Hi, I have a Sony A6400 and I could not change the USB Connection. The solution is: Turn off "CTRL w/ Smartphone" in the Network Settings, then the USB Connection can be changed. Now it works like a charm.

Perfect tutorial. But best tip, since you can't minimise the Sony Remote software put it on a new desktop! You can just create another desktop (Win + tab) and it'll keep it running.
Hi Chris. Thanks for a very clear tutorial. I have been using my RX10 mkII. For all Zoom users, you can skip the OBS step, since Zoom lets you share any of your connected screens, but also allows to share a selection of the screen, so you can simply broadcast the part of Remote with the live feed, hiding all the camera controls, etc. I hope you find this useful!
Any chances of getting a similar solution is streaming Via Ecamm Live? And u did not mention Sony 5100 alpha, does that camera also compatible to be used as webcame directly via USB?
I have a Sony a5000 camera and have set it up in the way you have explained, even used the original usb cable to connect it to the laptop and also have set it to manual photo mode but for some reason, the live view doesn't want to appear in the remote app. Is the a5000 just not able to support the remote app?
The app doesn't support camera. Just as many others (a6000 included). Should still work via wifi but I'm having a lot of trouble with delay and I'm also searching for a fix!

OK, my snags and my fixes for a Sony A6400. 1. USB Connection setting was set to "Mass Storage" and grayed out making it impossible to change it. Solution: Go to "Network1" page under the "globe" icon. Go to 1st page. Go to "Ctr w/Smartphone" setting - turn this "off". Now go back to the "toolbox" icon - page 4 and find the "USB Connection" setting and turn to "PC Remote". Follow this video carefully and it works like a charm every time! Thanks for posting this. It saved me a couple hundred bucks by allowing me to do this without purchasing a Delgato Cam Link! I have used for Twitch and for Zoom and it works great.
I found out that the quality looks much better if you put the camera in video mode (a6500 for me). A lot less noise, because the view finder (and also the picture you see on the screen) adapts to the selected shutter speed then.
I have sony slt a -58 , in the remote option the camera is connected but after opening, not able to see the live preview just the green bar is moving. Please help
Having a problem where my Sony A7, model ILCE-7, can connect to the remote app and be controlled, yet I do not see anything on the Remote viewfinder. All it displays is a forever loading bar. Any ideas?
Hi Chris, I've done this before and my camera over heats. As far as I know, the actual use of recording is not what causes the over heating but rather the amount of time the sensor is collecting data. And due to it collecting data to transfer to your computer, it does over heat.

No Live view display for ILCE-7R ILCE-7 ILCE-6500 (6300 6000 5100 5000 3500 3000) and whole bunch of NEX series cameras using Sony Imaging Edge according to Sony Imaging Edge desktop Website supported devices. So is This Video a bit misleading?
At 3:42 ... I am not seeing the drop-down menu like that on OBS. (Mac) I only have the "Window" option. I don't see the Screen Recorder option. I also don't have a "Window Match Priority" option. Any suggestions where I might be skipping a beat?

Thanks man! You saved me a ton of money and effort. Time to sell the Razer Kiyo and use my expensive gear. One tip is to definitely make sure you're in 1080p vs 4K. The latency for 4K isn't quite there yet. Plus on most cameras it will crop in.

This also works with some older generation Alpha's, like the A77MII. If you were looking how to turn it into a webcam source, for a third party program like Teams, Skype, etc, there's a plugin to OBS called "Virtualcam", that does that. So it goes camera -> Remote -> OBS -> OBS Virtualcam -> Skype
Since last night I had to discover that there is a problem caused by this workaround: There is a big latency between audio and video of about 1 second. I am using Zoom to teach sports online during the Corona-time in which we can't go out. So this is a big issue. I'm sorry for that.
@@womplestilskin That's what I did first. So in Zoom only the workaround of William did work (with the consequence I mentioned). That's why I ordered a Blackmagic Design, UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Didn't arrive yet...
Well not really...If I'm correct, this only works for software like skype/zoom if you use the screen share feature. But this is quite limited, since only one person (at least for zoom) is able to screenshare...The camera is still not detected as "webcam"...
@@moritzberger9383 You could add the Virtual Cam Addon to your OBS software so you can set up a scene with only your Camera visible and the output of the scene will be detected as a virtual webcam by your computer.
I think the only issue is the frames. I've noticed when I do it this way, the video people see on my streams or on calls have a VERY low FPS, but when I do it as an actual webcam with a capture card, i can get 60fps.
We are using a Sony A6000 and cannot see the preview screen in Remote. We're connected to the pc via the usb data cable and the computer can see the camera. We can even control the camera with Remote but do not have a preview screen. Remote is just a slender vertical window. Any help would be graciously appreciated.
Great video, i used the same trick before and with this video it would have been a lot easier to make it work. But i have two improvements for the community. If you want to use the obs output stream as a webcam in Skype or anything similar i can recommend the virtual Webcam plugin for obs. Furthermore you should maximize the sony remote window to get more pixels of your screens/window recorded which results in a better webcam video quality.

Update, I've nanaged to install the plugin and can select it under "tools" on OBS, can start the application but then Skype cannot see it as an availbale Webcam. Any ideas or suggestions? Trying to set it up with my A7sii for my lads first lockdown music lesson over Skype.

I then switched back to the original long USB cable and it still appears to be working. This seems like a very strange Sony bug. The other thing I wondered is if it's possible to adjust the quality of the stream coming from the cameras USB Ccable to that it's at least HD?
Ahh no worries. That’s very odd! Like I said no one else has commented with the issue. Technically I don’t think “hd” is possible but the bigger you have the remote window the better the quality will be. Just took a look at your channel, looks great :)

Hey so im using an a7 and i get to the remote app and it recognises it and when i click into it the remote shows up but i cant see the live view even on manual mode. do you know why that might be?

I am having the same issue. Found that not many of the Sony Cameras support Live View. Only the A6100, A6400, A6600Sony Alpha 7 III, Sony Alpha 7S, Sony Alpha 7S II, Sony Alpha 7R II, Sony Alpha 7R III, Sony a7R IV, Sony Alpha 9, & Sony Alpha a9 II are supported. All others are a no-go. Get an Elgato or a Razer Ripsaw HD to connect other devices using the Sony HDMI output. :-( support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/devices/#emount

PERFECT, I just was not able to grasp how these bigger cameras were able to even connect to the computer (I assumed it was an HDMI connection--I already spent time checking my PC Specs and looking into ways to get a third HDMI slot!). @@vertusmatjaz most probably. The Remote software doesn't let me choose a resolution. If you can connect camera's hdmi output to capture card then that should be the highest. But still, for my A7R iii the quality using usb-c and OBS-Studio is very high since it's meant for actual professionals previewing their work.
Anything similar for Nikon DSLRs? I know they have a live screen mode that works with their smartphone app using WiFi but it seems to lag a lot and its resolution is fairly low.
Top tip: if your Sony camera has a USB-C port, use a USB-C cable. This will save you half an hour of trying every single micro USB cable in your drawer searching for the right one. Great video, by the way! Thanks for putting this together.

I stopped using this Method since the preview is not 60 FPS it feels like 20 FPS and if you are using an external MIC like Rode NT1A the Sound is delayed so the Cam link is the Last Option ( i think its the Input lagg That causes this issue) otherwise Great Vid 🔥
Thanks for this, Chris. I had a couple of issues and I'd like to share my solutions below. 1. Cable - I've lost the original cable and most of my micro USB cables didn't work. I finally tried the cable that comes with the PlayStation 4 controllers and it worked. I also heard Xbox controller cables work. 2. Virtual Cam for Mac wasn't installing - I had OBS for quite a while and haven't needed to update it to the latest version until now. Downloaded the latest one and it worked. Liked and subbed! Keep it up, man.
Hiya Chris, noticed when I am trying to record sound and video on any of my Sonys A6400 A7ii A9 through Sony Edge and OBS I am getting a terrible video and sound lag so when its recorded you see this also, it's not smooth. You can physically see this lag in Sony Edge, before you even attempt to record. So by using all my cameras and Edge and seeing it here before OBS, is there a setting in Edge I have to change, or is it something else? I am on Windows 10.
The delay of Edge Remote live video feed from camera is probably caused by the USB 2.0 connection and is inevitable. However, I think OBS allows you to apply a delay to your audio input so both video and audio delay by the same amount of time. Try Google "OBS audio delay".
Your USB port probably only has enough power to slowly charge the camera and having it on is draining more than what the port is providing. Plugging the camera into a powered port should alleviate the issue.
@@LeonidAuerbakh All USB port are "powered" (or maybe I've just never seen an UN-powered USB port)...they all output 5 volts...it's the amperage that's the problem...standard USB ports, I think, put out 1/2 an amp (500 milliamps) which isn't enough amperage to power larger devices...it will charge the camera battery, but only when the camera is OFF. But, maybe some of the smaller cameras, like the A6000-series, or RX-100-series WILL get enough amperage/power? Don't know.
It is more like a preview window on the Sony camera, is it 1080p? how is the video quality compare it hdmi output on live streaming quality? When use obs live streaming the video usually a little late than the audio, not sync well, do you have this problem?

great way! did u manage to connect sony alpha to remote through WIFI, not usb? i guess it should be possible because i see the "connection type", "IP" columns in Remote app. but i could not do this, can connect only for transfer files to desktop or remote control but only on mobile, not on a PC :(

We use it in the production world to go from our mixers into a laptop that handles streaming. It takes HDMI from the camera and converts it to a lossless video feed via USB 3.0. Thanks again!

I'm using an a6500, which doesn't have live view (according to that chart), but it works great. All you need is USB Remote Shooting capability, which the a5000, a5100 and a6000 can do.
Will this work with Skype and Zoom? I don't want to live stream but I would love to use the camera as a high quality webcam? I also have a Rode VideoMic NTG attached to the camera so would like to pull the audio through as well.
@@daansebastian Unfortunately not without one of those Elgato Cam Link capture cards! There are some videos with people doing it through OBS streaming software, but its such a long awkward way round.
Thank you for this , sadly realized it doesnt work on Sony ILCE-7 (plain A7) cameras as Remote does not support Display Live view (the screen you resized doent show). :( If anyone has hinst how to make it work (without HDMI USB card)
For my A7 I use the PlayMemories Smart Remote Control App ( www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/usbdetail.php?eid=IS9104-NPIA09014_00-F00002 ) to stream the live image to my Android Phone. I'm trying it with my Alpha 6300 I've noticed there's a slight delay or lag on my end when using it. I've a i7 6700 and rtx 2080. I'm using a Xbox One cable to the camera seems to work.
I would say the Elgato capture will have a higher resolution capability of 4k using the HDMI port with USB 3.0 verses using the USB 2.0 port with 1080p resolution using this method.

cam link and capture card all the same thing (capture video send to pc). you can just get any cap card used for the low for better quality. cam link just doesnt have an output hdmi, so if you geta capture card it works the same regardless, you just arent going to use that output. I recently got 2 capture cards, one is game capture HD and the other is HD 60 and i only paid $45 USD for both of them on craigslist, and they work fine for over 2 months now, i stress tested them by leaving everything on for 8 hours + no over heating etc. I know people who've been using a capture card for years and none have failed. just a thought cause this remote app sucks alot in comparison but is still viable since ive used it. I use the game capture HD which is the lesser one for the camera (a7sii) and the HD 60 for a console. I recently just for kicks got my old Dazzle (2008 i believe) to take in video from my a7sii, which is very very bad but smoother than the remote app. but i got it to work. so any capture card can get you camera input.

Just an FYI. Try running that remote software as admin (right click the software -> Run as admin). It may let you minimize.

The USB Connection in my RX100 M6 is disabled, it shows only Mass Storage :((
Apparently there is an option to disable co trio using a smartphone? If you turn it off then it should work.
luong nguyen duc I had the same issue. You have to turn off Smartphone Remote Control. I think it was in menu 4.

I have an a5000 and I can control functions but I can't get a live view on my computer display. Does this not work on any of the lower level Sony cameras?
I have a a5100 and it does not work for my either. It's not supported for some models: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/devices/
This also works with some older generation Alpha's, like the A77MII. If you were looking how to turn it into a webcam source, for a third party program like Teams, Skype, etc, there's a plugin to OBS called "Virtualcam", that does that.
So it goes camera -> Remote -> OBS -> OBS Virtualcam -> Skype

Since last night I had to discover that there is a problem caused by this workaround: There is a big latency between audio and video of about 1 second. I am using Zoom to teach sports online during the Corona-time in which we can't go out. So this is a big issue. I'm sorry for that.

Well not really...If I'm correct, this only works for software like skype/zoom if you use the screen share feature. But this is quite limited, since only one person (at least for zoom) is able to screenshare...The camera is still not detected as "webcam"...

@@moritzberger9383 You could add the Virtual Cam Addon to your OBS software so you can set up a scene with only your Camera visible and the output of the scene will be detected as a virtual webcam by your computer.
I think the only issue is the frames. I've noticed when I do it this way, the video people see on my streams or on calls have a VERY low FPS, but when I do it as an actual webcam with a capture card, i can get 60fps.

We are using a Sony A6000 and cannot see the preview screen in Remote. We're connected to the pc via the usb data cable and the computer can see the camera. We can even control the camera with Remote but do not have a preview screen. Remote is just a slender vertical window. Any help would be graciously appreciated.

Great video, i used the same trick before and with this video it would have been a lot easier to make it work. But i have two improvements for the community. If you want to use the obs output stream as a webcam in Skype or anything similar i can recommend the virtual Webcam plugin for obs.
Furthermore you should maximize the sony remote window to get more pixels of your screens/window recorded which results in a better webcam video quality.

Update, I've nanaged to install the plugin and can select it under "tools" on OBS, can start the application but then Skype cannot see it as an availbale Webcam. Any ideas or suggestions? Trying to set it up with my A7sii for my lads first lockdown music lesson over Skype.

I then switched back to the original long USB cable and it still appears to be working. This seems like a very strange Sony bug. The other thing I wondered is if it's possible to adjust the quality of the stream coming from the cameras USB Ccable to that it's at least HD?
Ahh no worries. That’s very odd! Like I said no one else has commented with the issue. Technically I don’t think “hd” is possible but the bigger you have the remote window the better the quality will be. Just took a look at your channel, looks great :)

and when i click into it the remote shows up but i cant see the live view even on manual mode. do you know why that might be?

I saw another small video the same gentleman made and it indeed does state that the Sony a 6000 will not work in live view mode 😞
I am having the same issue. Found that not many of the Sony Cameras support Live View. Only the A6100, A6400, A6600Sony Alpha 7 III, Sony Alpha 7S, Sony Alpha 7S II, Sony Alpha 7R II, Sony Alpha 7R III, Sony a7R IV, Sony Alpha 9, & Sony Alpha a9 II are supported. All others are a no-go. Get an Elgato or a Razer Ripsaw HD to connect other devices using the Sony HDMI output. :-( support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/imagingedge/en/devices/#emount

@@vertusmatjaz most probably. The Remote software doesn't let me choose a resolution. If you can connect camera's hdmi output to capture card then that should be the highest. But still, for my A7R iii the quality using usb-c and OBS-Studio is very high since it's meant for actual professionals previewing their work.

Anything similar for Nikon DSLRs? I know they have a live screen mode that works with their smartphone app using WiFi but it seems to lag a lot and its resolution is fairly low.
Great workaround, if you use "Game capture" instead of "Display capture" in OBS you can minimize the Remote -programm window.

Top tip: if your Sony camera has a USB-C port, use a USB-C cable. This will save you half an hour of trying every single micro USB cable in your drawer searching for the right one.

I stopped using this Method since the preview is not 60 FPS it feels like 20 FPS and if you are using an external MIC like Rode NT1A the Sound is delayed so the Cam link is the Last Option ( i think its the Input lagg That causes this issue) otherwise Great Vid 🔥

Thanks for this, Chris. I had a couple of issues and I'd like to share my solutions below.
1. Cable - I've lost the original cable and most of my micro USB cables didn't work. I finally tried the cable that comes with the PlayStation 4 controllers and it worked. I also heard Xbox controller cables work.
2. Virtual Cam for Mac wasn't installing - I had OBS for quite a while and haven't needed to update it to the latest version until now. Downloaded the latest one and it worked.

Hiya Chris, noticed when I am trying to record sound and video on any of my Sonys A6400 A7ii A9 through Sony Edge and OBS I am getting a terrible video and sound lag so when its recorded you see this also, it's not smooth. You can physically see this lag in Sony Edge, before you even attempt to record. So by using all my cameras and Edge and seeing it here before OBS, is there a setting in Edge I have to change, or is it something else? I am on Windows 10.
The delay of Edge Remote live video feed from camera is probably caused by the USB 2.0 connection and is inevitable. However, I think OBS allows you to apply a delay to your audio input so both video and audio delay by the same amount of time. Try Google "OBS audio delay".
Why does this drain my battery, even though it has a charging symbol in the corner? (a6500)

Get a battery dummy and a power supply
Your USB port probably only has enough power to slowly charge the camera and having it on is draining more than what the port is providing. Plugging the camera into a powered port should alleviate the issue.

@@LeonidAuerbakh All USB port are "powered" (or maybe I've just never seen an UN-powered USB port)...they all output 5 volts...it's the amperage that's the problem...standard USB ports, I think, put out 1/2 an amp (500 milliamps) which isn't enough amperage to power larger devices...it will charge the camera battery, but only when the camera is OFF. But, maybe some of the smaller cameras, like the A6000-series, or RX-100-series WILL get enough amperage/power? Don't know.
It is more like a preview window on the Sony camera, is it 1080p? how is the video quality compare it hdmi output on live streaming quality? When use obs live streaming the video usually a little late than the audio, not sync well, do you have this problem?

Great video, well done! If you want optimal video quality with basically zero delay, please check out the Elgato Camlink. We use it in the production world to go from our mixers into a laptop that handles streaming. It takes HDMI from the camera and converts it to a lossless video feed via USB 3.0. Thanks again!

I'm using an a6500, which doesn't have live view (according to that chart), but it works great. All you need is USB Remote Shooting capability, which the a5000, a5100 and a6000 can do.

@@daansebastian Unfortunately not without one of those Elgato Cam Link capture cards! There are some videos with people doing it through OBS streaming software, but its such a long awkward way round.

For my A7 I use the PlayMemories Smart Remote Control App ( www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/usbdetail.php?eid=IS9104-NPIA09014_00-F00002 ) to stream the live image to my Android Phone. I'm trying it with my Alpha 6300 I've noticed there's a slight delay or lag on my end when using it. I've a i7 6700 and rtx 2080. I'm using a Xbox One cable to the camera seems to work.
Has anyone compared broadcast image quality using this method vs. running it through a capture card, like an Elgato 4k?
I would say the Elgato capture will have a higher resolution capability of 4k using the HDMI port with USB 3.0 verses using the USB 2.0 port with 1080p resolution using this method.

I ordered a Cam Link direct from the Corsair website (about 3 days ago). Got my shipping notice yesterday saying it should be here tomorrow sometime. So, you might check www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Elgato-Gaming/Capture/Game-Capture/p/10GAM9901 Maybe you'll get lucky like I did.
cam link and capture card all the same thing (capture video send to pc). you can just get any cap card used for the low for better quality. cam link just doesnt have an output hdmi, so if you geta capture card it works the same regardless, you just arent going to use that output. I recently got 2 capture cards, one is game capture HD and the other is HD 60 and i only paid $45 USD for both of them on craigslist, and they work fine for over 2 months now, i stress tested them by leaving everything on for 8 hours + no over heating etc. I know people who've been using a capture card for years and none have failed. just a thought cause this remote app sucks alot in comparison but is still viable since ive used it. I use the game capture HD which is the lesser one for the camera (a7sii) and the HD 60 for a console. I recently just for kicks got my old Dazzle (2008 i believe) to take in video from my a7sii, which is very very bad but smoother than the remote app. but i got it to work. so any capture card can get you camera input.
I actually bought the Avermedia HD2 in the end and it’s perfect. Plug & play is an understatement.
