    Thanks for the great video, as a child in the 50's my Mum & Dad used to take the steam train to visit family and stay in Westcliff-on-Sea. We traveled from Ravenscourt Park to Tower Hill by District Line and then walked to Fenchurch Steet Railway Station. All steam then and a fantastic sound, once at Westcliff we would go down to the beach and if the tide was out, dig for Cockles. A simple day out but huge memories, live in Auckland NZ now. Cheers John.

      Thank you for your comment! It must’ve been amazing with steam on the line!!!

    4:54 Back in the early days of the UndergrounD, you could travel on the District Railway from Windsor to Southend itself.
    5:20 Can't beat Fish and Chips on the seafront, especially with grotty weather and a bit of a breeze up!
    Massive portion, you say. Had a seagull snaffled most of them, because the fish looks big but there's very few chips on display‽

      6:06 Far too much time on my hands decided me to check that this is indeed footage of the Leigh-on-Sea Sailing Club, so you'd think that they know their flags.
      I'm not a salty ol' seadog but from what I've deciphered, the message in the flags on their deck roughly reads:
      Stop your vessel, my engines are astern with a man overboard.
      Yes I require a tug, I'm dropping my anchor & trawling, so keep clear.
      I'm sort of seeing a smutty drunken sense of humour reference to closing time shenanigans in there somewhere, but no matter as I enjoyed the challenge anyway.

      @@JP_TaVeryMuch That's amazing 😆 I think most of the chips were underneath the fish!

    There is also an old Southend Pier tram inside a building at Leigh-on-Sea
    (I have no idea why)
    Also
    11:46 - rare sight of the DLR works train "Kevin Keaney"

    As as change from your exotic journeys to the Orkney Isles, you were certainly on more familiar ground to me with this one - I grew up alongside the C2C line in the 1960s and 1970s and of course visited London, Leigh and Southend many many times! Its quite amazing - some things have changed beyond recognition in that time (especially in London of course), but other things seem to have been frozen in time for 50 years since I was a kid! (apart from the prices....) - especially parts of Southend! I remember the old electric (1950s vintage) Pier Trains (one in the museum) with their wood interiors and of course in those days they could run a very frequent service - and they could really reach some decent speeds on occasion! The new battery ones seem better than the horrid previous diesel ones at least! You say that Fenchurch St doesn't have a direct connection to TFL services - yes, but the walk to Tower Hill underground station from the Crosswall entrance of Fenchurch St (rather than the front entrance) is only a few hundred metres, and possibly less than the length of an Elizabeth Line platform - let alone the walk from practically any tube line to the main concourse at Kings Cross!

      Thank you for your comment, I love reading about everyone’s stories! Apparently the old electric trains used to reach 18mph compared to just 10mph with the new battery trains!

      @timbounds7190 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RorysTravels I think occasionally they'd go faster than 18mph when they had crowds to shift - it was occasionally an exciting ride! And I even remember steam trains on the C2C line, which is quite impressive given that the line was electrified when I was 3! Must have been born a trainspotter - I had a clear enough memory of seeing a steam engine pulling out of my local station that I was in later years able to identify exactly what class of loco I'd seen!
