In the fourteenth century, traders from Arabia, Gujarat and China arrived in what is now Indonesia, seeking cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. They brought with them Islam, and as some settled on Java and Sumatra, the new religion gradually blended with local culture. Jump forward seven centuries, and Indonesia is now the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation in the world. Islam spread like a beacon, carried from island to island. Each time the inhabitants of an island accepted Islam, they themselves became the standard bearers of the new faith and worked hard to give da’wah to others.

Masyaallah, alhamdulillah i am from Malaysia a multi cultural country and this is a story about my ancestors. Yes it is true and that is my roots. I am a Malay born Sunni Muslim but i have a mix blood of malay, indian and arab. More then 65% of Malaysian population is Muslim and all Malays are muslim plus we have other races who are also muslim.
Islam came in 3 phases to archipelago what is now known as Indonesia but back then as Nusantara
The 1st was already in the 7th centrury right after the death of the Prophet SAW until the 9th.
The 2nd phase was from the 10th until the 15th centrury this is well known era of the Wali Songo on the Island of Jawa it was after the fall of Baghdad in 1258 that big Ulamas and sheikhs started to go to Nusantara.
and the last and final phase was from the 16th to 19th
Almost all of the Sultanates throughout Nusantara where all descendants of the Prophet SAW through the lineages of the Sayyids and Sharifs
The Islamic religion in Indonesia was build by descendants of the Prophet Muhammad who married with the Majapahit, Pajajaran and Aceh royal families. These descendants then founded the Sultanates of Samudra Pasai, Demak, Cirebon, Banten and Malays. And with the Walisongo's help, they spread Islam throughout Indonesia.
These descendants also became Indonesian leaders during the Dutch colonial period, Japanese colonialism, beginning of independence, and in the modern era.
Currently they are president, generals, governors and mayors. They also founded Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah which are the largest Islamic organizations in the world.
Unity in diversity; bali, lombok n flores. Three islands in one row, but different relegions majority.

because most of the commoners faith in Indonesia was Kapitayan, a primordial monotheistic religion dated way back before the judaism itself, or you can call it a 'pre-prophet Mohammed Islam'.
Islam came to Indonesia starting from Aceh (Serambi Mekah), then through Malacca, then Java Island and Borneo and Sulu (Philippines)
Actually, if you look at the evidence in the form of the value system and worldview of Javanese and Malay people, those who spread Islam in Indonesia were not traders, but Sufi scholars and Mursyid Tariqah.
The one that accelerated it was the persecuting of ulemas by the dutch. They either being sent to isolated places or outright sent to another colony like south africa or the ulemas flee to more remote region like the jungle or the mountain region. Thats why, even buddist matriarchy society like minang kabau are became 2nd indonesia most religius ethnic behind aceh darussalam province.

They say nusantara (indonesia past name before) was hindus majority before islam came, but actually the hindus and buddha only reach to their kings and royals family, the people is animism majority, then islam come first to their people before to their kings

I am Muslim from South Sumatra. I agree what this explanation. As Evidence, in my place, Palembang there are more descendants of Arab then descendants of indian. In Palembang, there is a location where descendats of Arab live which is called by "Kampung Arab" or "Arab Village. Most of them are merchant and entrepreneur.
Islam di indonesia bukan hasil pemaksaan dan datang jaman khalifah/sahabat rasullullah masih hidup.harus tafsirkan buku sejarah babad tanah jawa dimana silaturahmi dan izin kerajaan non islam.lalu pindah nya hindu ke bali karena tidak mau masuk islam dan ingin mandiri dari kerajaan di jawa.kelemahan nya masih banyak bercampur mistik dan kepercayaan lokal yang bertentangan dengn ajaran islam serta kadang fatwa ulama nya tidak mengikuti/konsultasi ke ulama global/internasional
Kami menyukai islam karena tidak ada kasta/tingkatan msyarakat seperti agama terdahulu

The Yemeni Arabs travelled from Indian Sea to Aceh and also Pattani (Thailand) then through Malacca Straits to Malacca.. they trade their merchandise for spices in Malacca, The Chinese also trade at the same place.. The Yemeni Arabs shows an impressive trading market with decent behavior which impressed the Malacca Sultan.. Once the Sultan became a Muslim, all of his Malay people required to be Muslim.. In Malacca (International trading Zone during that time), you can see even a Chinese inherit their local Masjid Culture with Islamic religion, they were also married with the Malay Locals until today which we can look into right now..
