    Man, I am sitting here with tears streaming down my cheeks, watching an immortal genius with his lone instrument, holding his own with a hundred highly trained symphony musicians armed with sheet music and stands, and not one of them could touch him if they tried, nor even all of them together. Nothing and nobody can hold a candle to the immortal Glen Campbell.

      No disrespect to the symphony musicians, this song would be shallow and incomplete without them. But to me, Glen's talent is equal to the entire lot of the symphony orchestra and makes this piece so incredibly more than special.

      @padcommissioner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +163

      No disrespect may be intended but the statement "Glen's talent is equal to the entire lot of the symphony orchestra and makes this piece so incredibly more than special." is nonsense. There are maybe 70 people backing Glen up. Many of them have decades of training and experience playing their instruments. To say Glen has more talent than all these people combined is hyperbole. Understand that you love Glen's performance more than the symphony's but the comment was not credible as well as disrespectful ---again.

      Absolutely, Eric. In an online conversation with a relative of Glen, I shared my long held suspicion that the "suits" of Nashville were never terribly interested in marketing his guitar skills. As with many artists, they focused instead on his vocal talent, which, for them, was (and still is) the medium that sells the record. What a terrible slap in the face of discerning fans. But that's how it works in today's "pop" country culture.

    • @clips001ify
      @clips001ify 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@johnpastirchak1053 interesting point - that marketing him as the wonderful singer he was made him more accessible. It should be emphasized, though, as you probably are aware, Glen Campbell was a highly sought-after studio musician prior to the singing career. A musician's musician in the LA scene. Today, possibly, he could have more easily sold himself as guitarist-singer (not that today's music is of the highest quality). Could have crossed over genres more.

      Add me to the list. I recognized the subtle, understated genius in such classics like "Wichita Lineman" even as a child, right to "Southern Nights" but like most, never knew he could not even read music, but was one of the fabled "Wrecking Crew" studio musicians.
      The small cadre of professional musicians amongst professional musicians, the ones you call when you want perfect execution right out of the gate. Quite frankly, most if not all of his commercial music was not a full expose' of his immense talent.
      It's like an old college friend that got to be backstage during a RUSH concert and got to see Neil Pert do his warm up routine. He said that he was blown away, listening to this genius level musician let loose like he would never play during a concert with the prescribed list of recorded songs they were performing live for the fans.

    When I was growing up in British Columbia, Canada in the sixties and seventies, Glen Campbell's music was everywhere. It seems every home of every friend or relative had a few of his albums. Wichita Lineman, Gentle on my Mind, these were kind words and uplifting sounds during a time of terrible strife in the world. He was in a class of his own.

    Campbell did a summer replacement show for The Smothers Brothers. It was so well received he got his own show for three years. How many people realise that Glen couldnt read music ? He heard music and ingested it, then played it perfectly and that was the mark of his real genius. The man also had a particular grace about him, his natural humility and easy going personality enabled others to warm to him in any setting. To witness him operate a 12 string Guitar with a surgeons finesse was a marvel never to be forgotten.

    Country music has had a number of superb guitarists over the years. From Chet Atkins to Roy Clark the masters abound in country. But Campbell's mastery was unique in his ability to play in front of any audience, regardless the genre and sound as if he owned the music. From playing classical music with a full orchestra to picking and grinning with the guys at the saturday night hoedown Glen was as at home as one could be. Country called him our own, but he was as masterful with Beethoven as he was bluegrass. We'll not see his like again.

    I miss Glen to the core of my soul. He always shared his musical gifts and talent with us, with the greatest of joy and giving that any human could muster. Rest In Peace my dear friend Glen. Clearly, this is one of the most wonderful demonstrations of Glen's resounding guitar genius, and with one of the finest Philharmonic Orchestras in our great nation, the South Dakota Symphony. Yes, in this great rendition of Mason William's magnificent song; "Classical Gas", just listening to the power leaves anyone positively transformed. I wish I had the opportunity to have been present that night in Sioux Falls in 2001. Imagine, if you will, such musical beauty, and it is so difficult to believe it was the same year as the tragedy of 911. Glen was one of the bravest men I know. I listened carefully to the words of his lovely daughter Ashley, as she described how she and her brothers guided her dear father while he performed his magic on stage, well into his battle with Alzheimer's Disease. One day medical science will conquer that horrible disease, Alzheimer's, and Glen's suffering will not have been in vain. I have lost a family member to it. Another great gift of Glen's was his bravery in showing the world how to stand tall in the face of a terrible illness, and to do so with the greatest of dignity. Mr. Campbell, I salute you, as you look down upon us all, be safe my friend, on the Wichita Line. Thank you Sir, play and serenade all those who rest peacefully in heaven.

    Mr. Campbell grew up with humble beginnings in a little Arkansas town..... His family didn't have much else besides music and Glen learned early how to pick a guitar and pour his heart out on his instrument.
    Glen was good friends with Alice Cooper, and when the two of them lived in the L.A. area they regularly got together to play golf.
    Alice told the story of having been talking with Eddie Van Halen who was widely accepted to be "the best guitarist in rock and roll", but when Alice mentioned being friends with Glen, Eddie asked Alice if he could talk Glen into giving Eddie a guitar lesson.
    America was given a great gift in Glen Campbell. Glen playing Classical Gas with an orchestra, standing out like he did then and still does in video...... is just a great treat to hear.
