Seems like you have an impersonator here... Someone replied me posing to be you... I'm not sure though...
Great episode guys. Finally some brothers that speak my language 👍🏾
Triton was my thing. I used to sequence it with protools mixing it with virtual instruments but yeah then you have to dump the audio in in real time
This podcast is so necessary. Listening to people nerd out about audio is something I didn't know I needed in my life.
Us either but we gotcha every Wednesday!!
Top 3 Depression Warning Signs:

- Talking about feeling trapped or feeling that there are no solutions

Genius idea for a podcast I am hooked. This is the best podcast for producers and musicians and we never saw it coming but was happy when it arrived lol
Analog gear has that certain sound though, but it's all subjective at the end of the day. Technology has made it easy to access that same sound nowadays especially with UA and the Console app where you can have virtual preamps to use to record into with.
You guys should start a convo on whether the major recording studio is dead, being that its so easy to create and record music in the box now as long as someone has a computer, interface, DAW, and microphone. Lol
That is an amazing take you got it!
I love this discussion. I fell like everyone talk about the difference as if it's all about EQ. I think what gets overlooked is the change in soundstage. Every shootout I've listened to between plugins and analog gear, there is a clear change in the width and depth. On the plugins, everything moves more centered and is flatter, where the equivalent setup in hardware maintains or enhances that width and depth. This change absolutely effects the levels at which we hear things in the mix, so the choices you make for level and eq will be different. This is why I think that the analog world is so coveted and respected.
Agreed
I feel that way about my summing amp it adds so much to my mix it blows my mind
I have a TON of plugins and they are really useful, but I've also come to enjoy tracking out the box (ex: tracking my vocals, hardware synths & other instruments) through outboard preamps and/or channel strips. Noting too expensive either for the most part, but it does add some color and saturation that I really like. Also, since the tracked signals are coming in as a good source, the tracks tend to sit better in the entire mix and almost sound more polished or kind of mixed already compared to some of the software virtual instruments that may need a bit of mixing to get them to sit right in a mix. Everything else is in the box for me, so I guess I'm more hybrid lol!
I need more of these series. These 3 are hilarious!
Oh every Wednesday!!
Trust me, you won't feel reluctant to use keyboards/synthesizers if you get some more info on MIDI sync capabilities! Great episode! Oh, and I produce/Rewire with Reason and Pro Tools. :)
Also. Just to toss this out there for the analog vs digital discussion. You can’t listen to a track and be like oh yeah that was done with analog gear, or aww yeah this was done with digital plugins. As long as it sounds good, that’s what matters. 👏🏻
i LOVE MY “iGNORANCE” OF WHAt i tHiNK i KNOW BEFORE WAtCHiNG tHiS PODCASt. YOU FELLAS BROADEN MY SPECtRUM OF PERSPECtiVE iN AND OUt OF tHE BOX!
I do all my mixes ITB but at the very end I run every single mix through my pair or Rupert Neve Designs 542 and it gives punch, weight and cohesion like no other plugins does. Adding a bit of analog to your tracks is the way to go! It took me years to find out but now I'm in a happy place ;)
I like the hybrid setups like this! Give me best of both worlds
I could sit and watch this podcast all day. It's my favorite by a long shot! Keep it coming guys!
That means so much to us thank you!
Bx Console line of channel strip plugins. Has all the mojo. Use that in Studio One with the MixFx engine, sounds spot on to me. Run in high sample rates to minimize aliasing and you won't be able to tell the difference between the plugin and the gear. People gotta gain stage properly going into the plugin to get the right sound out of it. We can get the analog sound in the box nowadays.
Cranborne 500 series is the future of both worlds it’s has a summing mixer, interface, and the 500 series rack all in one you can use your analog gear as plugins with no routing just plug it to your computer and you can hybrid mix with almost no experience with analog
That space bar is essential for Fl producer work flow
I'm so late on this show! Devon you always will be my all time favorite Audio Nerd! Thanks bro!!!
And for that I appreciate u!!
Lol when i got my triton i found the gring track prgram just playing around with it. At the time i didnt know neptunes used it. Crazy. Great video.
BIG UP DEVVON FOR BRINGING UP THE NEKO
In my humblest of opinions....
Analog/Protocols will always reign Supreme
Recording: Protools>logic>abelton>studio one
Producing: (excluding protools)
Anything analog/akai mpc>FL studio>abelton>maschine
You can “shift + click” to copy and paste in FL or you can “ctrl + b” to just repeat
I appreciate the history but I'm all about the sound. Just like editing film. I always hated the log and capturing process until the memory card came out! I just skipped hours of this part of the editing process.
If you heard a Highland Dynamics BG2 on male vocals or if you heard an Overtsayer Modular Channel, you'd change your mind thinking plugins will every touch these pieces sonically speaking. Also, analog gear has real energy in it, that gives sources a "feeling" that digital can never replicate. And sometimes you can get the job done with one analog piece instead of a whole host of plugins in series that still dont even achieve the desired sonics. Mostly ever major song out gets run through analog at some point whether on the front end during recording, during mixing or during mastering, there is a real reason for that. It sounds better and audio is a game of inches.. As much money as some of you are spending on subpar plugins you could have gotten 2 really nice hardware pieces that there's no plugin emulation of and gone hybrid.. There will be a continued merger of plugins and analog to get the best of both worlds and there will be a continuation of hybrid setups. And regarding mic emulations the Townsend Labs Sphere L22 is better then the sibilant slate. Sonically speaking analog will always reign Supreme, especially in the low end.
Excellent podcast. Please some more of this!
It’s coming every Wednesday!
Yo this may be the only thing I’ve actually thought of hitting the notification bell for
My Twin X works the same way as the analog gear they're talking about. Like, in certain situations I will not turn it off. It will literally not load a certain console setting depending on certain factors. It even starts humming if you run certain shit and make it work hard.
I love this bro. been binging
I’m hooked please don’t miss a Wednesday from here on out…
We won’t we gotcha! And make sure to rate us on Apple podcast and Spotify!
Amazing session chief. Looking forward to more episodes🌟
We’re gonna keep ‘em coming what topic do you want us to hit next
I feel like if plugins find a way to emulate the warmth of analogs and not just the analog noise but the actual warmth and saturation of it
Hmm. That Slate mic has been in my cart for a year now. Maybe it's time. I'll wait for another sale.
i'm watching it all, the sad part is that is not longer, but i'm ok with it
Grateful for this podcast. Great stuff!!
It’s not about the gear it’s about how well u know the gear you own, I’ve seen the most trashiest studios with amazing sound and I’m an audio engineer I was like wow, I’ve also seen the cleanest most immaculate studios with the most trashiest sound 🤷🏾♂️ it’s the people that knows how to utilize is MixedByALi started with a DBX compressor etc and made some of the craziest mixes
I totally agree with you I think if you know what you’re doing today you can achieve the sound you desire
In FL it’s Shift drag to copy 😂
It always seems to me like analog creates a sound where all the harmonics are tight and smooth. Like one cohesive sound that was made using the principles of the quantum mechanics. Maybe with quantum computing they will be able to model analog perfectly.
Not the neko!! Made a Stu ANYWHERE 🔥🔥
yeah yeah yeah - Skrxlla (Big Dog Status AutoTune Song)
That point about the hardware sounding better after being on for a long time, etc. is vital. I have hardware and I thought I was bugging like this shit sound different when I just turn it on than when it’s on for a while
This is well known, especially with tube gear, including tube mics. Youre supposed to let it warm up for 15 to 20 mins before even running a source through it.
So this got me thinking about the relationship between software and hardware advancements. Thinking that software plugins could produce the height of some legendary hardware… and I had to remember this, but they use software to create hardware…
So, imagine the type of hardware they are creating with the new software 🤯 I imagine the hardware would be running coolant through it like we do blood in our veins haha 🤣
The Origin Spirit microphone is also slept on heavy❗️🔥Suuuuppper dope Mic🔥
Yeah my best friend has that one. I’ve got the Lewitt LCT-640 TS. It’s slept on too.
Acoustics are super important in a studio as well
I use FL and I would also keep the Space Bar on Facts.
You can Quantize in logic pro X a wave file
Wat?!!!!!
You can but it messes with the audio as far as recording vocals is concerned. Haven’t tried it with anything else
I use Logic. I'm with FL homie. I'm keeping the space bar 🤪
I think the advantage of analog gear can also be a downside. Analog gear can bring a unique texture, color, and the sound, which can be great for artists/producers/engineers. However, like Devon said, that sound can change between the uses of that gear. Plug-ins, being out of the rhythmic, will generally bring a consistency in your sound. And if you are a competent engineer, you can tell her your own specific sound by manipulating those plug-ins in those settings. That’s how we’re able to get all these great vocal chains and templates that people are selling. So I don’t think that analog gear will be phased out completely but overtime we will probably see more engineers moving to mixing in the box.
Late to the party, but Shift + click and drag will duplicate whatever is selected at the time in FL Studio lol
Bro wav audio if you was recording the triton into something like logic theres features that should let you quantize the audio 👀🤔🤔
Yeah I all I'm worried about analog wise is my color going into. Theres a BUNCH of color now from the plugins. UAD has really changed my life with their emulations...but I gotta come out to yall studio cuz yall dopest out! Keep em coming!
Appreciate that!! We have neve portico master buss at the spot too!
I've been seeing a lot of people using guitar pedals with analog gear, esp in 2022 so maybe it's a thing now....or always has been but im green
@@KnowledgeOfSelf144 yeah, I think it’s cuz they are smaller and creative/cheaper.

@@HelpMeDevvon Question,
How do you use the God particle with the dangerous 2 bus?
Is the 2bus going into the God particle ?
Are you using both limiters or just God particle Limiter ?
The 2 bus looks really interesting would love to see more of it and how u like to use it
@@HelpMeDevvon also do you use the good particle with your master bus processor? If so how?
An old school engineer that use analog associate of mind said analog will never not used in professional studio. The sound is too different and better.. His words not mine. He said it could never compared.
So here’s the thing. Nerdy response incoming -
Mayyyybe mixing can be replaced fully by plugins. But for recording (1) no. You try to track a full live band with only plugins. First off, it’s almost not even practical. The only system that seems to get it reliable might be UAD cuz they have the real-time processing & monitoring dialed. Artists aren’t gonna flow with plug-in delay. Even UAD has a plug-in limit! So hardware isn’t really replaceable for syncing live musicians.
Secondly, you aren’t gonna be able to replace hardware for plugins in mastering (2) fully either. Cuz mastering is about simplicity & precision. Plugins capture small frames (samples) and are reacting based on those. That’s why folks are doing as much as 4x oversample (or more). When you have multi-dynamic (program) content & you have eq or compression, it’s gonna need to react as quickly as possible and the sample rate effects it. That’s why when summing in the Dangerous Box everything pops out vs. saturation itb (w/o Oversampling) can make things mushy. Oversampling isn’t just for aliasing, it actually makes the plugins more sensitive & precise because the waveforms have a higher resolution. It’s like seeing in 3D vs pixelated Mario. But analog never has this problem of precision & response. And in my opinion, this is revealed MOST in 2 bus & program material.
option + drag >>>
Ableton for live
Wow big studio be bamboozling people! Imma tell you straight up I just mix and master no in studio recording. I only record my own music and yup I use a ...naw I'm not saying what audiobox or mic I use because it doesn't matter... I'm not recording clients. I only do mixing and mastering using logic pro x so all you immerging artist who record at home, holla at me! I will mix & master your work like a $200hr pro using the FOCUSRITE for half a quarter of what they charge! 🤪 I only master what I mix or just mix. Great show guys 😉. Blessings 🤗

I feel like analog nowadays is the most useful for RECORDING. But as far as mixing and mastering, digital wins easily
Bro hahaha y’all got me dying with this studio’s having thousands of dollars worth of equipment recording into scarlets convo. There’s a whole new series for y’all. Go into high dollar studios and expose their bs. Call it “studio nightmares” 😂
Yooooo this is genuinely a dope idea😂😂😂
Devon producing in ProTools is sick lol 😂
I had the open labs miko for a little while. It ran windows
No space bar ? That’s wild .
Analog just has so much more depth, width, harmonics and transient control that plugins cannot emulate. Not knocking any emulation plugin but its just not comparable. Now to us "nerds" its a world of a difference, but to the average consumer it doesn't matter. For instance, if you just record raw vocals through a Avalon 737 and then record through a UAD emulation of it with the same parameters, you'll hear the difference..
only old songs get replayed and still hit because digital came and ruined the overall frequency.
Analog gear is dead! It’s only kept alive by companies trying to rinse people for money. Once we moved from analog gear to digital mainly using ProTools but with other DAWs as well, the music recording industry was evolving in terms of plugin development. Then suddenly around 2009-2012 word started getting out that digital lacked warmth and shit and people harped back to the good old days of analog recording. Cue summing boxes madness and people who just lusted after gear were hooked. Plugin developers then spent tons of R&D on emulating analog consoles and this obsession just got worse. Plugin manufacturers wasted so much time on this lunacy instead of developing forward thinking digital plugins. It’s time to kill this nonsense dead. Digital sounds just as good if not better than analog especially when it does what digital is good for instead of obsessing over SSL consoles etc. Great show by the way.
Fl really don’t need copy paste just hold the shift key 😉
We Ocean on here for a logic voice
I’m a mixer engineer and I would like to have an interview with you guys even though zoom.
Reaper gang
whtas that Monitor in the Background with My Audio Nerds ?!?!?!:) God Bless
I here this a lot, but does outboard gear matter now when it comes to creating music usually it does to the content creators ie sometimes the producer or engineer or singer that likes the way the vocals or music sounds through a particular mike or gear that’s if you’re making music in your basement for only you to hear to the consumer or fan the majority music makes them feel a certain way that has nothing to do with what gear it was created on
Logic gang
Mannnnnn how you use UAD and don't have the Townsend Sphere L22 mic??? I promise using it with console would be better for you than the Slate.
Who is your Jamaican father my brother...is he a known producer or engineer?
Good stuff

Cool!!!
Dude you could send midi to the triton and then Quantize the midi and record that
Very very true I’m super not getting any hardware synths anytime soon
Analog is back ppl want VHS tapes now to big record players
Your discord website links broken brooo
The standard consumer does not know or care, what the music is made on. Computer, tape, what DAW. They don't care. They care how it makes them feel. The end.
Is it a license for Pro Q? 😂
i think plugins already surpassed analog gear especially on the go (love ua) but plugins will NEVER match up to the sound of analog gear period point blank.
but i think if your like me you dream about anaolg gear everyday when your an engineer lol, you can literally use stock plugins to do stuff to get the job and make a hit record but with analog gear its so much exciting or even just the emulation.
you will always feel that analog doesnt matter untill you really experience analog , expand your skill set youngstaz.
I don't even listen to Podcasts bruh yet here I am. #FLGang btw
Give us a chance man!!!
HANDSOME AUDIO ZULU BOX LOOK IT UP! BLACK INVENTOR TOO!
Soon enough, digital plugins will be able to replicate the sounds of all analog gear. It's only a matter of time
I just don’t know about that. Computers have limits unlike the analog domain
@@HelpMeDevvon I am a fan of analog gear myself, you can push analog really hard without it sounding harsh. It's definitely more forgiving and has a more natural sound/tone to it. I just think it's crazy some of the plugins they have nowadays. I can only imagine what they will have in 5-10 years
Analog gear is great for recording but not necessary for mixing
I disagree but totally understand what you mean !
@@HelpMeDevvon I just haven’t seen it used to make a difference.

Fasho man. I just wanna add that I wish I can watch them podcasts all day.

Nah the space bar stays
Who got a Nikto? 🤣
I’m just now realizing how little you guys know about the best analog gear in the world that’s affordable. Also you know you can store presets with a midi switcher. Recall sounds on synths most of them have that ability. 🤔 I think you guys are missing a bit of gear knowledge here 🤔
Let me posit this.. digital will surpass analog in this respect..this generation is hearing different, we live in a MP3 DIGITAL WORLD! & you guys reference point is " DIGITAL" thus the demand for analog gear diminishes! Thats All....😁
I see ur point but if I took someone and showed them my analog gear and what it does they pee their pants
Plugins won't ever Surpass Analog Gear there is no resale value and its not the same sound as analog gear
Neko is trash….My cousin has one in his studio. It was good in theory tho.
