@TFLT How well do you guys think this transmission will hold up as compared to the toyota's transmission? I've heard past Nissan's transmission would not do too well in really hot temps. Would you think adding an AT cooler will possibly fight this problem? Also, when will you do a head 2 head battle against other trucks in hott weather conditions? I think that would be great. thanks
I really don’t see what the problem is when you have a vehicle that does everything well. I would much rather have an all around vehicle than the “ best towing “ when I tow something a handful of times and it’s not going to be over 6k or the “ fastest 1/4 mile “ when I don’t race. Just give me a solid truck without a bunch of gimmicks that will break in 2 years.
I agree. That said for me the lower fuel economy on this is about all that would keep me from getting this truck. The lower tow capacity and everything else is not a deal breaker but if I want a good all rounder it may as well have good fuel economy.

I for one am exited that it has a good ol' reliable VQ!
I have a ‘22 SV model with the crew cab and 5ft bed. I’ve towed a Hyundai Elantra on a tandem axle (Uhaul) car hauler from Florida to Pennsylvania. In ever scenario, the truck surprised me. The engine braking in tow mode is surprisingly useful, it felt confident towing “heavier” weight on the highway, the acceleration was plenty to maneuver around in traffic, and the fuel consumption was expected (11mpg @60mph. 8mpg @75-80mph). When main thing higher speeds, it wanted to stay around 3,000 rpm’s to maintain speed with the heavier load. I consistently use the truck to tow a tandem axle utility trailer for a UTV, ATV, and dirt bike. Including the bed filled with extra gas, gear etc…running around 3-500lbs tongue weight depending on the load. With this tow setup (around 4,000 lbs and 300lbs in the bed) the truck is able to cruise highway speeds(60 mph) at 2,000 rpm’s, only to downshift for inclines as expected. Overall, the new frontier has really surprised me in it’s “truck stuff” capabilities. The ONLY reason I’d get a different truck is if I need interior space. The backseats get the job done, but if I’m bringing a group of adults out to go riding, they don’t have leg room. They could also drive themselves, so that’s an incident specific “red flag”. Just installed the Redarc TowPro brake controller. VERY easy to install. Plug and play harness available for new model frontiers. Excited to test it. Just wanted an extra bit of braking if I were to trailer in the snow and general peace of mind. I don’t intend to tow anything higher than the promoted tow rating of the vehicle, as equipped stock with no brake controller.

For those people who know and appreciate real trucks, this Frontier is unbeatable. It does everything very well, and is the best tow vehicle in its class. The engine is great: there is no replacement for displacement. Unfortunately for Nissan, 90% of Americans buyers are addicted to style and acceleration, and use their trucks 95% of the time as a grocery getter. So, the 'jack rabbit' turbo competitor models garner greater sales. But these competitor trucks fade quickly when towing, and doubtful will last 100k miles without major repairs. To capture some of this group, Nissan should not have cut a few corners. The Frontier should have standard: no hard plastics anywhere in the cab, but especially none around knees and elbows; auto adjusting headlight beams; telescoping steering column; integrated brake controller; a larger info screen with higher resolution. Or at least give some of these as options. I hope Nissan will include these items in future years. Lastly, increased payload and towing numbers will also attract more buyers. Maybe the Frontier should have 3 models: base, light, turbo 4cyl, quick, few frills; the Pro4X; and a new HD 4x4 model with increased payload and towing numbers. ?

The Frontier, like every other truck, has it's limits, it can't do EVERYTHING. If the towed weight is going to be higher, then get a different truck, wouldn't you say?
Surge brakes are not "On or Off". The braking force is proportional to the forward load on the hitch. Stop harder, the trailer moves forward on the activiation linkage farther and compresses the master cylinder on the trailer brakes farther. The harder you stop, the greater the braking force from the trailer brakes.
I’m glad someone else knew this! They are not on all the time going down hill. Every trailered boat in America would have burnt up trailer breaks if that were true. I trailer a boat up and down a mountain twice a week all year. Brakes are still perfect.

@10:54 You can see the white lane line through the corner of the bed/tailgate junction on the passenger side of the truck. Is that normal? Quality control issue? I've never noticed that on other trucks.
Actually I think it’s pretty normal. Just noticed the same thing myself recently, then noticed it on most trucks everywhere. Makes sense, really doesn’t need a tight tolerance there.
@@inyourfaceqcface6468 Cant wait to replace your 2010? Huh im actually the opposite. Ive got a 2008 SE 4X4 crew cab long bed with 356,000 miles on it and was planning on driving it at least another 200 thou but sadly someone ran into the side of me and their insurance company totaled my truck out. Luckily my truck really only had cosmetic damage on the entire passenger side and is still fully mechanically sound so I bought it back from the insurance and they cut me a $4600 check for the difference between its totaled estimated value of $6800 and the buy back price of $2200. I am sad though as I love my Frontier and want to be whole again but its probably not worth fixing the damage at this point so Im going to have to look for a new truck for business uses. Im thinking I might actually just get a low mileage 2019 similarly spec'd to my current truck as its been such a Great truck imo. And thats coming from a guy thats previous truck was a 1st gen 2001 Tundra limited 4X4 access cab which was also a great truck but imo my Frontiers been a more reliable, powerful, useful, and fuel efficient truck. The old Tundra was a better looking truck imo though but the Frontys looks have grown on me.
You said 5600 pounds but is that the dry or wet weight? I have a boat with dry weight of 5200 but with fuel / water probably reach 5700. Not including the trailer. I see the 4X4 on crew cab is only 6400 tow capacity while the king cab has the 6700.
great video as usual Roman/Andre , the new Frontier is a very good truck Hyd steering and no stop/start is blessing in its own way, and the Frontier has always had better front seats and seating position than a Tacoma and better economy also, a good all rounder that here in Canada pricing is right near 5k less than a Tacoma and don't forget we have 2 taxes we pay in most provinces when buying a new vehicle , Nissan has done a really great job on this Frontier and do make some nicely styled cars and hope they will put some new transmission tech, DUMP THE CVT'S , now we just need the global vehicle industry to get microchips!! 👍

I wont be towing but I knew the price embargo was up today and I wanted to get it from the best channel for truck reviews, even though everyone is putting out a video on Frontier today.
In South Africa you basically never see electronic brakes on trailers - all of them, even the biggest "caravans" as we call them use the mechanical surge brakes.
Nice video !! At 4:05 the tailgate seems poorly adjusted on the passenger side .. we can see the road through it... is it an adjustement or a faulty tailgate, thanks ?
@@alexmills1329 it used to be available on the Previous Frontier and both the Tacoma and Colorado offer it. It could make a comeback, 5ft bed is on the short side for some people
Towing capacity is definitely not what we’re looking for in this category. 5,000 is plenty. Basically some decent capability reliability on and off road performance with decent fuel efficiency. The monster trucks/ full size being made today are just about unusable. I’m 6ft and can’t even reach over the sides to get stuff from the bed anymore. Not to mention the out of this world pricing.
It would have lasted too long. They can't sell that to us 😅 remember the old vw diesel cars that were too reliable and VW lost money so they had to make it less reliable
Nissan is a few standard features away of satisfying the critics. Adjustable trailer brake control ( can be put in), locking differential on all trims and storage bins in the floor. They definitely stepped up to the plate. See what is available in the next couple of years. A V6 accelerating uphill with a 5000 lb plus boat, that’s impressive. They didn’t include the actual trailer weight. So, the 3.8 maybe underrated…hmmmm..
Ram and Ford trucks include the full tank of fuel + a 150lb driver in the cargo capacity ratings. I wonder if Nissan does, too; might help (or hurt) with the CC number when compared to other mid-size.
'If' I were in the market for a new small-mid sized truck, I'd give this newly designed Frontier a shot. Kind of an odd statement coming from a major Toyota fan. By the way, which watch are you sporting that tells you your altitude?
I may have missed it but did Nissan provide a starting price point on the Pro X 2WD version? The Pro 4X starts at $37K and clearly will go up from there. I just don't have a need for 4WD here in FL.
@M D Thanks, if I compare the 4WD version cost, granted I don't need it which is $44K for a Frontier, the new Tundra Limited is allegedly going to start in the mid $40K range. Even comparing the ProX to the Tundra of you're one to hold to a truck for a while, $10K or so is not that big of a difference BUT there IS a massive difference between the two trucks.
I just bought a new Frontier. I need to tow with it. How can I get a 7 pin, hitch and brake controller? The dealer said everything was on back order. Worked in my favor that the dealer took another $1000 off the price.
Surge brakes are not on or off. By their very design they will always provide proportional braking, no more or less that needed to handle whatever the weight of the trailer, loaded or empty.
I put a whole skid steer on a trailer that weighed around 9 or 10k pounds on my 2015 Tacoma it was squatting a bit but at least it pulled it all the way back to my home
The one thing I haven't heard about this truck compared to the previous generation is the turn radius. My gosh. The Titan had a smaller turn radius than the previous generation of Frontier. It takes the whole parking lot to turn my 2017 Crew cab long bed around. That's the only complaint I really have about that machine. I can live with it. Love the look of the new models though.
5k+ RPM under full load for a extended time! Exhaust valves won't like that as those multiport intakes tend to burn out valves even when your gentile on them.
Hmmmm....Chevy Colorado or Nissan Frontier. I was kind of looking at the diesel Colorado used. But for a little more I can get a new Frontier. I guess it depends on whether they bring out the 4x4 SV double cab long bed. If they do (by November) then this will be on my shortlist. If not...then it's the double cab, long bed, diesel, 4x4 colorado for me
If you read the blogs on the last generation Frontier there are quite a few reliability issues reported. Hopefully Nissan has addressed the issues. Toyota is the class leader for a reason. It’s very difficult to break them!
I prefer hydraulic surge brakes over electric brakes with a controller. BTW guys surge brakes are not binary, I don't know why you think that or why that would even be safe but they're not. think of it like pushing the brake peddle in your car, how hard you push on them determines how much they grab. it's the same thing for surge brakes, trailer momentum pushes against the hitch and that is essentially the brake peddle for the trailer. the harder you slam on your brakes the harder the trailer is going to push against the hitch which will force the trailer to brake harder as well.
I think the lack of a built in brake controller on a truck is a huge letdown. That’s the problem with Nissan, always something rather than doing it right the first time no not taking shortcuts. Do it right the first time and they wouldn’t be criticized. I would really like to see them fix this and also add a turbo optioned V6 as well as the Titan V8 with a turbo as well.
I must add with my 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, and while towing my 26’ travel trailer, at a Cat Scale certified CGVW of 10,250 lbs. I have never needed to “floor the gas pedal” on any road or grade, to be able to maintain legal speed limits! Without the Tow/Haul mode on going up hills, I do however use it going down, to take advantage of grade braking, same thing goes with the cruise control, I find if I feather the gas pedal just enough to maintain speed, without downshifting.
This new frontier is a tacoma competitor but the bumper on the Nissan seems a bit lower than the tacoma bumper wonder what the approach angles and ground clearance is maybe a vid with that info. Maybe make a comparison with jeep gladiator, nissan frontier, tacoma all three new models.

I guess the old days of getting a Frontier that has a sticker price of $30,000 and picking it up for $21,000 is out of the question.
Think so... I have been looking at titan pro4x,, my local dealership has a 6000$ dealer mark up. Been watching alot of titan videos, reading alot of comments,, everyone was getting huge discounts.
@@chriscall3425 Last year around the fall they couldn't hardly sell the damn things.
The pandemic gave them all an excuse to skyrocket their prices to stupid levels. Even moreso than before.
It tows that boat pretty well at 5600 lbs empty. But add fuel, toys, and people and you will be at or above your tow rating.
The Frontier, like every other truck, has it's limits, it can't do EVERYTHING. If the towed weight is going to be higher, then get a different truck, wouldn't you say?
Yeah, and especially payload capacity.
No eng stop start! That's a good thing in my book.
A mini Ike gauntlet? You mean the “Tyke” gauntlet!
Aye that's actually a good name👍🏽
Lol Tyke Gauntlet. I like that.
That looks like over by Jordanelle res is Utah over by the Rockcliff area. That’s a steep climb, but not very long. Impressive truck.
I love the new Frontier and I love that you’re doing this test in the Heber Valley area u by Jordanelle Reservoir, but you guys missed an opportunity to head south on highway 40 up the grade to Daniels Summit and over to Strawberry Reservoir. Long , 7%+ grade for quite a few miles.
Anyway, awesome review.
At this point I'm convinced that any manufacturer that isn't willing to give you guys press cars they gotta be hiding something
They're certainly being very apprehensive about putting the pricing out there.
Makes sense, really doesn’t need a tight tolerance there.
love that sound, cant wait to replace my old 2010 pro4x.
My daughter has a 2010 and it has been excellent. It has about 80,000 miles and The only thing she has done is replace the battery.
My wife just bought a 2020 brand new
Got about 280 000 and only thing i replaced is abs rear sensor 🤘🏻
@@duncdunc76 yup but i have a king cab and kids now i need a crew cab and i love the new engine 3.8 direct injection
Wish y’all took it over parleys canyon. It’s a pretty challenging hill climb on I-80.
Would be nice to have Pro4 with 6ft box for us guys that actually haul stuff.
Canada gets the king cab pro4x pretty stupid on Nissan to not give the us that version it would sell not everyone wants a crew cab
I'd much rather have hydraulic power steering than electric. Good for Nissan.
You said 5600 pounds but is that the dry or wet weight? I have a boat with dry weight of 5200 but with fuel / water probably reach 5700. Not including the trailer. I see the 4X4 on crew cab is only 6400 tow capacity while the king cab has the 6700.
Looks solid. I know those roads well and towing a boat that size up those roads that well is legit.
great video as usual Roman/Andre , the new Frontier is a very good truck Hyd steering and no stop/start is blessing in its own way, and the Frontier has always had better front seats and seating position than a Tacoma and better economy also, a good all rounder that here in Canada pricing is right near 5k less than a Tacoma and don't forget we have 2 taxes we pay in most provinces when buying a new vehicle , Nissan has done a really great job on this Frontier and do make some nicely styled cars and hope they will put some new transmission tech, DUMP THE CVT'S , now we just need the global vehicle industry to get microchips!! 👍
I work at a Kia dealership with a Nissan sister dealership. I’m heartbroken that I have to wait 90 days after release to buy this thing with my discount lol
lol I here you I work at a Nissan dealership I can’t wait to get my hands on my own
Thanks for another great video, I have the 2020 sv midnight edition 4x4 and love it
Glad you enjoyed towing in my neck of the woods. There are some pretty long and steep climbs but nothing like the Ike. I'm really looking forward to putting the Frontier through its paces!
Nice solid truck with no silly tech. Should be a solid choice.
Man, this truck is good looking, it looks like a PATROL
Nice video !! At 4:05 the tailgate seems poorly adjusted on the passenger side .. we can see the road through it... is it an adjustement or a faulty tailgate, thanks ?
Great option for the truck market.
My sister has a 2002 Xterra SE with the supercharged v-6. Damn is that a solid vehicle. She still loves it.
Nissan frontier pro4x need nissan gtr nismo engine in it and borla 3" exhaust system with hankook tyres 305/65 R18
Time for a new pair of sunglasses Roman... That ship has sailed 😎
why get a new pair if the old ones still work? one of the many reasons poor stay poor.
@@lefttea Pumping money into the economy helps everyone.
So you are still driving your very first car/truck ??
When the crew cab long bed is out I’m getting one.
That’s a full size truck thing
@@alexmills1329 it used to be available on the Previous Frontier and both the Tacoma and Colorado offer it.
It could make a comeback, 5ft bed is on the short side for some people
@@engineer_alv when I say long bed I mean a full 8 feet not 6 foot 4 inches or so
@@alexmills1329 yes I know but there's no such thing as a 8ft bed on a midsized truck so 6ft is considered the longest you can get on a Crew Cab
Sounds great for a V6! Really on the brake controller its a midsize truck!
TFL boat please! That AXIS is one nice rig, the frontier ain't too bad either
Remember when they toyed with the idea of throwing in the 2.8 cummins with an 8 speed auto? Pepperidge farm remembers.
It would have lasted too long. They can't sell that to us 😅 remember the old vw diesel cars that were too reliable and VW lost money so they had to make it less reliable
I kinda miss the days when Andre was the kayfabe Russian mechanic.
@M D much appreciated.
The new IGauntlet .... Midway to Kamas Utah.... went right past my home. Can I come say hi? I'll take you surfing on that lake if you want.
Awesome video! Nissan knows how to build a proper truck compared to the main competition Toyota.
Yeah but its all about the sales and nissan is wayyyy behind.
@@beexiong2995 sales does not equal quality

Towing package? Transmission cooler?
What's up with the visible gaps between the bed sides and tailgate? You can see the road from the rear facing camera angle pointed back at the boat.
I just bought a new Frontier. I need to tow with it. How can I get a 7 pin, hitch and brake controller? The dealer said everything was on back order. Worked in my favor that the dealer took another $1000 off the price.
Good review & great truck.
Surge brakes are not on or off. By their very design they will always provide proportional braking, no more or less that needed to handle whatever the weight of the trailer, loaded or empty.
All the hate will come from people who mostly haven’t owned a frontier lol
I put a whole skid steer on a trailer that weighed around 9 or 10k pounds on my 2015 Tacoma it was squatting a bit but at least it pulled it all the way back to my home
That's just stupid nevermind extremely dangerous to everybody around you.
lol start/stop is just another thing that can break. kinda glad nissan is still building a someone basic truck.
Hallelujah!
It’s the same as before.
@@TFLtruck Well the new Frontier gets one down vote from me for that. LOL
@@matbasterson2128 time to titan swap.
Ive never understood why. My 13 xterra turns much tighter than the same frontier. Makes no sense
5k+ RPM under full load for a extended time! Exhaust valves won't like that as those multiport intakes tend to burn out valves even when your gentile on them.
I've redlined almost every gear on my 2013 4.0l for the last 262,000 miles.
Seems fine.
Great video. Proud of you Roman 😅. Great as always andre let's see if you guys can get the tan Interior. Not one person has a good video!
If not...then it's the double cab, long bed, diesel, 4x4 colorado for me
Can't sleep perfect video
Really like it from a tacoma owner, but my next midsize truck will be a hybrid or electric for sure, i will keep my tacoma till then
nissan has always been a "what do you need?" company not the one giving you everything you ask for and charging you triple company,
Come to Pennsylvania or West Virginia. They have longer hills and much steeper.
idk, some of those Colorado mountains are brutal; very steep, long, winds like crazy...
Can you do a 0 to 60 video of it next.
Limited options on SV must buy Pro package on Four wheel drive models to order the right Truck for me!
These prices are getting crazy for a midsize truck
Hey Andre! Are those wheels going to be standard on pro 4x? I noticed they’re different than the original prototype that was released. Thanks.
I tow this hill several times a year, every year. It is a pull, while not being too long. 😎
I hope they let Andre talk more 🙏
I think the lack of a built in brake controller on a truck is a huge letdown.
To answer the question in the title...I hope so? Otherwise, what did the Nissan engineers do for the last design cycle?
Greatful for this comment 👏 👌 👍 🙌
This new frontier is a tacoma competitor but the bumper on the Nissan seems a bit lower than the tacoma bumper wonder what the approach angles and ground clearance is maybe a vid with that info. Maybe make a comparison with jeep gladiator, nissan frontier, tacoma all three new models.
I wanted a crew cab long bed frontier then I heard there was no start/stop. Now I really want a crew cab/long bed frontier.
