Thank you so much for reacting to my all-time favorite (Diamond Dave era only) band. Please please please check out "Woman in Love" off VHII. Many of us rabid Diamond Dave era fanatics think this song is the best power rock ballad ever written. th-cam.com/video/2aQeiG0KAzU/w-d-xo.html On this song you can DEFINITELY tell where Diamond Dave (singer) got a lot of influence from. See if you can guess. I let my mom hear it years ago and she said it sounds like it came from the 60's Motown era. See what you think. It's hard to date this band because their music still sounds fresh today.

Probably Van Halen's most chilled song they really caught a vibe on this classic. Dave grew up on jazz, funk and soul music almost exclusively which shines through in this classic. I also love how Eddie set such a melodic dirty slow groove then gives a solo that has so much direct in your face intensity, the perfect contrast to the verse that just works so well.

This album was when Van Halen was in their most turmoil within the group, especially with guitarist Eddie Van Halen and the singer David Lee Roth. It was getting so bad that Eddie almost left his own group. You can hear the anger in Ed’s riffs, playing with extra vigor and anger. But it is their quintessential album, with tone, guitar, lyrics, the drastic differences in each song, some jazz, some funk, some hardcore rock. All that turmoil turns this album into a classic with so many emotions going on within the group

The van Halen bros were raised by a professional jazz musician, then learned classical piano from when they were kids, long before they knew what rock was. And Dave was brought up listening to swing and bluesy stuff. So the band have stronger musical roots than many of the typical garage bands that made it big.

As a kid in the 70's and 80's, sitting alone in a room with headphones on, album sleeve in hand, listening to all the different musical layers and reading along with the lyrics. It was a great way to enjoy these albums as a whole and not like the current environment of downloading a single song like the kids do these days. You actually are engrossed on what they did to put these albums together and appreciate it.

I take it as: The song opens at the end of their relationship & as the song goes on its pertaining to new chics he meets. ...The guitar intro was him having high gain & hi volume, OR being close to the amp while sliding to the note & rolling his guitar volume up to control the feedback.

This is definitely a confusing song lyrically. Dave can sometimes get on a level that’s so deep and intertwined in that maze of circuits in his brain it’s really hard to digest. This is their most unique song imo that they ever wrote. It’s what set them apart from every other rock n roll band. No one ever put out music like this. Here’s a good question for you: what category do you put Van Halen in after listening to this album? Example: hard rock, metal, glam rock, classic rock
I’ve never really been bc able to put them in a category because of songs like this. They are so versatile and able to pull off what most bands would be terrified to attempt. They do it cause it’s who they are. It’s all a part of the magic in their music. Starting with the first album they started expressing a story, their story, a musical journey. A musical jamboree!

Excellent commentary on the songs from my favorite band of all time. They didn't have a run like the Rolling Stones, but Van Halen made music off and on for a few decades. Obviously the first decade was filled with hits and the rest was filler in a way, but that's usually the case with bands...if they can even make it that far. It helped that Edward Van Halen was the most gifted and innovative guitarist that I've ever seen. He is irreplaceable. At least we have the recordings.

The guitar solo in this song is not as fast or long as most of Eddie’s solos but a lot of guitarist’s say this is a very difficult solo to play. Something about impossible finger placements from what I heard. Great song

    • @stringtheoryguitars4952
      @stringtheoryguitars4952 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

EXTREMELY difficult solo to play, even more so than his others. Eddie’s solos always demand chops, timing, etc, but this one jumps all over the neck, even in the middle of a phrase. Of course Eddie makes it feel almost effortless, funky, slinky, and sexy.
And THAT’S the part which befuddles us mortal guitarists; the ease at which he accomplished these feats of virtuosity. There’s no other word to describe it but “genius”

  • @reset-xs9ql

there is a rumor that Dave wanted to write a reggae song with Eddie. This is what they came up with. it is terrific. there is a key change that accentuates the lyric/mood change after guitar solo (which is stellar) going towards the fade out. So, Dave evidently had experienced f'ing up a relationship then by the end is back to being "ahead of the game, I'm just a push over".. ever optimistic. moving on.

Album gets 12 out of 10. But, I am one of those “David Lee Roth singing or is it REALLY Van Halen?”
I’ll take a bunch of fallout on the comments. It is a personal taste thing. You can tell me I am incorrect. I’ll say OK and still only listen to DLR-VH
I *think” DLR was a massive 60s Motown fan. Eddie and Alex van Halen parent was a professional musician for classical. But I don’t know if Eddie can ever read music - he just makes a guitar sing.

For me, personally, this is the last great album that they ever did. After that, their style shifted more towards the "Pop" end of the spectrum. Almost as if they were targeting a female audience.
It was around that time that I began to gravitate towards bands like Alice in Chains, and Tool.
And, I was never a Sammy Hagar fan, who took over vocals after David Lee Roth (vocals on this song) parted ways with the band.
But this song was one of my favorites. I'm 60 years old and I've been with VH since the beginning. Maybe I'm just a little bit bias. I've always had an ear for a darker sound in music.

Ren and David have similar vibrato when they are falsetto and gritty. I hear Ren, too.
