A good friend worked for a US intelligence organization and carried a Walther PP (32 cal) during his career. I met him earlier in our service. He stayed, I did not. Visiting later after retirement, I commented about the PP on his night table ; he said he carried it while traveling for the agency. Other than that, he wouldn't comment; I wouldn't have expected him to say more, would have been shocked if he had. You're 41, I'm 81. I first carried a .45 cal as a platoon leader in Vietnam. Over the years I've sold my very accurate .45's switched to Beretta 9mm's, more recently the Baretta .380 and really like the look of the new Beretta Tom Cat .32 cal. Feels like a good sized pocket self defense pistol for me. I'll buy one when available. I still regularly shoot, but my good range-day partners have been dying off.
Yo brother . Whereas I wasn't a Platoon Leader in RVN . I was a medic who carried one in RVN . No Alphabet Org .But did do 32 yrs combined military and DOD time . I have had a few 45's since I came home. My first purchase was a M1 carbine , in that I carried one sometimes I.C. I plan to buy one of these also . Stay strong brother ! lol. I honestly, very strongly recommend the original over the 30x. Newer doesn't always mean better. If I was to purchase one today, I would buy a 3032 without any hesitation at all. I would even prefer a used older one with the thinner slide over the newer thick slide versions of the 3032.
@@deucedeuce1572 Yeah, I agree. My 3032 just feels really good in my hand. It's thin on top, but has kind of a fat ass (grip) that just fills your hand nicely. Ergonomic differences aside from the 30X, the frame cracking thing is a little worrisome, but it's not like I'm trying to do a Turkish shotgun burndown with it.
@@g54b95 Yeah, as far as I know, the frame will never crack if you shoot the 71gr ammo in it or lighter. It only ever happens if you shoot the heavier ammo and the thick slides that they put on them never fixed the problem, so I think it's weird that they still continue to produce them like that. It makes no sense to make a gun so much fatter and heavier for no reason at all. They had a couple slides crack, but it wasn't even remotely a common enough problem to worry about. A few Glock slides have cracked too. I've seen about a dozen Glock slides with caved out breech faces for example... but Glock don't go turning their guns into Hi Points over it.
Same thing happened with my Mrs... We actually ended up sending the old version back because it kept malfunctioning. Beretta was really good about it though and gave us the option to replace with either the APX, the 80X, or the new version when it is officially released.
I agree on the criticism about not shipping with a flat magazine. Weird omission considering the philosophy of the gun. While the wood grips are beautiful, I agree that they contradict the gun’s designed purpose (compact carry) given how thick they are. Let’s hope they offer beautiful slim grips as an add-on option.
I'm glad to see 32 ACP receiving some love. I sometimes travel for work and my teenage daughter, who is alone, has a Beretta Model 81 that she is far more effective with than a similarly sized 9mm or 380. The . 32 allows her to carry a helluva lot more firepower than a .22 caliber. It's basically the same recoil as a .22 caliber but twice the energy. Plus, she can shoot the eye of a bird flyin with that Beretta model 81. She can't hit squat with a 9mm
Yeah, the 32acp is an excellent round. I wish it was more popular and less expensive... just like the .25acp. There are so many excellent pocket guns chambered in .25acp... but it's no more powerful than .22lr and if it's any more reliable than modern .22lr self defense rounds (Like CCI and Federal Punch) it's only by a very slight margin. I've put down many 100s of .22lr rounds without any ammo related failures... and .25acp and .32acp firearms I've fired haven't been any more reliable. With pocket guns becoming more and more popular, I hope we see an increase in all these rounds and also good (new) pocket guns chambered in these rounds. I think it's crazy that pocket guns (like the Baby Browning for example) were immensely popular for the majority of the 20th century, but then became really rare in the last couple decades. They're every bit as useful now as they've always been... so nothing's changed really.
That's one point I think he missed in the review, the inherent accuracy of the .32. I upgraded my wife from a P32 to a Tomcat, because she wanted a safety. I had no trouble out of the box putting all the rounds on top of each other at 5-7 yards. I wouldn't use these types of pistols outside of bad breath range. The Tomcat is way fatter and heavier (nearing AL .38 snub or PF9 weight and size) but I love shooting it.
This is exactly what the round excels at. The little pocket 380 and 9mm pistols have some recoil that is just tough to tame and 32 fits in that spot perfectly. I have two Beretta 81s and they're fantastic pistols.

@@deucedeuce1572sure still useful. Though when you can shoot two boxes of 9 for the same price. Or can get an lcp max with just about as small a footprint in 380. There's a reason they fell off. That and I just never see the ammo on the shelf. I've debated on purchasing one just for shits and giggles but decided against it. Bc even if I can afford to feed it, still have to find it. I guess now with 30SC projectiles will be easier to find.
Appreciate the open thoughts on .32 ACP and sharing the benefits. It was the round for much of the cutting edge, historical development of auto pistols and we quite possibly would not have the auto pistol of today if it wasn't for the ground breaking work of designers in .32 auto. There are some extremely weird, one of a kind designed classic pistols out there from the past which is how I got into the .32 thing. You aren't an old gun guy, but it could be fun to see you do a video exploring the quirks of a Savage 1915 or Frommer Stop. There is room in a collection for .32s right along with the modern 9s. Thanks for another great video and the work you do for all us sinners out in viewing land!
Yeah, .32 in an excellent self defense round. I really hope it becomes more popular again. The same with .25acp too though (so the prices come down)... and I also hope we see more .22lr micro pocket guns. With modern guns and ammo, there's no reason we can't have a good collection of truly small pocket guns. They were immensely popular for the majority of the 20th century, but they fell out of favor after the last couple decades. With them gaining in popularity recently, I really hope (and believe) they can/will make a comeback.
.32 would be a great option in a pocket size pistol, but I haven't seen much if any ammo for it in any local shops. When i do see it im shocked by the price. I know its not a popular round, so it going to be expensive, but its a shame more pistols aren't sold in that caliber.
@@jaredmpp7633 It was one of the rounds that took a hit during the Covid fiasco and wasn't available. My LGS has it regularly now but it is 2x the price of 9. Supply and demand. I look online and find it often for a better price
@@deucedeuce1572 I totally agree. So many interesting options from the past and they aren’t insanely expensive in most cases. Walther model 4, Beretta 1935, Mauser 1914, Savage 1907 has the most beautiful blueing ever and the first double stack magazine… the list is endless. Check out C&Rsenal episodes if you haven’t yet. They do an excellent job of the history of many many .32s and their use in WW1. Fun to collect and some are well over 100 years old with ammo still available to enjoy shooting them!
Beretta Tomcat was my very first carry gun. I loved the fact that it was lightweight and easy to carry in my pocket. The break barrel design was also appealing because you can put one in the chamber without cycling the slide. You really have to watch those sharp points on the rear of the slide, because If you have a meaty hand and your grip is a little high you can get railroaded really quick. I'm glad beretta is keeping this pistol alive.

Even if they had the plain matt black finish, I prefer the old clean sleek Beretta designs - the original model 85, model 34, and the other small pocket pistols in .25 ACP and .22
.32 ACP is just an iconic round. Standard caliber for many European military/police sidearms in the 20th Century, helped to trigger and conclude a couple of wars, and James Bond and Sterling Archer swear by it.
JMB designed this cartridge over 100 years ago and we’re still talking about it. No-body wants to get shot with anything and the more options there are for law abiding citizens, Gerard Butler wouldn’t have gone nuts snatching up property. I’ve owned a KT p-32 and it was a fine gun, price aside and availability of the round, it makes a great ccw weapon. I’ve always wished the Ruger would make the LCP in this cartridge or at least a conversion for the original, but I choose to stick with 9mm and 9 short for my needs. This gun has always had my eye, but honestly it will stay in the display case for me. Thanks for the entertaining video. Keep’em coming.
I have the P32 and just bought a 1980 Beretta 81 at a gun show yesterday that has seen very little use. I also have the LCP Max, which I think is a great improvement over the original with amazing capacity. The Max in .32 would be great.
James once again has me wanting something small and light in my pocket. always great reviews love it, like someone said it does feel like a Tuxedo and I love that.
I just bought a 1980 Beretta 81 yesterday at a gun show after several years of wanting one. It has seen VERY little use and its virtual lack of recoil is truly amazing. My love for the.32 ACP round began after trying my buddy’s Ruger LCP and, having such brutal recoil, I decided to try the Kel-Tec P32 with the idea of carrying it. It had much more manageable recoil but, for various reasons, I didn’t think it would work for me as a carry. I settled on the LCP Max as my carry gun but I think .32 could definitely be a great summer carry and I may have to add the 30X to my “must have” list.
This past October, I bought myself a 3032 Tomcat and a 21A Bobcat for my wife. The Tomcat was priced at $449, with a $150 rebate. I have received rebate checks for both. That's $299 dollars. Compare that to $649 MSRP. I ran four boxes of Norma .32 ACP FMJ through the Tomcat. Initially, I had several failures to return to battery. Pushed it home with my thumb. However, the pistol broke in quickly, and by 150 rounds, the function was reliable. Since then, there have been no issues whatsoever. I bought two additional magazines. As per ammo... I tested and run Underwood 55gr Xtreme Defender. These were not tested by Lucky Gunner (who knows why?). These generate 125 lb/ft of muzzle energy, which should be plenty safe for the frame. These will penetrate 12 to 13 inches consistently and produce a respectable PWC. Give this ammo a try in your new model Tomcat. If you are feeling brave, consider Buffalo Bore's +P .32 ACP flat nose. These generate over 200 lb/ft at well over 1,000 FPS from the Tomcat. Obviously, there's no expansion. However, the flat nose does make for a reasonable PWC, and penetration is usually 16 inches or greater. I dared not shoot more than 5 through my 3032, but the redesigned Tomcat may be stout enough to not worry about cracking the frame. For the most part, I carry the Tomcat as a backup. However, if I am walking my wife's micro-mutt at night or going somewhere where I need deep concealment, I will carry it as my primary. I have found that the dirt cheap Uncle Mike's pocket holsters fit perfectly (Both Tomcat and Bobcat). Better than a DeSantis, for size and cost.
The Xtreme Defenders are Amazing in .380acp... and I'm really glad they came out with .32acp now too. The .380 Xtreme Defenders make the average .380 more powerful/capable than most 9mm... so I can only imagine the .32acp Xtreme Defenders would be equally as impressive. (Not more powerful, but more capable than even most .380acp rounds). The 32acp is a good round to start with already too.
I would take any 3032 over the 30x... but especially an older thinner slide 3032. If I ever get a 3032, I'll definitely put a thin slide on it and/or have the thick slide milled down.
@@carryeveryday910 No. Both the thin slide and thick slide one's crack. After switching to the thicker slides, they found out it does absolutely nothing to stop the frames from cracking... but they never switched back to the thin slides for some reason. Despite the slides being thicker, the bullets impart the exact amount of kinetic energy on them, so being heavier doesn't reduce any shock that the frame receives... and doesn't reduce the likelihood of cracking. If you have a thick slide version, you still can't shoot the heavier or hotter ammo in them, because they'll still crack just like the thin slide one's. I think that's why they came out with the 30x, because they needed a stronger frame. I'm not sure if the 3032 slides will fit on the 30x... but if they did, I would only buy one if I had a thin slide to put on it. I've always loved the 3032 and thought of it as one of the best pocket guns ever made... but I think the thick slide just defeats the purpose.
The 21A, 3032 and 30X are really cool designs AND many people still love metal and wood pistols. In terms of various chamberings for personal protection, I carry them all. Nobody wants to get shot whether it is with a 22LR or 44mag.
I believe this is the gun in mind when I saw James asking for opinions about .32 ACP online about a week or so ago. Something along the line of "do you think .32 ACP has a genuine use today?" Really cool to see that kind of interaction and taking others views into account
I inherited an older Beretta model 85, still looks new, single stack .380....smooth as silk to shoot, easy to conseal. Its all i carry now, i love it .
If it's not broken, fit it til it is. Beretta fixed at least one issue I had with mine. Moving the mag release button is smart. In summer, I carried my Tomcat in my back pocket and almost always released the mag when drawing it. Replaceable sights are also a good idea. In the end, the pistol is too fat and should come with 2 mags, one flush-fitting & one extended. Your review is spot on.
Ive had 1 for many years. Works flawlessly. Its a bit heavy but fits i n a pocket,and very managable recoil. At close range it will do the job. Shot placement with ANY caliber is #1. So with that said this comes from someone who has seen his Father killed in a hold up with a .25 cal. He was only 37 when murdered. NO ONE WANTS HOLES IN THEM. USING BALL AMMO GIVES BETTER PENETRATION FOR VITALS. Be safe Be vigilant and always be ready willing and able. Practice and train as often as possible.
I love the older 3032's with the thin slide and would prefer them over the new thick slide versions or the 30x any day. It's always been one of my favorite guns. With the newer thick slide versions and now the 30X though, there are other guns I would prefer over them (like the P32 for example or 380's like the LCP models, the SW BG380 and several others). Sorry to hear about your father. I think people have just forgotten how effective the smaller pocket guns/calibers really are. They were all very popular for the majority of the 20th century and they are no less effective now than they were back then. In fact, they're probably even more effective with modern ammo. (especially with rounds like Federal Punch 22lr and the Xtreme Defenders in .32acp and .380). I really hope that .25cp and .32acp make a comeback and reduce in price, because pocket guns are making a comeback now and I think that's a good thing. More people are starting to carry also which is good. It's very surprising how few people know about the smaller pocket guns like the NAA revolvers, the Baby Browning, the Bernardelli .22 and .25, the Walther Model 9 and several others... and how interested people get when I show them these guns and others in the same size range. I oftentimes hear people say things like "I would start carrying a gun if I had one of those"... or "I would carry every single day if I had one of those"... so it seems like it might be a good idea for gun companies to start producing micro .22's, .25's and .32's again.
Love my 3032. Got it: 1) because it's cool; 2) as a pocket BUG while driving. For my CCW qual, nearly doubled the rounds I'd put through it. Did just fine until 10 yards, then not so great. It is fun & easy to shoot, accurate enough, trivial recoil.
I've been carrying a Tomcat for 15 years or so; able to ruck and run w it and not worry about it bouncing around too much. I reload primarily 32 caliber cartridges, so this one is easy. Even used it on trap lines to keep the damage to hides to a minimum.
I did a video on clearing Tomcat malfunctions on TH-cam because in Tomcat reviews I don't see it covered. Many people buy the gun because they can't manually cycle the slide. Interestingly, Grisan makes a Beretta 86 tip up barrel knock off and in the latest American Rifleman magazine had an ad for a magazine with a spare round clipped below the magazine floorplate...presumably to allow the shooter to have a single round on hand to drop into the barrel when/if the pistol has a malfunction. When I carry my Tomcat I've taken to carrying a loose round in the 5th pocket of my jeans. Otherwise, the shooter has to tip up the barrel, drop the magazine, strip out a round from the magazine (not the easiest mag to manually take out a round), drop it into the barrel, close the barrel, reinsert the magazine and only then get back to shooting at the threat. It isn't a deal killer as 32 ACP centerfire ammo is unlikely to fail - much less likely than the 22 long rifle used by the Bobcat - but it is something that people should be aware of when choosing the Tomcat for self defense.
I've fallen in love with .32 caliber. I switched from .38/.357 revolvers to .327 Federal Magnum revolvers. .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum are all great cartridges.
I love both my Bobcat and Tomcat I often carry the Tomcat during hot summer weather when I just want something in my shorts 🩳 pockets while walking the dogs and running errands around town.
Both excellent guns. You don't carry the Bobcat? (Aside from the newer thick slide 3032's and the larger/heavier 30x... I wouldn't see much point of having a 21A if you already own a 3032. If I owned any version of the 3032 though, it would definitely be the older thin slide version).

I bought the original when it came out in ‘96. Used as a backup to my service Sig P220 45acp. LOVE THE GUN. Yes I qualified with it. Could knock down 5-6 pound steel plates at 15 yards (took 2 hits though)
Thanks for the Kel-Tec p32 shout out. Underrated for the “beer from the bodega” role and as always with smaller calibers, shot placement matters. But with minimal recoil 9of the .32 round, shot placement with a .32 is much easier than .380, in the same size pistols.
Got one when I had a hand and shoulder surgery and couldn't handle a real gun or rack anything. It's tiny, hides in any pocket, I can put all the rounds in a light switch one handed from across a room. Main rule of gun fighting is bring a gun to the fight. It checks that box.
Great review. I'm a .32 cal fan, especially fired from the Walther PP barrel length of 3.9". It is a whole different cartridge compared to the snubby Beretta or even PPK, and there is a serious lack of recoil. Add to that a great trigger. slim design and hammer block safety I think it's my favorite handgun.
Recently purchased a 1964 jetfire 25acp that still functions perfectly.I dont think i could love a gun more..380,9,.45,yeah i got em all .some cost over 5 times what i paid for this little gem ($220) and no i dont think you can take out a gang with 9 rounds of .25 but something about it makes me never want to leave the house without it in my pocket.Been eyeballing a 30x at my LGS but am spoiled with the size and look of the vintage models.
If I get a .32 the ultimate "style points" gun is a Seecamp. They did the "deep carry" thing before CCW was really a thing in this country. They're just cool.
.32 ACP has a problem because it’s semi-rimmed. You’re never going to get the same capacities compare the model 81 and model 84. 32 doesn’t stack well.
@@Daekar3 yeah works perfectly 🤨. Keltec p32 also brings up the rimlock issue to which the best answer is simply FMJ only. This is why the Chinese made the Type 64 .32 cartridge. 30SC should have been on more of a 380 power level to fill a niche.
I also carry the LCP Max and absolutely love it. I didn't think I would after trying my buddy's original LCP. That thing was very difficult to hold onto and stung like hell. The slightly longer grip on the Max makes a world of difference.
I actually love the 3032... but I wouldn't even bother buying one of these. I won't even buy a new 3032 with the thick slide. It's ridiculously over-sized and it did Nothing to stop the frames from cracking. I think the 3032 is one of the best pocket guns ever invented... but being bigger and heavier just makes many other options better. I would pick an original 3032 over a P32, but I would pick a P32 over a 30X any day. The 30x is just significantly longer, significantly taller, is almost twice as thick and significantly more than twice the weight. Those things all add up and it's perfectly reasonable for people to consider them. The very point of the 3032 was to make a Double Action 32acp metal framed gun as small and as light as possible (and this ain't it). I just don't see any use for the 30x as a self defense weapon with the 3032 being an option.
I have the 21A .22 Tomcat. When I first bought it, I was totally disappointed in the jamming of the shells because it didn't have the extractors. Since I switched to CCI ammo, I've had no problems.
Nothing wrong with that. It's an excellent gun and with the LCP II, there's no real Need for a 3032. It is an excellent gun though and I can see why many people would choose it over an LCPII or would choose it over other guns. It's one of the best CCW guns ever invented in my opinion and it's one of the smallest true Double Action .32 pocket guns (I can't recall any others at the moment anyways). If you don't mind me asking... You have the .38 and not the .22lr?... and any thoughts on the 22lr?
@@deucedeuce1572I have the LCPII in .22LR. It's utterly reliable and truly a pocket pistol. I'm not a huge fan of the sights but I haven't heard others complain about that. Always gets compliments on how nice it looks and build quality.
I've owned the 21A, Tomcat and Bobcat in 22, .25 and .32 for years. I think that they're unusual and I enjoy them. But I don't see any changes in the design that would make it a practical CCW option. There are just better choices for that shopper. But if you have a need for a mouse gun and you want to carry something that's pretty damn cool, it should be on your short list.
I carried a PPK 32acp from age 14 to age 35 (roughly). Never thought I was undergunned because I can hit what I’m aiming at with it. I’m not a law enforcement officer. I’m more likely to FLEE than FIGHT. But if I have to fight I’m ok with a 32acp that I know well. I like the PPK’s DA/SA action which is just like this Tomcat. I ended up buying a used Tomcat and the friggin frame cracked! I’m waiting on Beretta Customer Service. I liked the size and heft of the Tomcat. Feels like a nice weapon in hand. If I could be assured the frames are ok now I’d consider a 30X to put into my rotation. My MAIN day to day never leave home without it is a Seecamp 32acp. An even smaller DAO gun. That gun melts into a pocket. I ripped apart a Remora sticky holster and made it fit my Seecamp. I can hide that in elastic band gym shorts with a tshirt and flip flops. Nobody would ever think I’m carrying. But don’t mess with me because my 32 can sting. Beretta makes a fine gun. My 21A is so fun to shoot. Never a failure using ANY 22 ammo. I like carrying it fishing in case I need to dispatch a big toothy fish - a load of CCI birdshot placed in the head from about 2 feet while he’s just at the edge of the boat makes them fall asleep for easy handling. Try handling a 25 pound red snapper who is flapping around on a deck with spikes that stab through a calf muscle and a jaw protector plate that is every bit as sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel. I think it’s best to gaff them and then blast them with CCI’s. That 21A is a tool in the toolbox. I’m a fan of the 3032. Wish mine wasn’t CRACKED!!!
I'm a fan, for sure. Is .32 the best SD caliber? No. Is it better than not carrying? Yes. Essentially, I agree with the review and the points made from reddit. I gave my father in law my 3032 tomcat and a few boxes of rounds because after decades of being a contractor, his hand strength wasn't what it used to be. Now he has a pistol that he can load, unload, and fire without beating his hands up. I have a 380 ruger that is super easy to walk around with, but I was a much better shot with the 32 Beretta because the recoil is so much less. If you've not shot a 32acp pistol, really encourage it. A lot of people are carrying 380s who, in my opinion, would be better served by a 32 because it is so much easier to shoot. The same goes for many in the snub nose .38spl crowd who will soon have a 32 H&R mag option. Now we just need ammo in those calibers to become more affordable.
When I first saw this I thought Beretta had made the 3032 in the new .30 super carry chambering. But I guess it would be too hot a load to make into that small a frame. Would be awesome though huh?
They definitely do... but It's extremely rare for a self defense situation to happen at a distance that a red dot would ever be useful... but they definitely do happen. I think the vast majority of people would be more burdened by having a red dot on a pocket gun than would ever be helped by one though. (and a center fire pocket gun isn't really the kind of gun that most people would ever take to the range to shoot for fun, especially with the cost of .25acp and .32acp ammo).
I'm carrying a 30X a lot, but to me it's a little heavy and large for pocket carry, I carry it in a OWB holster, it works for me. I'm getting older and the tip up barrel and 32 are easier for me all the way around, I like it.
I suspect if you took the 3032 magazines and cut a match catch on them in the new spot, you can get them to work. Part of moving the mag button, means the catch inside also got moved. So if you cut the slot in the 3032 mags in the newer higher location, they will likely work flawlessly.
I have an original Tomcat with the skinny slide. Over 5k rounds w/o any issues or cracked slide. I love the gun but I don’t love the wider slide. Def an up close gun, not good at 25 yards.
I love the looks and style of the gun. So much cooler than my LCP MAX. But I already feel a bit guilty for carrying 0.380 and I really don’t want to go even lower 😂
I carry the original LCP in 380 acp at work every day. It's a non permissive environment. I'm interested in this because it's just old school beautiful. Definitely have fallen in love

Literally the only calibre missing in my pistol collection is .32. I’ll be buying one. I definitely want a threaded barrel though. I’d like to see how it’ll do with a can compared to my 21A.
All that’s really needed is the improved sights and an extra magazine with the higher capacity. Leave the length and width alone. Options to make it bigger are fine, but leave the original pocket size as the default.
I work in an office environment and my 3032 has been my office carry for years. The DeSantis tuck or nemesis holster is perfect 👌 I actually own two of them now because a lady I was dating for a while liked mine
my summer light shorts pocket carry is a .32 NAA. tough trigger, but goes in your pocket w/o a soft holster and no worries with one in the chamber. For me, its not an "aim" gun. Strictly point and shoot, which I practice. Any gun you carry and practice with is a win.
I have the 3032. I have no problem throwing it in a coat pocket for quick trips or when out for a walk....don't even need a holster. Be nice to see a 30x version that was nearly identical with grips and magazine.

A good friend worked for a US intelligence organization and carried a Walther PP (32 cal) during his career. I met him earlier in our service. He stayed, I did not. Visiting later after retirement, I commented about the PP on his night table ; he said he carried it while traveling for the agency. Other than that, he wouldn't comment; I wouldn't have expected him to say more, would have been shocked if he had. You're 41, I'm 81. I first carried a .45 cal as a platoon leader in Vietnam. Over the years I've sold my very accurate .45's switched to Beretta 9mm's, more recently the Baretta .380 and really like the look of the new Beretta Tom Cat .32 cal. Feels like a good sized pocket self defense pistol for me. I'll buy one when available. I still regularly shoot, but my good range-day partners have been dying off.

lol. I honestly, very strongly recommend the original over the 30x. Newer doesn't always mean better. If I was to purchase one today, I would buy a 3032 without any hesitation at all. I would even prefer a used older one with the thinner slide over the newer thick slide versions of the 3032.
@@deucedeuce1572 Yeah, I agree. My 3032 just feels really good in my hand. It's thin on top, but has kind of a fat ass (grip) that just fills your hand nicely. Ergonomic differences aside from the 30X, the frame cracking thing is a little worrisome, but it's not like I'm trying to do a Turkish shotgun burndown with it.
@@g54b95 Yeah, as far as I know, the frame will never crack if you shoot the 71gr ammo in it or lighter. It only ever happens if you shoot the heavier ammo and the thick slides that they put on them never fixed the problem, so I think it's weird that they still continue to produce them like that. It makes no sense to make a gun so much fatter and heavier for no reason at all. They had a couple slides crack, but it wasn't even remotely a common enough problem to worry about. A few Glock slides have cracked too. I've seen about a dozen Glock slides with caved out breech faces for example... but Glock don't go turning their guns into Hi Points over it.
Same thing happened with my Mrs... We actually ended up sending the old version back because it kept malfunctioning. Beretta was really good about it though and gave us the option to replace with either the APX, the 80X, or the new version when it is officially released.
Lemme guess, you found one of the rebate deals on PSA or something. They do those rebate deals to clear inventory for new models.
I agree on the criticism about not shipping with a flat magazine. Weird omission considering the philosophy of the gun.
While the wood grips are beautiful, I agree that they contradict the gun’s designed purpose (compact carry) given how thick they are. Let’s hope they offer beautiful slim grips as an add-on option.

I'm glad to see 32 ACP receiving some love. I sometimes travel for work and my teenage daughter, who is alone, has a Beretta Model 81 that she is far more effective with than a similarly sized 9mm or 380. The . 32 allows her to carry a helluva lot more firepower than a .22 caliber. It's basically the same recoil as a .22 caliber but twice the energy. Plus, she can shoot the eye of a bird flyin with that Beretta model 81. She can't hit squat with a 9mm
Yeah, the 32acp is an excellent round. I wish it was more popular and less expensive... just like the .25acp. There are so many excellent pocket guns chambered in .25acp... but it's no more powerful than .22lr and if it's any more reliable than modern .22lr self defense rounds (Like CCI and Federal Punch) it's only by a very slight margin. I've put down many 100s of .22lr rounds without any ammo related failures... and .25acp and .32acp firearms I've fired haven't been any more reliable. With pocket guns becoming more and more popular, I hope we see an increase in all these rounds and also good (new) pocket guns chambered in these rounds. I think it's crazy that pocket guns (like the Baby Browning for example) were immensely popular for the majority of the 20th century, but then became really rare in the last couple decades. They're every bit as useful now as they've always been... so nothing's changed really.
That's one point I think he missed in the review, the inherent accuracy of the .32. I upgraded my wife from a P32 to a Tomcat, because she wanted a safety. I had no trouble out of the box putting all the rounds on top of each other at 5-7 yards. I wouldn't use these types of pistols outside of bad breath range. The Tomcat is way fatter and heavier (nearing AL .38 snub or PF9 weight and size) but I love shooting it.
This is exactly what the round excels at. The little pocket 380 and 9mm pistols have some recoil that is just tough to tame and 32 fits in that spot perfectly. I have two Beretta 81s and they're fantastic pistols.

That and I just never see the ammo on the shelf. I've debated on purchasing one just for shits and giggles but decided against it. Bc even if I can afford to feed it, still have to find it. I guess now with 30SC projectiles will be easier to find.
Appreciate the open thoughts on .32 ACP and sharing the benefits. It was the round for much of the cutting edge, historical development of auto pistols and we quite possibly would not have the auto pistol of today if it wasn't for the ground breaking work of designers in .32 auto. There are some extremely weird, one of a kind designed classic pistols out there from the past which is how I got into the .32 thing. You aren't an old gun guy, but it could be fun to see you do a video exploring the quirks of a Savage 1915 or Frommer Stop. There is room in a collection for .32s right along with the modern 9s. Thanks for another great video and the work you do for all us sinners out in viewing land!
Yeah, .32 in an excellent self defense round. I really hope it becomes more popular again. The same with .25acp too though (so the prices come down)... and I also hope we see more .22lr micro pocket guns. With modern guns and ammo, there's no reason we can't have a good collection of truly small pocket guns. They were immensely popular for the majority of the 20th century, but they fell out of favor after the last couple decades. With them gaining in popularity recently, I really hope (and believe) they can/will make a comeback.
.32 would be a great option in a pocket size pistol, but I haven't seen much if any ammo for it in any local shops. When i do see it im shocked by the price. I know its not a popular round, so it going to be expensive, but its a shame more pistols aren't sold in that caliber.

It was one of the rounds that took a hit during the Covid fiasco and wasn't available. My LGS has it regularly now but it is 2x the price of 9. Supply and demand. I look online and find it often for a better price
@@deucedeuce1572 I totally agree. So many interesting options from the past and they aren’t insanely expensive in most cases. Walther model 4, Beretta 1935, Mauser 1914, Savage 1907 has the most beautiful blueing ever and the first double stack magazine… the list is endless. Check out C&Rsenal episodes if you haven’t yet. They do an excellent job of the history of many many .32s and their use in WW1. Fun to collect and some are well over 100 years old with ammo still available to enjoy shooting them!

Beretta Tomcat was my very first carry gun. I loved the fact that it was lightweight and easy to carry in my pocket. The break barrel design was also appealing because you can put one in the chamber without cycling the slide. You really have to watch those sharp points on the rear of the slide, because If you have a meaty hand and your grip is a little high you can get railroaded really quick. I'm glad beretta is keeping this pistol alive.
I have a Tomcat and an old Beretta 81 and I love both. My fave .32 pistols and I will never get rid of them!

.32 ACP is just an iconic round. Standard caliber for many European military/police sidearms in the 20th Century, helped to trigger and conclude a couple of wars, and James Bond and Sterling Archer swear by it.
My favorite Beretta is still the 84 or 85. The 8000 cougar is also underrated
JMB designed this cartridge over 100 years ago and we’re still talking about it. No-body wants to get shot with anything and the more options there are for law abiding citizens, Gerard Butler wouldn’t have gone nuts snatching up property.
I’ve owned a KT p-32 and it was a fine gun, price aside and availability of the round, it makes a great ccw weapon. I’ve always wished the Ruger would make the LCP in this cartridge or at least a conversion for the original, but I choose to stick with 9mm and 9 short for my needs.

I have the P32 and just bought a 1980 Beretta 81 at a gun show yesterday that has seen very little use. I also have the LCP Max, which I think is a great improvement over the original with amazing capacity. The Max in .32 would be great.

I just bought a 1980 Beretta 81 yesterday at a gun show after several years of wanting one. It has seen VERY little use and its virtual lack of recoil is truly amazing. My love for the.32 ACP round began after trying my buddy’s Ruger LCP and, having such brutal recoil, I decided to try the Kel-Tec P32 with the idea of carrying it. It had much more manageable recoil but, for various reasons, I didn’t think it would work for me as a carry. I settled on the LCP Max as my carry gun but I think .32 could definitely be a great summer carry and I may have to add the 30X to my “must have” list.

This past October, I bought myself a 3032 Tomcat and a 21A Bobcat for my wife. The Tomcat was priced at $449, with a $150 rebate. I have received rebate checks for both. That's $299 dollars. Compare that to $649 MSRP. I ran four boxes of Norma .32 ACP FMJ through the Tomcat. Initially, I had several failures to return to battery. Pushed it home with my thumb. However, the pistol broke in quickly, and by 150 rounds, the function was reliable. Since then, there have been no issues whatsoever. I bought two additional magazines.
As per ammo... I tested and run Underwood 55gr Xtreme Defender. These were not tested by Lucky Gunner (who knows why?). These generate 125 lb/ft of muzzle energy, which should be plenty safe for the frame. These will penetrate 12 to 13 inches consistently and produce a respectable PWC. Give this ammo a try in your new model Tomcat. If you are feeling brave, consider Buffalo Bore's +P .32 ACP flat nose. These generate over 200 lb/ft at well over 1,000 FPS from the Tomcat. Obviously, there's no expansion. However, the flat nose does make for a reasonable PWC, and penetration is usually 16 inches or greater. I dared not shoot more than 5 through my 3032, but the redesigned Tomcat may be stout enough to not worry about cracking the frame.
For the most part, I carry the Tomcat as a backup. However, if I am walking my wife's micro-mutt at night or going somewhere where I need deep concealment, I will carry it as my primary. I have found that the dirt cheap Uncle Mike's pocket holsters fit perfectly (Both Tomcat and Bobcat). Better than a DeSantis, for size and cost.
The price of 32ACP makes this a big NO for me.
The Xtreme Defenders are Amazing in .380acp... and I'm really glad they came out with .32acp now too. The .380 Xtreme Defenders make the average .380 more powerful/capable than most 9mm... so I can only imagine the .32acp Xtreme Defenders would be equally as impressive. (Not more powerful, but more capable than even most .380acp rounds). The 32acp is a good round to start with already too.

If LTT would add the 30X to their lineup, I'd be all about it. But I'd take the LTT 3032 over the factory 30X. And we need a review of the LTT 3032!
I would take any 3032 over the 30x... but especially an older thinner slide 3032. If I ever get a 3032, I'll definitely put a thin slide on it and/or have the thick slide milled down.

@@carryeveryday910 No. Both the thin slide and thick slide one's crack. After switching to the thicker slides, they found out it does absolutely nothing to stop the frames from cracking... but they never switched back to the thin slides for some reason. Despite the slides being thicker, the bullets impart the exact amount of kinetic energy on them, so being heavier doesn't reduce any shock that the frame receives... and doesn't reduce the likelihood of cracking. If you have a thick slide version, you still can't shoot the heavier or hotter ammo in them, because they'll still crack just like the thin slide one's.
I think that's why they came out with the 30x, because they needed a stronger frame. I'm not sure if the 3032 slides will fit on the 30x... but if they did, I would only buy one if I had a thin slide to put on it. I've always loved the 3032 and thought of it as one of the best pocket guns ever made... but I think the thick slide just defeats the purpose.
The 21A, 3032 and 30X are really cool designs AND many people still love metal and wood pistols. In terms of various chamberings for personal protection, I carry them all. Nobody wants to get shot whether it is with a 22LR or 44mag.
For .32 ACP users look at Underwood .32 ACP +P with Lehigh's Xtreme Defender shaped copper bullets.

I inherited an older Beretta model 85, still looks new, single stack .380....smooth as silk to shoot, easy to conseal. Its all i carry now, i love it .
If it's not broken, fit it til it is. Beretta fixed at least one issue I had with mine. Moving the mag release button is smart. In summer, I carried my Tomcat in my back pocket and almost always released the mag when drawing it. Replaceable sights are also a good idea. In the end, the pistol is too fat and should come with 2 mags, one flush-fitting & one extended. Your review is spot on.

I love the older 3032's with the thin slide and would prefer them over the new thick slide versions or the 30x any day. It's always been one of my favorite guns. With the newer thick slide versions and now the 30X though, there are other guns I would prefer over them (like the P32 for example or 380's like the LCP models, the SW BG380 and several others). Sorry to hear about your father. I think people have just forgotten how effective the smaller pocket guns/calibers really are. They were all very popular for the majority of the 20th century and they are no less effective now than they were back then. In fact, they're probably even more effective with modern ammo. (especially with rounds like Federal Punch 22lr and the Xtreme Defenders in .32acp and .380). I really hope that .25cp and .32acp make a comeback and reduce in price, because pocket guns are making a comeback now and I think that's a good thing. More people are starting to carry also which is good. It's very surprising how few people know about the smaller pocket guns like the NAA revolvers, the Baby Browning, the Bernardelli .22 and .25, the Walther Model 9 and several others... and how interested people get when I show them these guns and others in the same size range. I oftentimes hear people say things like "I would start carrying a gun if I had one of those"... or "I would carry every single day if I had one of those"... so it seems like it might be a good idea for gun companies to start producing micro .22's, .25's and .32's again.
I agree - I am gonna buy one of these because the tip up barrel is just plain fun and cool - I'll keep concealed carrying my P365.

Love my 3032. Got it: 1) because it's cool; 2) as a pocket BUG while driving. For my CCW qual, nearly doubled the rounds I'd put through it. Did just fine until 10 yards, then not so great. It is fun & easy to shoot, accurate enough, trivial recoil.
Hopefully a new release in the 32 acp pocket gun field may inspire Ruger to make a 32 LCP

I've been carrying a Tomcat for 15 years or so; able to ruck and run w it and not worry about it bouncing around too much. I reload primarily 32 caliber cartridges, so this one is easy. Even used it on trap lines to keep the damage to hides to a minimum.

I did a video on clearing Tomcat malfunctions on TH-cam because in Tomcat reviews I don't see it covered. Many people buy the gun because they can't manually cycle the slide. Interestingly, Grisan makes a Beretta 86 tip up barrel knock off and in the latest American Rifleman magazine had an ad for a magazine with a spare round clipped below the magazine floorplate...presumably to allow the shooter to have a single round on hand to drop into the barrel when/if the pistol has a malfunction. When I carry my Tomcat I've taken to carrying a loose round in the 5th pocket of my jeans. Otherwise, the shooter has to tip up the barrel, drop the magazine, strip out a round from the magazine (not the easiest mag to manually take out a round), drop it into the barrel, close the barrel, reinsert the magazine and only then get back to shooting at the threat. It isn't a deal killer as 32 ACP centerfire ammo is unlikely to fail - much less likely than the 22 long rifle used by the Bobcat - but it is something that people should be aware of when choosing the Tomcat for self defense.

I've fallen in love with .32 caliber. I switched from .38/.357 revolvers to .327 Federal Magnum revolvers. .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum are all great cartridges.

I love both my Bobcat and Tomcat I often carry the Tomcat during hot summer weather when I just want something in my shorts 🩳 pockets while walking the dogs and running errands around town.
Both excellent guns. You don't carry the Bobcat? (Aside from the newer thick slide 3032's and the larger/heavier 30x... I wouldn't see much point of having a 21A if you already own a 3032. If I owned any version of the 3032 though, it would definitely be the older thin slide version).

I bought the original when it came out in ‘96. Used as a backup to my service Sig P220 45acp. LOVE THE GUN. Yes I qualified with it. Could knock down 5-6 pound steel plates at 15 yards (took 2 hits though)
Thanks for the Kel-Tec p32 shout out. Underrated for the “beer from the bodega” role and as always with smaller calibers, shot placement matters. But with minimal recoil 9of the .32 round, shot placement with a .32 is much easier than .380, in the same size pistols.
Got one when I had a hand and shoulder surgery and couldn't handle a real gun or rack anything.
It's tiny, hides in any pocket, I can put all the rounds in a light switch one handed from across a room.
Main rule of gun fighting is bring a gun to the fight. It checks that box.
Great review. I'm a .32 cal fan, especially fired from the Walther PP barrel length of 3.9". It is a whole different cartridge compared to the snubby Beretta or even PPK, and there is a serious lack of recoil. Add to that a great trigger. slim design and hammer block safety I think it's my favorite handgun.

Recently purchased a 1964 jetfire 25acp that still functions perfectly.I dont think i could love a gun more..380,9,.45,yeah i got em all .some cost over 5 times what i paid for this little gem ($220) and no i dont think you can take out a gang with 9 rounds of .25 but something about it makes me never want to leave the house without it in my pocket.Been eyeballing a 30x at my LGS but am spoiled with the size and look of the vintage models.

If I get a .32 the ultimate "style points" gun is a Seecamp. They did the "deep carry" thing before CCW was really a thing in this country. They're just cool.

.32 ACP has a problem because it’s semi-rimmed. You’re never going to get the same capacities compare the model 81 and model 84. 32 doesn’t stack well.
I feel the same way but imagine the 365 in 30 super carry.

@@Daekar3 yeah works perfectly 🤨. Keltec p32 also brings up the rimlock issue to which the best answer is simply FMJ only. This is why the Chinese made the Type 64 .32 cartridge. 30SC should have been on more of a 380 power level to fill a niche.

Thank you for the video. My favorite and only pocket carry that I own is the Ruger LCP max with a 12 round mag, it’s home is a Sticky pocket holster.
I also carry the LCP Max and absolutely love it. I didn't think I would after trying my buddy's original LCP. That thing was very difficult to hold onto and stung like hell. The slightly longer grip on the Max makes a world of difference.
If you pick up a 30x and complain that it's heavy... the gun is not the problem

I actually love the 3032... but I wouldn't even bother buying one of these. I won't even buy a new 3032 with the thick slide. It's ridiculously over-sized and it did Nothing to stop the frames from cracking. I think the 3032 is one of the best pocket guns ever invented... but being bigger and heavier just makes many other options better. I would pick an original 3032 over a P32, but I would pick a P32 over a 30X any day. The 30x is just significantly longer, significantly taller, is almost twice as thick and significantly more than twice the weight. Those things all add up and it's perfectly reasonable for people to consider them. The very point of the 3032 was to make a Double Action 32acp metal framed gun as small and as light as possible (and this ain't it). I just don't see any use for the 30x as a self defense weapon with the 3032 being an option.
Also
If 1 ounce of extra beef to prevent frame cracking is too much, you have muscular & mental issues.
The Beretta company will be releasing the 30x and the new 21 series in bulk by Xmas.

I have the 21A .22 Tomcat. When I first bought it, I was totally disappointed in the jamming of the shells because it didn't have the extractors. Since I switched to CCI ammo, I've had no problems.
My wife carries a tomcat, and she loves it.

Nothing wrong with that. It's an excellent gun and with the LCP II, there's no real Need for a 3032. It is an excellent gun though and I can see why many people would choose it over an LCPII or would choose it over other guns. It's one of the best CCW guns ever invented in my opinion and it's one of the smallest true Double Action .32 pocket guns (I can't recall any others at the moment anyways). If you don't mind me asking... You have the .38 and not the .22lr?... and any thoughts on the 22lr?

@@deucedeuce1572I have the LCPII in .22LR. It's utterly reliable and truly a pocket pistol. I'm not a huge fan of the sights but I haven't heard others complain about that. Always gets compliments on how nice it looks and build quality.
I've owned the 21A, Tomcat and Bobcat in 22, .25 and .32 for years. I think that they're unusual and I enjoy them. But I don't see any changes in the design that would make it a practical CCW option. There are just better choices for that shopper. But if you have a need for a mouse gun and you want to carry something that's pretty damn cool, it should be on your short list.
As with most of my recent small Beretta purchases, I’ll probably wait for PSA to put it on sale.
I could only afford the p-32 but its my edc for 13 years now. Easily in the pocket holster carry.
I carried a PPK 32acp from age 14 to age 35 (roughly). Never thought I was undergunned because I can hit what I’m aiming at with it.
I’m not a law enforcement officer. I’m more likely to FLEE than FIGHT. But if I have to fight I’m ok with a 32acp that I know well.
I like the PPK’s DA/SA action which is just like this Tomcat. I ended up buying a used Tomcat and the friggin frame cracked! I’m waiting on Beretta Customer Service. I liked the size and heft of the Tomcat. Feels like a nice weapon in hand. If I could be assured the frames are ok now I’d consider a 30X to put into my rotation.
My MAIN day to day never leave home without it is a Seecamp 32acp. An even smaller DAO gun. That gun melts into a pocket. I ripped apart a Remora sticky holster and made it fit my Seecamp. I can hide that in elastic band gym shorts with a tshirt and flip flops. Nobody would ever think I’m carrying. But don’t mess with me because my 32 can sting.
Beretta makes a fine gun. My 21A is so fun to shoot. Never a failure using ANY 22 ammo. I like carrying it fishing in case I need to dispatch a big toothy fish - a load of CCI birdshot placed in the head from about 2 feet while he’s just at the edge of the boat makes them fall asleep for easy handling. Try handling a 25 pound red snapper who is flapping around on a deck with spikes that stab through a calf muscle and a jaw protector plate that is every bit as sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel. I think it’s best to gaff them and then blast them with CCI’s. That 21A is a tool in the toolbox.

I'm a fan, for sure. Is .32 the best SD caliber? No. Is it better than not carrying? Yes. Essentially, I agree with the review and the points made from reddit.
I gave my father in law my 3032 tomcat and a few boxes of rounds because after decades of being a contractor, his hand strength wasn't what it used to be. Now he has a pistol that he can load, unload, and fire without beating his hands up.
I have a 380 ruger that is super easy to walk around with, but I was a much better shot with the 32 Beretta because the recoil is so much less.
If you've not shot a 32acp pistol, really encourage it. A lot of people are carrying 380s who, in my opinion, would be better served by a 32 because it is so much easier to shoot. The same goes for many in the snub nose .38spl crowd who will soon have a 32 H&R mag option. Now we just need ammo in those calibers to become more affordable.
When I first saw this I thought Beretta had made the 3032 in the new .30 super carry chambering. But I guess it would be too hot a load to make into that small a frame. Would be awesome though huh?

It's kind of amazing to think simply adding a red dot to these little contraptions probably increases their effectiveness by orders of magnitude.
They definitely do... but It's extremely rare for a self defense situation to happen at a distance that a red dot would ever be useful... but they definitely do happen. I think the vast majority of people would be more burdened by having a red dot on a pocket gun than would ever be helped by one though. (and a center fire pocket gun isn't really the kind of gun that most people would ever take to the range to shoot for fun, especially with the cost of .25acp and .32acp ammo).
I'm carrying a 30X a lot, but to me it's a little heavy and large for pocket carry, I carry it in a OWB holster, it works for me. I'm getting older and the tip up barrel and 32 are easier for me all the way around, I like it.
I suspect if you took the 3032 magazines and cut a match catch on them in the new spot, you can get them to work. Part of moving the mag button, means the catch inside also got moved. So if you cut the slot in the 3032 mags in the newer higher location, they will likely work flawlessly.

I have an original Tomcat with the skinny slide. Over 5k rounds w/o any issues or cracked slide. I love the gun but I don’t love the wider slide. Def an up close gun, not good at 25 yards.
I love the looks and style of the gun. So much cooler than my LCP MAX. But I already feel a bit guilty for carrying 0.380 and I really don’t want to go even lower 😂
Yeah, the LCP MAX is king of pocket carry but it does lack the elegance of this one.

I just bought one yesterday at a gun show. It was made in 1980 and, when I pulled it apart, I was amazed how little use it has had. It’s a real pleasure to shoot with virtually no recoil. I am in love!

Literally the only calibre missing in my pistol collection is .32. I’ll be buying one. I definitely want a threaded barrel though. I’d like to see how it’ll do with a can compared to my 21A.

All that’s really needed is the improved sights and an extra magazine with the higher capacity. Leave the length and width alone. Options to make it bigger are fine, but leave the original pocket size as the default.
I had got rimlock on mine a couple times. So I sold mine. I wish someone would make a magazine just for hollow points to stop rimlock.
I work in an office environment and my 3032 has been my office carry for years. The DeSantis tuck or nemesis holster is perfect 👌 I actually own two of them now because a lady I was dating for a while liked mine
my summer light shorts pocket carry is a .32 NAA. tough trigger, but goes in your pocket w/o a soft holster and no worries with one in the chamber. For me, its not an "aim" gun. Strictly point and shoot, which I practice. Any gun you carry and practice with is a win.

I have the 3032. I have no problem throwing it in a coat pocket for quick trips or when out for a walk....don't even need a holster. Be nice to see a 30x version that was nearly identical with grips and magazine.
