with how many scams you've promoted, I noe unfortunately find it hard to believe in materials you advertise. Do you really care about us? Or are you an actual soulless sellout?
Jazza, you have just made my 7 year old son cry when you were doing the durability test and he absolutely broke down when he seen you burn the faces off 😭🤣
I honestly think there is no right or wrong choice. It really just boils down to preference and priorities. I'm not much of an artist “on the go”, so I usually just stick with traditional paint.
It is also important to learn differences of different types of paint. I remember one video where a street artist was disapponted about Posca paint markers because those were heavily marketed for street artists when in reality those are only good for indoor arts. But maybe the people who wanted street artist to use Posca were people who wanted tags that are very easy to remove. 😅
Paint gives more "classical painting" vibes to it. It has more texture and those unprecise overlaps on the edges creating a specific character to it. Paint pens are really precise, clean and controlled. It felt more like a digital painting/vectors on paper. Would be interesting to see their cooperation instead of fight!
I always use both- no one said you can’t do that. Paint is great for classic paintings. But whenever I want outlines or white highlights (or even a signature at the bottom of the painting) I use paint pens because they’re way more vibrant, more even lines and you can go smaller. Just use what you want and use what fits best for you in that moment. The best art, in my opinion, is when you use multiple different mediums. So go wild! Experiment! And most importantly, have fun
Acrylic paints are much cheaper, and since you can buy them in massive bottles they can last much longer than paint pens. One plastic bottle in the bin every couple of years seems better for the environment than dozens of pens (especially if they make the bottles recyclable).

I think a tie is the only way out here ^^ both have their strength and weaknesses depending on the job that needs to be done. The n64 controller came out really dope ⚡
For real! I thought the paint markers fit his cartoony style much more considering he's simply 'not a terrible painter' and a more accomplished painter could go lengths further. The Atari controllers really kicked a$$.
I can see advantages in using either. I'm personally a paint user, but not opposed to getting markers at some point. I think, with the right brushes and the right paints, you can achieve a painterly effect with depth and layers, which isn't possible to achieve with the markers. The markers are ideal for a graphic, uniform style, which works for certain applications. A lot depends on what paint you choose. Posca pens are opaque, but some of the paints you used are not. There are opaque acrylic paints out there, and there are also matte acrylics, so if you chose those, the customization challenge would be more even. One thing to take into account is also the price of the products. Posca pens are (at least where I live), pretty expensive for the amount of paint you get. Acrylic paints are more affordable, and usually come in larger tubes. If you want to take your paints on the go, you can buy a cheap portable palette or some small tubs, so you don't have to carry the big tubes. You can carry those brushes with water containers, so you don't have to carry that much water. You can also clean the brushes with wet wipes in a pinch, or carry a bottle of water and a lightweight granola bar instead of the apple. You can afford the granola bar because you didn't buy those expensive markers.
I think it's weird how he says you can't even see the paint on the controler and need tons of layers. Like, when you buy cheap poorly pigmented markers (which the market is flooded with since they became more popular) the result will also be really bad, just like cheap poorly pigmented paint. + I don't buy that these markers are super opaque, when he paints on paper you can clearly see the sketch shine through, which I don't get with acrylics (and I use cheap ones lol) brushes being unprecise is also dishonest, generations of artists painted small details just fine, suddenly you need a marker for that (like yeah I also like going the easy route and using my brush pens/gel pens for tiny details but it's not like using a brush is impossible when you stay focussed and steady), the style of the conroller paint is also completely different, he made the paint one ugly on purpose, when acrylics work really well for these graphic "blocky" kinda designs like he did with the markers. it's not like this kind of segmented style was invented with markers, no ones keeping you fom using a fat square brush and painting one area with only one color at a time I see this style all the time mainly from gouache artists. this just feels like a cheap ad for his cusomize it markers
From what I've seen of your art, paint pens win because it naturally lends itself to your artstyle in a really neat way. I'd love to see this challenge done with two people, one whose artstyle lends more toward classical painting, and Jazza, whose fun style has the pop that paint pens work so well with
I think that the two just aren't the same thing and can be used to achieve different styles. Just like how oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint all are different and are used to achieve different styles and looks, paint markers have a different look. They can be used with normal acrylic to add sharp edges or highlights or whatever it is you are using them for but separately, they are just two different things.
It really depends on what style you're going for. Paint pens are better for more comic/doodle/pop art styles, while traditional paint is better for a more, well, "painterly" style, for lack of a better term coming to mind. But in the end, it's also simply another method of application. Pens join brushes, pours, palette knives, rollers, fingers, and so on, which all help us apply paint for whatever specific reason we prefer. I think something that could be interesting is to pit paint pens against art markers. There seems to be overlap in what those two media do, as well.
Honestly speaking, the medium you use doesn't matter all that much. It's the artist that uses the medium in the best way possible and make the outcome look amazing, the artist wins! ✨️
Really, I think it comes down to what you're comfortable using, and what effects you're trying to achieve. It can be very rewarding to use them together.
Traditional painting wins every time. It just gives a better finish and you can be versatile with your style when picking up a paint brush. I've used posca pens in the past, and I feel they are very one dimesional, great for doodling, but anything that requires more detail, then they fall at the hurdle!
I enjoy the ending because you can only choose the winner based on your art style because both drawings looked really good so it’s really based off your art style to choose the better one for you🤷🏽♀️
your two final pieces really do speak to the strength of both mediums, paint has something more organic and realistic to it as reflected in your piece, and paint pens are sharper and more cartoony, both good for what they are good for, and it all depends on what you prefer
On top of that, I think paint pens are great for a first layer, for smooth coverage. With paint you can see bits of white spots because of the texture, kinda like when you use colored pencils. But paint is definitely better for ease of blending and color customization. My choice is usually paint pens for first layer coverage, paint for blending, and then back to paint pens for smaller details and highlights. They shouldn't be fighting, they should be a team!
I like how you kept calling the controllers the wrong console names on purpose 😂 Miss the Dreamcast RIP Anyway I find that after using the paint pens in your Customize It Kit to decorate the included pencil case and even my most recent custom My Little Pony...I have to say that for ease of use and setup and sharp details I love the paint pens more. But I also love the feel of acrylics on a brush, that tactile flow for me is more meditative and I can get lost in that more. It's a tie for me. Love the vid! ❤
Gotta love how Jazza relates the first sketches with the customizing items by making the fire and the lighting the background for the original character in the final masterpiece!
Hey Jazza u used to watch you about a year to two years ago, I’m happy ur still making art but I must say you don’t smile as much as you used to but still good to see you have ur goofy side.
Please gotta see you make an art piece or more using both of them!!! Maybe both characters teaming up together/making a truce and working together to create some really amazing pieces. Paint blending very well and doing some nice lighting and shading, paint pens doing cleaner smaller details and making some things more bold and pop out
paint is so much smoother and well blended, but the pens are very crisp and clean. I think they both work well, but overall I think paint is timeless and will always prevail. The paint pens work great for precise lines and pop art! Using both together is definitely the move.
I would prefer to see a Collab between the two contestants but if I have to pick one I'll pick the pens as the winner. We have seen time and time again that if the medium is easier to handle, art becomes more accessible and that leads to more creativity in the world.
I use Posca pens use a paint brush to blend the colours together After using the pen, Deb the paint with paper tissues or paper napkin & some of the colour comes off looks like water colour The pens are great for filling areas around my napkin art I do like collage and detail with the different sizes👍🏻
I saw the “posted 26 minutes ago” and thought to myself, “Oh my gosh, what is Jazza doing posting videos at this incredibly late hour!?” And then I remembered you’re in Australia up at a perfectly reasonable time while I am…very much not 😅
I absaloutley believe that original paint is so much better because it’s so much easier to blend with, and also give gradients through your painting. On the other hand, paint pens are more of a cartoony aesthetic more aimed personally for kids
I think you're right with it being a tie, in the end it kind of comes down to personal style: paint seems to create more textures and more realistic results, whereas paint pens might be better for more simplistic or cartoony type artworks.
Agreed, in the end its just personal preference that dictates this decision. If it was a truly fair fight he should have tried the paint pens in the style he did the paint in and the paint in the style he did the paint pens in
@@womble901 Sad, but true. I feel like a lot of creators have quite drastically changed their style in the last few years to suit the short attention span of most viewers and thus please the algorithm, but lost a lot of their personal uniqueness in the process :/
I am not a painter or artist myself but I enjoy art pieces with both either way. This video has proven that both, regular paint and paint pens have their own strengths and weaknesses but they don’t have to be competing over who (what) is better and maybe using both of them together in one art piece would be the solution and the answer to the question of what art supply is better. Love you Jazza ❤
i think that acrylic and pencil colors (yes, that's what i'm gonna call them) have their own place and time of usage. if you want to feel like the old masters, but with modern acrylic paint, go for the paintbrush. you want to feel like a modern artist creating an amazing artwork straight from your head while using modern tools? go for the pencil colors. really, it's all up to you.
Regular paint for the overall and pens for the final details would make for an interesting art piece. Otherwise it depends on what you're doing, what surface you're working on, where it's being done, and what your personal preference is. Use the tool for the project.
I still like paint. I like the texture. I love how easy it is to get a wide range of colors with just a few colors. Really it depends on the actual canvas. Whether it is actual canvas or something to wear.
Even if it comes off as a cheap ending I do think it's the right call, unlike the marker comparison you made these two aren't fighting for the same niche, paint offers versatility in blending, opacity, and texturing, where paint pens specialize more with the more opaque layering, popping colors, and smooth texture. You can easily see these in the final round with how different they are stylistically. it's all down to preference
I think the endong speaks for itself, like artists, they have their own streangths and styles. Want a good classic deph and mix? Classic paint. Want a comic boom pop or sharpness? Markers seem to go there. Depends on your art style and comfort, one covers the other's weaknesses, allowing for the artist to choose, just like you said. More choices, the merrier.
honestly ,i love both, they can work together so well. og paint being able to fill huuuugeeee ammounts of the paper in second, so the pens can quickly add in the finer details
Boomer Paint takes it in the speed category Markers may have "finished" with time to spare, but is it really finished? The older boxer has shadows while the younger is a flat single color everywhere.
"Xbox controller", "Nintendo Switch controller", "Dreamcast controller", pfftt... Nice. Side note, I'm really curious to try paint pens with my 6-7 year old nephews, who struggle with the blending/brush cleaning etc. that comes with regular paint.
Some great ideas for your new space: Make paper Make shoes from scratch Oil paint from tyedye powder Paintings inspired by Van Gogh Binding your own sketchbook Graffiti art Collages or cutting out magazines and gluing pictures to paper
Its truly a preference thing. Having said that, paint pens will always have my heart. They're less messy for me, less time consuming, and more fun for me. Granted, paint will always have a place in my heart for all the childhood memories.
What happened to making art as a full video? So tired of everyone reviewing the same products over and over and trying to seel us something. Where are the art videos when actual ART was being made?
I use a lot of paint markers and acrylics. I was kind of interested in others ppls opinions on this as i hate hate hate messy paints in a tube etc. there’s products in here, but I still tapped on it to see the content. Maybe ur just looking at it through jaded glasses…? I use off brand chalk paint markers and love them.
Both are great and it’s up to what the artist needs and their style. We paint a lot of 3D printed items - figures (small, medium, and large) keychains, etc. Both paint and pens come in handy and are used heavily.
You kinda forget that Jazza is a master artist because his videos are more entertaining than informative. But he really showed off his technical ability with the original paintings (perspective, foreshortening, figure drawing, lighting, etc.).
My paint and paint marker collection has become way too big over the years. Each are perfect, depending on the project you need them for. I couldn't choose between them 'cause I love them both!
paint in any form is such a versatile tool and whether you use pain pens of not valuable lessons can be learned from both. Colour theory and blending aswell as using brushes with interesting techniques make paint good where as the simplicity and control you have with paint pens lend themselves to a more iconic comic book style aswell as being able to customise curved shapes. I do think the paint pens work better with Jazza more vaguely cartoonish style though paint is useful skill all artist can learn and apply to lots of other mediums like guash, water colour and oil paints so I prefer that.
It very much depends on what you want to do with said art pieces you want to create. Personally, I love the vibrancy and clean lines the paint pens make, and I look forward to when I can get some of my own. But the blending and the realism look you can achieve through standard paints? Gorgeous in its own right.
Paint pens: graphical, cartoon, print, bold detail Paint: fine detail, detailed blending, color variety My little pony: paint pens Studio ghibli: paint Fern gully: both
The brush marks that are left behind I feel gives a painting some character whereas the paint pens are kind of flat like a comic book illustration. I think they both serve their individual purpose depending on what your final outcome is desired.
I think they're both awesome! Classical paint has that, well, classic painting look. Painterly. It's kind of wrote its own definition. The pens are awesome for crisp, bold edges that are simply incredibly difficult to achieve with a brush. I think it just depends on what you're going for, and where your personal strengths lie. Hard to pick a winner when both will make something lovely. Circumstantial to the piece really.
personally i feel like they're both winners, it just depends on what style of art you're doing/what you're doing it on. for example, i actually used both when i worked at starbucks lol. I'd use paint markers for inventory labels and acrylic paints for making cute nametags for my co-workers 😂❤
the winner is really up to personal preference, I think! Although, MY winner will always be paint pens. I've always hated working with paint, and putting it in a pen eliminates literally all the things I hate about it. Plus, I ADORE the super clean, graphic style they can give you. I recently bought some for myself (Poscas) and decided to customise the front cover of a new sketchbook. Showing my friends the finished result, someone asked if it was stickers, which is just a testament to how damn CLEAN paint pens can be!!
At this point I sometimes forget how an incredible artist you actually are, because I now watch your videos as much for the fun and creativity, good vibe and crazy concepts as for yourself, being a sunray over all the stuff, but sometimes it strikes me again how you make such nice pieces of art seemingly effortlessly !
Like @Goosey972 said there is no wrong or right choice, but in my opinion , I'd prefer piant pens because they are easier to get out if you're in a hurry and it feels easier and love your vids
this is in fact my favorite jazza video.. .. like in quite awhile, fun to watch, you get to learn something aannd have a chuckle or two, and also really really entertaining, i hope to see more videos like this soon, loved it, thanks for the great content jazza:)
Cool face off, but we all know that both have strengths, weaknesses and possibilities. Same with most creative materials, experimentation helps you find both your own particular specialisms as much as the scope of the paint/pens. I love the resulting artworks!
Honestly, paint pens had more creative merits than I expected. I'd always kind of thought of them as more utilitarian, like for writing on a presentation board or making a permanent grid on a dry erase board: sharp lines and fine details. Getting an actual masterpiece out of them that I'd expect more from digital art was really impressive.
love you brother, the decision was perfect, they cant compete with each other, and the main thing is to have fun. Art is all about having fun and when it comes to fun, you are the best and most fun to watch. Love you brother
This was a good topic. I’ve been thinking about this one for a while. It was fun to watch, and the results seem to show that if you’re going for a more illustrative crisp style, you’ll have an easier time getting there with paint pens. But if you want a more blended look, paints and brushes might be the best approach.
Personally I love the way traditional paint blend on itself and create this textures. For example in the flames, the way the paint behaves give the flames an extra level o realism. Sharp edges and control are always desirable, or course. Buy how painting interacts with itself naturally is my favorite. I get why the tie, since both are fun and one have something that the other lacks. So I think both would be perfect together. The look and fluency of painting and the control and sharpness of the markers could make a remarcable result.
I really think it just depends on the individual artist's style as to which one wins. For depth of color, blending, and a traditional oil painting look you really can't beat paint. For clean lines, bright vibrant colors, and a more graphic novel or manga looking piece paint pens take the win. I'd love to see you redo that masterpiece using a combination of both paint and paint pens on both sides of the canvas. I'd bet the final result would be incredible.
Paint pens were always going to win for me. I bought some knock off ones a couple of years ago and I'll never go back. The cleanup is easier, they use up less space in my house, I feel I have more control and the colour is more consistent
The work on those Atari joysticks was awesome man! The final piece from both fighters was my favorite though - and I think this is not a competition, the boomer and the zoomer have learned to coexist and complement each others abilities - just like real life where grandpa has money and things and possibly some life wisdom, but grandson can reach the items on the bottom shelf or the back of the cupboard! What id like to see as a follow up is a painting using BOTH mediums, and if yo want a subject then use that one - grandpa and grandson helping each other!
I think the beauty of paint is that it is like a signature for an artist, the brush strokes are so unique to old masters that you could tell them apart even if they painted the exact same thing with the exact same pallet. You don’t get that individual impression with pens. Just the history of paint wins for me

paint markers cost more than tubes of paint yes, but you need a lot more supplies than just paints if you wanna use the traditional paint@@animae008
I use Posca pens
use a paint brush to blend the colours together
After using the pen, Deb the paint with paper tissues or paper napkin & some of the colour comes off looks like water colour
The pens are great for filling areas around my napkin art I do like collage and detail with the different sizes👍🏻
Jazza is that artist which answers all of our questions.
True
They actually go pretty great together. One of my favorite paintings I've ever done is a mix of Poscas and acryla-gouache.
I personally use both mediums, in combination with each other. As has been said, it’s really personal preference❤
I think you're right with it being a tie, in the end it kind of comes down to personal style: paint seems to create more textures and more realistic results, whereas paint pens might be better for more simplistic or cartoony type artworks.
Agreed, in the end its just personal preference that dictates this decision. If it was a truly fair fight he should have tried the paint pens in the style he did the paint in and the paint in the style he did the paint pens in
I kinda miss the old days, when Jazza just sat down with his copic markers and did some random character design sessions 😅
same
Me too, but unfortunately, the algorithm doesn't miss it.
Wow love your videos so much Jazza. So amazing such a “family friendly” channel.
I still like paint. I like the texture. I love how easy it is to get a wide range of colors with just a few colors. Really it depends on the actual canvas. Whether it is actual canvas or something to wear.
What a handsome bloke! Great work as always 😄
why say bloke when you can just say guy
@@KateWood-co7jv because I’m British mate
I love how he changed the controller brand every time he brought them up
Idk, paint gives a more professional and masterful style while paint markers give me the cartoon styles I enjoy so much.
Now paint the same images but reverse the medium.
8:57 ☠️☠️☠️X box controller
As a mostly digital artist, the neatness of paint pens really appeals to me, but both kinda scare me lol. I should practice with paint more often
Bro I cant believe you called a PlayStation controller a Xbox controller
honestly ,i love both, they can work together so well. og paint being able to fill huuuugeeee ammounts of the paper in second, so the pens can quickly add in the finer details
Boomer Paint takes it in the speed category
Markers may have "finished" with time to spare, but is it really finished? The older boxer has shadows while the younger is a flat single color everywhere.
Yep agree
I'm just over here admiring all of the hard work that went into this video.
paint is waaaaaaaay cheaper per ml than paint pens
Yeah lol where was the cost test
@@kirbthebean that would make markers lose overall and he cant have that with his new product having markers 🤣🤣
@@uribove so true
This was fun! Thanks to the Patreon people, I appreciate you cause I love me some Jazza videos!
"Xbox controller", "Nintendo Switch controller", "Dreamcast controller", pfftt... Nice.
Side note, I'm really curious to try paint pens with my 6-7 year old nephews, who struggle with the blending/brush cleaning etc. that comes with regular paint.
Some great ideas for your new space:
Make paper
Make shoes from scratch
Oil paint from tyedye powder
Paintings inspired by Van Gogh
Binding your own sketchbook
Graffiti art
Collages or cutting out magazines and gluing pictures to paper
I'd love to see Jazza doing a self portrait in the style of Van Gogh!
Bro called the PlayStation controller an Xbox controller 8:55
It’s a joke. He later called it a Nintendo controller and Dreamcast controllers both of them 😂
Its truly a preference thing.
I think one thing that would have been a good comparison would be paintinb and accenting physical pieces ie. Sculptures, props, dioramas.
The issue is that they are both just such different styles, I personally prefer the paints style, yet I can see why people would like the paint pen.
Both are great and it’s up to what the artist needs and their style.
We paint a lot of 3D printed items - figures (small, medium, and large) keychains, etc. Both paint and pens come in handy and are used heavily.
Really love what you did with those Sega genesis controllers
Paint pens were PERFECT when I was restoring a vintage brand plate and the reason I knew about them was your channel. Thanks Jazza!
Paint pens: graphical, cartoon, print, bold detail
Paint: fine detail, detailed blending, color variety
My little pony: paint pens
Studio ghibli: paint
Fern gully: both
Aw, Jazza, I’m so glad you’re loving what you do! Makes it even better to watch 😊
Honestly jazza and his talent is the real winner here
The brush marks that are left behind I feel gives a painting some character whereas the paint pens are kind of flat like a comic book illustration.
I actually liked the xbox done with paint better because the wobblily lines and thinner lines in general gave me a more "lightning" feeling.
the winner is really up to personal preference, I think!
I saw this video pop up when i was at work and i
have been waiting eagerly to get home and watch it!! 🤩🥰..
Definitely a breath of fresh air, im more interested in your character design drawings than the other random art projects.
Winner... You. For loving it even more than you ever have! For making us love it too. Also, you have such a Richard Hammond voice over sound.
I actually agree with the tie, each is better at different things. Loved the last painting, it was bloody cool.
The durability test sent meeeeeeee 😂😂😂😂😂💀💀💀💀💀 Iv never seen jazza show a pinch of aggression ever that was funny ah
Now do a painting that incorporates both paints and pain pens in the same piece!
Paint pens were always going to win for me. I bought some knock off ones a couple of years ago and I'll never go back. The cleanup is easier, they use up less space in my house, I feel I have more control and the colour is more consistent
As far as the final piece goes, they're both great! I think it's more a matter of style preferences.
What id like to see as a follow up is a painting using BOTH mediums, and if yo want a subject then use that one - grandpa and grandson helping each other!
in conclusion: you're talented
I think the beauty of paint is that it is like a signature for an artist, the brush strokes are so unique to old masters that you could tell them apart even if they painted the exact same thing with the exact same pallet. You don’t get that individual impression with pens. Just the history of paint wins for me
Paint, pens....
Jazza is GOAT!😉
Both pieces 🧩 shine and the audience reaps the reward of a well spent 17:49 minutes. 😊
For me the real winner is the paint because it blends so well and the versatility of paint is just flawless
