I like dystopian fiction, when it is done well. Here, you basically have Ayn Rand fan fiction being marketed to people who have very little understanding of the philosophy, but respond well to the conspiracy theory that the Federal government is out to get "freedom loving Americans". Separate from what I can say about Ayn Rand or the state of education in America, it is just incredible fascinating to see this union of wacky Ayn Rand anarchists and fire and brimstone, black helicopters are turning kids gay Christians.

It's not the camera, it's their incompetence. I believe the film was mostly shot using a Panasonic AF100. It's the same camera that was used to shoot the fantastic "The Raid." It's little brother-the Panasonic GH2-has been used by all kinds of indie filmmakers to great effect. Shane Caruth shot "Upstream Color" quite beautifully on a GH2.

When I was in high school, I wrote a piece of fiction that was about, basically, libertarians resisting an oppressive dictatorship. The dialogue was just as stilted and the plot lines just as implausible as in this movie.

This entire review is the perfect summary of the modern Libertarian party: a hodgepodge of people who form their moral and economic opinions based on rational thought and questioning the status quo, and edge-lords who get a sense of superiority from the obscurity of their political views and spend their every waking moment basking in how woke they are.
Also, what is Hunter Avallone doing in this movie?

isn't that like every revolutionary ideology ever?

    • @blixer8384
      @blixer8384 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

American Libertarians are anti-state capitalists who have appropriated the name from Annarcho-Communists, anarcho-syndicalists, egoists, mutalists, and other actual libertarian groups. They are not revolutionary as is evident by the fact that they almost always vote with Republicans, a conservatives party whose main priority is preserving the political and social status quo. Nor is it in any way based on rational thought as most so called libertarians labor under the delusion that one can be fiscally conservative while remaining socially progressive. Fiscal Conservatism cannot be divorced from social conservatism, any more than the body can be divorced from the head.

    • @christhornycroft3686
      @christhornycroft3686 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@blixer8384libertarianism internationally originally came about as a left wing ideology (anarchist left). It’s only in America that it’s considered right wing or conservative. Noam Chomsky would be considered libertarian in most countries, not libertarian socialist or shockingly, communist like he is in America. American politics is an anomaly. It’s the exception, not the rule, since practically every industrialized country in the world has some form of single payer healthcare system. I find Americans talk about politics very differently than most people in other countries. They fear socialism and think it’s synonymous with communism, or that a country like Canada is socialist, even though we have private companies like they do. Even Bernie Sanders isn’t a socialist like he claims to be. Except for free college, he’s right of 80% of Canada’s politicians. Libertarianism as a concept is completely different from libertarianism in the rest of the world. It’s almost anarchism. As if corporations don’t have enough power. Sure, governments can perpetuate that power by allowing them to buy politicians, but any time you have a system where the market isn’t regulated, control goes to the highest bidders and those people won’t care about anyone else unless they have to. They could solve poverty if they wanted to but they won’t. They’re too busy buying a new yacht and blaming poor people for being poor.

I'm really confused who i'm supposed to see as the villain in this movie...
    like, in the mall scene:
    - not being a dick to mexicans: seems like a good idea to me,
    - legal cannabis: i've never done drugs myself, (which is weird, because i'm a Dutch College student. You would think i would have, if even by accident :P,) but if you want to smoke weed, and if you're a responsable adult, i'm not gonna stop you.
    - woman have the right to own their own body: totally agree! Go Feminism! (You know... before feminist meant `all men are pigs', but back when it still meant `woman should get the same rights as men, and should be treated as equals')
    - sell drugs to 11 year olds: ... wait what? No, let's not do that, that's a terrible idea!
    - school shooting simulator: uhm........ what?
    - let's sell nukes! : no, no, no! Only reasonable, calm, intelligent levelheaded people, should own nukes. You know, people who will be very hesitant, and will explore any alternitave option before using them. Like the president! Oh, wait...... :(
i'm really confused... are libertarians the evil ones in this movie, or the guys i'm supposed to agree with, or both, or neither?

The film -- based on a novel -- is advocating anarchy. Basically, what people with fancy degrees would probably called "anarcho-capitalists", which is very closely connected to the philosophy created by Ayn Rand. It is aIts somewhat questionable what the age of consent would be in an anarchist society. Theoretically, their may or may not be professional law enforcement and an independent judicial system in an anarchist society. I mention this because its something I pointed out to a libertarian friend of mine...... Today, in America the age of consent is 18 -- for federal law -- and when it is a state matter it ranges from like, 15 - 18....although that assumes that the u.s. supreme court case law is still relevant

So, Colorado Springs was actually a bit of a libertarian paradise for a while. There was a law passed called TABOR, which basically said every tax bill needed to specifically and singularly voted on, and no tax raises were allowed without a unanimous vote. So because of that, we couldn't afford to light all our street lights. They left it up to the individual neighborhoods/individuals to pay the bill if they wanted the lights to be turned on. You know what happened? People stole the copper wiring out of the lights. Nobody wants to pay for lights. But you know what pays for lights? TAAAAXXXEEEES.

What is even going on with this movie?? Just what? The plot is disfigured and there's and impenetrable wall of jargon?? Some background would have been nice. xD The review is great though. I enjoyed your comments a lot, especially the simple explanations on economics.

Many of the greatest action heroes have names that start with "J."
The three you listed, Jason Borne, James Bond, and Jack Reacher, are just the tip of the iceberg.
John Connor, John McClane, John Rambo, John Shaft, John Wick, Jack Ryan, Jackie Brown, James Kirk, Judge Dredd, etc.

Assuming of course the seller doesn't own a monopoly on six packs. And if their's no government, than their's no laws, meaning no anti-monopoly laws. It also means no murder laws so the guy could just kill the seller and take his product.

Thanks for the review. Thirty-eight minutes to review my movie. Quite an honor.
For anyone who actually wants to watch my movie instead of substituting any reviewer's judgment for their own it's streaming on Amazon Video/Amazon Prime, streaming on iTunes, and currently playing on several Roku channels. Or you can get the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with the extra features. And if your 5.1 audio setup is so incompetently installed that the music channels are louder than the center dialogue channel -- as Kevin's appears to be -- pick the 2-channel-stereo option from the Blu-ray or DVD set-up menu.
One heads up. There are about two or three dozen misrepresentations about the movie's content -- plot, characters, and production methods -- in Kevin's review. Enjoy finding them.
Find my TH-cam channel, Google me to find my blogs, and look at my Amazon author's page for my novels, short stories, and other books.
There's also a free PDF edition of the original Alongside Night novel the movie is based on available at AlongsideNight dot net or on Amazon as Kindle or paperback.

"Congress shall make no law" comes from an actual occurrence at a Libertarian Convention.
Milton Friedman had given a talk, and in the Q&A he was asked what single change he would make to the U.S. Constitution if it were in his power. He said that was an excellent question, and thinking on his feel, he replied, "Congress shall make no law.....(pondering)...." One conventioneer jumped up applauding, and was quickly joined by a bunch of people. Funny story.

Great review, as always. My theory on the bikini girl is that she's the girl from the school in the beginning but the actress bailed halfway through filming. Anyway, I just have a question. You said you watched this at least four times, and that's just ridiculous. Are you watching any good movies as well, Christian or otherwise???

Ashley Elliott I'm sure he watches plenty of good movies, but to make a good review it would probably be beneficial to watch it multiple times, especially when it is a confusing movie like this one, where you literally have no clue what is going on.

I am not a strong lover of capitalism system nor do I think we should just go full socialism. If anything is going to work we want a balance.

Girl InaHat The Closest thing to that would be Nordic Socialism/Capitalism also refereed to as Social Democracy. Which has the Social Welfare that Socialism preaches, but rarely actually implements, and allows for free-markets to allow. While I often describe myself as a socialist I don’t believe in eliminating all private property. But I do believe that some industries should have public option (health care) and some industries should never be private under any circumstances (private prisons are an affront to human decency, and private police forces are just asking for trouble)

    • @karenkordes2210

I did research, and only ONE composer that was part of this film was connected to big budget films (dark knight and birdman). And the only well known thing the director has created is the twilight zone reboot series. I did notice some of the actors were part of big budget projects (some of them as extras, of course). Just thought it was interesting how the director hyped the film. great video tho
