2005 BMW X3 clicking noise during initial acceleration - bad drive shaft center mount

  • My e83 X3 started to make a clicking noise accelerating from a dead stop. the noise disappeared after getting to a steady speed. Rebuilt the transfer case as many youtube videos suggested. then replaced it with another transfer case. the noise is still there. Upon inspecting the drive shaft, I found out that the center mount was bad. The bearing was halfway detached from the center mount and it was not moving freely. There were some challenges getting the bearing out also. Bought a bearing puller set and it took just a few minutes to get it out. New center mount will be here in a couple of days. I will provide an update once it is replaced whether it fixes the issue or not.
    8/27/2018 yes the center mount was indeed the cause of the clunking noise. The part got here last night and I installed it today. The noise is gone!

    Hoping this is the cause, or at least one, of the clunks coming from mine as well. Thanks for the details and keeping your finding updated!

    Could this happen in a landrover discovery 3 my is iv change the front drive shafts coz it sounds like it was coming from them but its not them it only cloncks at slow speeds 1st and 2 when i get to about 30 it goes away

      I am not familiar with your vehicle but the symptom is very much the same. If something in the front to back drive train is loose, it will make some noise at low speed as it's trying to send the power to the back wheels. Once the wheels are spinning and getting up the speed, the noise will go away. So I would suggest you take a look the components of the drive train, including the drive shaft center mount and see if you can find the loose part. It might well be the same cause. Good luck! Please post your update as well so others in the future can learn as well. Thanks!

    I thought I would share my current situation. '08 X3 E83 similar shudder @ around 15 on through about 30mph. Seemed like it was behind the center console. I replaced the Center Support Bearing. It was badly torn up. But, it did not solve my problem. I still have shudder, although it feels differently now, I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel, heavily when I brake and even more when I am turning and braking. I feel as though it is drive train and or suspension related. I did not check the Flex coupler aka "Guibo" I heard someone say that you should replace both items CSB & Guibo as they are both rubber similarly and might be bad even though you cannot see it as clearly as the CSB. Take two screw drivers and put them in the holes of the Guibo and gently pry away from each other. If you see cracks appear, replace it for sure. I am really not sure if this will solve the issue. I feel like struts and shocks could be a contributor. ?? I saw a video where he had changed out a bad CSB that did not solve his issue. He then changed the drive shaft CV joint and that appeared to solve the problem. I am feeling as though it is a front side issue issue more than rear. But when I change Guibo, I will check out all of the above and see if anything else is apparent. If you have any happy news of a solution... please share. I will post the results here as they occur.

      Thanks for sharing your experience! I was lucky enough that replacing the CSB solved my problem. Taking a look at the Guibo sounds like the logical next step. Please keep us posted on your findings. Thanks!

    Oh man I saw the title and was so excited it is the only video that actually talks about what my x3 is doing! I hear many other things but I knew it was either bent drive shaft or the bearing/flex disk. Thanks so much for video!!! Please hit me back so I can ask a few questions. TIA.

    Hello New Cavemen, I bought BMW 320d Coupe , 2004, from my friend recently and he told me there is a sound coming from under the car, but It can only be clearly heard when you drive near a wall or something (so the sound can bounce off the wall and you can hear it louder). Its happening when I`m in 1st gear and im accelerating from a dead stop, for like 5 seconds then when im in 2nd gear it disappears I guess. But, when im going in reverse it is much louder, I can clearly hear it inside the cabin with closed windows, also for like 5 seconds while im releasing the clutch, but later when the car goes full speed in reverse (without pressing the gas pedal) , it kinda disappears. So basically , i can hear it only while the car is accelerating in reverse , it sounds like metal chains are ..... ummmm.... hitting each other...ummm.... like you are swinging two chains and they hit each other...ummm.. its like a metal sound for few seconds only... I hope you understand me. Brother, please tell me if this was the same sound like your, because I truly want to keep this beauty and im afraid if the differential is getting old or something. This video gives me hope that its actually just some rubber part.

      From what you described, it definitely seems like the same problem I had with my car. It all makes sense now because if the center mount and the bearing inside worn out, it cannot keep the drive shaft center on a straight line. So when the car tries to accelerate from a dead stop, the drive shaft wobbles inside the center mount and makes that horrible noise. But once it gets moving, the drive shaft centers itself because of the central fugal force and won’t wobble as much. With that said, you still need to prove the theory by disassemble the under guard, exhaust pipes, drive shaft etc to see if the center mount and the bearing inside is indeed falling apart. Overall not a particularly difficult job if you have worked on cars before. Good luck and thanks for watching! Please share your findings!

    Awesome. Working on the wires E83 today and she was having the same issues. I thought it was the transfer case, then the diff mounts, then the transfer case actuator gear. She has the 4x4, ABS, brake lights on the dash but they go away after you drive above 30mph for a few minutes. I got under there and check this mount after watching this video and as soon as I pulled back the shields, I had rubber rings falling out and yup, that mount is shot.

    • @newcavemen6682
      @newcavemen6682  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      if those three lights are on and makes a few clinking noises after shut off, then your transfer case actuator gear is worn out. it happened to me as well, once i replaced the actuator gear, the issue went away.

      My car made such noise while accelerating from a stand still. Does your car do that? I don't remember if it does the same stopping though. Probably not much because stopping a car is mostly done by applying the brakes.

      Not sure how to answer your question because it depends on your experience. If you are like me who has spent quite some time around your own cars in the last couple of years, it is not a difficult job but it's not an easy job either. Here are the high level steps I went through:
      - drove car up kwik-lift (that's just what i have; you can also just jack it up). you need space under the car to work. be safe!
      - removed front part of exhaust system. let it hung from the back and pushed out out of the way
      - removed heat shield
      - removed center mount bolts
      - saw rubber around bearing cracked open so knew it had to be replaced
      - removed the bolts holding guibo to transfer case
      - used pry bar to separate drive shaft from transfer case
      - removed the retainer and then the front drive shaft. there is also a clip ring but i can't remember the exact order
      - center mount doesn't look like its going to come out so I had to buy a set of bearing separator puller set to take it out. any job has some surprise that ended up costing more time and money and this was the case here.
      - installed the new center mount, clip ring and retainer (don't forget these; i did and i had to redo it)
      - installed front drive shaft
      - installed guibo bolts
      - installed heat shield
      - installed front exhaust pipes
      Good luck!

    • @newcavemen6682
      @newcavemen6682  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's been a while but i remembered there was some vibration associated with the clunking noise that seemed to go from back to the front (or the other way) during initial acceleration. once it got to higher ans steady speed, the noise went away.

      @@newcavemen6682 Thanks buddy. I just found that my rear U Joints are shot but fronts seem good. For anyone checking U Joints on these vehicles, Jack one wheel up with car in neutral and turn the wheel and look at the joints that way. Use jack stands, Never trust a Jack! If there is any play, there bad. Also, I had a reddish rusty dust on the bad one. It's hard to tell if bad with car or truck on pavement. I figure I'm getting the front vibration through the rear worsening and gets worse the more I drive and apply gas.
      Hopefully Transfer case is not bad. Thx again...
