You shouldn't need to re watch after three years of doing it. It hardly contains anything useful, and after trying with a light bar a few times, you should just be able to do it.
Hi there, been having problems with grooving in a natural sumo form past several months. Glad i found your video, was extremely helpful, fixed the problems i was having with my setup. Everything just clicked when i just hipthrusted my hips as close to the bar before i pulled like you. Just wanted to say thanks, was a huge technique revelation.
Ok, I just went to gym today! Couldn’t wait to try it after watching this video last night. My sumo looked like wide stand stiff leg deadlift when my back was almost parallel with the ground. When I tried the common advice - chest up, I was just squatting the weight. When you mentioned this in video it caught my attention as I saw myself anytime when I tried to have nice angle of my back. Why?… from all those tutorials you can find on internet…. nobody talks about the tention in glutes and hamstrings the way you do??! It’s so obvious and makes so much sense! I did a video of me trying it and when I saw my form I was blown away! Smiling and happy! Now I really feel I can start building a strong sumo deadlift! I knew this video would help when I saw the rusty video quality with bad sound and an oldschooler explaining! Thank you!!!
i just made the transition over to sumo. My goal was to lose weight, So i figured why not learn a new lift? I can now Sumo DL about 240lbsx6 @ 161lbs. It feels a lot more natural for me and I am glad to switched over. Right now I am really trying to focus on the form and technique. i am trying to focus on NOT squatting down even though I always grab the bar before I get into position. I am still trying to figure how far i should stand from the bar, ankle of my foot and all that. Thanks for this video. +1 Subscriber.
Mario Simon you should be as close as possible at 145 pound body weight i deadlifted 315x5 and my legs were bleeding a lot after. This is how close you should be ;)
Very helpful vid! I'm currently making the to switch to sumo and my sumo pulls look like a haphazard wide stanced stiff leg deadlift lol. I was basically just pulling from the position you are at before you "snap" to your actual starting position, so I'm guessing that's what was causing my problems... Definitely gonna try this out. Thanks!
lol 0:42-47 I couldn't stop laughing... Knees out I'm gonna do it knees are way out.. Sadly when I first started doing sumo from conventional I read that cue and did that exactly. Good info Chris, definitely love the channel.
I pulled 735 @ 200LB's using this exact technique, it totally transformed the way i think about the deadlift both sumo and conventional, it feels like cheating especially on a deadlift bar.... instagram.com/p/BEjSQLNyr3e
Is there any way you can make a video on how to get ham and glute activation on the pull, I seem to be struggling with it and just muscling thru the lift because my back is strong.
So hips high and pushing your hips in jams you into the position at 1:51 ? Once this happens it looks like 20% of the lift is already done and it is almost like a block pull. I watched this video about ten times already trying to understand since I'm a dunce haha. But am I correct? I always thought breaking the floor was a slow process but Duffin makes it look like levitation magic of course this is only 315 and with like 585 on the bar it'd probably just bend.
The sumo deadlift for most people is slowest off the floor. But considering Chris can sumo pull 1000lbs, 315 isn't enough to stay on the ground while he gets in position. With 600 something, the bar would bend as he gets into his start position and then as he pulls, it would look like a traditional sumo (relatively slower at the bottom than the top of the lift).
wish i seen this a couple days ago. I started pulling sumo to ease up some tension on my back after I strained it a few months back. Sumos were feeling good so I decided to go heavy. I went for knees out and squated low before pulling. Since im new to sumo i wasnt sure how it should feel but y hips are fucking killing me. It hurts to walk, sit certain ways, clutching in my car, stretching helps but its incredibly painful. Wont be making that mistake again.....
I got used to pulling sumo and so far added 155 pounds to my deadlift since switching and have had no back pain at all. Learning the proper ques helps a lot
Just started implementing this cue and it really helps me get into a great position to pull. One question though, I'm currently training in the lower percentages and the bar / weight always comes off the floor when I put my hips in position. Normally this wouldn't be an issue however my lumbar is in flexion before I set my hips in position. So I essentially start with a rounded lumbar no load, proceed to put hips into position going from rounded lumbar to neutral spine which is when the bar leaves the floor, loading the lumbar. Am I implementing this cue wrong ? Should I be trying to sit the hips back further and lower with a neutral spine and attempt to pull them in this way ?
I have a problem when starting the pull, my butt goes away of the bar, and when it comes to a position like a conventional deadlift, the bar comes of the ground. that is because my back is a lot stronger than my legs? or is other thing? great video!
sorry for bad english. in the setup for the sumo deadlift I can put my hips really close to the bar, but when I start to pull, my hip tends to go back, and then the bar comes off the floor. I don't know if I am doing things wrong or is a inbalance between my legs and my back. Normally I pull conventional.
Nicolás Morgan weak glutes and hams very easily, stick to a weight where you CAN keep it right and then accumulate a lot of volume there until it's a habit then start moving up again.
Rehan Basson thanks for the reply, but I now figured the issue. it was a setup problem. instead of sitting down I was trying to bring the hips more close to the bar, and that is a inneficient position, at least for me.
Hey chris i was just wondering what if you're not lifting heavy enough to bend it to that degree? I'm only 145lbs and deadlifting about 310lbs for about 5reps, Also what if you use a bar that doesn't have alot of give like an eleiko bar how would I apply this technique?
Chris Duffin I'm looking to put this to practice!! I think I've been doing the execution completely wrong. I normally take my grip, turn knees out with hips still back and then drive with intention of standing up! think because of not trying to bring my hips into the bar (horizontally) this is why I struggle and battle to keep my knees open, sound about right?
Hey chris, im new to sumo pulling and if you get a chance to reply, your advice would be really appreciated. when i externally rotate my hips to drive my knees out I get a pretty painful pinching sensation at the front of my hips on both the left and right. Have you experienced this? Is this just the nature of the beast with sumo pulling? If you know a way to address the issue that would be great. Thanks and awesome lifts!
That is not usual. I would find someone that can asses what is going on and what needs worked on. Sorry, I won't do that over the internet... I only do assessments in person.
Hey Majori, I had a very similar issue and was told by my physio that it was because the head of femur had shifted forward in the socket and was now pinching my hip flexors when I had a high degree of hip flexion. The cause of the problem is likely overly tight hip flexors he said and the solution was to stretch them and to have another person perform a posterior hip glide, which basically corrects the position of the femur to eliminate the pinching. Hope that helps
So keeping you hips high is ok? You hear people say that you have to have your hips low in order to keep your upper body as vertical as possible or else it's very dangerous for your lower back.
Very logical explanation sir! I thank you for that and tried it today! I was able to pull 570×8. That's a huge PR for me and very little groin pain or hip pain.
Hey Chris, intermediate lifter here and working on my sumo deadlifts for quite awhile now. I'm not so sure about my form but whenever I ask people they tell me its correct but I feel theres something off about it. Been a fan of yours ever since I started Powerlifting 5 months ago and would be an absolute honor if you could check on my form in terms of a video Thank you :)
Holy crap this was a lightbulb moment for me
Eternal gratitude brother!
3 years on I still refer to this vid, it really helps me understand what I'm trying to do on my sumo pulls. Many thanks Chris.

@@jjwp-ql5rv coz everybody's the same as you? We forget overtime, it's only human. It's good to recap.
Trying to emulate the cues of the great one. Whiskey and deadlifts when I attempt my first 600 pound pull.

Sid Kudav not a problem my man.
Thanks so much! I'm trying to make the switch from conventional to sumo, this video was very helpful.
nice! really helped with my pulls
This is excellent info! Helped me a lot to understand where my sumo setup needs to be heading.
Thanks!
This right here....can’t wait to try this out on my next deadlift session. Thank you!
duffin does it again
Hey Chris, i've been trying this for quite some time now, you completely changed the way i deadlift, thank you !
You're the man, stay awesome and keep doing what you're doing!
I really wish I could visit your gym and learn more of these cues and biomechanics of each lift. You're a really intelligent dude.

Awesome explanation. I've been trying to dial my sumo pulls. Thanks!
Glad this helped. and nice meet.
thanks I appreciate it. your tips for sure helped me dial the pulls and set a PR
'Hips high, hips in' is my cue for sumo. Thankyou!
Awsome explanation.
😳😳😳 did I really just find the answer for my sumo pull? Can’t wait to try it!
thank god for this video
Very helpful vid!

good advice! I've recently switched from Conventional to sumo and find that there are some differences I need to work on.
Master of technique. Thanks.
The best videos are always the short low quality ones 😂
This is exactly how jamal browner pulls. He does it in one swift motion.
excellent video as always Chris!
Great video this explains alot of my issues. thanks Chris.
Chris is on some next level shit! This video blew my mind, and taught me a valuable lesson.
Great video, it took me a very long time to actually learn how to force my knees out.
lol 0:42-47 I couldn't stop laughing... Knees out I'm gonna do it knees are way out.. Sadly when I first started doing sumo from conventional I read that cue and did that exactly. Good info Chris, definitely love the channel.

Great, great video. Was able to apply this instantly. Thanks!

holy fuck i love that video
Are you natural?

So if I understand correctly (conventional is what I'm trying to do), hips as high, but as close to the bar as possible?

So whats the situation now, 11 months later?
Describe it
he's all kindz of snapped up action.. all kindz
I got used to pulling sumo and so far added 155 pounds to my deadlift since switching and have had no back pain at all. Learning the proper ques helps a lot
Awesome video bro
This is ground breaking information right here. Thanks chris I'll take sincere note of this
Great video, just wondering is this the case for equipped lifting? They often tell you to sit back into the suit to get more out of it?
saw the shirt, earned my subscription
make more of these, very informative

I'm still working out my own issues in the sumo, but i couldn't help to notice that nearly all of your toes are lifting off the ground on the pull.
I have a problem when starting the pull, my butt goes away of the bar, and when it comes to a position like a conventional deadlift, the bar comes of the ground. that is because my back is a lot stronger than my legs? or is other thing? great video!
having trouble understanding exactly what's happening from your comment.

you are heading the right direction.
Great advice, you have a new follower.
glad to hear!

Of course, I understand. Thankyou for the reply; knowing it is unusual is a big help in itself.

Serious question, do you shave your legs so there is less friction when your hands rub your inner thighs on the sumo pull?
skaz783 no.
So keeping you hips high is ok? You hear people say that you have to have your hips low in order to keep your upper body as vertical as possible or else it's very dangerous for your lower back.
+BetterCallSaul If you have long femurs its fine.
+BetterCallSaul you can slightly lean a bit over but make sure your shoulders doesn't go over the bar. Same with conventional
How would this apply to conventional ?
Can you get this same kind of "pop," on conventional ?
Very logical explanation sir! I thank you for that and tried it today! I was able to pull 570×8. That's a huge PR for me and very little groin pain or hip pain.
Nice pull BTW!
What was the next video?
I'm a bit late to the party, but awesome vid - cheers mate!

PROTECT CHRIS DUFFIN at all COST
Holy shit..
I guess you completely changed the way i deadlift, THANK YOU! My PR turned into light weight ;p
I wear that shirt to the gym too! :D
haha
Is this basically same thing as sitting back and pulling slack out the bar for conventional... I don't do sumo... So don't crucify me
