The history of Algeria (and the rest of the Maghreb) is very complex and interesting. Before the Roman invasion, there were a significant presence of Phenicians (Arab Cananites) who blended with the Berber natives. With the Roman invasion, Christianity arrived in the region. However, the people were adept of the Donatist movement which was unitarian in nature and rejected the trinity that was practiced by the Roman elites. Then came the Vandales, a northern European people who adopted Arianism (a monotheistic form of Christianity). The Vandals invaded north africa to establish their monotheistic faith and get rid of the trinitarian dogma. This explains why the indigenous people embraced wholeheartedly Islam after an initial short term resistance.

Berber Tribes (Amazigh)Context: The Berbers, also known as Amazigh, were the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa and were organized into tribes. Before the arrival of the Arabs, these tribes had their own political and cultural systems.Resistance: The Berber tribes mounted significant resistance against the Arab invasion, defending their territory and customs. The resistance varied from region to region, and some tribes resisted more than others. These tribes were not united under a single leadership, which complicated their resistance efforts.
