Also- you can take any type of sticky label and make a funnel out of it. Shipping labels with the stick outward make EXCELLENT market funnels for filling. They stick right in the barrel for you and you can size them to any shape.
This is perfect timing because my white seems almost empty. I've got white acrylic ink, so I'm going to see how I like that before I go buying anything else, but it really was easy to refill it. Messy, but I'm fine with that over throwing it away when it's empty and wasting all that plastic. Thanks so much!!
Great tip. Ball bearings are such a helpful item to keep on hand, and not at all expensive. We had a junk drawer in the kitchen of our old farmhouse when I was a kid. My dad was an avid gardener and kept a small Ford 9N tractor and some other implements. He used to burn out ball bearing rings so when he had to replace the last one he would always purchase and extra or two to keep on hand....in the junk drawer, of course. It was a 3-4" rubber ring with a track that held the bearings....like a ball chaser toy for cats. I'd get caught up chasing those bearings around that ring...well, probably not for hours, but it seemed like it. Now that I think about it I may have to see if I can find one of those. It would make a great retro stress toy ;)
If you have any diabetic friends you could ask for their used syringes with needles removed. The syringes will allow you to fill the pens more quickly than using droppers.
This is AWESOME, Lindsay! I haven't done this with paint pens, but I have made ink from empty inkjet printer cartridges. There's sooooo much ink to be had. It works well in brush markers and depending on what kind of ink your printer uses, it's very permanent, quick drying, and vibrant. And it's fun to mix your own colours. I've also used it in fountain pens. I refilled disposable Pilot Varsity pens at first, but now I use it in other fountain pens as well. I did a tutorial but I would love to see what you come up with if you try it! Also, a syringe makes it much easier to fill in one go. I would use a larger one, no needle, with the paint filling pens.
@@thefrugalcrafter My cartridges have a sponge in them so at first I was adding water from the tap into the little hole where the sponge is to make them pliable. Then I wigged the sponge out of the little hole with plyers. Or, I would soak the cartridge in a tray of water and poke the sponge to disperse the ink into the water if I was dipping a whole sheet of paper, like with tea staining. The much easier version is to add water with a syringe to the sponge and then extract it with the syringe; no pliers needed. AND you can also substitute alcohol for the water to make your own alcohol inks. I've made sprays, but you could do dropper bottles, too. The syringe makes it much easier and it's AMAZING how much ink is in one of those little sponges! Mild Liners also unscrew so that you can add ink, but even regular highlighters or felt tip markers, (like Crayola) have a way of pulling the end cap off with pliers so that you can refill. The syringe makes it faster, easier, and way neater. You want the kind with the blunt needle, or for larger ink capacity like with your paint pens, no needle.
I'm a big user of fountain pens. So much so I used to go through a bottle of quink a week. Until I found food coloring. Straight up food coloring is soooooo much cheaper and I can make any color I want that shades and sheens to my desire. I've also used clear uv ink with food coloring. Talk about extending. Thanks for the printer ink idea. Lord knows we go through enough of those too.
@@phillipstroll7385 That is so cool! I've never tried food colouring. Between printer ink and food colouring, I'll never need to buy ink again. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you so much for this video. I try my best to recycle everything and it's always bothered me that I couldn't refill my posca. Lindsay I love you! Thank you for posting this with all your mishaps! Losing your ball and all the “DIY don’ts” 😂❤ I have been looking for a good video to refill my Posca and your video was perfect! I’ve been watching your videos for years now and they are so educational and entertaining and inspiring! I got a new TH-cam account a while back and hadn’t subscribed somehow! 😮 so glad I found you again! Thank you for providing such great content ❤
I remember you showing us how to refill the Posca’s, my hubby said why not unscrew the pen, I said doesn’t unscrew he was yes they do then unscrewed it, paint went splat and ball bearing fell out, he was oh that’s why you don’t unscrew! Lol I’m so not telling him you unscrew them know! Thanks for the Friday tip.
I think it is very expensive and not too profitable for companies to offer refills. I talked to a marker company once about it and there was a certain amount if sets that needed to be sold before selling refills could be profitable or to even offer open stock. That's why sets often come out first, then open stock and refill a later if they think it can be sustainable. I think its harder now with so many more white labled sets coming out cheaply.
Thank you. I’m just about to invest in multiple Posca pens which can be a bit pricey but knowing they are refillable makes it more economical down the line.
I am far more messier than you are. I was thinking maybe I should send over my empty Posca pens. :) You know I wouldn’t do that. Great saves on keeping them.
What a great idea. The funnel would have been perfect if you didn't have a ball bearing blocking the hole. 😎 I dumped 1/2 jar of gold mica powder on carpet 4 years ago, and every so often it shows up on one of my supplies.
Lindsay, so impressed by your problem solving and teaching skills. Had thought we were at the mercy of dark destiny and bad luck when buying expensive white paint markers. You change the whole game for us. Subscribing. Thank you and good luck. Jim P.S. Maybe adding a bit of printer ink to the block-out would give a few shades of blue and grey..........
I’m sure you know by now, 😂 but just in case… you can buy the needle nose bottles (like with box hair dye) to refill that will make it CONSIDERABLY easier for you. Great job! Great idea. I’m just getting ready to buy my first Poscas! Can’t wait!
If u dont have the droppers you could use a food flavor injector (i saved a disposable one from a marinade it came with) the tip of the syringe has a really big hole so even if is a bit thicker, consistency wise, it would go through. I had used it to mix lip glosses colors in their containers, so im sure it would work
Thank you for this tip. Do you think you can use acrylic paint that is used for paint pouring? I find that paint to more thinner than regular acrylic paint.
Lindsay, you are such an entertaining crafter to watch it’s almost like the educational part of your videos is an afterthought! Thanks so much for showing us what not to do and how to recycle what we have already paid a premium for. 💋Scrap Ibis Ronnie
If you want it runnier without diluting it with water, you can use a high flow medium to thin paint out. You can order empty pens, and put your own colours in them.
BRILLIANT! Avoids landfill and saves money. I haven’t any which are failing yet but not quite sure how to fill them with acrylic paint. I have lots of tubes of acrylic paint, do I add water to get the right consistency or something else? Just loving how you save us from unessesary expenditure, thank you x
I ordered the 29 medium point posca pens off of Amazon the other day. I really like them. I like all the different colors. Some of the names of the colors though don't really match the color if you know what I mean. Like I think one is called bright yellow and it's really like a school bus Orange. Or Tennessee Vols orange like the state I live in LOL. But wouldn't it be difficult to try to match up those colors? Have you done this? Or just the easy ones like white or black?
Thank you for this wonderful tip! I recently bought some paint pens and was trying to find a way to refill them if they ran out, since my reservations with them before was the waste aspect (I feel bad when I have to toss a marker or pen when it's out, I usually try to find versions that have refill options; I know molotow have refills for theirs, and was planning to just get those, but boy they can get pricey). I saw some people using acrylic flow aid medium to make the consistency thinner, and was wondering if you feel that helps any? Or would just water be best? Thank you again for a great tutorial Lindsay! Have a wonderful weekend!
Great tip Lindsay. Do you have any suggestion for the fibre tips of the very fine micron (& similar) pens? I’ve used them over watercolour paintings but the tip wears down way before the ink does in the pen.
Thanks Lindsay! Clockwise to loosen is very important to know. Must be a Japanese thing. Had trouble remembering that when changing Nikon camera lenses.
I love these tips. This could also be used to make custom blends of colours? I'm excited for payday to buy one because I fell in LOVE with the uni-pin extra fine brush and it's so pretty to write and do linework with... This is such a useful thing to know, as I love the idea of being able to reuse the pens. I'm definitely going to try this next time i have a dead pen. The poscas I use most though are the finer metal nibbed PC-1MR ones. You haven't by any chance come across a way of refilling those have you?
@@thefrugalcrafter I checked out that video but it doesn't seem that the PC-1MR poscas work in the same way as a micron. I tried pulling the metal part with some pliers but it wouldn't budge. Thanks for the reply though.
A wonderful frugal Friday tip! I am wondering how you figured out the caps were left hand threads? I think it was the right side something to do with wheel rotation not loosening the nuts? You are truly inspirational and I hear a chorus “such a Frugal Crafter!” Be well Lindsay
I am wondering what makes the Poska pen so special? I use them all the time and I like them however, if the Poska pen unique because of the paint? If you refill them, is it no longer a Posca pen but just a paint pan just a few questions for you.
I had another idea, besides using a diabetic syringe with the needle part removed for filling of the posca pens. At the vets office they have plastic syringes for giving pets liquid medicines. You might could ask for a extra one to use in your craft space. Just a thought. Take care and God bless. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas
I know exactly what you're talking about. They're a great tool to have on hand. Also, if you have kids, keep the droppers that come with children's tylenol, etc. You just never know when you're going to need a dropper.
Thank you for this awesome video! When one of my Michael's orders was delivered, they gave me like the "show room tester" ultra fine tip white posca pen instead of a wrapped new one. I couldn't believe it!!! But I can't be bothered to return it because they're usually always out of stock 😅 I recently tried refilling it with my white acrylic ink, and it wasn't very opaque at all, so I'm happy I have white paint to try instead! Also that's awesome to know that the pen actually unscrews!! So thank you!! Dumb question - White Uni-Ball Signo Broad pens... I've been VERY tempted to refill it carefully with my white acrylic ink using my little needle tip bottles, but I'm just not sure if that type of ink would work for a pen? I suppose I should buy actual white pen ink, or a new pen all together, but I like to MacGyver and use what I have 😅 What do you think?
Hello there, I have a white posca paint pens/ marker and I want to refill it but all I have is craft smart white acrylic paint I w a s wondering ho ws much water I should add to thin it out? cause I heard if you water it down to much it would under bind the acrylic. So I thought I'd ask.
This is such a wonderful tip, thank you so much for sharing the tip with us., Can you please share the link for the micron pen refills with us? Thank you
I don't know if the ones in the States are just easier to open or what, but mine bought directly here in Japan do not open for anything. They won't unscrew in either direction, even when using pliers! For a country that requires us to recycle, they don't make it easy to refill these pens at all! Going through the nib hole is so difficult and messy, and you end up wondering if it's actually filling up or not.
If you know of someone who hunts with shotguns, ask them for some of the largest buckshot they have. Or large BBs from the sporting goods store. Another idea, go to the fishing section of a store for very small shot type sinkers.
Yes, they are stainless steel now that lead has been removed from shells. It was causing lead poisoning in waterfowl. The sinkers are malleable but also don't rust.
I always prefer refilling pens whenever possible. It's so unnecessary to throw away the whole pen just because it needs a bit more ink!
I avoided posca for SO long because I thought they were a one and done. I spent more on a set of molotows because of it 😬

I am wondering what makes the Poska pen so special? I use them all the time and I like them however, if the Poska pen unique because of the paint? If you refill them, is it no longer a Posca pen but just a paint pan just a few questions for you.
It's just a nice paint pen.
Thx for answering
I had another idea, besides using a diabetic syringe with the needle part removed for filling of the posca pens. At the vets office they have plastic syringes for giving pets liquid medicines. You might could ask for a extra one to use in your craft space. Just a thought. Take care and God bless. Sincerely Becky B from Arkansas
I know exactly what you're talking about. They're a great tool to have on hand. Also, if you have kids, keep the droppers that come with children's tylenol, etc. You just never know when you're going to need a dropper.
Quick problem solving with your little funnel to get the ball bearing!
Give it a try. Once a gel pen stops working I've never got one going again
So to make the acrylic ink , I just have to mix the acrylic paint with equal or less parts of water?
Yes
you can do the same thing with other colors too? just what do we use for the other colors?
Yes. I refill all my acrylic markers that I can get the tops off
Could you dilute with pouring medium instead of water? Does the water make it crack?
It's never cracked for me
Hello there, I have a white posca paint pens/ marker and I want to refill it but all I have is craft smart white acrylic paint I w a s wondering ho ws much water I should add to thin it out? cause I heard if you water it down to much it would under bind the acrylic. So I thought I'd ask.

Are they non rusting?
Yes, they are stainless steel now that lead has been removed from shells. It was causing lead poisoning in waterfowl.
The sinkers are malleable but also don't rust.
👍
