Often referred to as the 6th Beach Boy, member of the Wrecking Crew (the ultimate studio sessions back up band for damn near all 60s bands of note.....)
The reason he was so accomplished as a guitar player is because he was true to himself. Alot of rockers wanted to be " rock and roll stars".
Glenn Campbell endeavored to be an accomplished musician. He was about the music, not the fleeting fame and fortune of the music industry.

My wife and I saw Glen in Marksville, La. at the start of his farewell tour. I was struck by the fact that, despite numerous mid song pauses when he forgot lyrics, his guitar playing was flawless. I understand that until his death, he never lost his picking skills. His band that night included his daughter. When his memory failed he looked at his daughter and she came to his mike and sang the words until he picked the lyrics back up. It was by far my most emotional concert experience!

Alice Cooper had become one of Glenn's closest friends and golfing buddies. He made a eulogy video which was very touching. And in it he told of the time when Eddie Van Halen asked Alice to ask Glenn if he could have a guitar lesson. Your description of the tapping during a concert might not have been such a surprise.

Glenn Campbell is the reason I play guitar to this day. Glenn and Roy Clark were two master class players but it was Glenn just playing and singing with the acoustic guitar that made me say hell yeah I want to do that.
He could without a doubt play any style of music. I believe rock would have been easier to play than most of what Glenn played. He is a legend and will always be my inspiration to play.

I was at the Arizona State Fair in 1966 where Glen was performing with his band. While playing a song one of his guitar strings broke. The audience gasped. The band stopped playing. He stopped playing, looked at the sky for about 4 seconds, turned to his band members and said, "Key of ..." and they continued playing in harmony in spite of his broken spring. We gave them a standing ovation.

One of my heroes. The first record I ever bought was a 45 of "Witchita Lineman", with pocket money I saved up picking up empty soda bottles on my way walking back and forth to our local town center. I was 7 years old and was mesmerized and fascinated by the beauty and melancholy sound of WL coming out of the radio. Then Gentle On My Mind, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, True Grit, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, Southern Nights and Rhinestone Cowboy. This was a rather guilty, secret pleasure as all of my friends were listening to The Beatles, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Allman Brothers and Skynyrd. I finally got to see him live in concert at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth in 1983. I stood right down in front, as close as I could get (which was practically face to face). One of the unforgettable live music moments of my life and I actually got to shake his hand and say hello after the show. Something about his humble, aw shucks, "watch this " personality was so endearing to me, not to mention his legendary status and reputation as one of greatest performers of our era. I still listen to Witchita Lineman at least once a week and it still moves me everytime, just like the seven year old kid that bought that record so long ago.

To me, Glenn was first and foremost a guitarist. He happened to be a great singer, and he maintained his fantastic vocal range even in his seniorhood, something most aging singers only with they could do. But his singing was the icing on the cake. One of my favorite lines is when Glen, referring to his fellow Guitar Wizard and friend, starts into a rousing performance saying: "Roy Clark and I have a pact, I do not play Malaguena, and he don't play the William Tell Overture!"
I imagine he played that overture a thousand times on guitars ranging from solo acoustic, to his favored 12 string electric Hamer in front of full orchestras. Sometimes he lets the brass play the intro lines and other times he lights it off himself on the guitar. But when he plays the final chorus with the guitar on the top of his head, you cannot help but be amazed! (and don't miss the hundred notes he his in the 3 seconds of the outro!!)
RIP to one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

He was so talented and versatile. You are right, his guitar playing was phenomenal, as well as Roy Clark's. I'm a classic rock and roll fan, but I love many genres because of Glenn Campbell. Rest in Peace, Glenn.

Mid '60s and Dad brought home records he received as mgr of the local TV station. A favorite I still play is "Twelve String Guitar" by "The Folkswingers". There is no reference to Glen as the featured player except lost in a paragraph on the back of the jacket. Awesome stuff. I wonder if I might be allowed me to post tracks from it on my channel.
(I heard that Roger Miller also couldn't read sheet music. Neither needed to.
A story I heard: Glen was on a plane and and after some ice was broken a flight attendant asked him to listen to a cassette of her boyfriend. He politely accepted and Alan Jackson is now familiar.

Glen Campbell is the greatest singer/guitarist ever recorded. This man was simply on a whole higher level. That's as simple as I can put it. He absolutely should be in the rock Hall of Fame no questions asked.

Glen was generous to others in many ways. The late Johnny Burnette became acquainted with Glen in his early days and encouraged him to move to L.A. to better promote his talents. After Johnny's untimely death in 1964, Glen eventually hired Johnny's widow, Thurley, as a business manager. I talked to her in 1988 for a good half hour via phone while she was at Glen L.A. office. Also, Glen gave a benefit concert to Johnny's brother, Dorsey, when he died in 1979. Additionally, Glen gave some assistance to Johnny's son, Rocky Burnette, during his initial professional efforts. RIP Glen, Johnny, Dorsey and Thurley.

I had the pleasure of hearing Glen live in Dublin Ireland in the early 70s. At one poing half way through a tune he walked off stage and came back a few seconds later playing the bagpipes. I loved his singing and he could do anything on guitar.

Glen Campbell was one of the best. I was a kid when he was big and he was all over the radio. How lucky I am. I knew that was Leon Russell cause he was my first intro to music when I was 4.

Yes Glen Campbell was no doubt in the top two best Guitarist ever to strap on a Guitar. He was so natural at it like it was a part of his body and soul. I was to young to appreciate his talent, but I’m so glad we had him as part of our music culture. God bless him and I’m sure that is who he is with. He was put on this earth for just that to give us all music pleasure. Thank you Glen.

Glen laid down a rhythm track, then played superbly tasteful lead support and excellent solos on the LP "Tennessee Ernie Sings and Glen Picks."
I learned so much from that LP , especially how Glen used the "Caged" system to add phrases over the entire neck. You should check it out if you love
    guitar !

I loved his voice from the moment I first heard it. As a professional singer/guitarist from the 60`s through the 70`s I got to cover many of his & Jimmy Webb hit songs. My all time favourites are; By the time I get to Phoenix, Gentle on my mind and Wichita Linesman. I watched the TV docco of his farewell tour and shed a few tears to think of the musical wonder he created. I`m sure I`m not alone in saying that Glen will always be " Gentle on my mind."

A funny comment I read recently was, a fan had his 6 favorite rock band drummers from some groups of the 1960’s. Until he saw the Wrecking Crew video, and discovered his 6 favorite drummers, were all the same person, Hal Blaine.
