A lot of anime in general, while not Christian*, has Christian themes. One Piece, for example, has loyalty, friendship and teamwork-- it's based on a shonen (boy's) manga, which generally has lots of these themes. *Christianity is not a majority religion in Japan, so it's no surprise that if you were to search for expressly Christian themes in most anime, you'd come up empty. That being said, the Roman Catholics did give them tempura.

My god, someone else has seen Time Changer, The only movie that left me laid up in bed for two weeks afterwards because it had frozen my lower spinal cord and vocal chords from its sheer mediocrity?
Not gonna lie. I haven't seen this movie, but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed your review WAY more than I would have enjoyed the actual film. Great work, Kevin! There are many movies whose message I may not 100% agree with, but which succeed mainly because of AMAZING screen writing. *Distractedly goes and watches "V for Vendetta"*
Great review as usual! I work in full time ministry and anytime I ever dare say I'm not a huge fan of these PureFlix movies you'd think I just denounced my faith right there on the spot. They (church people) just don't seem to realize that they're being sold to, be it little plastic crosses with tracts or small group curriculum.
Well, at least we can say that this movie is... somewhat better than _God's Not Dead._ I haven't even seen _Crash_ yet and I knew that this movie was ripping it off. But that ending though. I mean, people make fun of _Return of the King_ for having a really long ending; at least that didn't have a poorly-delivered voiceover monologue for its entirety.
Wait, is that Madison Pettis? She was in a Christian movie? Do you know what this means?! Do You Believe? is a spin-off of the greatest anime of all time!
"Is he listening to Adventures in Odyssey's Sergeant York?" Eee, sometimes it doesn't take much for you to make me happy! (It just takes hours of scripting, filming and editing. Yeah.)
I haven't seen this movie, but I think the biggest thing I would say about it, if I took the time to watch it and then made my own review, is that, giving like all the characters little crosses (or big crosses) feels like its trying to be symbolic. But its not symbolism. Its just kind of literally a cross. Thats not symbolism thats just giving all the characters the same prop. What. Why can't Christian films at least try to be subtle?
Why can't more Christian films be more subtle? +Joe Repp Because my mom likes them. I think people in my moms demographic really like these kinds of movies. I don't know if there just accustom to bad, on the nose tv shows. Or if they just have no tastes. Or Evan if it's because they view the movie with Christian goggles. The sad part is that there are good, subtle, Christian movies out there. But they don't get the press or the views.
***** Granite flats: It's a tv series. I love it. But the plot is a bit hard to explain. Mainly because there's a new one every season. But I like that. Dancer and the Dame: Not great, but for a PureFlix movie, its a 10. The only PureFlix movie that I know of that practices subtlety. 40 minutes in, I was wondering when the preaching was going to start. There was a message that you get in the end. But it was not thrown in my face. Confessions of a prodigal son: This one I rather liked. It could be a little boring, which is what my parents thought. But I think it has great camera work. And the story flowed pretty well. Good use of flash backs. But it is a low budget film. At least it looked like it, But not in a bad way. For example, in the middle, there a dead pixel. :) All of these are on netflix. Which is how I find them. Netflix is pretty good on recommendations.
The way most Christian films portray non-believers reminds me of how Stephen King portrays Christians in some of his novels. Just a bunch of evil, angry, curmudgeons, who are constantly angry at people who believe differently.
Really enjoyed this! From a technical production side, it looks like the movie was actually pretty good. It's the writing that's just awful. If they'd use that 64 million to hire some decent writers and actors, this could actually be something. Probably won't happen though. I do think you were a bit harsh on the filmmakers though... I think the people who made the movie had good enough intentions, they just suck at making movies. That said, I do think that the marketing team, and Pureflix as a company, does deserve every bit of criticism you dished out.
I get the feeling like most people who work on these films think like me, but they also have families to feed. This is the type of movie that pays the bills, so this is what they make. That's fine. My point is, 1. The risk you take when you make a movie like that is, you're going to get criticized for it. 2. Why do we keep making this kind of movie a viable investment for the film makers? Maybe I've just worked in the industry too long, but I've come to realize, for everyone who works on movies like this, it's just a job. It's not out of a passion to change the world. There is nothing wrong with going into that kind of career. I make videos for my job from time to time, that I know I wouldn't make other wise.
Wow, I mostly agree with both of you in this discussion. I actually liked _God's Not Dead_, but this movie does seem to be lazy. I think they tried to preach against the idea that the cross is just a charm, but further enforced that idea in the process. I'm SO eager to see what you think of _Beyond the Mask_... I think. :-P
What is up with these movies and having the old homeless guy who has a terminal illness turn out to be a guardian angel?? It's really becoming predictable, and the "subtle" hints aren't doing a lot to help.
So wait...that whole massive car crash happens and the only death is the pregnant girl. And she died from childbirth I am no expert in car crashes but uh...it should have been worse
Yep. I always think about people dying (dark, I know. also, I'm on a "reply to my comments" spree. That's why I'm replying to everything you've written today. haha). Anyway, people dying. I think, "yeah, it's sad that a person died. BUT, also, everyone dies. Like Everyone in history has died. Does that mean it's "bad" that one person dies in one way, and another in another way? It's just different. Life is unique and different for everyone. "Bad" in the case of life experiences, is simply a relative term. Life is an adventure and the only thing that makes an adventure exciting is the bumps in the road. Like that Twilight Zone episode where he always wins the jack pot, and it turned out it wasn't heaven, it was actually HELL! Always winning isn't very fun.
It's time for the Christian film genre to actually get stories that both great plot and preach their message of faith without it's characters coming off as unlikeable. In fact, here's a list of films that do this better than this movie, God's Not Dead, Persecuted and other modern day Christian films do:1.) The Ten Commandments2.) Jesus of Nazareth3.) The Greatest Story Ever Told4.) Spartacus5.) Ben-Hur6.) The Robe7.) Quo Vadis 8.) King Of Kings9.) The Prince of EgyptKeep in mind, all the movies listed excluding the last one on the list were made in the 50's and 60's, an era which if I'm correct wasn't all too tolerant of faiths other than Christianity. Those movies actually portrayed it's characters as likeable, the plots were believable, the stories were given plenty of care and most importantly of all they were Christian movies that actually got the message across without promoting through the mouths of unsympathetic, unlikeable jackasses or rely heavily on plot contriences to get their point across and treated their audience, whether they were belivers, non-belivers or those of other faiths with more respect than the new Christian crap that's being churned out as of late. These actually portrayed Christianity in a positive light and actually did so without whacking the audience over the head with it like modern Christian movies do and doing the opposite of what it's supposed to do. In addition, they are movies that I would happily watch again because, to me at least, they're terrific movies that were given lots of care, even if some of the acting may seem a bit dated if not outright cheesy. And I myself am a person who wasn't born when most of these movies were made yet actually watched them.In short, movies that were made so long ago about Christianity manage to do better than modern day films about the same religion. The fact that the new stuff being released doesn't even take or even look at the figurate books of success those movies have done is just downright pathetic. For those of you who want to make Christian movies in the future, do this one thing. Do not emulate God's Not Dead, Do You Believe?, Persecuted, 90 Minutes In Heaven and most of the Christian movies produced during the 1990s and 2000s. Look at the movies I just mentioned, analyze them, study them and pay close attention to how they go about talking about Christianity. Use likeable characters to spread the message, do not portray the characters who aren''t Christians terribly, feature a Christian whose an obvious jackass as an example of how not to act and spread your message as though you actually care about your audience's intelligence. And most importantly, don't create unlikeable, unsympathetic jackass characters like Joss Wheaton, blatant strawman caricatures like Professor Jeffery Raddison or pastors like Reverend Jude and Pastor Dave. If you can do that, you might be able to save this genre. For those of you who wish to and will try to save it, I wish you good luck.
This is probably the best say movie night yet. I had a pretty good ratio of a laugh every five minutes, you hit the beats perfectly. It's something about those Pure Flix movies, man. There's always just so much shoddy screenwriting to enjoy. I am absolutely stoked to see Gods Not Dead 2 when that finally hits theaters next year.
Me too, Scott! I even found a copy of the script! From the looks of it, it'll truly turn this country back to God! Here's the link: tylerhuckabee.com/2015/04/05/gods-not-dead-2-exclusive-script-excerpt/
+ThatOneBlondeGuy oh yeah, dude, sorry I was still watching the video so I didn't click on the link before I made the comment. Once I read the "script" I was able to pick up on it. That was some expertise in fake sincerity, without the context I totally fell for it.
Wow...I just noticed that they just axed off EVERY single African-American in this flick. I mean, not to be hyper-critical, but this movie looks less like the movie Crash and more like a zombie flick. Just replace zombies with the Final Destination Death Force.
+Andrew Holstein I actually think that movie's awfulness was well-known enough that Nostalgia Critic would take notice of it. But then, he probably avoids religious movies no matter what, and with good reason.
First of all your music references are amazing! Second, the LOTR references were spot on and hilarious. Third, my FAVORITE line from the entire thing: "Then we end with a Newsboys song, because apparently they sold their soul to Pure Flix." (I miss the old newsboys so much) I also agree that films like these keep portraying non Christians as the enemy or bad guys, but aren't these films supposed to be a ministry? If you're trying to reach out to non Christians, you're not going to win them over that way. Anyway, good job Kevin! *thumbs up*
I had no desire to actually watch this film so I thought hey, why not just watch Kevin's review? Your reviews are pretty much the only way I watch Christian movies anymore, and rightfully so. So fun and right on!! The ending was hilarious, trying to finish up while the endless voiceover went on and on. It struck me how upset Christians would be if atheists had a film company and made movies about atheists convincing Christians to not believe in God and then painting themselves as the victims whenever possible. It would be ridiculous, yet we think it's totally fine the other way around. Why can't Christian movies simply be about Christians and their lives, and situations they face, instead of it all being a big in-your-face sermon? Maybe one day.
I just found your channel this evening and I already love it so much! It's great hearing your perspective on these things, and I appreciate the overall tone of your videos. Wow my roommates are really freaked out. It's midnight and I was watching the crash scene where the grandparents and little girl are fine and then the truck comes and I screamed "OH SH*T" And then fell into laughter with the FD reference. And then cried when you said "Nee-hee-hee" And now it's awkward.
I hate that argument about EMTs proselytizing. If he was handing out crosses or whatever instead of actually *doing his job*, then obviously he should be fired. Proselytizing to the dying is a job for a chaplain or pastor, not an EMT. Love your reviews, by the way! Hilarious stuff.
You saying "Uh-huh" every time he paused his voice over at the end reminds me of PBG with that kid in the Teletubbies in his Top 10 Worst Lincensed Games. XD
Great review as always. i was surprised you skimmed over the part where the pastor chose to keep the money, though! I mean, it was still stolen money. Maybe I missed something, but wouldn't the right thing be to take it to the police?
I'm for helping people(and animals),but I'm not going to put myself(or someone else) in danger or be homeless. There are wise ways to help people and stupid ways. Letting a homeless person (who could be a rapist) lived in the same house with you is a stupid way to help someone, but sending him to a hotel is the smart way to do it. There's nothing wrong caring and thinking about yourself,as long as you think about other people too.

+jayblade2000 fellow Christian otaku lover! you rang? 😀
Saw that Jesus Freak joke coming a mile away.
OH OHHH!
I found that joke cringy but beautiful at the same time
People say im strange then they'd make me a stranger
At thirteen minutes I cracked up "are they taking pictures in there?" Bahahahha!!!
"Oh, is he takin' pictures in there?" 😂😂😂
18:56-19:10 THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS. As an atheist that tries to work with religious people, this cannot be emphasized enough
work with? you can't convert us to what we are exactly what athiest do you can't pick sides without discussion no disrespect but we're not retarted please tell me is that all you athiest think of us we have reasons to why we believe and other reasons you can't listen to man who has observed any thing on basing on assumptions
+Cman Shaw ?
I totally agree and I’m like aren’t you supposed to win ppl over with love?
Oh my gosh, your jokes were on point. I nearly lost it at the Final Destination part. And your commentary on the flaws of the movie is great, too! I'm excited for the next one and I keep crossing my fingers and hoping that someday you'll do "Time Changer". :D Keep up the fantastic work!
My god, someone else has seen Time Changer, The only movie that left me laid up in bed for two weeks afterwards because it had frozen my lower spinal cord and vocal chords from its sheer mediocrity?
That's some intense mediocrity indeed.
JediAnn Solo Yes, it also damaged my language centre, so now I can't say the word that means the opposite of 'yes'
"Oh the rapture happened, guess he didn't believe fast enough."XD
"*GASP* The rapture happened! I guess he didn't believe fast enough..." XDD
Wait, is that Madison Pettis? She was in a Christian movie? Do you know what this means?!
Do You Believe? is a spin-off of the greatest anime of all time!
"Who's Russ? Who's Whitney?" Hahaha!
You should totally review Mom's night out! I was not expecting it to be a total Christian movie
You're reviews are hilarious. Thank you Blimey Cow for introducing me to SayGoodnightKevin 😂😂
+Kelsey J. :-) thanks so much! I'll let them know!
Say Goodnight Kevin No problem! and thanks lol
But the old people and little girl are alright, OR ARE THEY!! died at that part
“Just because we’re on the street doesn’t mean that I’m a bad mother!”
“That thought never crossed my mind.”
“It crossed mine.”
Same.
So because they’re homeless it makes them a bad person?🤷
"Is he listening to Adventures in Odyssey's Sergeant York?" Eee, sometimes it doesn't take much for you to make me happy! (It just takes hours of scripting, filming and editing. Yeah.)
"You're gonna have to put me down.... neeeeiiiigh" omg I died
Because if we don't get to the point, then we will be judged for not trying hard enough to get people to become Christians!!
+Joe Repp *coughcough* Mad Max Fury Road *coughcough*
Why can't more Christian films be more subtle? +Joe Repp Because my mom likes them. I think people in my moms demographic really like these kinds of movies. I don't know if there just accustom to bad, on the nose tv shows. Or if they just have no tastes. Or Evan if it's because they view the movie with Christian goggles.
The sad part is that there are good, subtle, Christian movies out there. But they don't get the press or the views.
Yep. "Christian" filmmaking definitely needs some nuance and needs to tackle difficult subject that don't have easy answers.
*****
Granite flats: It's a tv series.
All of these are on netflix.
+Say Goodnight Kevin For sure, that makes a lot of sense.
Your quick-fire cheeky comments crack me up! I love your reviews.
So wait...that whole massive car crash happens and the only death is the pregnant girl. And she died from childbirth
I am no expert in car crashes but uh...it should have been worse
NEWS FLASH! God lets bad things happen ALL THE TIME! The Bible never said God wouldn't let bad things happen.
Say Goodnight Kevin More TH-camrs should do a spree like you're doing lol
Philip Paul News flash God isn't real : )))
Eratosthenes Except for the fact that he does! lol
Philip Paul Fact? How is it a fact?
Here's the link:
tylerhuckabee.com/2015/04/05/gods-not-dead-2-exclusive-script-excerpt/
+ThatOneBlondeGuy I think you and I are excited for different reasons, but I'm not gonna knock your enthusiasm, man.
+Scott Hollingsworth (Swholli) I ain't gonna judge you for you reasons, either.
The previous reply was sarcasm, if I didn't make that obvious. Haha
+ThatOneBlondeGuy oh yeah, dude, sorry I was still watching the video so I didn't click on the link before I made the comment.
Once I read the "script" I was able to pick up on it. That was some expertise in fake sincerity, without the context I totally fell for it.
+Scott Hollingsworth (Swholli) Yeah, that's the problem with the Internet: you can never tell if it's sarcasm or actually real.
Wow...I just noticed that they just axed off EVERY single African-American in this flick. I mean, not to be hyper-critical, but this movie looks less like the movie Crash and more like a zombie flick. Just replace zombies with the Final Destination Death Force.
Cinemasins reference. *ding*
"Who's Russ?" HAHA!
"Or are they?"
I genuinely Burt out laughing at work
You should review War Room when it comes out on film!
Actually the average person has 7 pairs of shoes, so in Chicago, there's 150,000 souls counting their shoes
Third time rewatcing and I just realized we finally find out Pretty Boy's name at 28:07. It's Percy I'm pretty sure.
C'mon you gotta to Kirk Cameron's "Saving Christmas" movie!
+Andrew Holstein I actually think that movie's awfulness was well-known enough that Nostalgia Critic would take notice of it. But then, he probably avoids religious movies no matter what, and with good reason.
+David Johnson He's made a few Kirk Cameron jokes this year so you never know
oh yeah and he actually just reviewed Passion of the Christ
+David Johnson Cinema Snob doesn't dodge 'em.
+tintinismybelgian And his review is perfect.
So many main characters it's confusing! You know what that means... "Josh, get out the messyges board!"
31:16 - 31:33: Not only the filmmakers rip off Crash, but they are apparently ripping off the ending of the Rent musical as well.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Please don't stop making these.
Why is the nurse?doctor? lady walking around the hospital with gloves on and touching herself and others with them on?
First of all your music references are amazing! Second, the LOTR references were spot on and hilarious. Third, my FAVORITE line from the entire thing: "Then we end with a Newsboys song, because apparently they sold their soul to Pure Flix." (I miss the old newsboys so much)
I also agree that films like these keep portraying non Christians as the enemy or bad guys, but aren't these films supposed to be a ministry? If you're trying to reach out to non Christians, you're not going to win them over that way. Anyway, good job Kevin! *thumbs up*
Thanks for your movie night videos Kevin! They're great! Suggestion: To Save a Life
+Abi Johnson Sounds like it would include a song by the Fray. :P
Wow those crash scenes! 😱 I am guilty of laughing at them! 😂
And seriously Kevin, a Mucho Libre reference?
"Good luck describing me to the sketch artist." ROFL!!!!!!
5:38-5:44 I hope this isn't inappropriate but when I hear 117 I think Halo and Master Chief :)
I almost died from laughter from that cinemasins joke! Oh lord I wasn't ready XD
4:01 Wasnt he in stranger things?
I want you to review "The Christmas Shoes" movie!
They made a movie of that Christmas song?
I just found your channel this evening and I already love it so much! It's great hearing your perspective on these things, and I appreciate the overall tone of your videos. You're funny and don't shy away from pointing out flaws, but you don't do it in an overly negative or harsh way. Please keep up the great work! as soon as I get some steady income, I'll pledge to your patreon in a heartbeat ^^
hahahahahHahahahahaha that monologue at the end 😂😂😂😂😂
1.The Bibleman Rises
2. Bibleman Begins
3.Bibleman v Muslim Man
4. Bibleman League
5.The Bibleman Returns
The bibleman cinematic universe
You know that if Bibleman fought a Muslim, he would be the villain and the story would be about how evil or corrupt Islam is.
Nice Inner Tube editing on the new ep lol. Also thanks for answering my question about the mouse! :D
+PersianMonkeyStudios seven
It's been a while, so I'm running through the archives again. It says a lot that I'm still laughing along after a dozen or so videos that I already watched before. Keep being you, Kevin. :-)
Oh, and more Droopy Dog, please!
If Bobby caught on fire would he be Bobby Burns
Ba dum Best Picture winning movie.
I'm starting to think Bobby Burns did catch on fire...
Wow my roommates are really freaked out. It's midnight and I was watching the crash scene where the grandparents and little girl are fine and then the truck comes and I screamed
"OH SH*T"
And then fell into laughter with the FD reference.
And then cried when you said "Nee-hee-hee"
And now it's awkward.
XD
I ain't gonna lie, that shoe sole line killed me
These are so much fun! Could you do one on "To Save a Life"? :)
Emma Probst I love that movie
Great review as always. i was surprised you skimmed over the part where the pastor chose to keep the money, though! I mean, it was still stolen money. Maybe I missed something, but wouldn't the right thing be to take it to the police?
You're too young to have seen it, but this is like 12 episodes of Day of Discovery smashed together. If it's available online, it's so worth a watch.
29:18 "I'm not a pastor but I play one on TV!"
Holy fever dream. The chaotic energy of this review perfectly matches the chaotic energy of this entire fucking movie, particularly the last third.
I guess he didn't believe fast enough
Hey...being a stapler IS hard work. Just ask Milton
Holy shit when all the cars started crashing into each other I was DYING. Kendrick Brothers, pay attention: this is comedy gold.
Wait... could it be true? Is Samwise Gamgee... CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSTTTTTTTIIIIIIAAAAANNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol, could be. But I think, like most people involved in these movies, he's just happy to collect the pay check.
+Say Goodnight Kevin Sean Astin actually confirmed during a press conference that he is a Christian.
Chad Lewis lol. Well, there we go. It's a fact!
HES CHRISTIAAAANNNNNN
Really enjoy these movie reviews Kevin! Would love to see more of these!
Is that carmen from spykids?!
There's nothing wrong caring and thinking about yourself,as long as you think about other people too.
busted up laughing when you added Dungeon in the house description
