      I've seen other sim racers do a more general style of review so I wanted to make sure my 'take' was that of someone who's making an upgrade like this for the first time. There will be plenty of people out there on Logitech wheels suddenly scratching their heads and wondering if this is worth it...so wanted to do my bit to help out 😉

      @@DDFRacer Yeah I am curious due to the fact that I am using a 1.2 CSL myself. I have always ran it at a bit higher strength than base so it would be great

      Yes, exactly. I have a Logitech G923 and never had a direct drive wheel. I've watched other reviews for the Gran Turismo DD Pro wheel, but this review made me actually want to buy it.

    Some iRacing tips:
    1. Make sure “linear mode” is checked in the options menu
    2. Press F9 when in the car, do a lap or so after which an “auto” button should pop up. Click on “auto” and it will set the correct ffb strength for the car / track. It’s usually different for every car / track combo and even changes with the amount of caster in the setup. The auto button let’s you use all 8nm optimally at every track.

    Great to see you finally try out a DD. It's cool to see the excitement when noticing the differences from the Logitech. You're right though you have a lot of setup ahead of you! And this is the most plug and play DD there is 😂.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The prospect of a DD wheel has always been quite daunting to me, especially considering the amount of tweaking and fiddling that's usually required to get it up and running. I'm all for plug and play, just firing up the sim and going driving, which is what the G29 was extremely good at...however I think the next few weeks will include a lot of testing and playing around with settings 😉

    its kind of amazing what you get used to, ive been using a simucube 2 pro now for 6 months or so, a DD1 before that and the novelty kind of wears off after a while, you know its giving you detail you don't get on lower end hardware but it kind of just melts away to insignificance... that is until you go back to the low end hardware for a reminder, every now and then ill give my 6 year olds thrustmaster t150 a whip and its a nice reminder how amazing the simucube is and i suddenly fall in love with it again.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly why I'm going to keep the Logitech G29 on standby 😉 it's always nice to have some perspective and the option to switch back in the future if I need to. Apart from being a good back up plan in case of (hopefully not!) issues with the CSL DD, it'll also be handy for making more tutorials and FFB guides.

      You basically described just about everything that kept us awake at night while being on our minds 24/7. We want this or that thinking how wonderful it’ll be when we get it. That includes cars. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it disappoints. After a while, though, it just becomes part of your life and it’s no big deal any longer. Then another shiny thing comes along and the cycle starts again.

    I just upgraded this weekend to GT3V2 DD and CSL Pedals, from my existing Logitech G27 setup. I sent about 8 hours driving about adjusting settings and retesting, and I can't tell much difference between the two when it comes to FFB. Everything is updated and dailed in to what the settings should be according to different message boards. Although I did some mods to the G27 to remove the slop and get everything dialed in many years ago, I also made a few mods to the G27s pedals and shifter at the same time, but I wasn't expecting them to be on par with the Fanatec. You made it sound like it was going to be a huge difference in smothness and accuracy but I can't see that, I would say only upgrade when your existing kit breaks if you are happy with your current kit.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Very valid points, however I believe that not many people would be in your position having 'boosted' Logitech gear so to speak. They'd be coming from the stock standard experience, like myself a few years ago, which would be a bigger jump subjectively whereas it sounds like you've bridged that gap between the two.
      It also depends on what version of the DD you are using. I see you mentioned GT3V2 but that refers to the wheel, not the wheelbase, so I'm unsure whether you have the 5 or 8Nm version of the DD? For reference, the stock Logitech G27 puts out 2.3Nm so, either way, the Fanatec DD is stronger and _should_ also feel much smoother due to the FFB coming directly from the motor shaft instead of the gears and cogs of the Logitech. If you're feeling any distinct notches then that's a sign something's not right with your gear.
      With regards to the pedals, you've mentioned you're using the CSL Pedals which are not actually the same as what I'm using in this video (Clubsport V3 pedals). You don't have a load cell brake pedal which is one of the big advantages of the Clubsports compared to the CSL or the Logitech pedals, that honestly does make a big difference.
      Not saying that you're wrong when you're describing your experience, not at all mate, but I'm not sure if we're comparing like for like here 👍 either way I'm sorry that this isn't the big improvement you were hoping for.

      The V3 pedals were a nice upgrade last year and really helped with my car control and consistency, but the CSL DD is more of an immersion booster and stability control than a laptime improver 👍 it adds so much feeling into the driving and really brings alive that excitement about sim racing again. I did a 90 minute F1 race at Spa in RaceRoom last night and every time I approached Pouhon I was grinning my face off underneath the VR headset.

      It's like I'm experiencing sim racing for the first time all over again, so amazing! That FR X-17 race at Spa blew my mind, I was actually getting giddy every time I approached Pouhon corner as I knew the aero was going to ramp up and it'd be a case of bracing the shoulders, leaning into the feedback and holding on for survival over the bumps, such an awesome feeling. The CSL DD is giving me a whole new appreciation for driving that I never would have experienced on the Logitech G29 unfortunately.

  • @WuschelWolf

    I think to this date this is your best and most fleshed out video so far. What a lovely journey to experience this new and exciting hardware with you. The enthusiasm in the intro alone, it's just like a child unpacking a Nintendo 64 for christmas. Thank you for this great first and second look on the CSL DD. All the b-roll material, the cuts, the memes and in general the high production value made this video seem shorter than it was because the time flew by watching it. I do have to admit that I'm quite envious now and I'll see if I can do the upgrade as well sometime. They will be probably sold out for a while but we'll see. My G27 has served me well over the past 8 years or so but it's time for something more advanced. And when that happens I know where to look for a referral link, hehe. ;)
    Also now you can officially say that you are sick of RaceRoom. I hope it wasn't anything serious. :D
    (Also sorry that it took me nearly two weeks to write this comment. D:)

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was worried the length of the video might put a few people off and become quite boring over time, so needed to make sure the editing was snappy and kept people's attention 😉 and a little meme here or there along the way is a good way to break things up too, as long as it's not too childish.
      About the wheel itself, yeah, the CSL DD is just...wow. I can't believe it's only been two weeks since this video went out, feels like so much longer and that I've done so much more driving than I actually have. I need to remember I'm still getting used to it 😅 but the feeling of the Logitech is still fresh in my mind and serves as a great comparison. If you get the opportunity to make this upgrade then I would thoroughly recommend it as it's breathed a whole new life into sim racing for me. Not that it was previously becoming stale, of course, but now it's like I'm experiencing everything for the first time all over again. I have a genuine sense of fear when approaching certain corners now as I know I'm going to have to grip up and hold on tight to actually make it through in one piece. Driving is _physically_ rewarding which is something I never got on the G29.
      PS. Still not sure what the sudden nausea was with the RaceRoom by the way. Definitely nothing to do with eating a full kebab and chips snack pack to myself and then physically exerting myself in an uncomfortable awkward seating position. Nothing to do with that at all...

Been thinking about it and since it weights only 10# it's a direct replacement (weight wise) for my old CSL elite belt drive wheelbase. The Big boy DD's weigh in at 20# which is not what I'm after in the motion simulator, I'm trying to keep it light but super strong.. Redesgned my old motion rig into this new one just to give extra support for a DD wheelbase. Kind of like the way the four tyres on the car are the only contact patch with the road, that's where all the information is transferred. When you suddenly swap out one device in your hands for a new and improved, much more powerful, much more detailed device then...yeah, it's like you're experiencing sim racing for the first time all over again 😁 and who wouldn't be grinning their face off if they had that feeling again?

    DDF got a DD. Finally. Very informative review, incredible how your telling makes me believe on what to expect from something that advanced in technology.
    Though it will never be worth for me, way too expensive for what I'd use it for and for the limited amount of time I'll ever use it, I'm still excited to see your progress and step up from the Logitech troubles.
    And that makes me realize how much I'm missing out on the FFB range. The FFB update in Raceroom might've made a huge difference for the DD users out there whilst I was just fiddling around with my plastic gears and adapting to a different feel.
    The knowledge and variety of titles you've covered in this video is a great guide for people to see if it's worth the money when they're just playing TOCA2 most times. And I'm looking forward to your updated review of the rF2 FFB :D
    The amount of passion, time and hard work put into this video can't be numbered. It's always a great enjoyment watching professional content on my favourite topic of the gaming industry. Feels like watching a short film.
    Oh my, this is already your third most watched video?! Incredible how YT works

      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I didn't have the channel to go with my sim racing then I probably wouldn't have purchased a CSL DD either. I used to take really long breaks between my races in the past, not because I wanted to, but because I never got around to it. Having you guys watching holds me accountable in a weird sort of way 😉 but one that I really enjoy. That said, it's hard not to be able to suggest this wheel base to someone who wants to step up from entry level since it's so affordable, although adding a wheel rim and stand into the mix make it slightly less cost effective...
      As for the video edit itself, yup a fair bit of work went into this one and for good reason. I know it would be quite a popular topic and it's currently bucking the trends for all my analytics in that it's getting _more_ popular the longer time goes on. Normally my videos plateau after a few days or maybe a week at most, but this one has an upward curve which is really nice to see but not entirely unexpected considering plenty of people are getting their hands on their very own CSL DD wheels right now.

    On rfactor 2 you need to turn down or off the sound effect volume to get rid of the sound problem. You are correct that it is not car or track issue. The huge rattling sound coming from the DD was normal - you were probably on the gravel or you may have hit the barrier and the DD was just transferring that vibration to the steering wheel.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I've got the sound issue sorted now 👍 even though I turned the number of effects up from 1 to 64, a few people have pointed out that it doesn't take effect until I restart rF2.
      The huge vibration was not normal though, and that worries me a lot. It sounded very metallic and wasn't just the motor moving back and forth, it sounded completely overloaded and shook the entire rig. Man, it was *loud*. I didn't hit anything or drive off track, I just pulled the car to a stop in the pitlane in a straight line on tarmac and the vibration happened when I was slowing down between around 10kph to 0. No other sim I tried did this at any point 🤔 not even close...driving offroad or hitting the barriers in RaceRoom, iRacing, DIRT Rally 2.0, ACC or AC (and trust me, my driving was pretty terrible that day, I was doing my fair share of vibration inducing incidents 😂)

    G29 basically forces you to learn via trial and error which is frustrating , whereas to me it seems DD shows you what the car is doing, so you dont have to guess if you will spin or not, you just know. Finally going from a G29 to the MOZA R9 base cannot wait to feel the details i've been missing and the silence free of g29 rattles.

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The basic forces needed to control the car and react to grip loss can be felt through the G29, but the CSL DD definitely gives you a much better picture, particularly on the lower end of the scale when the forces are relatively small. You make a great point about the rattles though, that's one of the big advantages of moving away from Logitech gear...although now the entire rig shakes instead of just the gears in the wheel 😅

  • @davidbennett4286

    Might not be possible on your rig/monitor mount setup but with the large distance between the wheelbase and the back of the wheel you can drop the monitor between them just above the shaft - and therefore have the wheelbase further away from you. If it's not possible to get the screen close enough to you, you might be able to jury-rig a monitor/TV extension arm to your rig so you can pull it in to position.

    • @DDFRacer

    Hey Dan another great vid, I went from a G923 to a CSL DD with the V3 pedals a couple of weeks ago now. Once you adjust your seating you'll settle in those aches will go. Couple of things i'd like to here your thoughts on....
    1) Straight away i plugged my pedals directly into the wheel base and with the brake force slider in the Fanatec setup software it changes the way the brake pedal feels being plugged directly into the computer USB - just in case you decide to go down this route
    2) Does it make your lap times slower? I only have Raceroom but felt coming from Logitech to CSL DD with its FF strength at 100% was too much and found the effort to turn the wheel was slowing my input/reaction - which in truth does not matter as the actual driving is now so much more enjoyable
    Lots of learning and so much new information to process has made Raceroom a whole new game

    • @DDFRacer
      @DDFRacer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can confirm the seating position is all fixed now 👍 managed to drop the wheelbase down a notch so it fits underneath the monitor and sits further back. Much much better! To answer your questions:
      1) I might try this in the future but I have access to the same Fanatec software brake force sliders that you do, it just needs to be accessed through the Game Controllers menu in Windows instead of directly through the Fanatec software. I have them manually calibrated to the forces that I apply, works like a charm.
      2) Funnily enough, I haven't actually done a proper before/after comparison yet. Sure I tried the GT4 Porsche at Bilster Berg in RaceRoom that we used for Tuesday Thunder a few weeks ago, but I wasn't pushing anywhere near the limit. I might try that at some point in the next week or two so I can see how my times compare. I don't _feel_ like I'm as fast yet, but my pace in the F1 Spa race says otherwise I guess 😬

      When you purchase the the Boost Kit they actually remove the standard power supply from your order, so you can only have one. It's a bit odd, because then you can't swap between them, and if you want to get both the 5Nm and the 8Nm you have to purchase the Boost Kit _in addition_ to the standard package and that's another couple of hundred dollars right there.

      In my opinion the 8Nm is a good strength. It's definitely enough force but nothing too crazy that'll rip your arms off, although longer races might get a bit tiring if there's a lot of high load corners. Better to get the Boost Kit because then you can turn it down if it's too much...although if you get the standard power supply and it's not enough then you can't turn it up to get more 😉

Regarding irFFB, I still need to do some more testing as I really haven't spent too much time in iRacing lately but from my limited experience that plugin is no longer required. The increased strength of the CSL DD gives you a bigger range of force to play with which means you can feel the smaller details much more easily and get that 'Seat of the pants' feeling without the need for artificial boosters. Those details would get lost on my old G29 but, like I said, my running is rather limited so need to do more testing.
