All the major mix engineers that say they are mixing in the box are still most likely recording vocals through a $2,000 to 4,000 interface, $5,000 preamp and a $4,000 compressor, along with a $3,000 to 40,000 microphone, and sending there mix off to a mastering engineer using analog gear.
I’m on logic and mainly record my own vocals with a little beat making here and there. I say all that to say if I were to ever switch daws or took time to learn another studio one is my first choice. I love the workflow it has for vocal recordings
10:43 The reason why you see one CPU core maxed out and the others not being used as much, is because all DAWs use one core to processes everything on a track. So if you have a lot of plugins on one track, or a very intensive plugin running, you will have audio glitches. Also with Apple Silicon Macs, DAWs don't use the efficiency cores on the CPU for some reason.
Studio One ✅ OAN: I would say I found a middle ground with a d-box+ a pair of pultec style EQ and a warm audio bus comp for mixing. On the recording side I have a HA1073EQ->HA Tubesessor (cl1b clone) -> 76 style compressor and it’s made my recordings on another level. Everything else is in the box.
I love this topic at 12:00 because I have a 24-core threadripper and sometimes see the very final core is being utilized at maximum capacity whilst other cores are barely in use. Wish there was a better way to distribute the workflow to individual cores.
The part about making sure your new computer is up to date before getting back to work is good advice. I recently got a new Mac and transferred everything over but I didn't do that until my latest single was finished and released before I did because I didn't want any issues preventing me from getting that out. But overall the process was pretty smooth. I just had to reactivate some licenses and authorize a lot of my plugins.
Analog gear still has value and even more so now that tons of music is sounding the same. However plugins are getting more and more advanced. Love the podcast def my favorite
This may sound off but I plan on Adding a LA2A & a 1176 to my tracking chain for recording only. I plan to continue using CLA-76 and CLA2A in my mixing chain jus incase I leave the studio and go to another I'll still have my sessions being able to be pulled up or if I go out of town nd have to mix a album or a song without my outboard gear
How I understand the cpu issue is that audio is always a single core process so it runs off one core but when you use busses and sends and have parallel effects is when other cores will pick up some of the processing... Its got a lot to do with routing...
certain cores are designated to processing certain kinds of data, for instance your video data may be processed by core 1 while you're audio processing is run by core 2. This is done to maintain stability on the hardware end, mac os may be limiting core usage to certain process's . Some cores are dedicated for os operations, fan and heat sink operations etc.
Good episode! Btw, to print autotune on the vocal track in ProTools all you have to do is route the vocal in through an aux track with the plug-ins on it and out to an audio track. I'm surprised Devvon didn't know this. And in FL studio you just print to Edison and then bring the wav file back into the mixer 👌
I didnt know because its just not my workflow. I come from the school of bein scared to death to print things. and remember im a mix engineer guy lol! ahahahah
I’m a an avid Pro Tools user (no pun intended) but no lie in a few years Luna is gonna be a problem especially as UA expands their expansion plugin line. To answer the question of the topic at hand; yes outboard gear is very much so worth it. I have been mixing and mastering (professionally) for the last 2 years and felt like I have solved the analog vs digital wars with my mixes. That’s until I bought the SSL Fusion Rack and haven’t been the same. Now I’m operating a hybrid studio with mastering hardware to process my finished mixes. The best advice I can give any up and coming engineer/producer/beat maker is If you’re serious about your craft invest in yourself. We spend money on bs anyway. Once you buy it it’s yours forever. Besides, Many companies have financing options. You won’t be disappointed.
When working with Audio, your computer only uses one primary core. That’s why when purchasing a laptop always look at the 1 core processing speed. The rest of the cores are basically inactive when working with audio. It’s very few things that get off loaded to the other cores.
I love analog gear. Just expensive but I recently purchased my first tube channel strip and I love how it sounds before I do any in the box processing. Could I get that sound with out it? Most likely but idk I love it and wouldn’t go back to plugging straight into my Apogee Symphony

I feel your pain I went through this recently with Windows operating system updates I had to reinstall everything start from scratch lost a couple of sessions and then even fl-21 that crashes sometimes time-to-time more frequently than fl20
Ableton is my go to.. I started on protools , but once I got off Mac, I just never looked back. Ableton you have to learn it, but it can do everything you need it to do!
Some processes have to be done synchronously and cant be spread over several threads but mostly its just plugin developers not adding multithread support.
The korg triton is so outdated, but i can see where hes coming from. As a collectors piece it would be awesome. Because back in the day when i started music the triton and motif was a staple in the beat making world. I always wanted 1 but could never afford it. I dont want it now but if i was to sit down with one right now it would bring back alot of great memories working on projects.
12:12 Pro Tools ONLY uses performance cores and NOT the efficiency cores. Check the system usage monitor in the DAW. There's a few videos showing the proof.
I can break it down. Id love to join your show for an episode to break it down and also talk about music equipment in general. High level, different, different os systems do threading differently. Most general purpose libraries don’t do well with distributing that work load. This is where a dsp based system can do better. Also, if something is developed and optimized for the os itself, that still won’t cut it. The software needs to be optimized for the cpu architecture and os both which is a very time consuming task to do.
The Vst is better in the sense u get all the banks I had a rack unit and it sounded marginally better than the plug-in plus Splice has the whole Korg Collection rent to own
@@boutstaxx BUT YOU CAN'T TRACK A VST THROUGH ANALOG GEAR LIKE THE ZULU THEN SIDE CHAIN IT NEW YORK STYLE AND I CAN'T USE 4K MODE ON MY SSL 2 AND ALSO THE SEQUENCER IN THE TRITON JUST KEEPS YOU FOCUS AND WORKING! BUT THE VST IS COOL JUST NOT ANALOG!
Hi Devon I’m an #audionerd and just nerdl lol, to answer your core question: Music production heavily relies on the processing power of a SINGLE core. Adding plugins is a linear process of course so one one chain could be on the same core like you saw. That was a big decision I had to determine when I built my pc. More cores doesn’t matter when processing music, but rather how powerful one single core operates ( I have an 8 core Ryzen 5 processor)
Have any of you seen the Cranborne R8 500? It is a USB interface combined with a 500 series hardware module rack in one piece, it looks like the real in the box/outboard hybrid studio with a small footprint. I find it really interesting, and I think 500 series gear is perfect for home studios.
honestly, certain DAWs use power differently. i noticed that Pro Tools and logic will stop the playback and throw up a warning. Reaper is alot lighter so its smoother.
You really only need analog up front for recording. The rest can easily be done in the box. Neve 1073 into a CL 1B and your mic of choice is butter. I like to use my Avalon sometimes to depending on the source.
Outboard solves a very different problem than plugins in terms of audio. While they are similar, they aren't the same. It's only when you start to compare outcomes do you ask questions about how someone else chain sounds like x. I think at some point the young producer or engineer will experience that hardware and that's how it happens. They go through the gear lust. Hybrid is the future in my opinion.
Y’all need a logic user on the show. Logic really the best for ppl that mix , record, and beatmake. If you just mix gotta go pro tools and if you just make beats I’d say fl for hip hop and ableton for pop and edm
M1 macs do not allow something that is called “Hyper Threading” which is something the older i9 intel core chips allow. Hyper threading basically splits cores in 4 so when you got the m1 each core has 2 channels and it forces an individual core to overwork compared to a hyper threading core. So if you have super heavy sessions it will make your cpu act up but overall m1 are really dope because of their ability to stay cool. It will work great for recording sessions and even mixing sessions but as producers we use a lot more vst and plugins with heavy cpu. It’s sucks but it’s still a fire computer. I upgraded from my old 2015 max to the 22 M1 Pro and it was worth it
Ima be honest I made the switch to Meta tune and I have not looked back. Meta tune has been amazing. Super smooth tuning even on higher speeds it doesn’t sound as choppy as Autotune normally does. The sustain knob on the tune is amazing
