The first 3 sequences were the best parts of the storytelling. I literally could just play a game with Haytham and his friends and enemies in it. I loved it so much while it lasted
17:22 You almost had it. You almost managed one line about Charles Lee without breaking. I do so appreciate that no matter the video, no matter how long Lee appears, you add the choking scene.
the moment where connor cuts ties with haytham after he exposes washington's plans actually makes a lot of sense and i dont believe is rushed (if it was during production it would make sense but the writing doesnt read as rushed to me). connor openly states that he doesnt trust or like haytham but was still willing to try to make a relationship happen. the image of charles lee strangling connor which led him to believe his village was burned by him by haytham's command is burned into his head and any rememberence of that trauma causes connor to lash out as shown throughout the game. when haytham exposes washington's plan to connor, he cuts ties with him and explicetly states that he doesnt know whether to believe haytham had this information all along, that washington burned his village down as a kid, or that he found out about it recently. these are reasonable assumptions from connor considering haythams behavior during their escapades and his decision to cut ties, on top of the imminent danger his village is in (which he has a much stronger connection to than haytham) i believe is in line with his character. its a very emotionally charged moment for connor and it makes sense that he cut ties then and there and its consisent with connors initial goal that his village comes first. its also consistent with connor 'thinking with his heart' personality. another thought: i think youre too harsh on the connor and haytham fight in game. connor is literally attacking his member's base so his outburst makes sense albeit with less than ideal character work (like you said ziio softened haytham). and youre right that the memory corridor does redeem the fight for things that shouldve been done during the fight. besides those two criticisms your video is excellent and so is your connor analysis. loving your content!
I know it’s unlikely since ubisoft is Ubisoft but I really hope we get more Haytham or Shay content eventually…. I love them both so much (as individuals not as a ship) and they are the most interesting characters in the franchise to me
For me all the older Assasin's creeds needs a remake. We need to see more of connor, which even though he is my favorite assasin by context and lore but he is lacking so much personality, like, i vision connor as someone with anger issues and rebelious, but also when he is calm he is rather adorable, like animals, his biggest dream is to have his whole family for himself, or have a child like curiosity towards new things, i would love to see the cold and rough connor become someone more human. I need more of haytham trying to manipulate his son to be with him, side by side as a templar like him, god i love Assasin's creed 3 so much, It's a shame ubisot will never respect their most old fandom.
Haythem Kenway, as a character, was such wasted potential in these games. He would be the perfect protagonist for an Assassin's Creed TV adaptation. Assassin's Creed 3 as a game, feels like it was written as a novel, in a literary style rather than a video game. The Assassin's Creed Forsaken novel is a fantastic book, that goes further in depth into who he is, delving into his inner feelings, thoughts, motivations and internal conflicts far more than the game did. There are entire scenes and events that dont appear in AC 3, and are exclusive to the novel; I actually recommend go read the book, rather than playing the game it was based on
Even if the book is really good, it killed every hope to have anything else about him (a game, movie,...) For exemple AC Rogue shoul have been about Haytham but because of the book they changed it to Shay
47:00 I think this is like Arno killing Bellec in Unity-one chance to see if Connor has the determination to kill even him to pursue his goals. If Connor didn’t have the nerve, he’d die-but Connor-in a way-met his expectations
The reason why Haytham is so cool is because he is the self insert for the affiliated. A historical game made by historical societies. I wish the AC community would talk more about the hidden history and how it ties to modern day/how the writers might be interpreting the context.
Ziio learned that Haytham did not fulfil his promise by ending the life of Edward Braddock. He merely injured him and Charles Lee came into the forest to make him aware that Edward passed to his injuries. Ziio became enraged. They parted ways which broke Haytham’s heart. This is from Assassins Creed Forsaken.
This was a very good deep dive into Haytham's character, I just wish you had talked about the conversation Connor and Haytham have in-game in the the course of their duel, because I think it implies an interesting perspective into Haytham's character; where Connor accuses Haytham of having succumbed to nihilism and is just taking it out on the world. If I'd lived Haytham's life, it would be hard not to do the same.
Great video, I missed the assassins creed the crusade book in the Altair video, thought it was due to this series being solely about the games but since you included forsaken here i gotta mention it!
Excellent video as always! Haytham is the best antagonist in the series by far, I knew so early on in the game though that he was a templar, I thought it was really obvious specifically because they didn't refer to themselves as assassins, the creed, or the brotherhood etc I love the differences between the novel and the game, they really reveal different facets of the character although some of the inconsistencies are annoying There are some incredible moments between father and son, I especially love the interaction on the rooftop, this was the first time I actually felt that the templars had a good point since AC1, in the Ezio trilogy they're just cartoon villains for Ezio to kill The Kenya Saga is my favourite era of the series, the relationships between the characters are the absolute highlight I do wonder why Rogue wasn't a Haytham game though, with him training Shay, it would have made far more sense and as you say it could really parallel his future relationship with Connor

You have to remember, Connor was open to welcome Haytham, but the boy was not stupid. Yes, Haytham shed some light on Ziio's death, but Connor saw that it was an attempt to worm inside his head and indoctrinate him to the Templars. Even the blantant "son!" confirms this. Haytham overrached, and Connor saw thorugh him.
I’ll be honest, I loved this character so much and I know my cousin did as well that I said, I wish we just had a full game that was focused on him instead of Conner or heck when they did Rogan instead of basing it on some unnamed character that clearly never existed before they should’ve done it on Haitham, and his story, which would’ve filled in the gaps of what happened in those 20 years and I think that would’ve been away more interesting game then what rogue did.
Haytham biggest failing is never realizing how far he, himself, had fallen. Trying to manipulate Connor with the information about Ziio's death is Birch using Edward's murder to indoctrinate him all over again. Connor was absolutely right to cut ties.
Quick TLDR; Haytam is my favorite character but loose ends in book and game makes me wish he had his own game Whatever book or game was right, I do believe Haytam's story has holes. For once I prefer the game that Haytam was unaware of Connor's existence and Ziio's death till confronted. Being the pragmatic idealist man he is I feel its in line with his character that after Ziio and he seperated that he focused back on his Templar beliefs with some regrets he shut off till confronted again with Connor and eventually asks in the warehouse. I do dislike the climax of both Book and game. The game does the cinematic climax better but does a Terrible job and tying the lose ends between them, first with the Washington reveal which is rlly glossed over and the final fight. The novel does the dialogue between them better but makes their fight less "cliche"/dramatic as its more a formal duel. This couldve been adressed into his own game, but ofc ubisoft decided on shay who also has lots of holes in his story/character as Rogue is a rushed game (Haytam was bit out of character/absent, and Shay's motivation has holes)
i dunno... i always thought Haythem was TRYING to be unbelievably evil, and i also subscribe that Haythem, who i believe would have two blades even in the book though it isnt stated(remember, it's a custom, and i have no doubt haythem couldve taken another or even had another made), meaning he would've HAD to have just ignored the chance to kill him. and again all the "charles will lead us" the brutality of trying to choke connor out, this doesnt sound like haythem at all but i think its intentional, as you mentioned, connor is obviously shaken when he takes a life, haythem is the only one to comfort him, if he comforted connor for killing HIM itd affirm there was good, which implies nother way couldve been taken. by being so evil, so mean, "frantic" even despite being composed enough to talk relatively calmly for a dying man who was just choking his son, which doesnt add up, hes making himself someone easier for his son to kill. he KNOWS hes the only chance at stopping connor, lee is a wimp and a pansy who probably cant actually fight much at all, even if he had the nerve to stand his ground. so he definitely isnt sacrificing himself to try and stop lees assassination, and he barely even talks about lee as he dies. he even says i SHOULD have killed you, not i WISH i killed you. hes speaking more to himself from how i see it, acknowledging and maybe even taking pride in the fact that his death was an intentional result of a loving act, not him fucking up on accident while doing the "smart" thing. not saying youre wrong or that you don't bring good points(i also think connor crawling towards haythem was just kinda off putting and didnt add up) i just think theres like... a LOT showing Haythem was bullshitting the fight (and while i do think Haythem is definitely a better fighter in his youth, i still think Haythem couldve bashed connor, especially because Connor got yanked by a cannon ball and then almost hit directly, by the end of the fight, sure haythem almost gets hit too, but now connor has been Yanked by a canon, which probably has his leg feeling like shit, almost blown up, beaten, cut, and bruised by his father, and THEN almost blown up again. if anyone had the logical upper hand, its definitely haythem, whos JUST starting to get a little too old. remember ezio was doing this shit at like 50 or smth so, old age doesnt always mean as much as it should in ac games)
