by using Gboard and stretching it up to be a little taller. The keys are still skinny, but since they're taller I seem to make less typos.
At the end we could be wondering, what's the point of the camera under the display? Looks like the point is to avoid to use it at all costs 😂 I mean, even for a video call 4mpx sounds like too bad... and if you want to benefit the large screen for your videocall then you just need to accept to look bad? 😢
When you said 47% of people use a split screen, I thought that number was really really really high, and then you came back saying you thought it was a low number. Lol.
Brilliant concept! Your wive is still a bit above avarage with her knowledge. Recognize different UI and knowing the names of models. That is a logical consequencd of living with you I presume. 😊 But I also see a lack of experience with this UI. Not copying the outside screen on the inside screen is the one thing that makes Samsung unique and I see your wife not using that feature. Is she aware of this brilliant function? I had scratches on my Fold 5. But it's just the screen protector. Samsung replaced it and now it looks like new the last two months. Is it really a Crack or a scratch on the inside screen protector? Personally I really hate the Pixel UI. I don't understand the lack of customisebility. Just that Google search bar on the bottom that you can't delete or move is annoying to the max for me😂
Interesting, when she says she doesn't open the phone at work, I open my onePlus Open every time I use it, not sure if I remember how to use just one screen , OR just the front screen. I should practice using it that way, then again I think WHY ????
But then again I'm a phone user that also likes to read books on the phone and am also a avad or was an avad excel user, but now have moved to the office programs in Linux, Their spreadsheet program is awesome, so this is why I like the foldable, it turns into a pad I can carry around, google calendar on when opened on two screens is a total eye catcher for anyone that happens to see me open it, I live showing that one off,in a working fashion.
I think the fold 6 is a good phone. I do think the foldables are for a certain person. I now know a folder is not for me. I am in the field way to much for a foldable. I am always babying this thing. Where as a slab, I wouldn't be. I do like watching content and making content.
Too bad there isn't a means for people to try out a phone they are thinking about buying for a one week test drive. I am uneasy about buying a folding phone but it would be awesome to try a Fold 9 Pro for a week
That was my suggestion as well. She's already partial to the pixel anyway, so I think she should go all in. She did great, i really enjoyed this video, thumbs 👍🏾 👌🏾
Interesting video. It's obvious she was swayed by your experience. But, she still prefers the option of bigger for when she does want it. I think the vast majority of fold users fall here. They want big when they want it. Her comments about Samsung software was also telling. She ended up implying it was too complicated. She implied that she couldn't handle it. I don't like Samsung software. It's too much. It's like 100 different things, 98 of which I won't use. It just needs to go away. It would be interesting to see how she reacts with the pixel fold and Gemini in action. Or an OtterBox on it and let her go with it!!! The results of this video should also serve to affirm your method of reviewing. 47% of people don't multitask often. Most people don't care about the bezels. Most people don't care about many of the little things. I think that is the audience. People who drive multitasking with these folks devices are an even smaller niche group .a subset of a subset. So when I see videos of people using the device...I love it.
Since I bought folding phones people are considering me some sort of alien. First I had surface duo 1 Then surface duo 2 Then now I have fold 4...like your wifes
Good video but what i wish you would have asked your wife is now that she has experienced using a foldable as her daily phone, could she see herself paying upwards of a $1000 more than a base Pixel 9 or $800 more than a base Pixel 9 Pro? Thats the dilemma book style folding phones still face. Your wife also had a luxury many don't in that she was able to trial a folding phone long enough to gauge how she feels about using one daily. Sure, you can buy any phone from Best Buy or carrier store to test anywhere from 2 weeks to a month but many charge a restocking fee if you choose to return it and even if they didnt, many won't go through the hassle of using another phone for a number of weeks to test especially if like in this case you're going from a Pixel UI phone to a One UI phone that is mostly foreign to you. There are just a lot of variables that are subjective based on the user but a few things are very clear. The cost is still the biggest barrier to folding phones, book style, keeping them from really being mainstream. Many can deal with other conpromises but the immoveable object here is the price.
@@shanecraigtech Lol so in many ways then this experiment was moot since regardless of how well it went, your wife will likely never justify paying the big premium foldables cost. I can perform the same experiment with my wife and it will likely go the same way. I'm sure she will find value in what a foldable offers but she would never agree to pay what it costs. It's like lending someone a $150,000 Mercedes S-Class for a few weeks and their daily driver is a Toyota Camry, of course they will love many of the luxury amenities the Mercedes has that their Toyota doesn't but the Mercedes costs well over $100,000 than their Camry so again, kind of a pointless experiment when you know what the result is gonna be.
But we didn't know what the result would be. I thought there was a strong chance she'd like some things about it, but want to go back to a normal phone. I believe she said the same in the video. Her liking it as much as she has was a surprise to both of us. A Camry and an S-Class are both still just cars. A Z Fold and a slab phone are very different things.
@@shanecraigtech Both a slab phone and a folding phone can be used the same exact way if the majority of the time you end up using the folding phone closed, using the cover screen. The amenities difference between a S Class and a Camry is vast enough that the analogy still stands. Yes, both are ultimately forms and transportation with the base premise being getting you from A to B but they do so in a very different way. As I said before, the experiment is interesting but ultimately null and void due to your wife and many others not being able to get their head around buying a phone that's almost twice what a perfectly good slab phone costs. This experiment will hold more value if price parity between slab phones and foldables becomes much closer to reality, until that happens, foldables will very much remain a niche class of device.
There will be a follow-up

Shane, you're a lucky man to have a wife put up with all of this nerdy tech stuff.
My tech obsession doesn't impact her life much beyond getting a new Phone most years. Far from the biggest downside of being married to me lol.
Your wife seems lovely! Great video, love the perspective.

Most importantly, she's put up with me for a decade 😳

The best foldable, based on reviews, seems to be one plus open and honour v3
I loved the video. It seems like you guys get along really well. That’s beautiful.
Really cool video! Interesting to hear someone who isn't really a foldable person give their thoughts on them.

Having her use a fold from 3 gen ago isn't the best representation of the state of modern folds in 2024.
"Folds flat, a bit thinner" isn't that big of a difference lol. This was primarily about the form factor in general.

You'd think she'd be more familiar with these phones after you've been doing this content for years 😅
Glad she found some utility in it!
TH-cam is my outlet for info dumping so she doesn't have to be lol
@@shanecraigtech Haha very good idea
That was a good take from someone who doesn't care about spec sheets but just uses a phone. Hopefully, Samsung watches as her complaints are valid.
just a suggestion for Jessi. get futo keyboard and use the dictate function to "type". it works great.
cool video, loved the idea and getting the perspective on a non tech reviewer. Im curious to see what she would think of the 9 pro fold. given that she likes the pixel OS, and the look of the pixels 9, and the camera processing, etc. any plans on letting her use it?
It'll be hard to pry it away from me.. lol
Good content
Shane can you talk about the mate XT release? They're already breaking, day one.
It's hard to find reputable reports on this stuff tbh. I see a couple channels just sort of stating stuff, but giving no sourcing for their info. Unfortunately, you can find broken folds from every launch as well.
@@shanecraigtech ah ok
Lucky bastard.
Great video
Maybe you should've watched my trips and tricks video 😂
Serious note the mint mobile deal on the base pixel 9 was too good to pass up.
Looks like the point is to avoid to use it at all costs 😂
I mean, even for a video call 4mpx sounds like too bad... and if you want to benefit the large screen for your videocall then you just need to accept to look bad? 😢
$20 at u break I fix to replace the inner screen protector. I had to replace mine 3 times due to the same crack.
I don't think it's in the protector as you cannot feel it
My wife refuses to use foldable phones I tried her on one maybe a year ago and she didn't like it
Sounds like it's time to spring for a 2nd Pixel 9PF!
When you said 47% of people use a split screen, I thought that number was really really really high, and then you came back saying you thought it was a low number. Lol.
Great content
Jessi is cutie. Great info Shane. 👍
But then again I'm a phone user that also likes to read books on the phone and am also a avad or was an avad excel user, but now have moved to the office programs in Linux,
Their spreadsheet program is awesome, so this is why I like the foldable, it turns into a pad I can carry around, google calendar on when opened on two screens is a total eye catcher for anyone that happens to see me open it, I live showing that one off,in a working fashion.
Great video! Good to get insight from 'normies' lol. I get the 47% not using split screen. Even as a techy it's something I would use sparingly.
Bro zoom called his own wife 😂
We both have our own setups in different rooms to avoid echoes when we're gaming. Next time we'll huddle around the same mic I guess.
Your wife is awesome great energy
Agreed lol
Glad to see yall are doing okay after the storm! Cute couple.. 5 year plan to expand the family?
Three dogs is enough lol
I think the fold 6 is a good phone. I do think the foldables are for a certain person. I now know a folder is not for me. I am in the field way to much for a foldable. I am always babying this thing. Where as a slab, I wouldn't be. I do like watching content and making content.
Your wife needs a Pixel Fold.
I think if she sees one survive a normal year of use she might be willing to try one lol
I'm with Jessie. I prefer Pixel as well. I have the Pixel 9 pro.
Too bad there isn't a means for people to try out a phone they are thinking about buying for a one week test drive. I am uneasy about buying a folding phone but it would be awesome to try a Fold 9 Pro for a week
Why not give or get her the new Pixel Pro Fold...
That one's mine lol
That was my suggestion as well. She's already partial to the pixel anyway, so I think she should go all in. She did great, i really enjoyed this video, thumbs 👍🏾 👌🏾
Why didn't she use the 6 though?
Also, have her go back to pixel for a month now and do another podcast haha
Been on iPhone so long i forget about multitasking. I have the zfold6
You have a wife!? Jk just never knew 🎉
You should have given her a fold6, they feel completely different.. Fold6 is much more premium.
they really don't though lol
@@shanecraigtech i think so.. Just feels better, and the matte finish.
This is doppe ❤
Fold 6 is super expensive...
Does Jessi also have her own gaming room? 😮😂
Basically lol
Using this stat, I think people are still skeptical of using folding phones
Since I bought folding phones people are considering me some sort of alien.
First I had surface duo 1
Then surface duo 2
Then now I have fold 4...like your wifes
She hates the idea of spending what slabs cost as it is lol

The Samsung UI is trash in my opinion. Looks like it's meant for a child.
