      Very true Alex! It is the little things that make a big difference. These are the sort of touches that make the aircraft feel “alive” as I was trying to allude to in the review. PMDG certainly know what they’re doing and they’ve proved to be masters of their craft once again : )

    Ah , great stuff again !! Have been checking out You-Tube most of the evening to see if you posted a highly anticipated review . As regards the DC6 , its simply fantastic . This product finally puts the " Sim " into MSFS 2020 . The one thing , that stands out for me with this product ( besides all the other excellent features ) , is the ability to jump in and just fly the thing , without much fuss ( ie , you can go " sim lite " or " sim hardcore " ) . There's something there for both the casual simmer , and the study level guy / gal to get his or her teeth into . I hope that other developers will take these options onboard when developing future products for MSFS . Many thanks again for the great review, and helping people , such as myself , in making well informed decisions on purchasing products for MSFS .

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Well I’m flattered haha! I was hoping to get the video out a bit sooner, but boy, this one was marathon to create! I completely agree with everything you’ve said there. The aircraft is more or less a masterpiece and I think represents a turning point for MSFS.
      The Auto Flight Engineer is a superb feature! Brilliant for those who are new to the aircraft, or simply have limited interest in trying to manage 4(8?) fickle radial engines. I can actually see myself continuing to use it, even when I’m more familiar with the aircraft. I think it’s a more realistic way of operating this old gal at any rate.
      Thanks once again for your support. Happy flying! : )

    I was waiting for this! And yes… Blowing my mind away indeed! What a product, man! This sets the flight simulation standard to a very high level. And your video was awesome!!! Joy to watch. Because of the AFE it came into my mind how supercool it would be to fly this majestic beauty with a shared cockpit option, wouldn’t it? (And as a fan from the Eastern Block, I had also an idea how great it would be to see a Tu-154 in the sim with this level of fidelity and dressed up in MALÉV livery. 🙂)
    Btw. it’s funny that you have significantly different voice talking to you engeneer and to the ATC in the radio. 😅
    All in all, one of your best videos, real joy the watch it, thank you for the experience and for your hard work!!! 🙏🏻

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it certainly sets the standard now in MSFS! Without doubt the reigning champion, when it comes to attention to detail.
      Shared cockpit functionality would be completely awesome. I’ve yet to try it at all in MSFS (more to come on that soon hopefully ; ) and I’ve no idea whether it would work for something this complex (sadly I suspect not).
      There used to be an excellent freeware TU154 available for FSX back in the day - that thing was basically study level! I did actually manage to teach myself to fly it, but sadly I wouldn’t have a clue where to begin these days. I do remember that thing had a switch for pretty much EVERYTHING. You even had to turn the artificial horizon on and off (not sure why you’d want to turn it off haha), a lot of Russian aircraft seem to be the same way. I’m going to have to go away now and see if I can still find that thing again. . .
      I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a Tu-154 at some point, no doubt it’ll get a MALÉV repaint as well haha.
      Glad you enjoyed the video Péter. Actually watching it back, I have to say I was a touch disappointed with how it came out. Not that I thought it was “bad” per se, but I don’t think it quite conveys how amazing the DC6 “felt” to fly. Planning on live-streaming it at some point though, so there’s always another chance to get it “right” ; )
      Thanks again Péter! Take care : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations could have been more amazing only if I fly this little beauty… one day it will happen! 😃
      I remember that in the Kamov Ka-26 there was also a switchable artificial horizon, so I asked my father what was it for. He said during cropdusting at the end of the field the sharo turn was not really good for the gauge so they switched it off. And anyway he was flying close to the ground at good conditions so it was not really necessary to have it. 🙂 but it doesn’t really explains why would they turn it off in a commercial jet. 😃

      Yes, makes sense in something aerobatic etc, the same as caging the gyro I suppose. One has to wonder how aerobatic they thought people were going to get in a Tu154 though?! XD

      Ah, good spot! Alas, someone very inconsiderately decided to ring my doorbell on short final haha (so much for a sterile cockpit. . .), so I had to do a bit of repositioning and go again. It seems something was missed during the reset! I blame the virtual flight engineer entirely of course and will be sending him straight to the chief pilots office! ; )

    I love that this sim can do all of this, cold start, auto flight engineer etc and I love that there’s simmers out there like you who do all this just as you’d have to in a real AC, but I’m one of the other kind of simmer, strap on the VR, whip out the HOTAS, start ready to fly, turn down the realism and just get in the air as quick as possible, it’s not that I can’t do the full realism, cold start, just like being in the air with no worries. Nice review

      Good stuff David! I love that the sim can do all of this stuff as well, but it’s a hobby, we should all be enjoying it in whatever way we see fit. I generally enjoy all the startup and procedures etc, sometimes maybe even as much as the flight haha, but I can totally see the appeal of just sitting back, relaxing and taking in the view - especially in MSFS. I love VR as well, that’s a whole other level of enjoyment!

      Yeah, for sure we’ll have to organise that at some point. Again though, still need to figure out carrier landings myself, before I’m in the position to be “critiquing” anyone XD
      I should have some free time at some point next month. Remind me then and we can perhaps jump on the Aerobatics server or something and go through a few things (again though, I’m no mil pilot and haven’t practiced in ages, so I’ll probably be incredibly rusty / rubbish haha).

    I've been looking forward to this one for some time. Generally speaking, I much prefer props to jets any day and am quite keen on some of the older aircraft. One of my favourite airliners is the DC-3. The idea of this DC-6 was a little scary though, it's big and it's complex and it's made by PMDG . For a "casual" flyer like me that's a hell of a combination. However, watching the video series PMDG put on their TH-cam channel put me at ease considerably and the inclusion of the auto flight engineer has definitely put this aeroplane in reach of someone like me. I think the price is very reasonable considering you get all the bells and whistles of PMDG and compare it to the prices of some utter crap currently being sold by other so called developers. Thankyou for your review, excellent as usual. It has confirmed my own thoughts and my PMDG DC-6 is currently downloading.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ah wonderful, glad you picked it up! I’m sure you will love it if you’re into your old props etc. Probably as close as most of us will ever get to flying one of these things. . .
      The Auto Flight Engineer is a superb feature! Makes the aircraft eminently more accessible as you say (and a brilliant move on PMDGs part to create a tutorial series as well). I don’t just see it as a tool for beginners either; I think I will continue to use it, even once I become more familiar with the aircraft. Ultimately these big old birds were not meant to be flown single crew.
      Price wise, it’s excellent value for money! You could have this, or the two Captainsim 777s. It’s a no brainier in my opinion (I wanted to say that during the review, but didn’t think it was a very “constructive” comment haha).
      Hope you’re enjoying the old gal. Thanks as ever. Happy flying! : )

    My best experiences in FSX were with A2A aircraft. I loved the Stratocruiser though it was certainly a handful to try to fly without help. My most memorable experience was taking the A2A P-47 Razorback on a round the world trip, no repairs, only refueling, keeping all the systems in check not stressing the airplane. There were some hiccups along the way such as my pilot blacking out from lack of oxygen (was not aware how detailed and deep the simulation was) and almost running out of fuel a few times but that's all part of the fun. Mainly flying VFR, minimal planning, always looking for suitable airfields at the last minute which made it more interesting and rewarded with some added exploration. I'm very looking forward to a similar endeavor on this sim so I'm hoping more add ons like this may come out.

      Likewise TGUYB!
      As I think I mentioned previously, I'm really hoping we'll see plenty of MSFS addons from A2A. I always wanted to try the Stratocruiser, but alas I never had the money at the time. . .
      I had a very similar experience myself actually; I took the A2A T6 Texan on an around the world trip. I planned things out and made strategic repairs along the way, but otherwise much the same as yourself. I used ortho scenery for the whole route, so it was great to get a feel for the different parts of the planet as I went. It was quite a momentous undertaking all in all - took me 1 year almost to the day to complete and I really enjoyed it. Definitely had one or two close calls along the way as well though haha. Everts air cargo! We used to have everts DC-6 fly out to deliver lumber, four wheelers, pipes, and much more to Keyes Point AK. What a massive bird to be landing on that dirt strip. Also had C-46 commandos deliver fuel from everts. The two C-46's were "Hot Stuff" and "Salmon Ella." Now that's a plane I'd like to see in the sim. Love the video.

    Great review for a great aircraft. The other plane that I would add as a system intensive plane is the milviz fg-1d corsair. They did to warbirds what JustFlight did to GA and PMDG did to airliners. I'm not a huge jet fan, but I love propellers and this aircraft is going to be fun to fly.

    Nice review and very objective (as always)! As you said, it isn’t perfect, but despite a few minor things, this is an outstanding addition to MSFS if you are interested in classic aircraft from a bygone era. I find aircraft like this far more interesting than modern jet aircraft (too much like work).. having to look after the engines (no FADEC to protect them), having to really think ahead about the descent profile etc etc.

    Great review agree ref the FPS hit I was getting around 28 in various phases of flight but did see 23-25 at times, the immersion is brilliant great to have a Flt eng to manage systems flight deck environment and instruments excellent in my view, such a joy to fly plan on watching the tutorials again to improve my input in all phases of operation. Superb presentation the lesson for me don’t get near stall speed! Thanks and stay safe all. Cheers for now Charlie.

      Yeah, it’s a bit of a frame hog, but it’s worth taking the hit in my opinion (and yours too by the sounds of it). The Auto Flight Engineer is a superb feature from PMDG (guess maybe you’ll be able to teach him a thing or two though haha!). Great for helping people getting up and running with the aircraft, but also a really useful tool that I could see myself continuing to use. The PMDG tutorials are top notch as well.
      I think I’ll do likewise and stay away from the stall. Obviously a good rule in general for these types of beasts, but I was still intrigued to see how it would react.

    I've been flight simming over 20 years and have never really had any interest in the big airliners, I'm generally more of a GA, vintage and warbird kinda guy with my flights being generally not much longer than an hour. But after watching the tutorial videos PMDG put out for this bird I was really quite interested but I assumed the price would be around 50-60 quid,. So when it was released and I saw it cost 'only' £40 I thought why the hell not? and bought it. I was away for most the weekend so no chance to fly, did have time to read through most of the 333 page pdf manual though and now I know way more than I wanted to about DC-6 hydraulic, electrical, fuel and oil systems heh. And now I'm home I've been watching your review videos of this and the Dorand instead! I'll take her for a spin tomorrow and am quite looking forward to it especially after watching your video. Good stuff and a nice flight. Cheers

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I think most people were pleasantly surprised by the price (myself included). Fair play to PMDG! Maybe they see it as some kind of a gateway drug for their later products haha. Either way, I think the aircraft is actually very good value for money.
      Sounds like you were well and truly prepared for your first flight then! Have you taken her up yet? Certainly can’t fault you for watching my videos first mind you, thanks ; )
      I’ve flown it every day since I picked it up. Certainly something a little different and a really nice challenge! Not had a dull flight yet.

    • @Vigulfr
      @Vigulfr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations yeah took her up for a couple of flights (3 if you count my first attempt where I got a CTD as I forgot to turn off multiplayer). Followed the first tutorial flight and even despite my prior reading I still found it quite a handful and let's just say the first landing didn't go as planned. 2nd attempt went better and I really enjoyed it.
      Even with the AFE she can be quite a handful and I enjoy the challenge. It might take a while before I feel comfortable enough to enable some of those realism settings and do some more manual stuff without the AFE though. Quite a bit different from what I'm used to.
      I had to lower my graphical settings a bit to get a decent frame rate and then the tutorial flight ending at Seattle didn't help as that airport and city likes to destroy my FPS even more. Think I was down to 15fps at some points on final which made things more interesting! Think I might just disable photogrammetry as it tanks my FPS most times and half the time doesn't even look that good anyway.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great! Yeah, it’s defiantly a bit of a learning curve initially and certainly a nice challenge as you say. I think a lot of people consider using the AFE “cheating” (myself included initially), but actually it’s more true to life of how the aircraft should be operated, so I’ve decided I’m not going to make him redundant after all ; )
      I might have to do the same as you and tone the graphics down unfortunately. FPS hasn’t been stellar and I’ve even been getting some long pauses, which I’ve never experienced in the sim before. Ultimately I think it’s getting close to the time for another system upgrade XD
      Haha, well I gave up on photogrammetry right after the first world update. It’s always looked rubbish on my system and tanks my performance. I don’t find myself missing it all that much and just occasionally turn it on when I want to explore a specific city etc.
      Happy flying! : )

    Understand the younger generation love the Raptors/F-35s, the airliners where it resembles a old arcade.
    I learned and later flew the aircraft where every function had a gauge or a switch. Maybe 2. My fav was the 727 that when all 3 crew were in unison she was a charm to fly. BTW- That plane and others handle totally different with reduced graphics and 40- 60 fps. This is like sliding a wet box across concrete.

    Don't think that the low res textures and occasional 2 D-ish looking parts are because PMDG lacks the ability or know how to make them look stellar or it was an oversite. It was deliberate and a choice. They're capable of making a window with scratches and dust and fingerprints that can only be seen in certain lighting conditions, like the sun hitting them at just the right angle. I own 6 PMDG aircraft (not this one yet) for FSX and notice little details even to this day that I never have seen. Every product is a study level sim that can immerse even the most hardcore simmer for years. I still fly the PMDG MD-11 and notice a smudge on the MFD I never saw before, or a sound fx that I noticed when in certain conditions. It's amazing. Same with the 737-800. Brilliant. Nice review. I will make this my next purchase for sure!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi VH,
      Well indeed, I quite agree with you and that was why I was surprised to see such details. I presume it was done to save fps (I think I made mention of this during the video), but it wasn't what I was expecting from PMDG. If I recall correctly, the window modelling was subsequently addressed, so it obviously wasn't a completely undue criticism at any rate.
      If you're a fan of PMDG's products in FSX, then I'm sure you will love this one also. The DC-6 is still one of my favourites!
      I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Thanks for watching and all the best! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations I think the B377 looks a bit odd.
      The nose looks really squished.
      If I was in your position I wouldn't buy it either though. Unfortunately I can't really imagine it making it into MSFS2020.
      Old airliners don't seem to be that popular.

As you say though, it’s a pretty niche aircraft to say the least, so I can’t imagine anyone will be rushing to make one (I’d only be interested in it if it was study level at any rate).

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations From the inside the cockpit must definitely be nice. I like that cockpit style as well (e.g. old WW2 bombers), however it just doesn't work B377.
      Well that's just my opinion though.

    Great vid, shows off the plane's features, both strengths and weaknesses nicely. "The aircraft really feels alive, very much to the same degree as most A2A aircraft do." Probably the best compliment you could have given it ;).
    I don't mean to be nitpicky, but it kind of bugs me that PMDG's startup procedure for this plane is wrong. The proper way to start a radial is to engage the starter with mixture at cut-off and magnetos off, then switch these on *after* you've counted 12 (6, howevermany) blades. The reason being, if one of the lower cylinders has oil in the combustion chamber and the engine fires, you'll break a rod or blow the cylinder apart or otherwise do unspeakable damage to it. I suppose there must be some limitation in the sim that forced them to do it this way?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much!
      Comparing anything with an A2A product is certainly high praise in my estimations. I would say though that A2A still hold the upper hand in this regard. The engines in particular on the DC-6, don't feel quite as much like working pieces of machinery as an A2A engine generally does.
      Haha I don't consider it nitpicky, if the sequence is incorrect, then I think that's noteworthy on an aircraft of this price / in this bracket. Interesting point you raise then. I have no experience with radial engines myself, but I'm familiar with hydraulic lock as a principle and what you're saying makes sense (indeed on the A2A Texan, I recall starting the engine with the mags off). In this vid I simply followed the startup process as given by PMDG in their tutorial videos.
      I don't believe it would be a sim limitation. It's certainly possible to start with the mixture in Idle Cut-Off, as this is possible on the MILVIZ Corsair; maybe there is an issue with the mags. There must be a reason. Rob from PMDG apparently flies DC-3s, so he must be more than familiar with the real world procedures.
      I will have to try starting an engine using the method you mentioned. It will be interesting to see the results!
      Thanks very much for your feedback, much appreciated! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. All the best! : )

      Yeah, it’s certainly not friendly on the FPS. It would a be a struggle if you’re a bit marginal on the frame rate already. I only run the sim in 1080p and on “High” and I was just about managing 30 FPS for most of the trip (less in certain areas). I’m not too bothered by FPS per se, but when I start to see stuttering, that really ruins it for me. If you do pick it up and you can get it to run ok, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

      That’s true. . . I did try and show the start from the cockpit window, but didn’t get a very good angle did I. Problem is I’m only familiar with the Drone Cam (and not whatever the other one is called). Obviously you can’t operate the aircraft controls from the Drone Cam, so it would mean rapidly switching between internal and external views, which I try and avoid doing as I like everything to be nice and smooth etc in my videos (as much as I can manage anyway). You’re not wrong though. I’ll have to see if I can figure the other camera out and maybe next time I’ll just get some external footage, even if it’s filmed from a different startup etc. Not that it’s PMDGs fault, but those engines really need some smoke!

    I believe the reason the old radios are not functional is because the Freq they are capable of tuning do not match modern ADF/VOR parameters so they would be useless and in violation of most Aviation authority's regulations.. I believe Roger touched on this in one of his videos that all the DC-6's still have them installed to maintain Quadrant stability, also would cost a fortune to get them removed safely.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah ok Dave, thanks for the explanation! My bad then. I did hear Rob mention that the radios are somewhat integral and are left in due to cost, but I didn’t realise they were more or less useless by modern standards. I had assumed they were just “clunky” to use compared with something like the Bendix and so generally other units were retrofitted.

      Yep, you can do all of that no problem with the GNS. The GNS is just the default unit (so all the same functionality you’ll be used to) and you can have the aircraft / gyropilot track the GPS flight plan, as opposed to VOR Radials etc. That’s cheating of course though! : P
      The Gyropilot whilst archaic, is actually decently capable. The only thing it won’t do is follow a heading for you (you can only control bank angle instead). It does take a little bit of getting used to if course.

      Sorry, that was probably a bit misleading on my part. I’d actually tried a run up of engine 3 previously, just to make sure I had some idea of what I was doing before recording etc. The mixture was then left in the wrong position by the inept monkey in the left seat haha.
      The engines can be tricky to start with realism turned on. Are you sure you’re setting the mixture to Auto Rich (as opposed to Auto Lean)? From memory;
      Mixture = Auto Rich
      Fuel Boost Pump = Low
      Igniters = ON
      Engine Selector = Set to desired engine
      Starter = Engage (wait for 12 blades call from FE)
      Boost Coil = ON
      Primer = ON
      That should be all the steps to get the things fired up. They don’t always go on the first attempt though. Sometimes you have to coax them into life by nursing the throttle a little bit as well.

      Thanks very much Sean, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
      My understanding, is that the DC6 will return to the Xbox, once the console’s WASM coding issues have been sorted out. This issue should already have been corrected at this point, but has unfortunately been pushed back to a later sim update. As things stand at the moment, I believe the WASM issue should be corrected with either SU12 / SU13, so expect to see the DC6 some time thereafter.
      I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

      Yeah, a lot of people seem, keen for a Super Constellation! I guess we might see A2As Constellation at some point (and I think I saw another developer making one for MSFS as well). I’d be more keen for the A2A B377 to make a comeback personally, but I seem to be verrrry much in the minority on that one haha (vs the Constellation).

    Well, wasn't that worth waiting for! And, an excellent, fair and accurate review. I think that so far, this is the ultimate realisation of the sim, and perhaps some of the shortcomings of the aircraft, few as they are, are a result really, of the limitatins of the sim at this stage, and can be updated and patched out in the future. It's over to A2A now, to see what they can do!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely John! Good things come to those who wait. . .
      This is why PMDG et al have been so successful over the years though. They don’t rush things. They wait until it’s done and done right. Completely agree with you, this must be stretching the sim to its limits; most omissions (lack of engine smoke for example) are most likely sim limitations over aircraft ones.
      As I mentioned during the review; for me A2A have always been the kings of making an aircraft feel “alive”, but the DC6 is nearly every bit as good. I wouldn’t have chosen an Aerostar personally, but I’m still very excited to see what A2A bring. The future is certainly looking bright for flight simulation!
      Glad you enjoyed the review. Thanks and all the best! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations I agree about the choice of the Aerostar as the first release, although after its forced-landing and reduction to spares, I wonder if they'll perservere. I understand a Comanche is also in the works. But, being an old aircraft kinda guy, I'll probably pass. Looking forward to Aeroplane Heaven's DC-3. and, praying that Manfred Jahn is working on his stunning C-47 for MSFS.

      Yikes. I’d heard they had to land it with the gear up. Didn’t realise the damage was that bad! Hopefully they can figure things out and move on. Main thing is everyone was ok I suppose.
      Yeah, I tend to prefer a more classical touch myself as well. Whilst I did enjoy some of their GA stuff, I’ve got my fingers crossed we’ll see the Spit and the Texan back up in the virtual skies! A DC3 would certainly be very welcome as well (although the DC6 is keeping me very happy for the moment!). The MJ C47 would be wonderful to see back in the air as well.

    Lovely video. Not sure it will run too well with my GTX1070 but will give it a whirl. Not too fussed about mega FPS, if it gives 25 to 30fps I’ll be happy.
    Edit, just to confirm on this. Just been for a short flight from Brize Norton to Gloucester and it’s absolutely fine. Even in VR (which is fab) there’s perhaps only a slight degradation in performance and for me it’s perfectly acceptable. Extremely pleased with it.

      That’s great to hear. I would have said 25fps was probably achievable on a 1070, but I’m amazed you’ve got it up and running in VR as well haha! My system really doesn’t seem to like MSFS in VR for some reason; it’s always a bit of a slideshow and a stutter-fest (where as most other sims are ok).

      I'm glad to hear you say that, as I also run VR on a 1070. How's the cockpit with the 3D cursor in VR? Are the click-spots decent, or a bit fiddly?

    • @markscars1069
      @markscars1069 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jasonwebb71 Getting at the carb temp levers is a bit fiddly (the gear control gets in the way) and the gyro control needs careful adjustment (you’ll need to lean over to check it’s back in the neutral position, so make sure there’s plenty of room around your physical space). Plus the zoom function is a little urgent and zooms you RIGHT in. But nitpicking really, it’s an excellent experience.

    • @jasonwebb71
      @jasonwebb71 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markscars1069 Thanks. Yeah, I've got plenty of space to lean, so I might get on okay. I'll have to mull this one over and maybe try to watch a VR review before making a final decision, as I was a bit disappointed that the CRJ700 was awkward for me in VR. It kind of put me off attempting to fly anything too complex in MSFS. I leave complex aircraft for X-plane where I can use controllers.
