Hey Mugs, on behalf of millions of dedicated Van Halen fans, we say “welcome to the family”. Critics dismissed VH as a “party band” but we say hell yes, let’s party!
We the people have always recognized and appreciated what Van Halen was doing: bringing us together in the name of music and in the spirit of Rock n Roll.

Every song off the first 4 albums does too, IMO. Even the original songs off Diver Down. Every one of their songs are unique in their own way and still sounds fresh today. It's hard to date them if you've never heard of them. Awhile back I put on "Woman in Love" for my mom and she thought it sounded like a 60's Motown era song.

2:19 - The nostalgia comes from the fact that VH was a backyard party band before they got signed. Nearly all of the songs on their first few albums are dripping with a vibe, and that vibe is called summertime. Early Van Halen is summertime - the summertime of young, beautiful people bursting with energy. That's what it is.

This in my favorite VH song! That intro holds a special place for me. I was 16 and me and a bunch of friends spent the night partying on the beach. The party winded down and I was sitting on the hood of the car leaning back on the windshield, coming down from an acid trip. This intro came on as the a.m. sun was starting to rise and it was a perfect moment. You should look for their live version from the Oakland California concert in '81. If you want to know how high their energy level was, check it out. They also do "Unchained" and "So this is love?".

When you peel back the many incredible layers of VH and it's work, you just continue to be impressed by so many different small but crucial additions to the music like the various percussion instruments to Dave's never ending vocal fills of screams and whistle like exclamations that simply act like icing on a great cake! Enjoy unpacking everything this band brings to the table. It's a big impressive collection!

The reason you felt mysteriously nostalgic in the beginning is because music, as is all great art, is about communication, even when there are no voices. Your emotions should be stirred.
That guitar intro was written and performed by a genius level, historic figure of a musician who also put together some of the greatest guitar tones ever recorded. That intro is the definition of melancholy and introspective feelings.
    You are tuned in Brother.
Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was not just a rock guitarist. He was a master.

A thing about this album's more mainstream reception when it came out; it wasn't great. To summarize, it was accused of being too dark and melancholy, like the times begged for more pop-ish /"upbeat" themes. As for me, Fair Warning has always been my favorite album. These compositions withstand the test of time. I have never stopped playing Fair Warning, whence more popular groupings of VH songs have fallen on and off for me over the decades. Whatever was going on with VH at the time, I agree with you Mr. Mugnify, in the sense that the creativity quotient on this album is unsurpassed...and you ain't done yet!

I'm a huge van halen fan, and push comes to shove is one of my absolute favorite songs by them, but I feel most people overlook that song, it doesnt sound like anything else on this album, or really anything they ever did, their singer David Lee Roth is a big old school jazz and blues fan and he was really into like old 30s and 40s music, and Eddie Van Halen was a classically trained piano player and his dad was a jazz horn player "they cover the old tune Big bad Bill is sweet William now on their album Diver Down amd Eddie and Alex's dad plays horn on it" but before you check out push comes to shove it has a very smoky room just kinda playin music in a little club or studio vibe to it, in my opinion great song.

This album was released in 81 my senior year of high school. Let's play guitar for almost 40 years and finally about a month ago started learning this song. Just got to clean the solo up a little bit. There is something about this song though. Get goosebumps sometimes playing or listening to it.
And you really need to google The story of how Eddie Van Halen was asked by Michael Jackson to do it. At the end of the story is Eddie did the solo and Steve lukather of Toto did the rest of the song for the most part. But great story overall.

About the creative freedom, this album was really Eddie's creation. He would even sneak into the studio to work on it without the rest of the band knowing about it. A lot of people say this was Eddie's "darkest" playing. I'm not sure what that means, but I kinda feel like you do, that he was feeling free.

Granted, my older brother only owned the first 4 VH albums, but, Fair Warning was definitely my atmospheric favorite

Dude you gotta reaction the live version of this from a live video from 1981 Oakland footage. Frickin insane. Also has unchained badassery as they pulled this off live.
