Love this Van Halen journey you are on. Brings me back to 1978 when I first heard this album. I ended up listening to this album every day that summer and to this day it doesn’t get old
Van Halen actually sued Tone Loc. He didn't get permission nor even credited them on the song. Ed said as soon as he heard them drums, he instantly knew it was his brother and was like WTF.
The drummer, Alex, just changed the hi-hat to 16th notes, for those couple bars " she wants to send a letter" part, the rest of the song is eighth notes. Thats why it sounded like tambourine or maracas
Ted Templeman, the Producer stated in his book that the backing vocals were recorded with everyone around a single mic singing live harmonies. Dave, Mike (high parts), Eddie, and Ted. Mike would be lined up a few feet back because his voice was so loud.
Don Landee was their engineer for the first 6 albums and I’m pretty sure the first couple with Hagar. He was a master engineer and from what I’ve read he worked a lot with Edward in private away from everyone else. This is a great song and one of the only VH songs without a guitar solo. This album needed this song to complete the versatility of their artistry. Great reaction as always. You expose things in their music that I never noticed. And I’ve listened to these songs my whole life. Great job!
David Lee Roth once said ""We're the band that sold a Ricky Ricardo rumba in Jamie's Cryin'." Throw in the doo-wop barbershop quartet breakdown from "I'm The One" and you're starting to see what made Van Halen different.
This album was recorded in a couple weeks. They honed their chops in bars and backyard parties for years. Just had to set up mics and press the record button.
Here are the voices: David Lee Roth - Baritone Edward Van Halen - 2nd Tenor Michael Anthony - Incredible 1st Tenor - the most Iconic background vocalist ever. He is the high voice you hear. One of the biggest pieces to the Van Halen sound!!!!! Eddie Van Halen said his voice “has the range from Hell.”
Huge VH fan here. I saw the original lineup with Dave, and then the 5150 tour with Sammy. I always loved that Tone Loc sampled from this song. He also sampled Kiss and Foreigner for Funky Cold Medina. Dude - so happy that you're doing this VH journey.
You have to realize back in 1978 when I was in the sixth grade, and that album dropped on the jukebox in the rec room at summer camp that year, it dominated the jukebox. There was no other music that was played for the entire two weeks. Kids just kept dropping quarters in to hear that album, I’ve never seen anything like that since. I became a professional musician because of it. The instrument shaking in the bridge are sixteenth notes played on the high-hat .
I was 9 years old when my oldest brother brought this newly released album home and has us listen to Eruption for the insane guitars at the time. When he wasn't home, I'd pull out this record and drop the needle on Jamie's Crying and other songs, but mostly that one.
These early VH albums were mostly played live in studio with just minimal overdubs to add the second guitar, etc. Those vocal harmonies are most likely live full-takes. Amazing still today. Michael Anthony (bass player and main background vocal) doesn't get near enough credit for the "Van Halen" sound.
Yeah bro the sound engineering & mixers were really getting good at throwing Dolby stereo surround sound around in your head while jamming this tune with headphones back in the day. That entire album is a Rock classic that showcased VH's incredible talent. Great Pro reaction when you can point out the particular detail on the sound Engineer/Mixers slick additions.
This was always one of my faves. Sadly I've left it off Top 10 VH(Dave era) List the last 10yrs and shouldnt have. But already have Ain't Talkin Bout Love and Unchained from this album. My God i forgot how much i love it though 😢❤😢❤
The Van Halen background vocals are second to none of any band ever. It sums up that whole southern California fun vibe Michael Anthony and Edward together singing is magic
If you watch Van Halen live..the vocals are just as good ..sometimes better than the studio versions. They really made a point to make the live shows vocally and musically top notch. 👍😎🔥🔥🔥
That's crazy, I never knew about that Wild Thing sample but it's SO obvious - 2:15 I love this b-part (yeah that's the hi-hat) and the way it makes the rest of the song feel just slightly behind the beat in some sort of stomp. Vocals: Michael Anthony is just one hell of a backup singer. A little like Def Leppard, 3 of them can sing really well. I think it was also about 5 years ahead of it's time, 1978 is prime disco era, but it was a good year to be born if you want to become a musician: MTV came on 3 years later and there I was as a toddler in front of it, shit raised me.
Even when Dave would forget most of the words, Michael's voice sounded that way live as well. When Dave was on, the crispness of the harmonies on the record were that good live. For instant verification, swing through the OU812 album - with Sammy there were no limits on vocals OR harmonies. None whatsoever.
Great reaction. The mix was supposed to be simple, to mimic how someone would experience it live (guitar amp on one side) They put the main guitar on one side, but then added plate reverb to the other side in the mix. This song has a second guitar, which is on the other side.
Other than Van Halen's insane musical talent, the surprising secret about how this album was recorded is that it was recorded live, everyone in one room, with all the instruments and vocals bleeding into the other tracks. A beautiful mess! No one would have the courage to record an album this way now. Which is why no one now will ever sound half as raw and glorious as Van Halen. Simpler is better.
They had a 3-part harmony on record. Michael had the high-end, Dave in the middle and Eddie was the low-end. Michael & Dave drowned out Eddie on the surface, but, his low-end vocal punched-up to their overall harmony sound. But Live, Michael probably had the best backing vocals in rock music.
VH sued Tone Loc for lifting parts from this song and got a lot of money from royalties from Wild Thing. Just listen to the drum intro which was identical and then the overall structure and groove to Wild Thing.
I'm not sure exactly what auto tune is I'm old but back in the 60's and 70's it was just raw talent and hard work kind of strange to hear that word auto tune. I'm happy you discovered real music by real musicians nothing fake raw performances
There was a lot of work done by the studio that recorded this album.there is a short documentary on the making of the album.cant remember the name of the clip but it is on utube.if this album would have been recorded by any other studio the same way most rock is done Van Halen might not have got the tremendous Starr that they did!!!!
Jamie's Cryin' , didn't chart....what ??????...Damn I listen to the rock radio stations in Detroit , everyday at work,,,,and this song is a Staple Song...I hear Jamie's Crying 4 to 5 times a week !!! !Lot's of Van Halen out of Detroit....not much Van Hagar thou. ....But I hear ''Ain't Talking Bout Love'' the most...Then ''Jump''....Then ''Jamie's Crying''.........You might hear 3 Sammy songs all week...that's including Montrose !!!....They don't play I can't drive 55 anymore !!!
There was no auto tune in 1978…… just talent
There is auto tune since the 60s my friend
Love this Van Halen journey you are on. Brings me back to 1978 when I first heard this album. I ended up listening to this album every day that summer and to this day it doesn’t get old
These guys could harmonize very well, plus Michael Anthony was the secret ingredient that made many of their songs special and unique.
Ya. Wolfie is great and all, but I really wanted Michael on that Reunion Tour I saw here in Houston back in Sept 2015
Great comment!!
Yep, Michael Anthony was absolutely the secret ingredient. His voice MADE the harmonies. Really missed on the later tours.
Michael Anthony sang all the really high harmonies, he is a bad ass
Van Halen actually sued Tone Loc.
He didn't get permission nor even credited them on the song.
Ed said as soon as he heard them drums, he instantly knew it was his brother and was like WTF.
The drummer, Alex, just changed the hi-hat to 16th notes, for those couple bars " she wants to send a letter" part, the rest of the song is eighth notes. Thats why it sounded like tambourine or maracas
Such an underrated drummer. To me he never gets the love he deserved
This dude grew up in the drum machine/autotune era obviously 🤷🏽♂️
@@rothed16he’ll always be my GOAT ✌🏽
I dare any drummer to learn and keep up with " loss of control". So many time signatures changes, sounds like Rush
These background harmonies are absolutely amazing…such a timeless tune, with great production.
Esp in this song and with no real solo
Michael Anthony has the best back up vocals ever
Ted Templeman, the Producer stated in his book that the backing vocals were recorded with everyone around a single mic singing live harmonies. Dave, Mike (high parts), Eddie, and Ted. Mike would be lined up a few feet back because his voice was so loud.
No autotune, just the guys and a good engineering.
Don Landee was their engineer for the first 6 albums and I’m pretty sure the first couple with Hagar. He was a master engineer and from what I’ve read he worked a lot with Edward in private away from everyone else. This is a great song and one of the only VH songs without a guitar solo. They essentially recorded live. Eddie said if it didn't sound good coming out of that box it wasn't good enough
This album was recorded in a couple weeks. They honed their chops in bars and backyard parties for years. Just had to set up mics and press the record button.
Nice to see someone enjoying vanhalen. Shows how fucking awesome they were and still are. Michael Anthony's bass was right on cue. God bless vanhalen.
His back up vocals as well ,he was a huge part of Halen
Man, what memories! I was just a kid but the best music ever.
This song was and still is very much a staple of FM Radio.
Here are the voices:
David Lee Roth - Baritone
Edward Van Halen - 2nd Tenor
Michael Anthony - Incredible 1st Tenor - the most Iconic background vocalist ever. He is the high voice you hear. One of the biggest pieces to the Van Halen sound!!!!! Eddie Van Halen said his voice “has the range from Hell.”
That's just how damn good they were my Brother
Huge VH fan here. I saw the original lineup with Dave, and then the 5150 tour with Sammy. I always loved that Tone Loc sampled from this song. He also sampled Kiss and Foreigner for Funky Cold Medina. Dude - so happy that you're doing this VH journey.
Love how Eddie only found out by hearing Wild thing on the radio 😂
Live off the floor! absolutely one if not the best bands in history
So fresh and so clean.
Love Jamie's Crying. The harmonies and lead riff are amazing. Hearing it live is amazing
You have to realize back in 1978 when I was in the sixth grade, and that album dropped on the jukebox in the rec room at summer camp that year, it dominated the jukebox. The instrument shaking in the bridge are sixteenth notes played on the high-hat .
The harmonizing was really a joint effort for the VH boys, but Michael Anthony (bassist) made the difference in making a stellar sound.
This is my all time favorite by them.
I saw these guys in concert in the Netherlands back when I was a junior in high school 1978. Brings back memories.
Killer bass line!!
sound art. well put.
I was 9 years old when my oldest brother brought this newly released album home and has us listen to Eruption for the insane guitars at the time. When he wasn't home, I'd pull out this record and drop the needle on Jamie's Crying and other songs, but mostly that one.
lead guitar, bass, and drums. thats all they needed. if you ever heard them in concert back in the day, you would understand
Yes Friend!

That's just Alex doing 16th notes with both hands on the hi-hats
@Mugnify Reacts Seems like you have good taste in music. This song is crazy good. It COULD be my favorite Van Halen song
This was always one of my faves. Sadly I've left it off Top 10 VH(Dave era) List the last 10yrs and shouldnt have. But already have Ain't Talkin Bout Love and Unchained from this album. My God i forgot how much i love it though 😢❤😢❤
Great song! Cant wait to see you react to the whole Van Halen catalog! Even Van Hagar, don’t sleep on them!
The Van Halen background vocals are second to none of any band ever. It sums up that whole southern California fun vibe
Michael Anthony and Edward together singing is magic
I watched videos from Sunset Sounds TH-cam channel on VH. Eddie liked hooking up mics to the left and right channels to get that sound.
Wow! That’s good to know thank you
@@MugnifyRTS I'm glad you're enjoying VH's music. It's so good and ages like fine wine.
The guitar sounds like it's saying UH OOOOH, after "Jaimie's Cryin'"
If you watch Van Halen live..the vocals are just as good ..sometimes better than the studio versions. They really made a point to make the live shows vocally and musically top notch. 👍😎🔥🔥🔥

That sound is Alex playing a roll on the hi hat cymbals. Sounds similar to a tambourine.
Very cool song. Wore that tape out.
Dave gets half the recognition, here, IMHO.
This album changed the way lead guitars wud be played forever.
Even when Dave would forget most of the words, Michael's voice sounded that way live as well. When Dave was on, the crispness of the harmonies on the record were that good live. The shaking is hi hats on double time. 1/16th notes
One Word MA!!
Go go go Mugsy!!!
Hi -hat cymbal
Thanks for answering that
That "little extra riff" is what
Tone Loc sampled! Jus say'n
Edit: he's saying
"Then one last dance"
Great reaction. The mix was supposed to be simple, to mimic how someone would experience it live (guitar amp on one side) They put the main guitar on one side, but then added plate reverb to the other side in the mix. This song has a second guitar, which is on the other side.

Yip, Fil has been peppered with my old rock - it’s now going to be your turn!!😂😂
If there existed a Background Vocals Hall of Fame Michael Anthony should be a first-ballot member.
...next up:"Atomic Punk".....your gonna like it Mugs, great show Brother.
How can you expect the single to go high on the chart when everyone already bought the album at that point in time?
All kinds of layers of sound..listen at him sing vocals with that lead guitar, and cow bell at the end
Autotune was invented in mid 90's by Andy Hildebrand, so that is not in the picture here..nice reaction as always.
I know that but I just wanted to make sure people dont get what Im saying confused with autotune.
Eddie was a modern day motzart
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

The squealin screechin evh opening

So, the real question is, is Van Halen making your everyday playlist and are you officially a Van Halen fan? ;).
You have to understand Eddie was just that much better than anyone else
If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, listen to his interviews with jas obrecht on talking guitar with jas obrecht
I'm not sure exactly what auto tune is I'm old but back in the 60's and 70's it was just raw talent and hard work kind of strange to hear that word auto tune. I'm happy you discovered real music by real musicians nothing fake raw performances
Love watching these reactions. This isn't the last song on the album. You still have to do atomic punk and ice cream man
Pop doo wop metal, with the greatest guitar.

Ear candy!
Michael Anthony = Harmonies
Hopefully, you'll cover Van Halen's "Diver Down" album
@@KimoNani-m6z already did but I’ll be posting the individual videos soon
They, probably, considered this song "misogynistic". Against the agenda.
Therefore, muted.
Can't wait till you get to Ice cream man✌️
Tone loc sampled the riff without permission and got sued
It's the hi hats set loose.
DIDN'T VAN HALEN HAVE A SONG WHERE THEY ONLY SUNG 1 WORD "HIGH"?
They sang those vocals back in the day. 🙄
Now he should start listening to the next kine up of Van Haggar and David Lee Roth Band. Then Mammoth Wolfgang Van Halen band. Eddie's son
A great and under appreciated Van Halen song, if you would like to check out is Without You.
