Hi Teela I found your site whilst looking for help for my son who is learning Illustrator. Thanks so much for sharing your skills, its been a huge help!
I just heard you mentioned on Passive Income podcast today and I just clicked on your video without realizing who you are. Wow you are good. I'm 55 and want a new career so I'm learning Ai. Thanks for this video. You made it simple.
Thanks for tutorial. In Corel Draw there is the ability to choose the distance of the text from the path...ie. 4 pixels above path..8 pixels above path etc. Can Illustrator do this? Thanks.
Thnk u so much..i have a question, in that video u explain draw the path 1st, i still confuse...how if we already have text and then we draw path at the 2nd? How to place the exist text to that path..?
Ive spent 10 years in packaging and always HATED typing on circular paths. This helped so much. Its a shame the bloody menu is hidden in the first place!
is there a way to turn a previously straight line which was turned into a wave using the zigzag effect - into a path??? I try to, but the text follows the path instead of the warped wave. So it's straight and not wavey.
I am creating business cards and wondering... Do you know how I can blend out the bleeding in Illustrator? Like the preview in InDesign. That would be great!
Can you also edit your path after you already put some type on it? I want to really precisely fit in a path somewhere but if I first make the path it doesn't look great.
Hi Teela.. Thanks for the awesome video.. i love your video.. now I have a problem, after the text is attached to the curve, how do I separate the curve from text? or how to just delete the curve? so that only the text is left without curves? and the text is still editable
Why do you need the curve removed? It's a path that's invisible to everyone else, keeps your text editable + maintains the ability to alter its shape if ever needed - you definitely want to keep it!
I have questions on illustrating/ sketching / drawing on illustrator. I have a tablet, but when i use calligraphy brushes, the ends arent as tapered as I want them to be, and I have upped the fidelity but still no luck, help me?
Nice tutorial, but for example, what about if I want to do type on the path of the circle, but I want that the type goes to bottom direction, instead of going up, do I explain myself? Thank you :)
Excellent video, thank you very much, I have a couple of questions that I hope can be answered. I made a path in the shape of a heart. I want to write two different things on either side of the outside of the heart, one on the left and another on the right, however, I am having so many troubles trying to achieve this. So far I have not had any luck trying to do it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciate it, once again thank you.
question. I used the pencil to create a path, but every time I try to use "T", and type, it doesn't type anything and keeps jumping from place to place, what am I doing wrong?
Strange, I am using Adobe Illustrator but instead of getting a blinking cursor, it prints some funky words that I have never seen before, both backwards and upside down, but I get no blinking cursor. It inserts text as soon as I click on it. Am I supposed to click on the stroke with right mouse button or something?
This is something new that Illustrator added since this video was made (not sure why they made it the default because it's super annoying). To disable that from happening, go to Illustrator > preferences > type and uncheck the very last checkbox for 'fill new type objects with placeholder text'
You are absolutely awesome. I had never seen Illustrator do that before so I didn't imagine there would be a preference that would cause that effect. Thank you so much. I'm subscribing to your videos....thanks again.
Hey! You can grab the free cheat sheet here (click the grey download button in the post) every-tuesday.com/how-to-perfectly-type-on-a-path-in-illustrator
The issue I am having is I have a line art graphic and I want to Type On A Path, but when I select it, it keeps saying "You must click on a non-compound, non-masking path to create text along a path". Let's make believe my graphic is a line art graphic of a head. I am trying to type on a path around the top of the head. I've tried converting to shape, saving both in AI and PNG, etc. Tried choosing Select and Direct Select, I keep getting that message. I can't find any info on TH-cam or Google for this exact issue. Thanks for your help.
You need a regular path (draw a line with the pencil tool and it will work), if you convert it to a shape, it's no longer a path and if you're getting those other errors, it means something has been done to the path to make it no longer a plain/regular path
Your video is great! But I can’t get rid of the actual path line? Yours seems to just disappear, I can’t get mine to go away without accidentally deleting the font as well! Help!!
Use the "Add Anchor Point" or "Delete Anchor Point" tools (Nested with the Pen Tool) and then use the "Direct Selection Tool" (White Arrow) to Click/Drag the "Anchor Points as you like
How can I extend my text path without manipulating the leading and tracking...? I tried so many different ways could not do it and could not find online tutorials on this.... Hope you could help me - thanks in advance! ;-)
The one way I've found works is to choose the pen tool, click on the endpoint of the path so the pen controls appear on it, then hold down the command key and click and drag the endpoint to be longer. Maybe not the best solution for anything other than a plain arc, though.
+Teela Cunningham (Every-Tuesday) I guess the best way to do that is to take a circle and subtract it from the text descenders and ascenders. I just get lazy sometimes 😄
Great !! Your every tutorial explains everything in detail. Keep up the good work. However I just want to suggest you one thing that Can you please put your name and website link on every video. At the beginning or at the end. Just Help us in remembering website address :)
Why does illustrator do everything in the least intuitive way possible? The controls for how you edit the path suddenly COMPLETELY change to where you need TOTALLY DIFFERENT TOOLS instead of just behaving like a NORMAL PATH!!! ARAARARRGHGHGHGHGHG I HATE ILLUSTRATOR SOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! IT HAS THE WORST VECTOR TOOLS IN THE WORLD
For those in a hurry like me, this video could be from 2:58 to 3:15.
Press n on keyboard
Press t on keyboard
Type what you want.
Thank you!
Wish I would check sooner the comment section... Thanks, though!
mine does not work this way
Thank you! Also in a hurry myself, so this helped greatly!
wow and I've been making half circles the hard way for the last 2 years lol, slapping myself right now
Thanks for making this so straightforward and clean.
oh my god.... after searching the internet for what felt like an eternity, im so happy to have found your video. THANK YOU.

Hi Teela I found your site whilst looking for help for my son who is learning Illustrator. Thanks so much for sharing your skills, its been a huge help!
I'm so glad! Thanks for checking them out - let me know if you ever have trouble finding a certain topic!
I used the tools more instinctively, but I needed to try a lot. So thanks for sharing, I am much more faster now without trial & error!
Ahhh so refreshing to finally get this with your easy instruction, thanks!!
my new teacher,love u

Thanks so much! Would you mind sharing a link to the podcast? I had no idea I was mentioned :) Glad you found me!
Long, but loaded with information, including the information I needed (unlike the first one I looked at). Great job!
Thanks for tutorial. In Corel Draw there is the ability to choose the distance of the text from the path...ie. 4 pixels above path..8 pixels above path etc. Can Illustrator do this? Thanks.
Still relevant and very helpful today thank you.
Former warp user here --- thanks for the basic but foundation-building video!
Your videos are so helpful. Finding you will really help me up my skills.

You are a legend! love your tutorials!!
LOVE your videos!
learned so much, please don't stop:)
What about having all text right side up?
What about modifying the path you've already typed on?
These are the best videos to learn! Thank you SO much!
Really awesome, competent and helpful!!! I am sincerely grateful!!!
Thank you very much ! In just a few minutes , I got all the things I need to know.
Thank you so much for this! Very easy to follow. Perfect for beginners! ♥️
Ive spent 10 years in packaging and always HATED typing on circular paths.
This helped so much. Its a shame the bloody menu is hidden in the first place!
Can you add multiple lines of text to one path or would you need to make separate paths?
That's a nice tutorial. loved it
Thanks so much! I loved to try this out and your instructions are so clear :) I've subscribed :)
Great video, it is nice listening to you and your directions are easy to follow.
So fun, Teela. Congrats to that!
ive been trying to make a soccer logo and i need the text in a slight curved pattern however the spacing is always crooked
is there a way to turn a previously straight line which was turned into a wave using the zigzag effect - into a path??? I try to, but the text follows the path instead of the warped wave. So it's straight and not wavey.
Nice tutorial, just a little add on; as any tool in Ai, you can access Type on a Path options with a double click on the toolbar icon.
How do you rotate it afterwards vertically without distorting the path?
I am creating business cards and wondering... Do you know how I can blend out the bleeding in Illustrator? Like the preview in InDesign. That would be great!
Can you also edit your path after you already put some type on it? I want to really precisely fit in a path somewhere but if I first make the path it doesn't look great.
yep! Use the direct select tool to alter the points 👍
you just made my day!!!
absolutely amazing tutorial, thank you
Editing, clear instructions, straight to the point ✌
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!
This video is super helpful and detailed. Thanks!

How to adjust the distance between text and baseline?
I have questions on illustrating/ sketching / drawing on illustrator. I have a tablet, but when i use calligraphy brushes, the ends arent as tapered as I want them to be, and I have upped the fidelity but still no luck, help me?
OMG thank you so much. I can't believe how much I learned in 11 minutes. You are awesome.
Nice tutorial, but for example, what about if I want to do type on the path of the circle, but I want that the type goes to bottom direction, instead of going up, do I explain myself?
Thank you :)

thank u !
Very professional. Thanks so much :-)
Now if only there was an easy way to warp or arc text around the circle path instead of warping one letter, rotate it and do the next one. Great tut!
There is, I showed it at 6:12 in the vid. Stay away from warping!
+Teela Cunningham (Every-Tuesday) I guess the best way to do that is to take a circle and subtract it from the text descenders and ascenders. I just get lazy sometimes 😄
