I have one of the PX4CC's from Langdon and, if you want to get even weirder, they mounted a Trijicon SRO to mine. I cannot say enough good things about this gun. It's stupid accurate for a compact pistol, the trigger is astonishing, the recoil impulse is exceptionally mild for a plastic gun, and it's been completely reliable over the couple thousand rounds I've put through it. All the drawbacks of going outside of the Glock mainstream apply, of course, but if you're looking to spend extra for a really high quality carry gun and don't want something single action, this is it. This has something that I didn't experience in some of the nicer DA/SA Sigs, HK's, or CZ's I've spent time with.

    • @tobylmiller
      @tobylmiller 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

^^^ YES! :) Ernest Langdon says that the PX4 Compact is the compact that shoots like a full-size, and he wasn't kidding. I think James touched on it during his review (at least from a size perspective). It does 'feel' bigger than it is - almost a "Doctor Who" quality about it. Virtually the same footprint as the G19, but it feels - and shoots - bigger... like a full-size pistol.
Regarding the trigger... I absolutely love the trigger on my Inox Compact, but LTT's trigger work is, as John Correia (Active Self Protection) described it, "space magic".

The thumb on the hammer is for when the gun is going in the holster, not coming out. That way if theres any dangly shit in there, it cant pull the trigger (you have more mechanical advantage on the hammer than anything pressing the trigger). If you watch DA/SA guys, the thumb is always on the back when stowing the gun, and it makes a world of difference in comfort for AIWB.

Also I’ve found over my years that when you get a “panic buy ammo batch” from manufacturers cranking it out; primers aren’t always consistent and often harder than they need to be, thusly hammer fired hits the primers harder than a striker.
I’ve found this to be true after a few batches of hard primers as a reloader that will fire with certain firearms and not others. Even Sig Pseries hammers don’t hit as hard as beretta HK etc, I’ve found out.

That's one reason I hesitate about the FN Reflex. It has a very light trigger pull because is is single action only internal hammer fired gun. There is no external hammer to hold down like on my Langdon Tactical 92 Compact.
Same on Glocks and the like. There is nothing more useless in my opinion than a trigger safety when your trigger catches on something when holstering it.
I like the security of being able to hold down the hammer when holstering.

PX4 compact was my first carry gun. 9 years later I still have it and it's still one of my two carry guns. It is a little husky compared to the subcompacts that have come out the last two years, but it's accurate and reliable. If you're wondering whether the rotating barrel is a gimmick, I can tell you in 9mm you can feel the difference, having fired it side by side with a dozen other guns of roughly the same size.

I've heard Ernest Langdon address the "grip issue", and he had an excellent point. From Beretta's perspective, it would involve a significant investment and re-tooling to churn those 'Gen 2' frames out to a market place that's already incredibly finicky ("too much... , not enough", etc.), so you'd still have customers searching for an aftermarket solution. With a $17 solution (Talon grips) that works for the overwhelming majority of PX4 owners, there is NO - ZERO - incentive for them to change a thing in that area.

I got a PX4 storm compact for my first carry gun. It definitely helped me get used to carrying a gun with a round in the chamber. First I would carry it without a round in the chamber but with the hammer cocked back. After two weeks of carrying it like that and never finding the hammer forward my brain got the idea that it was not going to go off accidentally and I was able to start carrying in with a round in the chamber confidently. The other part that helped a lot was being able to hold the hammer with my thumb when holstering it, it felt better to me to know I wasn't going to accidentally hook the trigger, and even if I did I was actively stopping the gun from firing with my thumb. I now carry a P365XL but every time I take my PX4 to the range I always think the same thing, "Why did I stop carrying this?"

Why would you carry with the hammer cocked back when you can just drop the hammer and leave the safety off, utalize the double action. I mean cocked and locked is cool too but this gun has a safety where the "up" position is "safety off" which is weird and doesn't really make sense for a natural drawstroke like a safety that fires I'd the "down" position

The grips are nothing like the 92. They are a fat handful of gripping power. Mine came with changeable back straps (as all do) to fit your particular hand size. The one thing I did....& I think Langdon does this on the Compact Carry as well...is put a set of Talon Grips on it because they tend to be slippery from the factory if you sweat or get blood on your hands. It improved the grip a thousand fold.
Don’t hesitate to get one. The one I sold is still there cause everybody thinks they are ugly. Just gives me more time to get the scratch to buy it back...at cost, of course. 😉

The Px4 compact is an outstanding, world-class firearm and an excellent value. I purchased the standard model in .40 S&W on sale for $339.00, and subsequently added most of the upgrades found on the Landon version - which I was fortunate to find on sale. I spent another $130.00 on the upgrades. This is a very safe firearm to carry and or keep in the home. It conceals well. And just for clarification, the use of the safety on this gun is strictly optional. You DO NOT need to disengage the external safety prior to firing your shot - unless you have chosen to utilize the external safety. I happen to value the availability of the safety as an option, but I do not keep the gun with safety engaged on a day-to-day basis. I highly recommend this firearm to those seeking a compact semi-auto for self protection and recreational target shooting. Easily the best handgun I've ever owned.

Do you think it would be a good first pistol if a new handgun shooter could only shoot 40 s&w or 45 acp?

    • @phishno2767
      @phishno2767 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@deaglan6641 Probably a little late to be a useful reply for your question, but yes a Px4 is entirely manageable for a new shooter. I absolutely would recommend a traditional DA/SA like this to a new shooter over a striker-fired gun (e.g. Glock, SIG P320, M&P, etc) for a reason that doesn't get much air time: You can practice dry-firing using snap caps and you can develop your trigger control skills without burning through expensive ammo and range trips (just don't have live ammo anywhere around when you are working with snap caps and keep that muzzle pointed in a safe direction). Once you learn to master a relatively long, heavy double-action pull, it's a simple transition to shooting anything else well.
Between the two calibers (I have Px4s in .40 and .45) I recommend the .40 over the .45 for the following reasons:
      1) Ammo cost
      2) Slightly softer felt recoil
      3) Magazine capacity is significantly greater (14 vs 9 in standard magazines)
      4) If you don't have large hands, the .45 frame is very slightly wider and longer, so slight that it is hard to measure but it is definitely something you can feel when handling them one after the other
As with any autoloader, you need to ingrain its manual of arms so you don't have to think too much about it. I nearly got my foot blown off by an experienced shooter who got things out of sequence when unloading his gun at the range. This is something that is worth practicing for several hours over a few days before you head to the range so it become second nature. DON'T be learning how to safely handle your gun with a round in the chamber and the hammer back...

@@phishno2767 thanks for the reply. I was asking long before I could even get a handgun so your response is still relevant. Ive decided getting someone else because of my situation and small waist the px4 is quite big for me. I'll likely get the cz p10s or if I can find one for cheap, the ronin emp 1911. I find the controls on the 1911 very intuitive but there arent really any good carry 1911s for the size I need that isnt the ronin sadly. If I need something hotter then 9mm I can shoot +p. I carried striker fired guns up until about 3 years ago, then switched [started AIWB] to the Hk45c or a usp9c and I shoot them better than my Glock 19. But hey that’s me, to each their own.

EXCELLENT REVIEW!!! My EDC is the PX4 Inox Compact, and I absolutely love it! You were correct in your estimation that the Compact Carry (CC) is very much worth the extra $$ - IF you want all the upgrades - and there's no one better than Langdon to facilitate that. I picked mine up before the LTT CC came out, and I can tell you, I would have jumped at the opportunity to get all those upgrades upfront (You do know Langdon can also set you up for a red dot on the PX4 as well, right?), rather than having to do them myself. HOWEVER, that is another FANTASTIC 'feature' of the PX4... just about any home-gunsmith can work on it. Yes, it's that easy! To-date, I've upgraded to the Stealth kit ($70) shown on the LTT CC you reviewed, slapped on some rubberized Talon Grips ($17), and swapped to LTT's 11# chrome-silicon hammer spring ($12)... that's it, and I'm incredibly happy with it. The hammer spring swap is, without a doubt, the most 'bang for the buck' upgrade you can make.
All that, to say this: You can still get a base PX4, make some very cheap/basic mods yourself, and still be incredibly happy with it... just a phenomenal, and extremely underrated pistol. Oh, and as a BONUS, you can modify Beretta's extended 20 round mag extension kit (intended for the full-size) to fit compact mags for an 18 round backup - that's pretty sweet :)

  • @AlossFS
    @AlossFS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Couple of little corrections- the trigger group used is the Beretta Competition trigger group not an ltt part. You can buy it for your existing px4.
Langdon did eventually break the cam block firing the gun, but it didn't stop working even with the broken part.
The stock DA spring is, IIRC an 18lb spring. Many people get the 16lb D spring as an upgrade but Langdon said that it is a smaller interior diameter and causes friction and increases spring weight.
Langdon recommends the 12lb spring if you don't want the potential for light strikes, but a 10lb can be used for competition with good ammo.
Very worth mentioning that you can upgrade an existing px4 to be just like the ltt without any real gunsmithing involved. Caveat on that I'm now into my px4 about $1100 now. Ouch.
The slide bevelling makes it very comfy to carry iwb too surprisingly.

I agree. In my opinion, I love the PX4 more than the more popular Beretta 92 series. The PX4 is one of the most flat shooting pistol I've ever shot without much muzzle flip. There are more flat shooting guns like the CZ 75 series, but I love that you have larger slide to grab onto while still being relatively flat shooting. The trigger is great with a short reset. It also has that 80s sci fi look that I love. The only things I dislike about the PX4 Storm are the large decocker/safety and the lack of grip texture on the side of the PX4's grip. The LTT version of the PX4 Compact solves these issues out of the box. It's still easy to replace the PX4's safety/decocker with the 92's (might as well change it to a decocker only while you're at it) and add talon grips if you already have an existing model, but the price of the LTT PX4 Compact is actually a pretty good deal if you were already plan on doing all the aftermarket changes yourself. I'm still hoping Beretta releases a steel frame version of the PX4 Storm in the future. Maybe a PX4 StormX in a similar manner to the 92x would be ideal.

I carried a 92D for many years as my EDC. After a while it got pretty loose as I bought it used from a cop back in the day and it had lord knows how many rounds through it when I retired it. Never had a jam. I then carried a Ruger LPC .38 for a while but relegated it to my bedside go to home defense backup. I have carried the PX4 Storm Sub now for 8 years as my trusted EDC.
I would not trade for it for anything. It has never jammed, tight groups, 13+1 and now my muscle memory feels odd with anything else. I will say that it took a long time to get used to the feel and to find a grip method that kept me on target. Once I did, with the aid of an instructor, I never looked back. The issue was the bulky width of it and of course the short barrel. It just didn't want to stay on center but that was me and not the PX4.
I am 5' 11" / 190 and it can be a bit bulky at 3 o'clock IWB. I've become accustomed to it now and forget I have it even after a long day but that also took time. One thing is that it does take a LOT of practice and patience to get into the flow with it and I can see why some just find that too much of a deviation from what they are used to.
To each their own and we should carry what we are comfortable with and what has been proven to meet our needs. Never did know why all the fuss about the PX4 but then again I do understand it isn't for everyone...I love mine.

That's pretty incredible ...the .45's not easy on frames :) There are only two .45's I'm even interested in owning: a 1911 and the PX4 .45 or, preferably, the PX4 SD .45. Outstanding review! Everything you said is 100% accurate and on target!. Very entertaining and the best assessment of the LTT PX4 Compact I've seen. The LTT version of the PX4 and 92s is the only way to go. I sent my PX4 Storm Full size to LTT for a trigger job, and when it was returned, I had a high-end firearm with one of the best triggers on the planet. I was stunned at how big of a difference the LTT trigger made over a stock trigger. My groupings at 10 yards were touching, and the first double-action and single-action shots were within an inch of each other. After a few months of getting reacquainted with my PX4 with the LTT Trigger, I ordered an LTT92. The LTT92 is one of the best firearms available and runs circles around lesser guns. Keeping the faith, I ordered a PX4 compact with Holosun RDO, and I can routinely punch a 4'inch grouping at 60 feet. The LTT versions turned me into a Beretta Fan Boy. Fellow shooters at range cannot believe how smooth the LTT triggers are. Sure they are pricey, but the triggers saved me hundreds of rounds in practice.

I bought my px4 for $439+LTT transfer bar $70+LTT hammer spring $12=$521 as for the polishing LTT does you can pretty much achieve the same results by running 500 rounds through it. Px4 is an amazing gun.

I have 2 PX 4 Storms. Ones mine and the other is my daughters. We took our CCP class together using these guns. I scored best of course but my daughter is not a training type of person and scored second. I know all you 2A Family will say that there's either pass or fail but I gave a tip to the range instructor to score the hits. Now I know it's real. This is my second favorite pistol. First being my EAA Witness that's also a 9mm. PLEASE keep this in mind. If you don't share the same mags at least share the same caliber. it's a lot easier to stock up on one caliber rather than 45, 380, 38, 357, 10 mm, the list goes on and on and on. Keep your ammo in the family!.

Knowing just how hard it is for any pistol designed for carry that isn't Glock or S&W to gain serious consideration has to be something pretty special. What that means for us is that it really is a pistol worth looking at ... thanks for the honest and fair review of the Storm Compact. Cheers

I’ve carried a px4 9mm only for the last 2 years. My absolute favorite gun I’ve ever fired and carried.

James, thanks for the review. Beretta PX4 Storm, I would get the full size, have the 17 round magazine, as that is the last service pistol and size I have. Yes, one of the few people that prefer an external hammer on a handgun. And yes, it might be heavier than a Glock, but my previous model to this, makes it feel like an upgrade and so much lighter and a grip that actually fits my hand better than the Mod 92FS which was all steel.
Okay, not a Beretta fangirl, but definitely more of an all steel handgun fangirl. Not just because I grew up and was taught on all steel pistols and revolvers.
The trust issue isn't a factor, as the police here carries Beretta mostly, other law enforcement agencies carries Glock. There are Walther P99's utilized too.
Like most shooters, we automatically gravitate towards the mechanics we are most used too.

I purchased a PX4 Storm Compact Carry directly from LTT three years ago and it has been excellent in all respects. The one I purchased was the next model up from the one reviewed and had an NP3 finished barrel, internals and the three magazines were NP3'd as well. I have well over 1000 rounds through it without a single stoppage or malfunction. My best friend, who I shoot with regularly, purchased the same model shortly after I did has had the same experience. Yes, it was expensive, but is a semi-custom pistol. The trigger action really needs to be tried to understand how good it is. I never would have believed a DA/SA trigger could be that good. Langdon is a wizard when it comes to triggers.

James, the thumb on the hammer thing is done when holstering the gun, not when drawing. The idea is that if there's a shirt tail or other obstruction catching the trigger, you'll feel the hammer move and stop before the gun fires. I just apply the safety when holstering, and remove it when the gun is in place.
I carry a gun that's similar to the PX4, a Ruger P95. Polymer frame DA/SA double stack. It weighs the same and is slightly larger. Holds 17+1 with Mec-Gar magazines. Mine has a smooth nine pound DA and a very crisp four pound single action trigger pull. It's been 100% reliable through about a thousand rounds.
Paid just over $200 for it, though it did not come with a magazine. Got five Mec-Gar magazines for $100. Of course, it's not Sniper Gray.

Very fair review James of the PX4 CC. I carried a G22 or G23 for duty for many years. While not quite the “fan boy” as you- I’ve got nothing bad to say about Blocks, I mean Glocks- except their standard appearance. My PX4 CC is a more handsome firearm. That said, retraining myself from striker fire to DA/SA has been the hardest part for me. I still own a Glock but, my CCW is the PX4 CC.

Hey James. Love your a... vids, but since I live in the Netherlands with its restrictions I couldn't help but noticing a couple of knives you showed in this vid, a ZT and what I believe is a Benchmade?
Be interested to know what your EDC (pocket)knife is.
Love ya man, keep up the good work, humor, and you know what.
    Yours truly

I really appreciate how you don't down play or make fun of safety concerns. My biggest fear while I was in Iraq was not getting killed but that I might accidentally shoot one of my fellow soldiers, AD style. I would hate to have gone almost a year in country, with no mishaps, only to turn around and have an AD let alone accidental shoot myself or someone else.

I've been shooting the PX4 FS in 9mm since 2008. Tens of thousands of rounds through my Type F [D/S action with manual safety, FYI]. No jamming failures. No parts failures. Dead on balls accurate. Really like the hammer-fired over the striker-fired style. Love the rotating barrel as I'm far from the largest bull in the barn and it mitigates the recoil. Substantially. I've been carrying for two years and it is a low-profile, comfortable and practical weapon in FBI Strong-Side position. And mine is as-is from Beretta.
