    These tests mean nothing just a FYI. Nobody ever tests in an area that is loaded with electronics, wifi signals and lighting, It would be more realistic. Most units will past any test in a open field with nothing in it. Just a heads up for anyone looking for a wireless unit.

    Thanks to Shure for supporting KDH’s channel by sending him a wireless unit for us to check out! I’ve heard this unit is incredible, and it’s nice to know it had the KDH stamp of approval. Feel free to send KDH more free Shure gear to let him check out (and maybe even give away to us? 😬🙏🏻🤞🏻)!

    Im a touring musician from the U.S. (currently on tour in Europe) and this is my second tour using this wireless system and i’ve had no issues at all with it. I don’t use a patch bay so i personally have never had any issues with sound while tuning. I’d recommend this to anyone looking into getting a wireless system. Loved the review KDH!

    They have utterly nailed it. One thing to say, I know you called it out but the real enemy of your wireless pack isn't distance, but other wireless systems.
    Three weeks ago I was on stage in Thurles with my Line 6 G50 and it was utterly creased by a HDMI transmitter so one express delivery from Thomann and I had it in time for a fairly ginormous stage at Forever Young in Kildare.
    I had to compete with a gazillion smartphones, stage cameras with transmitters, 9 wireless mics, other instrument wireless and I left my iPhone in my back pocket. It just kept going. The battery is incredible. I was getting a bit conscious about my environmental footprint.
    I don't have to spend ages setting it up looking for bandwidth and the tuner is super handy. It's utter win.
    I'm actually very surprised at Line 6. They bought a company that led in this space and haven't updated their line is a very long time.
    This is the only show in town for working guitarists right now.

      That is why the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands are not used in professional settings. You'll only see VHF and UHF there and for events with a lot of wireless, there will often be an RF coordinator to make sure your guitar doesn't use the same exact frequency as another band's microphone or the wireless video transmission by the camera man. But at events with not enough wireless transmission by a large enough number of different groups to warrant an RF coordinator, problems can still occur, so talking to the other people using wireless there is key.

    10:36 I stay in Edinburgh and had to put up with The Lumineers playing at the castle a few weeks back. They were tuning up every couple of songs and I could hear it from a mile away.
    To be fair it sounded better than any of their songs.

    One thing to note about all the wireless systems using 2,4 GHz frequencies is that the actual frequency bandwidth for each of the channels is 22 MHz. For example the frequency for channel 6 is 2,437 GHz but because the bandwidth is 22 MHz the actual frequency is actually 2,425-2,449 GHz, spreading 11 MHz to both sides. Because of this some channels will clash with each other. With channel 6 it would share frequencies with channels 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. To minimize the risk of interference with other wireless units on stage, the only channels you could use are channels 1, 6, and 11. If your band has 2 guitars and a bass all on 2,4 GHz systems you'd be able to get by with minimal risk of interference but if there's any more wireless systems like an acoustic guitar or in-ear monitor systems using 2,4 GHz you'd have guaranteed interference problems. Also wifi routers and other devices using 2,4 GHz in the venues can cause interference.
    With the added benefit of the 5.8 GHz range you'd have more options since the "frequency spill" isn't as much of a problem allowing more than just 3 channels to be used. And if you still somehow have problems you can use the scan feature on the Shure unit to quickly find a new better channel.
    As for the channel groups on the GLXD16+, according to Shure group 1 is best if 1-2 systems are used and group 2 is best if 2-5 systems are used. Group 3 is best if used in entirely wifi free space/area.
    Because of the option to use both 2,4 and 5,8 GHz I think the GLXD16+ is the best wireless unit using the 2,4 GHz and 5,8 GHz frequencies. Just keep it away from wifi routers.

    • @HCkev
      @HCkev ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't have to select a frequency. The pedal will find the best frequency automatically. I own the previous version (only 2.4GHz) and in my previous band, the other guitarist also had the same unit. Never had any problem. The two units selected different channels (11 and 6 from what I remember). It is really plug and play.

    • @riversplit8206
      @riversplit8206 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I said, the pedal will do a quick scan for the best frequency. What I said in the original comment about frequencies still applies to every system from every manufacturer using 2,4 GHz.

  • @Alex_Martz
    @Alex_Martz ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The test should be done in an environment that mimics a real scenario: in a stage with LOTS of RF interference like in-ears, radio mics, LED screen, WiFI routers, phones, etc. That's the important thing!, also, a long range like the one shown here means nothing unless you're someone who has a stage tech that changes your pedals and presets for you, like a class A act but in that case that person already has the budget for a more pro wireless unit!, also, most guitar players are glued to their big pedalboards so there's not much need for a long range, I'm more interested on how this affects latency, frequency response and dynamic range, if you plug your guitar with a cable into a Fuzz it'll sound totally different that plugging into the fuzz with this or with a buffered pedal before for example

    "Oh yeah... we've definitely outdone most stages at this point" (aka, auditoriums) lol... The point about the width on the pedalboard (with top mounted jacks) was brilliant. And yeah, the input jack is great as well. I am sold. That is what I call an excellent review. And I'm glad you didn't slip on dog poo going across the lawn. Oh, and the issue with the wireless -or- wired conundrum is to have a switch that is a quick tap to alternate wired/wireless and a 2-3 sec hold for tuner mode. Thanks for your efforts and thoughts.

    Glad you liked it. I had the prior Gen for years. I had to replace one battery. After 3 years in a transmitter. I did upgrade to the new one and sold the old one to the other guitaist in the band.
    One thing you didn't mention you can have multiple transmitters paired with one pedal. Only one can be active at a time but make for great fast guitar switching. Power off the one your wearing. Grab other guitar flick the power button and your now running with new guitar.
    My live rig is kemper stage mounted to a Temple audio pedal board. This sits on there as well. I have a chioks power supply with also has USB ports. I can charge the transmitters if needed. I have everything wired with the power ports on the temple audio and a metal flight case. Easiest travel rig I have ever had. The flight case has wheels I have a double guitar gig bag. I can go from gig to show in one trip from car.
    Also not sure about comments about noise and so on. I have never had an issue. I play and live in a metropolitan area in the US. Have played many street festivals with this outside. The latest one was 5k people watching us but was huge festival covering 10 city blocks. 8 stages all performing. Noisy bars with bad wiring. Never an issue.

    As someone who bought the previous version (GLXD16) just 4-5 years ago, I'm absolutely pissed that they didn't made the new version compatible with the old one.
    A few months ago I was looking to buy a second bodypack in order to more easily switch between guitars during gigs(and also, always good to have a backup, although I bring a 25ft cable just in case), and realized it has been discontinued, which was very disappointing since I specifically spent more money on a Shure wireless rather than a smaller brand to ensure it would be supported for a long time. Guess I was wrong...
    I've learned that an updated version was coming and had hope that I could buy the new bodypack and it would work with the GLXD6. Nope. If I want a second body pack, either I need to find one used (they're nowhere to be found on the used maket, unless you want to pay as much for a used bodypack than you paid for the whole kit brand new...), or buy a completely new wireless system... Thanks, Shure.... 😑 Planned obsolescence at its best.
    I mean, I get that the new one is dual band and not the previous one, but still, there is absolutely no reason why it couldn't just fallback using only 2.4GHz when paired with the older pedal. The technology they're using isn't much different than Wi-Fi... Imagine if you bought a brand new router and then your 3 years old tablet wouldn't connect to because it doesn't support WiFi 6... That's ridiculous. They clearly did this so you buy the whole thing all over again and I feel betrayed as a customer, especially since I have absolutely no reason to upgrade to the new version, it always worked flawlessly.

    How do they detect the IN jack connection on the Sure? Do they perhaps use a stereo female IN jack and plugging in a mono jack cable shorts the Right to Ground to detect an IN cable is connected. If so, if your board has a stereo patch, just connect that with a stereo cable so you don't complete the circuit until you connect a mono jack cable to your board. I don't know the Sure unit, so this is just a guess.

  • @MarcG28
    @MarcG28 ปีที่แล้ว

    Getting around the patch bay situation can be easy if your board can be arranged to suit. I had the same situation when I got my Boss WL-50 and all I did was position the receiver on my board so that the wired input was accessible if I needed to use it and used that as my wired input option to my board instead of my patch bay..... Granted that may not work for everyone with their pedal board layouts but it really can be a simple work around

  • @AnimalJohn85

    A press and hold on the footswitch to switch between wired/wireless would be your best bet. That way you still get the tuner/mute functionality but can switch between without having to fart about with the unit itself :)

    The range test made me chuckle as it reminded me of a story I heard about a singer using a wireless system and walking out through the audience in a natural bowl and as he was hearing the band from some way away he was singing a second or two behind the band!! For those asking about using it where there is loads of different radio signals in the immediate area - it works great. I have used even a cheaper Nux wireless unit (5 GHz) in an area that was highly populated and with plenty of cellphones, wifi routers, Bluetooth signals, etc. and had no issues. The Shure unit is far more robust than the cheaper non-pro units - it is going to be very rare that you get any interference because it switches channels to keep that from happening. As far as how these sound - you are not going to notice any difference between the wireless and a cable. Some might claim "but latency" - it is just has never been an issue in my experience. Certainly if you get really far away from the receiver you are going to increase your latency but by the time you would get far enough to notice the signal will drop out. Wireless is a solid technology - just look at how many big bands you see using wireless when you go to a concert.

    • @Bob-of-Zoid
      @Bob-of-Zoid ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Latency: People still don't understand that all waves on the electromagnetic spectrum, so both radio and electrical travel at the speed of light! The reason computers have latency is because they do crap loads of different things and so they get qued and have to wait their turn, which can be micro to milliseconds, a wireless unit doesn't process much at all, nor does most audio circuitry do anything to the sound at all, unless deliberately and for a reason.

    • @HCkev
      @HCkev ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There will be a slight difference between the wireless and say, a 20ft cable. The 20ft cable will have some singal loss (slight treble loss), the wireless won't, because it's essentially as if you plugged your guitar to your pedalboad with a very short 2ft cable

      Just for the record, this unit changes my tone going into a Helix into FRFR speakers QUITE dramatically. Very pronounced high end frequencies. I've had to go through every preset to work with a wireless unit vs. a 10'+ cable as I used before. Not the fault of this particular system per se, but just any wireless system I'm sure. Love everything about this system otherwise.

    • @DanielBobke
      @DanielBobke 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BradleyLivestreams Interesting...I have never noted any differences in tone related to wireless vs. cable. If there are any differences, they are far too subtle for my ears! I have used them both with a real amp and with plug-ins - no noticeable difference.

  • @rikkifknrobin

    One suggestion I could make for anyone trying to do the patch bay idea with this is running the output of the wireless into the input of the patch bay. No it’s not exactly what you want with a patch bay, but it is a worthwhile idea

I only paid $80 for 2 of the Getaria 5.8 systems and I buy pretty much any of the AKG wireless bug systems I don't have the frequency of. I think I have 7 of those each different frequency. I've paid less for these used than my brother's Shure wireless mic system he bought 15 yrs ago. For my board I love having it up where I can quickly adjust whatever pedal I'm messing with. No bending over trying to see exactly where each knob is. Best way to really learn my board. Only connection is the electric underneath. Set up on desk next to notebook. Write down what you learn.

    I wonder about digital radios for this application. Sure they reject dropouts better than an analog radio, but at the cost of latency. Also you have to resolve the difference in sample clocks between the TX and RX which would require some sort of asynchronous sample rate conversion and that can cause all kinds of artifacts if not done right. I would not mind testing one of these on my free pedal test software to uncover any issues.

    • @HCkev

      I never noticed any sound quality degradation. However, when you get out of range, it start cutting, and from my experience, you need to come back closer than when it started cutting for it to pick back again correctly. It seems it either work or doesn't. In comparison, when VHF/UHF wireless get out of range, it loses a lot of sound quality and barely get audible, but won't "cut" (at least from my understanding).
      That being said, you really need to go very far. With my rehearsal room, I could go outside the concrete building(the room was at the basements) and it would still work. Only when I went farther away in the parking lot it would start cutting. That was with the GLXD16, the previous version, by the way.

    These don't work well around high powered routers. Had gen 1 for ages, and returned the new one after a week due to wifi interference. Although the form factor is not as friendly, the Senn EW-D CI1 is incredible. Don't waste your money on 2.5/5ghz systems.

    Before I watch this video. lemme just say I've been trying to figure out the output impedance of this device for a while. Or rather, how well does it work with a two or three transistor fuzz pedal? Will you cover this very important issue? I'll find out in 13 minutes after I've watched the video.

      Imagine, I've got the previous version and Shure stopped making the bodypacks, and judged not profitable enough to make the new ones backward compatible with the previous ones... So if I want a second bodypack, well, I pretty need to buy the whole new wireless system all over again.

    As someone who has had poor vision basically my entire life, why not get contacts? Even if just for playing live? I've been wearing them for the last 20 years, almost. I decided to switch once i started playing live, for the exact reason that they just fly off your face. I don't think I'd ever go back to glasses.

  • @pickholder6189
    @pickholder6189 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the old one - never once let me down, so you would not use the input jack in my opinion..... I have also built on rigs I have built for other people a patch bay that has an input that goes between the wireless and first pedal (ie. when the jack goes into the patchbay it bypasses the wireless). Sadly this looses the tuner..... I guess it is a trade off ! I would only see a lead being useful if you had a wireless breakdown.
    I would recommend a spare battery. Unlike the larger 'half tack'/'third rack' size shure receivers this system (or the previous system) does not charge the battery.
    You also forgot to mention the battery life LED on the pedal.

    I used a wireless unit years ago and couldn't get on with the sound difference. Had to return to cable.

    • @KDH
      @KDH  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the length of cable you’re used to using.
      I tend to use short enough cables so I didn’t notice much change. Though if you were used to using longer cables I would assume there would be a bigger difference.

    • @HCkev
      @HCkev ปีที่แล้ว

      It's essentially like plugging your guitar to the pedalboad with a very short 2ft cable. These digital wireless don't lose sound quality, they just start cutting when you're out of range (like you've seen in the video). I assume you had a VHF wireless system, which will impact sound quality, especially if you're far from the base or are on a crowded frequency.

    Why are doing so many a range test outside with nobody around? Do a range test here where we play with the band in Manhattan with 1000+ cellphones around and hundreds of other wireless systems. I see here bands with 2.4/5.8 Ghz systems switching to cable during the first song all the time. That is why I am using a Sennheiser EW-DX. If I ever have a gig with no audience at an empty field I will maybe take a look at other systems....

    I have an old Shure Wireless which was fairly affordable 15 years ago, and it already is enough to walk out of the rehearsal room and play in the neighborhood, which is far more than any stage size i will ever play on. This new one seems to do even more, and it's more practical with these new features.

    I work in live entertainment and just a heads-up: this is not actually professional-grade equipment. Wireless equipment aimed at professionals in the event industry utilizes the UHF and VHF frequency bands because 2.4 GHz is not only crowded by electronics, but also undesirable for this application due to its high frequency and subsequent range limitations. The reason why GLXD doesn't use these frequency bands is that they're only allowed for professional use. The Shure products actual pros use are (among others) ULXD and Axient. Sennheiser is also a well-established manufacturer of professional wireless systems.

    I think it is a little lame that they have a proprietary battery instead of an 18650 but I guess I could understand the audience they're working with may not be smart enough to get good batteries from a website that isn't amazon.

    • @JessicaFEREM
      @JessicaFEREM ปีที่แล้ว

      btw amazon rechargeables in america are the best deal rn. you can get amazon rechargeables that are rebadged eneloops for $0.33 cents a bat.
      I guess if you live near an Ikea the Ladda batteries are also eneloop rebrands for similar prices.
      just remember to get a high capacity battery if the device has a high power draw and a normal battery if you're putting them in remotes. NiMH batteries can die if they sit in a drawer too long and high capacity only last like a month at a time but you get more capacity if you're using something with a high power draw.
