From a mixing standpoint Studio One 6 is a great DAW. The stock sounds aren't the best, but I use S1 with Arturia V collection and Spectrasonics stuff and I am very happy with it.
The Slate VSXs are INCREDIBLE! These grant the stereo separation Devvon spoke about via many virtual environments, as allowing the mixer to reference several playback scenarios such as mix/master studios, cars, clubs and various headphones. (including iPods). As they are standard equipped, the low-end is reproduced nicely due to their patented design. I love them dearly! Thanks so much for the very engaging discussion! Keep at it, please! 😀
Great video, entertaining as always! My favorite tags gotta be Wheezy and Southside. Anyway I did feel the need to comment this (Devvon you actually pointed this out at 22:07 indirectly, though I'm not sure if it was your intention) but headphones are actually NOT Stereo. They are Binaural, because each ear is only getting one channel. The Left channel is going to the left ear, and the Right channel is going to the right ear. When listening on speakers (studio monitors), you are listening in Stereo because each ear is ofc hearing both channels, AND the phase differences along with them. So if there's a single thing that "should" always be done on speakers it's panning/stereo imaging & placement imo
I create in Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio most, Ableton second, DP 10 for mixing, just starting to get back into ProTools. Also for mixing, headphones w/ Sonarworks SoundID Reference are what I have been leaning on. I make final adjustments on speakers afterwards to confirm what I heard inSonarworks.
I'd like to hear y'all's thoughts on what studio one could implement to make y'all switch. The switch for me was a no-brainer cuz I came from audition. But there's definitely some things in the other DAWS I would like to see like ableton's live looping capabilities.
Due to my room design my mixes out of my monitors/sub don’t translate. When I bought my Neumann NDH 30s my mixes started translating on any setup I played my music on. Them open backs give me the fell of being in a room listening to the mix! Cost me a pretty penny but best money I spent for my setup!
I learned studio one because it was clean and not a lot of people used it. I started making beats on fruity loops and I learned to mix on pro tools. But studio one is the daw for me. The one up pro tools has on studio one is the stock plugins. And fl studio just makes beats hit harder it's the soft clipper
I don’t have enough space in my environment, so my open back DT-990 PROs are all I have to use right now. Bounce back and forth between the car and home theater system to check the bass. Take a listen on the laptop and cell phone as well for comparison with other records, but the headphones are my mix HQ. 🤷🏾♂️

Using a system like slate VSX, or a comparable sim software like real monitor (not nx, not good at all imo) it totally has changed my perspective of how feasible it is to get a good mix out of headphones. Not to mention it gives me the ability to mix anywhere with a laptop. It takes a bit of time to get used to but it’s absolutely worth it. After about 10 minutes I forget I’m wearing headphones and the low end response is so much better than I ever imagined it being. My best mixes have been made on this system, look into it Devvon it’s a game changer .
NX is alright, although it does seem to come in 2nd Place. But $30 for an NX plugin vs. $480 for Slate definitely skewed my decision. Definitely wanna try Slate soon though.
@@djlucasd I think the key to slates version being so good is the headphones. Not the biggest fan of hardware-dependent software, but imo unless you have a ton of well placed treatment and very solid monitors (which is not an option for a lot of us), VSX will give you a more accurate assessment than your room will. Not to mention having the different emu’s like the cars. Blew my mind…when I loaded my mix into the G Wagon simulation and was able to make minor adjustments to my drum levels in order for it to be just right in that sim… it absolutely slapped in every real car system I tried it on. I really do believe it’s a game changer for feasibly mixing in any environment you find yourself needing to mix in.
I'm a hobby mixer and I don't have any sort of treated room. I spend a good bit of money and bought some Austrian Audio HiX65 headphones and instantly my mixed went to the next level. So if you're someone who is stuck recording and mixing on headphones, spend the money on the best studio monitoring headphones you can get. It's absolutely worth it.
I have the nuraphones (the over-ear with built in buds). The stereo image is probably the best that I’ve heard from closed-back headphones The sub frequencies are incredible, but the whole frequency curve is processed and therefore far from flat. They’re not useful for mixing, but manage to be very impressive as consumer grade headphones. And as of now, atmos still sounds weak with them. Idk how to really get an atmos sound without an atmos system.
Monitors and rooms go hand and hand. The name of the game is translation. Mixing on 1 mixcube in mono, then switching to monitors, then referencing in headphones has yielded me the best results so far. Id love if there was a pair of headphones that translated. Id do it soley in them, but I haven't found headphones that can do that yet.
New topic ... do we have too many options with gear/plugins for mixing and making music in general 🤔..example some of the greatest sounding music ever made was done with less ..so do we have too many tools..??
logic has gotten better y'all. step sequencer is dope. drum synths mix well with my samples, and when you're done mixing you can import a video and arrange to it.
the thing is most ppls rooms aren’t treated right for monitors. it’s easier to hear all the frequencies in a consisant way like for when you’re referencing
Don't forget about the Tags that arnt Tags, hearing Wheezy's VOX is a certified tag at this point. or Even Drake using the Biggy Vox "SIXXX" . And lets not forget about KY Engineering the rare moment when the engineer was putting his tag in songs
Lol i would never use any Bose or Beats By Dre headphones for audio mixing. I don't need that enhanced bass lying to me lol. But nah, you'd be surprised how low these mix headphones can go. The Sony MDR-7506s was my first pair of headphones to mix in coming out of college. Dem joints BUMP...but when needed. Right now I use the Audio Technica ATH-M50Xs and to me, they sound phenomenal for mixing lol. In all seriousness, anyone could mix on anything ie laptop speakers, small radio, etc(not recommended lol) but you just gotta check your mix on another source like your car(and you gotta know how your car already sounds with other records) in airpods, bluetooth speakers, the speakers from your phone itself or even a home theater system if you have one. A lot of successful engineers use headphones, in the box. But if you got studio monitors, you're always in good shape as long as your room doesn't f*ck it up lol.
I used the M50xs for 3 years, they are good for mixing and niw moved over to HEDDphones and they blow them out the water. Highly recommend for headphone mixers.
