Why do we care how many suds are made from
SLS in soaps? The foaming agent does not cause cleaning? What does this show me for drinking water, for cleaning power, and family usage. I do not add more soap to see more foam. Does the “extra soap clean better?” What about the $30-$40 of salt per month to wash the resin beads and go down a drain? Does the salt less not soft water waste my well water on washing itself out? I am not sure I got your point.

The point is, with salt the water actually softens. The salt less conditioner not exactly softens it but conditions the water, kinda mimics softening is the point
Thanks for the hands on demonstration, and clear explanations. Personally, the notion of paying a pretty penny on a salt based water softener to save on soap never seemed compelling enough to ignore the environmental concerns of dumping so much salt into the drains. Environmentally friendly soaps that we have used for years tend to be less foamy anyway, so we're used to it, and spoiler alert: our quality of life did not end up suffering and somehow, we survived. If the salt-free conditioner can help reduce scaling inside appliances without dumping salt, that's good enough for me.
Finally, someone who speaks the truth! Really helped me learn the difference.

I am researching these two options as I plan on buying once I am confident in m6 decision. I have to say, the soap comparison does not help me decide which system I want.
I was in the same boat as you are. It came down to the cost for me. Water softeners are 5 times less than those massive water conditioners. If you think you don't have to do anything to the water conditioner, that's not true either, because you have to replace the activated charcoal inside in about 5 years.
What was the cost of the water wasted and salt used to soften the water?
This is the best explanatory video out there on this subject. I got rid of my salt based softener and replaced with aconditioner and am much happier with the results. Softeners are a maintenance nightmare and not the best for your health (or your pets).

How much soap suds up is probably the least important bit of information about the difference between these two things. I wish you would talk about what each one removes, how it removes it, what it leaves, its effect on scale, what it means for human and environmental health, etc.

Need to factor in the cost of salt with acwater softener which is about $9 a 40lb bag now. My water softener regenerates every night and I go through about 4 bags a month.

I was originally looking at getting the citric acid, salt-free softeners, ended up ordering a salt-based one.
I live in a house alone so I'm not going to use a ton of salt, probably only have to add 50lbs every 2-3 months, instead of once a month.

I hate the "greasy" feel of softened H2O but I have a brand new softener here in AZ because I was told I need to protect the pipes. That's the only thing I miss about WA. The H2O is so good there but doesn't feel gross to me like my salted H2O does. Is that normal? This video kind of makes me wish I'd gotten a conditioner instead 🤔

Salt free water softners don't soften the water. So, a harness test makes no sense. It will still come out as hard water. It only conditions the water.

good demonstration. I would however redo it with a few more facts. Hard water historically means that it is "Hard" to wash with soap (not detergent). Soft should be called easy, but it is not, they call it soft. It actually has more minerals than the untreated, as it has Na replacing Ca, so it is at least as conductive (ions). RO has very few remaining ions and minerals. If the goal is scale in water heaters, dishes and maybe pipes, which system is best (salt ion exchange or salt free chemical (Green Wave) or electro magnetic salt free conditioners)? I don't know, so i am curious what you think.
If someone has 7 GPG to 15 GPG city water, and wants to use a tankless water heater, i suspect that salt free is a better choice? If they instead have much harder water, like 25 - 35 GPG, does the choice change? In both cases, assume that 99% of all drinking water is from a sink RO system.
Is this why i it feels like i still have soap on me after rinsing when taking a shower.

Curious to know what is the harndess in gpg of your tap water in this demo? Is it 10 gpg or 30 gpg or 75 gpg for example?
I'm assuming he would be using city water, I can't imagine it would be over 20 gpg, the average in the US is probably closer to like 9 gpg.
Maybe I missed this. I don't care about suds, as long as the dishes get clean. I get the potential residue in the laundry, using vinegar as last rinse. I have a solar water heater and looking for a salt free system to extend the life of this heater. Salt has to replaced periodically. Where does the old flushed salt go? Groundwater? Thoughts.

So my 3rd or 4th softener recently died and wanted something salt free, well media free. I have a yarna now and i thought it would help with plumbing and maybe still offer some sort of feel benefits like softer hair for my wife, but she is still not happy. Will one of your conditioners provide some relief over untreated water? She even complained when we had a working softener but now it's worse. :) thanks in advance and I appreciated the video as it helped me understand the technical differences between the systems.
I have to be honest with you, I don't think one our salt free systems will make your wife happy. If she truly wants that "softer" feel, I think the only thing that she will like is a good water softener.

BUT be sure to put an RO system in your drinking water source OR HYPERTention may become a health problem. (excess sodium)

No. The water is still hard with a water conditioner. It just will not stick to your plumbing and fixtures.

I have a softener and it does work and I do save money. Detergents and soaps are not cheap but I won’t argue with ignorance from Wordsalad. Soaps and detergents must cost Pennie’s where he lives. @@axecuttimber8307 Sorry about that. That tests are sent to a nationally credited lab and that is the lead time they give us. There is a chance it could come sooner but unfortunately this is usually how long it takes.

Great but you cannot drink directly from a Water softener source. You need an additional filtration system for the softener in order to drink.

I have been trying to do research on water softeners and water softener alternatives. I don't really care about soap lather. I understand it is important. My scale is so bad, the elements on my water heater keep exploding after 2 months. My pots have hard scale on the bottom after I cook. I have no water heater right now and before we get one I need to fix the scaling issue. I have a loop to install something but I do not have a drain. If I get a water softener I have to dig up my yard and deal with the hoa and my neighbors to run a pipe, or I could get a softener alternative with no waste water. Would a water conditioner/salt water alternative be a good idea for my issue where I have so much calcium build up?
Yes, a salt free alternative will help you. Your water heater issues and scale build up in your plumbing should be resolved. You may still see some spotting on dishes and your pans because it is not technically soft water, but you will see far less of it.
Just concerned about the lifespan of the water tank heater, anyone else had the same issues with water softeners destroying their water tank heater?
Why would a water softner destroy water tank heater? Its supposed to remove the hard minerals preventing them from coating the inside cause inefficient heating. No salt is in the water so it is not supposed to damage the water heater only help. Thats my understanding
There is more to which one to pick than suds. My parents put in a salt unit, while it did help keep the film off of the shower doors, and faucets, there is a monthly cost of salt, labor, and wastewater, which is really bad. Also, now when they make tea, it taste terrible, so now they spend a lot more money buying tea from the store. So salt units have some good and some bad, plus I read they increase the sodium in the water, which is bad for your health, and likely why my parents don't like the taste of their home-brewed tea now.
I can buy in my area some "cationic resin filter" that should last like 6 months, as advertised. Is this a water softener where you replace the filter instead of regenerating it with salt? Or is it still a water conditioner? Thanks!

It's really based on water usage more than square footage. A family of 4 for example usually uses around 300 gallons of water per day.

I don’t like the slimy feel of trying to rinse soap off with a softener. I’ve gotta wipe and rinse 2 to 3 times as long to feel clean with softened water, compared to a whole house water filter.

USA made when ever possible. Some components like our fittings come from the UK and our resin we use in water softeners come from Taiwan.

This is somewhat misleading - You talk about cost savings of using less soap with softened water, but you leave out the cost of the salt needed each month to produce the soft water.

Your both wrong. Softener salt is about 8 dollars for a 40 lb bag. Do your research before you comment on someone’s video. Secondly the video isn’t misleading at all. The cost of salt is nothing compared to soaps and detergents
@@seanmcnally1132 Can't use regular salt, so I have to use Potassium salt, which is 4x the price. A giant container of Tide is $20 and that does 100 loads. Even with regular salt, the detergent does not cost significantly more and sometimes may cost less. An 8 pack of Irish spring body soap is $10. How expensive did you think detergent and soap were?

If the concentration of soup is equal at five drops in all three beakers, this does not change the strength of soap. Comparing suds to soap strength is like comparing medication effectiveness to blood type. This water comparison makes no scientific sense other than showing the chemical reaction of soap suds and water types. Nice try with your analogy!

There are some very scientific explanations to benefits of soft water and soap use. However, this a video to explain it in easy to relate terms. It isn't that the concentration has changed but that the effectiveness of the soap is reduced.

You don't need to spend thousands of dollars for a water softener. I mean, some are that expensive but those are for large applications not a typical residential home. Water Softeners and Water Conditioners are both close in price, we just wanted to demonstrate one of the difference each system has on your water.
@Jim Lash obviously you didn't understand the whole purpose of demostration and this video, so why to even comment? he is not showing you how much suds (only) you can get with soft water or save on soap :) it's not a SAVE SOAP commercial !!!
Justin C I guess you weren’t watching, the whole demonstration is suds. I do understand the differences, I would lean towards a conditioner myself. So maybe you should watch again. I would have reservations with floors in the shower being too slippery as well.
This is a one dimensional comparison. A no salt conditioner will be better at keeping your pipes clean, and is healthier for consumption. The water softner will bring about faster corrosion and will make the wayer feel oily.
