After 30+ years of shaving with a disposable razor, I've decided to try Henson, I never used a safety razor before, and my expectations were low I mean how much better can it be, right? Was I wrong that thing is as smooth as butter!! No more disposable for me!!

Just followed this whole video for my first ever shave with a double edge razor.
    Fantastic tutorial sir
    I used a Rockwell 6S.
    Started with a 1 - couldn't get a the razor to cut
Went to a lvl 2 and started feeling and hearing the razor do it's work.
Did a second pass on lvl 3 VERY LIGHTLY around my mustache and chin hairs.
    SUCCESS !!!
some slight stinging on my upper lip / mustache when applying my after shave. But no nics, no cuts.
I would say this first attempt is a success.
Thanks for posting this great beginner tutorial

My father died when I was young so I never had his shaving advice.
I’ve hated shaving since I was old enough to shave. But I’ve always used disposable razors. After watching this video I ordered a Henson with a Gillette platinum blade. Bought the pre-shave oil, alum bar, Nivea shave balm and the best thing ever… the witch Hazel after shave.
Wow. First time my face didn’t wind up feeling like a red hot, bumpy sunburn. It was actually a pleasant experience. Big thanks!

Thanks for sharing your findings. I used different oils as preshaver. Almond oil was fantastic. But what i want to share with you is that glycerine is the KING. Why? It is the best lubricant and one of the best moisturisers. Most importantly, by using glycerine razor blades last longer. Even blades are not sharp enough glycerine stick arround facial hair helping the blade to cut....to cut deep.😊

I am not exactly a beginner with wet shaving, nor am I an expert. I have stages where I will shave for a few months, and stages where I will just let my beard grow for a few months. I go back and forth like that a lot. Right now I'm in a shaving phase. I felt the need to watch this video and I'm glad I did. I've never tried going across the grain with a double edge razor. This video clearly shows going with and across the grain, and I was able to study what you did. That helps me. Also I appreciate your using different razors. I paid a lot of attention to that. I am not sure my Merkur razor is best for me and my skin...maybe I need a higher end razor. I also like the Simpson brush you are using. Perhaps my shaving satisfaction will increase as I get myself better quality equipment. This video is most helpful to me. Thank you for posting it!

Really VERY helpful tips and advice! Thank you. My journey in shaving with a safety razor started today although I found your channel and a few others a couple days ago. I've been a "cartridge critter" and 'lectric larry for more than 4 decades now and while I could manage a pretty close shave it was always "something you just do" and not engaged in. Only one nick and that was in a place I could manage to nick even with an electric foil razor. I'll be checking out your earlier videos this weekend - again, thank you for all the great advice!

Great Video Ive been a cartridge shaver. I think it was a generation thing. I havnt figured out if Im stupid or cheap, I only change the cartridge twice a year and my facial hair is like barbed wire. I ordered the 6s havnt used it yet, I kept seeing the supply se, I ordered that and Im so impressed with it, I dont hear much of nothing wondering about results, the biggest thing is the way hair just dissappears no build up on blade. I need to break out the rockwell. Im experimenting right now, matter of fact I have a 12/8 near wedge and 8/8 1/4 hollow straight razors coming. Those might just be display items.

Got my first bbs shave this morning because of this vid. Painting and then blooming the shave soap on the face was particularly helpful.
I'm new to DE shaving (about a month now) and I'm just using a crappy Weishi butterfly razor. BUT, I picked up a blade variety pack and the first one used was the Gillette Silver Blue. I think it made a huge difference compared to the
Zomchi blades that I've been using. Anyway, thank you showing me the ways!

Shaved without the oil and just the leaf soap few small red bits on Adams apple and under my lip as I shaved down vs across like you did...
Still face is smooth and no razor burn... I waiting on oil and the skin cream you showed but figured hey I would try without them so I can feel the difference when they arrive...

Great video! I am totally in with a Rockwell 6C from a cartridge razor. My first shave last night. How do you rinse the razor during the shave? I noticed when I rinsed the razor that it was gumming up. I rinsed in my shaving bowl and also under running water. My routine was 1) Stirling Pre-shave soap Mentholated 2) Stirling Executive Man - Shave Soap 3) 6C with a #3 block and a Astra Platinum blade. 4) Alum Block 5) THAYERS Facial Toner 6) Nivea 7) Disassemble the razor for cleaning. The shave was average, with only a few very small knicks. I have a few hot spots on the neck, but overall, way better than I thought it would be. I tend to shave twice a week, giving my skin some time to recover. During the downtime, I use oils, and I will introduce the new toner and Nivea into my recovery routine. For my next shave, I will use a #4 block and NACET blade.
Question, do you store your blade in your razor or remove it? If you remove it, how do you store the single loose blade?

    • @OhioShaves
      @OhioShaves  ปีที่แล้ว

You may have to add more water to your face if the soap is coming up in your razor. Sounds like it may be a little too thick and needs more water. I do remove the blade from the razor every time and leave it on a hand towel to dry along with the razor.

  • @BartBuzz

An excellent, detailed tutorial. Your video should be very helpful to anyone new to traditional safety razor shaving. For beginners, I would recommend not doing a 3-pass shave. Just shave with the grain and across the grain until the skin gets accustomed to the razor. The alum block is the one post-shave item I would highly recommend as well. It's an excellent astringent for skin cells to help prevent irritation. But it's a misnomer to say that cold water and/or alum "close" the pores. Skin pores are always open. The one safety razor I always recommend to newbies is the Rockwell 6C. It's like getting six safety razors in one and allows the user to dial in the most comfortable shave that works for them. New shavers should really appreciate what you did by putting out this video. Kudos.

Those are all great razors… however you should’ve also said or included price and accessibility. As the ones you mentioned are pricey.
For the accessibility the Gillette King C is a good choice, i would prefer Van der Hagen because made in Germany. You can buy them literally anywhere. The King C is a DE 3 piece system, and Van Der Hagen is a butterfly TTO.
Soaps and the brush is the hard part to obtain, as they are only online for what i have seen ( in my area anyway )
But yea good beginners guide for the well off ones.

When you have a dimple in your chin straight razor kills it..I like the swivel on the leaf for that spot and twig for touch up.. 2nd pass twig with parker blade.. working on what 3 different blades to use in leaf.. parker 1st and nacet 2nd.. that's all I use..but was thinking 3rd spot putting a sharp cheaper blade like derby premium

Amazing video man. Really detailed and easy to understand video for beginners , i wish i found something like this when i started safety razor journey.
Today i accidentally found my first DE razor that i ever tried , it was that cheap plastic one Wilkinson Sword Classic and i remember even tho it was so cheap you could really feel difference between that and mach3 that i used before that. Have you tried that plastic Wilkinson Sword?
And how would you compare Gillette Platinum vs Nacet blades in terms of sharpness?
    Have a good one , cheers 👊

I haven't tried to Wilkinson sword razor. The Platinum blades are sharper than the nacet's. Better quality control as well. I had to throw several away in the first 20 or so out of my 100 pack.

Alright did my first shave with a safety razor. Think I didn't remove enough water from the brush before I went into the puck.
Started off with the 1 plate on my 6C. Wasn't really cutting so I decided to jump up to the 3. I got only one weeper, but I was only shaving my neck and some of my cheek, because my grandma complains if I shave off my beard. Shaved a little more than I planned and probably used too much pressure.
Overall I liked the experience. Used Leaf Shave Oil, Taylor shaving cream, T3 brush, Parker Alum Block, Thayers, and Rockwell Post-Shave.
Do you rinse the shaving cream off between each shave pass or did I do it wrong?
How much of Thayers should I use?
Any variety pack of blades you recommend? I used the blade that came with the 6C. Of course affiliate link please.

I figured I would post this since it is in the beginners guide. Im new and my 3rd attempt to shave and I noticed that the lather on my face felt sticky and the cream was gunking up in the Rockwell T2. I cleaned everything off and tried again with different soap and same experience. Have you had this before? Im wondering if maybe the water to soap raito was not enough. I havent had enough face growth to try again just yet.

    • @OhioShaves
      @OhioShaves  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great question. Add more water lots of water to the tips of the brush and keep lathering till the soap pops into a great lather. I used to practice at night with the brush on my head and face just to get more experience on how much soap and how much water to add to my face. This worked great for me you might wanna give that a try as well.

@@OhioShaves you were on the money. Today I shaved but I did a few passes and while it was better than last time it still wasn't too great. I and got more water and pow. Now I know what consistency to look for. That was a night and day shave. If it's not a great lather it's like it's working against you. Stopping your blade from making smooth passes. When it's correct it's like a slip n slide the blade just wants to go and you have to stop it.
