- Most new-device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they're widely available, and we get to use them for a few days or a week if we're lucky as we work on our review.
Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It's a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it's a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity.
For about ... a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there's followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few weeks or months later, because everyone's already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe.
So let's do something about that. Let's see how we feel about devices when they're not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz.
___
Few smartphones can boast as strange and twisted a tale as the Samsung ATIV S. The world's first Windows Phone 8 device was announced way back at IFA 2012, getting us excited for the new Microsoft lineup and fueling speculation that Samsung intended to dominate the land of Live Tiles just as it's come to dominate the Android space. That bombastic summer unveiling, though, was soon overshadowed by an autumn of confusion, with delay after delay evaporating Samsung's chances at being first-to-market with a Windows Phone 8 device, and eventually making us wonder whether we'd see the ATIV S land on store shelves at all.
The phone ultimately debuted on European and Canadian carriers at the height of the blizzard season here in the U.S., and we were able to dig ourselves out of the snow long enough to give it the full-review treatment. Despite its delayed release, the ATIV S actually scored higher than its Nokia and HTC competition in our review, its success fueled largely by the added utility of its expandable memory and removable battery, along with the distinction of a 4.8-inch S-AMOLED display.

I really enjoy your reviews and feel that they are always pretty fair and accurate. You are one of the few TH-cam phone/tech reviewers that I can trust. Keep up the good work :-)
It's been nine months since announcement and five months since release. It's absolutely not too new for an ATB. ^MF
This device is still great if you aren't chasing for the newest and the best. Display is great, camera is nice (not the great low-light performance but with great LED), , battery life is nice and on WP it still works fluid and smooth. Placing W10M is going to take you few minutes to "hack" it on, but once you are on, it works great. It's good enough.
I sold it few months ago because battery started to die, and I didn't knew there are OEM replacements for $10. If I knew at the time, I wouldn't sold it, kinda regret it now.
My brother now have on, we bought it as almost new condition for a bargain and it's working great.
Oh, no question. If you've been soldiering on with the Arrive all this time, the ATIV S will be the biggest breath of fresh air you've ever had. ^MF
Love these re-reviews. Congrats on Iron Man 3 btw.
Got this phone on Sasktel for my wife. Whenever I use it (I'm a Note 2 user) I love it. It feels right, looks right, and just always works. Had the 920 been available I probably would have gone for it...but, for my wife's usage, this unit is great. The text to speech voice for our car is better than Android and Apple.
I got this phone now (feb / 14) for about 200$ without any contract or plan here on Brazil. The price is amazing and the hardware is STILL the same as new models like the lumia 925. Samsung has done it REALLY well, this doesnt seen to age anyhow and the price here in Brazil is amazing. Its about half the price of the s4 mini charged here and its a WAY better phone.
5:19 he must be calling Captain America asking for some help against Loki ;)
Fisher .. Would you please make a comparison between your Lumia 920 and Note II ??!!
first time I've see this phone... I like it.
I would love to see the Droid Razr M get the After the Buzz treatment. Curious about how other users impressions about it after months of use...
nice video i never tried a windows phone before but i have to say the camera quality looks very good! The device seems to be also very responsive A+ in that dept
This phone has been my favourite windows phone to date. MicroSD, large screen and amazing battery life makes it my main device. Nokia take Note.
This may be considered a mid-range phone but I check the tech news websites everyday waiting and hoping for Sprint to pick this phone up. This phone will be leaps and bounds better the HTC Arrive I have now.
I love android and wp8. Wish I had the Ativ S. But my Lumia 920 kicks ass.
It's available at Rogers in Canada.
i don't even own this phone. but i still enjoy watching the video while eating a meal!
Despite being an international model
This was never launched in India, where Samsung practically rules the market
The Samsung Focus was soo perfect...where did they go wrong?
Is Nokia City Lens the only application that is exclusive to Nokia phones? The other HERE applications seem to be bundled in.
HTC Desire HD is quite old now, why not make a video abut that one?
This is the only WP device I really found nice but Samsung did not give this phone enough love. It could have been really big out there. I played with one yesterday while waiting to get a cover and it's a really nice phone!
I wich samsung would show something like an Ativ Note device at IFA. Could be a great push for the windows phone 8 platform and a way of making me finally get one
can you tell me where exactly?
It looks exactly like the note 2!
ohhhh. I thought he was the TV Van tech guy who helps Tony Stark hahah. :D
Thanks
Costs like 250$ in germany, without contract.
Michael Fisher was on Iron Man 3?
Heck ya. This phone is really good.
this is so cool
What if Samsung makes two versions of the S4: an Android version and a Windows version?
The HERE apps are in every WP, but Nokia has looots of Lumia exclusive apps that make Lumias so freakin awesome.
Yeah, you're right. But I for one would buy it; however, I can't speak for everyone. And with the popularity of the S4, maybe Samsung can finally create the first big hit for Windows Phone OS, and more importantly, for Microsoft.
I don't think we will see an Ativ Note device for qite some time. That's because the Licence cost for Windows Phone are pretty high so an Ativ Note would maybe cost around 800,-$/€ when released since the Android Version already is at 600$/€. I don't think this will be working out. :(
how i wish nokia has that big screen also...but im ok with my lumia.....and satisfied with windows os.....
Damn the Windows interface looks good. I can´t understand how even the S4 lags with android, even a little and every Windows Phone i´ve seen, even old ones never lags!
bought it for 500€, so yes go for it!
Yep I really wanted to try something new but I found that I really don't like windows OS just yet :(. Not enough apps compared to android and iphone just yet but the store is growing =D
Yup
omg your awesome i fricking love ur voice
GUYSSSSSS, to type an em-dash, u use alt shift dash on a mac (nt sure on pc)!
-see?
"Goodbye" lol
that would be cool but confusing, and i dont think there's enough people who would pay premium for a windows 8 device, and also, many of the hardware in the s4 is not compatible with windows phone 8
The Samsung Ativ S is really a nice phone when you see it in person, nice display big screen, its amazing for Office also! It's just the back on the device that's so ugly lol
i like when they do this
iron man reviews ativ s...awesome
I like the ativ s.
Sprint will be getting the Ativ S. The rumors are true.
already a year ... :( sigh.....
I feel like the ATIV S somehow manages to look better than the just released S4... hmm.
I actually felt the exact opposite, somehow though this phone is too old to be revisited.
The WP8 I would've gotten if I had any actual interest in the platform.
This phone had buzz?
I can buy it for 250 €, would you advise me to do it ?
Nice phone. Getting it soon !! And yeah I made this comment from my S3.
I've never even heard of this phone
Just saw an s4 ad
Do the LG Optimus G
guys, not only Michael Fisher looks like Tony Stark but he also shares the same Astrological sign like him which is Aries. Weird huh? :)
Its only 250€ in Germany :)
looks like a note II
Wow this is one Windows phone that completely fell under the radar. I seriously forgot Samsung even made a Windows phone. I would Microsoft would definitely benefit if Samsung pushed out more Windows phones even in the entry level department. Since entry level is where Microsoft focusing on they should bring other oems to get on board.
the colors looked so bad next to the 920
5 months is really not that long.
Samsung should port their S apps to their windows phones
its an sgs3 running an app-less blah os
Iron man after the buzz...
Lol
Why don't companies like Nokia use a powerful quad-core processor? Why do they keep on using outdated dual core processors? If I am spending this much on their flagship device, I expect that they can atleast offer me a good processor !!
You must of loved it though to buy it in the first place...........
Nice phone. But windows phone will be one I never even think about. Nor recommend
I'll never buy a windows phone.. Seem to dull
HIIIIIIIII
I promise...if you do this the the HTC One before 2 years... I will strangle you personally...lol
I'd buy a Windows phone if they had better app support
I like this way better than the Nokia Lumia line, at least in terms of aesthetics. The Lumias look like awful childrens' toys. Anyway, I doubt Samsung will ever be a big Windows phone manufacturer. They can't skin the crap out of it until you forget it's Windows, like they do with Android.
Samsung is too complacent with WP. Like they made the ATIV line out of a contract or respect to MSFT or something. They have the Galaxy line and that's where practically all(!) Of the money is, so they can get away with not supporting WP as much as HTC or Nokia is supporting WP , which is sad.
Come on Nokia rules wp
neah... better with android :D
😁
oh god i hate this phone lol. I am trying to sell mine but no luck so far.
lol
This phone is a fail get the 920
Mehhh who uses wp
馥甄
"This phone is a fail" No Windows Phone is a fail. There seems to be no life on Windows Phone, Nothing exiting and nothing to be proud of. Android is pulling away from every other OS so that's where I'll be putting all my money.
The intro is getting old now
