Kirby, in case you read the comments, thanks for what you do. As someone who grew up without a father, I was never taught things such as shaving, or dressing well as a gentleman. These are things I've had to learn myself, and watching your videos helps greatly. Not only do you explain things well, you also exemplify why these things are important. Thanks for the life lessons
When I was young chile, my dad used to shave my grandfather because he had had a stroke and didn't have coordination. One time, my grandpa was waiting to be shaved and my dad sent me in with a straight razor. My grandfather practically jumped out of his seat and said "No! No!" then laughed because he got the joke.
Immortal I just don’t think any of you would have watched the video... 😂 When I don’t have one of the kids hanging on a leg or am not running out of the house to get the kids to school on time, I do occasionally wear the robe. The shirt and tie was to save myself the future blackmail material. Anyone who thinks I’d film a video of myself shaving without a shirt and then post it on the internet clearly has never published a video on TH-cam before. 😂
One more note: wet shaving, along with shoe shining, taking care of ones clothes, enjoying a scotch and a fine cigar. All of these endeavors require time. A person's life / house must be in order to allow one the time to pursue and appreciate these gentlemanly endeavors. It's not about the priceless shoes or suits, but rather the pursuit of happiness. Cheers Kirby. Steve
Quite well, ole chap! And do note that a fine haircut can take nearly an hour. It would be a commitment to time and quality, and not to the buffoonery that most people are content with. Cherio
For that technique you’re best off with a Fortnum & Mason linen shower suit and a silk paisley tie. Pair with a nice summer croc to add a smart/casual edge if you have shower company.
You inspired me to find my old safety razor and start using it again. I couldn't agree with you more, the experience was a treat and the shave lasts 2 days rather than 12hrs like with my 5 cartridge razor.
I love how slow these videos are. It's so much more relaxing to watch his content than these other channels like alpham and realmenrealstyle. I feel like Kirby Allison is a much nicer pace.
I stopped shaving while wearing a tie and silk dressing gown back in August of 1914 - life in the trenches just wasn’t conducive that sort of thing. Somehow, I never came back to the habit after the War (I suppose that things were never again as civilized as during the Belle Époque of our youth). I had a surge of nostalgia after watching this; it put me in mind to return to my Edwardian morning routine! Why not? - life is short...
For those thinking of getting into wet shaving, might I recommend a synthetic bristle brush as opposed to badger, boar, etc. Natural animal hair brushes tend to smell like wet animal for the first few weeks of use depending on frequency. Synthetic bristles hold water just as well as a good quality badger hair brush and tend to be cheaper without sacrificing quality. Also, most animal hair brushes aren’t the most ethically sourced if you care about that (badger especially where the animal is often killed for the pelt). Or don’t it’s really your choice. Thanks for introducing more people to the world of wet shaving!
Good point made even tough the point for the smell is not really bad because you'll get rid of the smell within a couple of weeks and the synthetic brushes tend to break more easily on the hairs. But yes, you gotta pick the good brand that don't use necessarily the animal only for brushes purposes.
@@teabaggervance8 Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements has a great selection of gluten-free synthetic brushes. Your cousin’s friend might want to look into that… 😂
Nice video, lots of good tips. I can add a few to shorten the learning curve for anyone starting out, and I recommend wet shaving for everyone. I have a heavy beard and moderately sensitive skin, so I have to be more careful than many people. Here are a few things that work for me : - I try to shave after a shower. This softens the beard, moisturises the skin, and means you can skip the first step of wetting the beard, hot towels, etc. - I rinse out the razor quite often, as the cut hair clogs to the razor and breaks contact between the blade and the skin. - I prefer creams to hard soaps, i get just as good lather and it takes a lot less time than soaps to work the lather up - I create the lather directly on my face, saves needing a bowl, and it works just as well, especially with a cream if you don't use soap. - I really try to avoid going over any area more than once each pass, using short strokes it's tempting to go over the same place a few times with each pass, but if your really just use short strokes while moving on all the time you'll reduce the damage to your skin, chances of getting nicks, and irritation. Trust the blade and let your next pass do the work. - Finally, really get to know your beard direction, and go sideways to it on your second pass. If this doesn't h^give you a close enough shave, use a third pass, but with a good blade you get incredibly close shaves just on two passes, if you get the direction right. Going upwards or against the grain is really hard on your skin, you should be absolutely sure you need, to, have fresh cream on your face ti do it, and use zero pressure. Good luck and have fun, nothing beats a wet shave with a safety razor or a straight razor! BTW I use Feather blades, but with a feather razor. The combination works great, but i wouldn't use Feather blades in a more aggressive razor as I'd probably slice my face to ribbons. The Feather razor makes it hard t nick yourself, but you have ti get the shaving angle exactly right for it to cut. It's a great way to use a crazy sharp blade with reduced risk. The Feather razor is crazy expensive but like anything else, it is worth the extra coin if the quality is there and it lasts forever. They are based on the old Gilette classic models, but with better balance and tolerances.
A good shaving foam is a perfect blend of water and shaving soap. It is an emulsion between the two. In the video the lather is weak, it does not protect well and it shows later you have blood spots. The shaving soaps have voluntarily too much fat to help the razor glide and moisturize the skin against the aggression of the blade. Shaking the razor in a bowl of water is enough to clean it, no need to waste thousands of liters of water to rinse the razor. Words of a man who shaves in 3 passes 7 days a week.
I bought my first safety razor when I was nearing the end of high school, and I can now say several years later that it was easily one of the greatest hygiene decisions I have ever made.
I've shaved in the shower for years - lots of hot water and my face is already soaking wet and soft. Plus I'm totally cleaned up when I'm done. And no watery mess on the vanity counter.
Well if you’re smart and a real human, you shave in the shower lol. I ain’t got time for all that every day.. well I have the time but I’d rather be doing ANYTHING else than shaving
Just switched to a safety razor and won't ever go back to the multi blades! Never thought I'd use the same type of instrument to shave, that my Grandfather used back in the day. Excellent video, Kirby!
Many years ago i used a safty razor, but never really got great results, i believe it was lack of face prep, and correct products, this video was an "eye opener" , i do believe it's time to revisit, and utilizing your products, thank you kirby, great video.!!🙏
Like to shave right after a hot shower also use a alum bar before my after shave balm to get feed back about my shaving. Lastly I store my brush on a stand to dry knot down. Your a gentleman of many wonderful interstates. Thanks Kirby
Like the tips, I'm an avid wet shaver as well. I add one step to the morning routine: sideburn squaring and grooming, and visible neck-collar hairs. Thanks for the product summaries.
Kirby, you are a total champion. I found your channel by trying to learn about finding good shoes at a thrift store. The best part of your production is that you are the epitome of a Gentleman, but clearly Not Gay. I am a 51 year-old dude on a budget, and your videos have helped me present myself in a manner that exudes confidence. Thank you.
You somehow have perfect timing. I recently decided to start wet shaving because I am tired of the occasional razor bumps and burns. This is very helpful.
Alexander Soto bro check out these youtubers KenSurfs KevyShaves PaulHfilms And GeoFatboy i’ve been watching him for about 10 months now and I love it I have a 1964 Gillette Slim Adjustable a 1949 SuperSpeed a Shavette and a Merkur Future No love the same soaps brushes and all the good stuff but don’t get overwhelmed just get what you need first
I tend to shave with my balls hanging out of my skid marked boxer shorts, but I do try to have a windsor knot in my silk tie just to keep up appearances
@@aaronholmes8568 Shipping time of over a week and over quadruple the retail price is absolutely not convenience. I can do my own research and come up with the same brands he promotes, but with personal reviews from hundreds of people on niche websites and forums. Stick with this prick if you’re lazy as fuck, I guess.
@@lakerfan82k3 personally I don't shop with him because I'm in the UK, and I have my own sources for blades etc. I'd agree that someone would be more than able to do their own research and come to other suppliers, but I also respect the fact he's a businessman first and foremost.
Thank you so much for this! I bought an expensive straight razor a couple of months ago and had a terrible time with it, but your video helped me to do a proper shave with it this morning! Got some nicks but oh well. My technique needs work around my chin especially and I need to get a better angle but it’s much more comfortable now. Your sideways recommendation was brilliant. Thank you! ❤️
You may want to consider a vintage razor. I am fortunate in that I use the the same razor my father was issued in the Navy during the Korean War. It is 70 years old and going strong.
Yeah. My start up cost was literally 3 dollars to get a few blades and the razor itself. I had to restore it a little but its damage was all aesthetic and cleanliness stuff. Well worth the money.
I've just switched to a safety razor as woman and it honestly has been a lot easier than I thought it would be, a few tiny little Knicks on the knees and such but it's been so simple. I just have a lot of trouble taking the razor apart to change the blade
i came back to this video - because 2 years ago i stumbled upon it by accident (I am now a subscriber since) but after watching this video i dumped my Mach 3 cartridge razor i dumped the gels and foams i bought myself a Merkur 34c razor and a pack of 100 astra Green blades and a badger brush, got myself some TOBS soaps/creams and some proraso soaps and creams and some witch hazel and an Alum Block - i now absolutely love shaving and dont look upon it as the chore it used to be - Thanks Kirby
I like to use a scented alcohol aftershave then use an after shave lotion. I find it really helps prevents breakouts on my skin and moisturizes it so it’s not dry
A very nice tutorial. Those of us who have migrated from multi blade razors to our father’s razor have found that each routine is a set of individual choices depending on such factors as skin sensitivity, beard strength and beard orientation. There are plenty of choices and methods to deal with our particular anatomy and skin. I use the Astra and Parker blades, a Mercury 34C and a slant razor and pig bristle brushes (I alternate all the above.). It does take technique and practice, but once you get it down, it takes only a little more time than a slap and dash can of foam and multi-blade razor with a much better outcome. I will never go back to the inadequate shave I had with the multi blade razors. There are plenty of videos and other assets on the net if you are interested.
Today I just saw a safety razor while I was shopping and bought it to try it out to replace it with the multi-blade razors that I have been using my whole life. I always used to shave in the direction against my beard and with hand soap lol, it was quick, easy, and efective. I think I realized that I am being to aggresive and irresponsible with my skins treatment, so thats why I am going to try to have a nice morning routine regarding my facial hygene. Thank you for emphasizing that everyone has different ways to shave depending on eachs skin, I was so confused trying to shave like him and try harder because it didn't work, so I ended up cutting myself :')
I quit shaving years ago and bought a beard trimmer. I use it every couple weeks. I also use said beard trimmer to shave my cat's ass when dingleberries start sticking to him.
Friend got me into wet shaving a few years ago, vintage stuff is really good for this sort of thing, as before the modern era safety razor's did not cost hundreds of dollars to get a good one. Picked up a 50s era Gillette safety razor that works brilliantly and an Old Spice shaving cup to build a good lather. Both for under $30. Another item some people I've seen use (and I may get one myself one of these days) is a scuttle, its like a kettle for your shaving cream to keep it hot.
9:48 "Normally I have my man here to help catch any shave cream that might get on my robe, but I gave him the day off." 😂 I love the dry humor. Thanks for the Adam's apple trick. I'd never thought of pulling the skin to the sides to avoid actually going right over it.
Since I was in my teens, I've never been able to shave my face with a razor because it would end up being very painful until the hair grew back out a bit. Had to attend an event with some extended family I haven't seen in a long time a few days ago and wanted to look nice. The hot towel, short strokes against the grain, manipulating the skin, and a post-shave cold towel followed by a balm with aloe vera made a world of difference. I was using Barbasol and a cheap disposable Bic razor too. Think now I'll invest in a proper wet shave kit. Thanks for the great videos, Kirby.
Would like to add that shaving does also require detail on the hygiene side. Always wash your hands before shaving to avoid bacteria on a freshly shaved skin.
Hi Kirby, Great video, but the only issue I have is with using a sink for your brush and water to rinse your face. Not clean enought and likely bacteria-filled. Better to use a bowl or just running water right out of the faucet.
I like shaving with hard pine soap. I stuff it into my great-grandfather's shaving mug and build a lather in there. I have only shaved with my other great-grandfather's straight razor a couple times. I usually use a vibrating cartridge razor because it makes the strokes super short and quick. Mach 3 cartridges only have 3 blades and cost maybe 50 cents each. Didn't care when I tried a safety razor, but I was using feather blades. Also- where did you get a paisley bathrobe? I love paisley, and that silk material looks comfortable
A well weight balanced razor and a sharp blade make all the difference in wet shaving. I have been using and Edwin Jagger DE89 for 9 years and love it. The chrome on the razor is the same chrome Rolls Royce uses on their vehicles. Very handsome razor and shaves like a dream. I recommend it.
Astra Greens are actually typically under $10 for a sleeve of 100. Love the creams mentioned here. The Castle Forbes lime is fantastic. The TOBS Royal Forest is super slick and smells like Creed Aventus. I have the razor he uses here. It is too aggressive for my skin. I prefer a razor with neutral blade exposure and a substantial gap. The RazoRock Game Changer .84 is slightly more expensive than the Muhle razors featured at Hanger Project but they are for me the minimum standard of construction. The Muhle R41 in this video is made of chrome or nickel plated zinc alloy. Nothing wrong with it. But the Game Changer is individually machined from marine grade stainless steel. That’s why it costs more ($55). It is much friendlier to beginners as well as seasoned wet shaving veterans with sensitive skin. Another trick you can use that will enhance your shave, protect you from cuts and really give your skin amazing post shave feel is to apply a thin layer of Palmolive shaving stick (an inexpensive shaving soap in stick form) to your whiskers as a pre-shave, then swirl your cream from the tub as normal. Apply the cream in a thin layer directly to your face over the pre-shave soap, then dip the tips of your brush in water and work the whole thing into a lather directly on your face. Your brush will hold more than enough lather for 3 passes plus cleanup. By combining the skin protection and nourishing properties of a high quality soap like Palmolive with the amazing scent and slickness of a high quality shaving cream, you will get some of the best shaves of your life. I really like Royal Forest and also TOBS Grapefruit cream. Both work wonderfully with a Palmolive preshave to produce the best shaves I’ve ever had.
DeathInvestigator Feathers are great too. I use them often. Always good to find another blade that works for you. Lots of guys like the Astra Greens. A third of the price of Feather. But even popular blades don’t work for everybody. Try them before buying a full sleeve.
Both razors are made of (plated) Zamak, which is certainly not as durable or strong as steel. Doesn't mean though that they can't last a lifetime with the proper care. I find the first one too aggressive for my taste (Muhle R41 if I'm not mistaken) but the second one (Merkur 39c Slant) is a personal favorite. Fantastic razor!
@ I don’t think so but please double check. Also, Muhle Rocca is a fantastic stainless steel razor, albeit not as aggressive as R41 (which is good from my point of view).
@TheOriginalFSword you helped me bite thr bullet and Ive been contemplating buying the Rocca this week, however was worried it would be like the R41(nightmare for headshaving) even with a dovo blade
Enjoy watching the shaving and different steps it takes. Reminds me of different hair products for dry or frizzy, lack of moisture. I use herbal or seasonings and stimulate the brain at same time. Plus inexpensive to use.🙏📖😇
I don't agree with much of what Kirby does in this video for his shave, BUT to each their own. Everyone enjoys shaving in their own way and if he enjoys this then great for him. Also, I may need to start wearing a tie when I shave.
Disassemble and thoroughly dry your razor and blade; Drying those, will extend the blade's 'life' by as much was 5 times the normal. I'm on the same blade for the past six years, and still as keen as the first day.
I tried this with my old cartridge shaver and the same blade lasted for 5 months until I swapped recently to a safety razor. It's a revelation. Bearing in mind what happened with that cartridge, I think that yours is very good advice.
I have 3 comments to make. This video will inspire men to get into the world of wet shaving. For deep diving in the subject, there are many videos available on TH-cam. Even our style icon James Bond does not shave with his suite on. This is a bit too much. Being a gentleman is not only about looking good but also about being responsible towards the use of limited resources we have; water in this case. When many of our fellow human beings are dying without drinking water, it seemed almost a crime when you left the tap water running. I am into wet shaving for 20+ years now and I get good results with 1 mug of hot/warm water. I am not criticising you but I am trying to say that when we are in a position of influencing people, we need to be extra cautious to cover all these aspects. Thanks for your videos. Keep inspiring people.
I use a Merkur razor with feather blades and Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Cream. I made the switch from standard men's razors a little over a year ago and it's so much easier, faster, closer, and more pleasant. I will never go back. My goal is to learn how to use a straight razor without passing out from blood loss.
What a great channel. I am still using the Schick DE safety razor that my father gave me back in 1971. I have others, too, like a couple of old brass Gillette safety razors. Oh, I buy Astras on Amazon; I just now placed an order for 100 for $15.35 including shipping. [March 2023] That's a deal! --Old Guy
You are right: there's no point in getting an expensive badger brush while continuing to use cartridge razors. Quite on the contrary: If you don't feel ready to go all in with your investment: get a good safety razor first (like the Mühle or Merkur that Kirby uses). That's the thing that really wins people over to traditional shaving. Great video, Kirby! Love your dressing gown - may I ask about the brand/tailor? Greetings from Germany
my man Kirby i use gillette mach 5 and let me tell you never had a bloody face and forget about the wet towel lose the tie and shave in the shower !!! But i love every video ,keep the good work !!!
I used to shave in the shower. Now I get up 10-15 minutes earlier to get a better experience with better products for better results and no irritation. Haven’t cut myself in many years. My wife very much appreciates the difference.
Problem with multi-blade cartridge razors is you're more likely to get ingrown hairs based on how they work. They pull the whisker up from the follicle to cut it. Once it's released, the whisker goes back below the skin surface. This equals what feels like a nice close shave, but since the hair is now below the skin, it's more likely to get stuck below the skin as it grows, and cause the in-grown hair.
Franck Wagner That is the real point: quality; as Mr. Allison put it in his video: it gets to the level of an indulgence; and it is an indulgence with very good results, the very first one being feeling good with yourself for the extra care you took *in* yourself
Hell yeah Kirby I do this everyday and it's highly enjoyable. I use alot of products from Truefitt and Hill and the Holy Black. I will be purchasing brushes from the Hanger Project
Wonderful guide. Personally I found the Merkur Futur to be the perfect razor for me, with a Derby blade and Proraso soap. A family hand me down shaving mug, and for when I have that extra few minutes at the weekend, my grandfather's old straight edge razor. Occasionally, I'll switch in a Tobacco scented soap.
I loved watching this, great video. I find wet shaving to be one of the more enjoyable parts of my day along with my daily drink. I start with a hot shower to soften my beard before shaving and I prefer aggressive safety razors like the FaTip Piccolo. Adjustables are also good. My favorite soaps tend to be anything mentholated. Right now I'm using Proraso Green and Arko in my rotation. A glacial offering from Stirling every now and then.
Recently switched to wet shaving - brush, soap, DE razor, etc. - and getting the best shaves of my life. One thing I'd like to mention. When I occasionally nick myself, the vast majority of the time I simply don't feel it. I only realize it when a tiny spot of blood appears. I say this because the single thing that always put me off about shaving with a DE razor was the fear factor - fear of nicking and cutting myself and the pain associated with it. In hindsight I realize now how unnecessary and overblown that fear was. The nicks are tiny and painless. The only time I feel a tinge of "sting" is when I apply a styptic pencil or alum block to the nick, and even that is such a minor and fleeting thing. So, if you're viewing this video and stuck by a similar fear, I encourage you to get over it. Just watch a bunch of TH-cam videos (so many great ones) and take the plunge. Remember, no pressure, just let the weight of the razor itself do the cutting.
@@joestead346 I'm still DE shaving every day and getting awesome shaves. Here's another tip that I would give anyone new to DE shaving - buy yourself an adjustable razor. That way you can start on a mild setting and work your way up. I highly recommend the Rockwell 6S, but I recognize that it's pricey for a beginner. It's stainless steel and will last you a lifetime, but if you don't want to commit that much money they also sell a less expensive chrome zinc alloy model, the 6C. It's a good place to start. The Rockwell razors are highly regarded among DE razor users. They have interchangeable plates numbering 1 thru 6. I use plate number 3. Remember, DE shaving is about a super light touch and multiple passes at different angles - don't expect to get a good shave with one pass - think hair reduction with each pass - it's the accumulation of passes that will get you that great shave. Enjoy the process!
@@jerrys88 Thanks for this, I'll check it out. I was initially looking at the Merkur 37C, but after reading what you said, it's become apparent to me that the Rockwell sounds like a much better razor for beginners.
Lone Wolf that’s how I shave....it’s really not that much longer, he’s going slower as he talks & explains each procedure. But you can do this shave in less than 10 min.
I used a safety razor for a long time and badger brush, then I went back to a multi blade razor and it’s so bad for my skin. I will be going back to a safety razor. Also nice tip on the Adam’s apple.
Shaving is something that I definitely enjoy. After I got the right razor. My facial hair is like steel wool and most razors pull instead of cut or get dull 3/4 of the way. My goal is to find a barber here in town that does a wet straight razor shave. Sadly, the ones I called or have gone to use a freaking Bic or a cheap 5 bladed razor. I would like to find a barber that I could go to at least once a month or every other month to get a relaxing full shave experience.
I use Speick splash. It has enough alcohol to tighten pores and disinfect your freshly shaven skin but doesn’t burn like a sumbitch. It contains botanical extracts similar to witch hazel but even better for your skin. Doesn’t interfere with colognes. Absolute heaven for skin.
I understand the consideration to the audience in wearing a shirt and tie to shave but... I'd make a mess of the collar if doing the same so hats off to you sir for pulling it off. A really good demonstration of wet shaving. Picked up a few tips such as the holding the shaving cream container upside down when putting it on the brush. Thank you.
Kirby - I had no idea how luxurious the shaving experience could be until I watched your video and followed your advice. Thanks for taking the time to disseminate this information so elegantly. We are waiting for the "Shave Like Kirby" tee shirts to come out.
The most poser video I've ever seen. And those prices? You're ripping off your customers hardcore. First by misinforming them, and then by grossly overcharging for the equipment. Merkur, while excellent, ain't a Royce and it isn't steel either. It's chrome plated pot metal and it's price, fit, and finish would make it the Sonata or the Civic of the Safety Razor gang. If you were legit, you'd have a Charcoal Goods, Timeless, or Wolfman razor in something like all steel, titanium, or brass. You could have at least replated your Merkur in Rhodium like I did with my Futur in all you travels for something legitimately exotic. Hell, even the Game Changer from Razorock is more premium, and actually steel. 'German steel' means jack shit. The Game Changer is 316L, an actual specification. Please, don't let this guy fool you. It looks like he mined some info off of a single forum before making this video. Look at his prices compared to Italianbarber.com and maggardrazors.com He's got middle of the road Astra blades for $30 when really they're between 8 and 12 cents a piece You want legitimate advice by someone that isn't trying to not only sell to you, but rip you off at the same time, look Mantic59 and Michael Freedburg on YT. This guy has crappy technique and that compounded with all the inaccuracies made it so easy to spot his bull.
Just let me start out by saying what a truly fine video I have been "old school" wet shaving now for approximately 2 and a half maybe 3 years and I totally agree it's been a wonderful experience that every man who shaves should try I appreciate some of the techniques you highlighted in the video such as holding the shaving cream up when dabbing with a badger shaving brush and really enjoyed finding out how to shave around my Adam's apple I must try pulling back the skin on the neck area to get a nick-free shave. I notice that you are clean-shaven and therefore you highlight shaving multiple times to achieve that close shave feeling I, however, on the other hand, shave only once with my safety razor(I have started a collection of safety razors) in the past year I am now donning a beard one that I keep close crop to help frame the shape of my face so the areas of concern for me are my jawline and neck as well my mustache and goatee because I keep it sculpted shape and defined again thanks for the great video! P.S. I don't know too many gentlemen who could pull off shaving wearing a shirt and tie and dress robe you looked fantastic.
Man I love how you shave with the shirt and tie. I am a bald man and do my wet shave in shower. Head and face by feel. Touch up inirror if need be when out. Your prep and skill is impressive. Thank you You shave how my dad did. He only did it with a tank Tee on. Lol

These are things I've had to learn myself, and watching your videos helps greatly. Not only do you explain things well, you also exemplify why these things are important. Thanks for the life lessons

I never do a clean shave. I just trim my beard down
I love how slow these videos are. It's so much more relaxing to watch his content than these other channels like alpham and realmenrealstyle. I feel like Kirby Allison is a much nicer pace.
Only Kirby Allison could transform shaving into artistry. A new guilty pleasure.
The synthetic brushes are full of gluten. They made my cousins friend go into a frenzy.
@@teabaggervance8 Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements has a great selection of gluten-free synthetic brushes. Your cousin’s friend might want to look into that… 😂
I like knowing that a badger died to make me look good! It's the circle of life!
@@Sshooter444 badgers are horrible anyway, their extinction makes me smile.
Nice video, lots of good tips.
I can add a few to shorten the learning curve for anyone starting out, and I recommend wet shaving for everyone.
I have a heavy beard and moderately sensitive skin, so I have to be more careful than many people. Here are a few things that work for me :
- I try to shave after a shower. This softens the beard, moisturises the skin, and means you can skip the first step of wetting the beard, hot towels, etc.
- I rinse out the razor quite often, as the cut hair clogs to the razor and breaks contact between the blade and the skin.
- I prefer creams to hard soaps, i get just as good lather and it takes a lot less time than soaps to work the lather up
- I create the lather directly on my face, saves needing a bowl, and it works just as well, especially with a cream if you don't use soap.
He's not wasting water, he's sending it in a different direction.
@@Sshooter444 he's sending that water into my bowl of oat cereal
You mean conserving water while lux shaving can be accomplished without wasting 8 gallons of water? Geez.
I also shave in the shower. Its underrated.
You one hell of a smart fellow!
That’s what I keep telling myself.
Well if you’re smart and a real human, you shave in the shower lol. I ain’t got time for all that every day.. well I have the time but I’d rather be doing ANYTHING else than shaving
I completely agree. I switched to single blade and will never go back. Great tip about the neck area!

Good stuff, I converted to the safety razor- much more satisfying and very economical. "Because I'm worth it!"

OH SHIT HAHAHAHAHA YOU'RE RIGHT!
Probably time to change the blade.
Yeah. My start up cost was literally 3 dollars to get a few blades and the razor itself. I had to restore it a little but its damage was all aesthetic and cleanliness stuff. Well worth the money.
I've been shaving this way for about 15 years using the same Merkur I started with. I love every minute if it each morning.
I've just switched to a safety razor as woman and it honestly has been a lot easier than I thought it would be, a few tiny little Knicks on the knees and such but it's been so simple. I just have a lot of trouble taking the razor apart to change the blade
Seems like you need a man to come over and change that for you 😏
i came back to this video - because 2 years ago i stumbled upon it by accident (I am now a subscriber since) but after watching this video i dumped my Mach 3 cartridge razor i dumped the gels and foams i bought myself a Merkur 34c razor and a pack of 100 astra Green blades and a badger brush, got myself some TOBS soaps/creams and some proraso soaps and creams and some witch hazel and an Alum Block - i now absolutely love shaving and dont look upon it as the chore it used to be - Thanks Kirby
Great tutorial on a proper wet shave! I’m still learning, but it’s getting easier with each shave.
I like to use a scented alcohol aftershave then use an after shave lotion. I find it really helps prevents breakouts on my skin and moisturizes it so it’s not dry
Same here. That’s the best combination some really nice aftershaves out there and shave balm.
Kudos to you for shaving completely clothed (WITH TIE) and not spilling a drop. Every time I shave I have to shower from the mess I’ve made. 😂
Dear Mr.Allison
I would like you to make a video about good hair product and your hair styles.
I love shaving with a safety razor. Very relaxing. Kirby is the king!!!
I quit shaving years ago and bought a beard trimmer. I use it every couple weeks.
I also use said beard trimmer to shave my cat's ass when dingleberries start sticking to him.
Dying here!
🤣🤣
but does your cat wear a tie when he get the butthair cut?
Great suggestion! Thank you for sharing! You are absolutely correct!!
Hi Kirby, Great video, but the only issue I have is with using a sink for your brush and water to rinse your face. Not clean enought and likely bacteria-filled. Better to use a bowl or just running water right out of the faucet.
I started wetshaving 15 years ago. As Mr. Allison said it's now something I look forward to each morning.
Wazzu Cougars, I’ve been using the Feather titanium blades, but might switch to the Astra.
DeathInvestigator Feathers are great too. I use them often. Always good to find another blade that works for you. Lots of guys like the Astra Greens. A third of the price of Feather. But even popular blades don’t work for everybody. Try them before buying a full sleeve.
Wazzu Cougars, thanks!

Fantastic razor!
grande R41 is steel right?
@ I don’t think so but please double check. Also, Muhle Rocca is a fantastic stainless steel razor, albeit not as aggressive as R41 (which is good from my point of view).
@TheOriginalFSword you helped me bite thr bullet and Ive been contemplating buying the Rocca this week, however was worried it would be like the R41(nightmare for headshaving) even with a dovo blade
For the first time I see a guy dressed like that for shaving. A dirty razor contrasts very much with this gentleman's outfit.
Switched to DE & ASTRAS in 2014 after reading on shaving forums. While I've tried almost every other brand out there, Astra is hands down #1 for me.
I was waiting for the Saphir Renovateur at the end. (Or is it at the beginning??)
Whoa 6 yrs??
I thought i done well using same blade 20 times
He’s the definition of a proper gentleman!
So you shave after you have donned your shirt and tied your four-in-hand not? Would not a full-windsor be more appropriate with that collar?
not not..it's knot
I use a Merkur razor with feather blades and Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Cream. I made the switch from standard men's razors a little over a year ago and it's so much easier, faster, closer, and more pleasant. I will never go back. My goal is to learn how to use a straight razor without passing out from blood loss.
Guys, I think that shirt and tie is actually tattooed on his body
yeah i hear he's actually topless in this vid.
I love the Astra SP blades in my adjustable razors, but I go thru a comprehensive process of finding the best blade for each of my different razors.
my man Kirby i use gillette mach 5 and let me tell you never had a bloody face and forget about the wet towel lose the tie and shave in the shower !!!
@@WazzuCougrrs thank you ,i am going to make a effort to try because in the end its all about quality time with yourself ,merci !!!
Franck Wagner That is the real point: quality; as Mr. Allison put it in his video: it gets to the level of an indulgence; and it is an indulgence with very good results, the very first one being feeling good with yourself for the extra care you took *in* yourself

Thanks for this comment Jerry, I have had the same fear in regards to using a DE razor and may finally do it!

I use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol. Because alcohol dries your face out, and makes you look older...
;)
Haha, that’s bone with silian rail text
In the morning if my face is a little puffy, I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1,000 now.

Look at his prices compared to Italianbarber.com and maggardrazors.com
He's got middle of the road Astra blades for $30 when really they're between 8 and 12 cents a piece
You want legitimate advice by someone that isn't trying to not only sell to you, but rip you off at the same time, look Mantic59 and Michael Freedburg on YT. This guy has crappy technique and that compounded with all the inaccuracies made it so easy to spot his bull.
that paisley jacket is something else!
Thank you
You shave how my dad did. He only did it with a tank Tee on. Lol
