    A little less biased explanation would be a salt water softener works by removing the calcium and magnesium from the water, a salt free water conditioner separates the calcium from the magnesium so it can not form or at least reduces the formation of hard water. Water conditioners also remove chlorine and chloramine from water which are harmful for your plumbing and skin. A good water conditioner also provides drinking water to all fixtures.
    Mark is right there are hack plumbers out there claiming to have salt free water softeners and that is wrong, but there are certain benefits of a water conditioner that salt systems don't offer.
    It's really personal preference as long as you have the facts. Also some counties don't allow salt softeners because of the discharge water.
    Thanks for the video Mark

      @@stacyjones2893 GBJR and Stacy Jones, You are both wrong. 1) Salt Free water conditioner does not separate the calcium and magnesium! 2) Salt Free water conditioners "do not" remove chlorine and or chloramine! 3) Cheap "garbage" salt water softeners are typically $800.00 to @1200.00 Better quality more effective units can run around $2K to $4K. I don't like that these companies call their units "softeners" (I was looking at a KIND unit, and they call them softeners, when they are not) I'd like to see an honest full comparison considering sodium, soap use, ease of use, maintenance, etc. Everyone seems to have an angle, while trying to come off as impartial.

    What he doesn't mention is that softened water may make great suds but it's no good to drink. If you use a water softener, then you need a reverse osmosis system (now you can get drinkable water at one place in your house that has no minerals and tastes lousy) or use bottled water. For me, I went with no-salt conditioning and a whole house filter. Now I have good tasting water from every tap, no scale, no chemicals (like chlorine) and I feel clean when I get out of the shower. Also, the dry, scaly spots I was getting on my calves went away within a week.

    In North Texas along the Red River most of the water is super salty. Lake Texoma can self sustain the ocean dwelling striped bass because it’s so salty. These same lakes provide the drinking water for many communities. Mine is one of them . The water at the tap in our neighborhood measures 800 on a TDS meter with sodium representing the greatest solute. Nevertheless, the water tests show a hardness of around 15 gpm. In this situation what is best? Adding a water softener with a pre-filter for sediment and a pre-filter carbon filter after the sediment filter actually raises the TDS to over 1100! Super salty tasting too. Any recommendations?

    • @uswatersystems
      @uswatersystems  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I would recommend a Reverse Osmosis System for drinking water. An RO will lower your TDS by 90 to 95 percent and it will also remove the salt giving you great tasting water. Soft water is safe to drink. Depending on how hard your water is, softening the water can add about 20 to 30 milligrams of sodium to a glass of water. In comparison this is still much lower sodium than a glass of milk, diet soda or orange juice. As far as the environmental impact, you are correct, the sodium in the waste water can have a negative affect on the environment. I disagree. I use a salt based water softener, I do not like the fact that I have to use salt that gets flushed into the drain, but leaving that aside, the concern over the salt content at the faucet is exaggerated. I have installed a reverse osmosis water filtering system under the sink in the kitchen, that further reduces as I understand sodium content and many other minerals, data available in the public domain shows 98% efficiency of such filtering system.
      How much sodium you take in when you consume the filtered (reverse osmosis) water in this setup ? Absolutely negligible, with this type of setup, you have to be more worried about the lapse in will, that results in eating a cracker a day, or drinking some tomato juice, or eating a slice of bread, they all have salt. This is where I focus, buying groceries with low salt content, buying raw meat, vegetables, etc, instead of processed foods, so I can have a say in how much sodium enters my body, and this focus keeps me healthy.

    Salt Free systems don't remove minerals like calcium and magnesium. They crystalize them so they don't stick to pipes and other surfaces. The minerals will always be in the water but won't create hard scale. It might produce soft scale that can be wiped up. It all depends on what you want. Some people have to go with no salt or potassium options because of preference or regulations. If you want to remove minerals and truly make your water soft, then you are going to have to live with salt, potassium, or a filter.

As to the extent of how effective conditioners are, at the process of preventing scaling, that's debatable and dependent upon the system being utilized. Beyond concerns of scaling are deposits within plumbing, including the washing machine and dish washer, and hot water heater. There's also the issue of clothes not being properly cleaned, even if you've a marginal benefit of lessening scale by altering the structure of some minerals within the water through a conditioner. Again, a conditioner doesn't remove, but instead alters the structure of the minerals. The housing filters that typically come with such systems do not remove them, either.

This is one case where a salt-free water conditioner definitely has an advantage over a water softener.

  • @xuscbs

    Why do I care if the water is soft, hard, tough, macho, weak, brave, cowardly, or whatever? I couldn't care less what adjective you label it with. Personally, all I want is water that's not going to ruin my appliances and form scale while it's still safe to drink and use. If there's a way to do that while keeping the Ca and Mg in the water, that's more than fine! If all you're concerned about is suds, then don't worry, the detergent we buy today has a softening agent in it. For me, it's a very secondary concern, my main concern is my pipes and appliances. I think you're worked up over nothing, and you're hung up on lingo and a technicality that we, consumers, couldn't care less about.

    • @uswatersystems
      @uswatersystems  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He can be very passionate about this subject XD. You are right, the main reason for either system is to protect your plumbing and both systems do that. The rest comes down to preference. Softened water does have benefits that a conditioner does not though, and it goes beyond suds. Softened water removes spots from your faucets, appliances and dishes. You also save money on detergents as soft water requires very little soap for laundry. Soft water also keeps laundry brighter and whiter. Conditioned water can not do any of this. These to me are the large benefits that Soft Water has over Conditioned water. It's good to know the difference as a consumer and know that a Salt-Free water Softener does not exist. But like you said, it all comes down to if these things matter to you or not.

    • @xuscbs
      @xuscbs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for the response. I suppose calling it salt-free "softener" is technically incorrect by definition like the presenter said, so they made a mistake there for sure, but it's not worth getting "mad" about it as long as they're not really cheating and promoting a product that doesn't do the main job. Again, I bet that for most people, at least myself, the main concern is the appliances and plumbing, the other benefits you pointed out, while very desirable, are still secondary. What I suggest you do instead of lashing out at those people for using the incorrect terminology is to point out the pros and cons for each method, objectively and based on science. That would be more useful to the consumer and would help each one of us make a decision on which way to go. For example, for me, some of the pros of softening: it protects my appliances effectively. Cons: that slimy feeling in the shower that I can't stand and the concern about the salt in the water that I don't want. Also wasting water to clean the resin and the environmental effect of dumping salt. Some of the pros for conditioning: I still have the desirable Ca and Mg and don't have the undesirable salt. Cons: there's no clear measure for its effectiveness like # of grains in the case of softening, so I'm not completely sure it works effectively, also, I'd be concerned about water pressure because the filter is much smaller. Things like that would be more helpful. Thanks again! Your videos are very informative, nonetheless, and appreciated.

      I am not being snarky, but try...try this experiment. Take a "clean" washed facecloth that you washed in your salt-less system, stick it in a bowl with 1 cup of soft or purified (not spring) water. Let it soak for 2 minutes and wring it out. Look at what that water left behind. You wear that in your clothes. Pour it in a bottle, give it a fair shake... where did those bubbles come from? Detergent, its a dried acid on your clothes and towels, sweat-activated, causes rashes and skin irritation. Just pointing it out. Good luck either way.

    Wow, your bias is palpable. You basically confirm that water conditioners preform the main function of a water softner (eliminating scale build up). While some may love the idea of more suds / using less soap, that isn't the end all be all of why most people want a water softener. ((Plus the number one complaint of softeners is the feel on their skin which is caused by the salt)) So while I get you have beef with those companies that use the word "softener" in their name, you should have used this video to compare the two products fairly on their pros and cons as personally I'd opt for keeping the minerals in the water despite needing to use more soap as long as the scale build up is eliminated either way.

    Stopped @ 0:35 A traditional "salt" water softener should and does reduce/remove hardness minerals to produce "soft water". However, if the "salt" water softener is either not set up correctly and or not functioning correctly (of which happens all too often), the minerals may not be removed and (hard water) minerals are allowed to flow into the home or business!
    @3:33 Your argument about "salt" soft water vs No Salt Softener is partially true. Yes the "so called" no salt softener "may" help prevent scale buildup and no it won't allow such high suds of soap. However, "most" soaps in today's world have their own water conditioners that allow better suds in hard water!!!!
    Folks, maybe you want the benefits of a "salt" water softener. Then again you may not! Particularly so if you are on a low salt diet/consumption. When you bath and or shower, your body will naturally absorb salt!
    As the water softener man says, there isn't such a thing as a "no salter water SOFTENER". But no salt water "CONDITIONERS" are an extremely effective way to control hard water issues such as scale and better soap suds, etc!
    Keep in mind two very important points. 1) A no salter water "CONDITIONER" will always be working to prevent scale formation "and" remove existing scale thus keeping your plumbing and water heaters clear and working at optimal efficiency! While on the other hand >>> 2) A "salt" water softener "may if working correctly" prevent hard water scale formation. What it doesn't/cannot do is remove existing scale! You combine salt and scale in a hot water and you will surely have corrosion and a leaking tank failure.
    At the end of the day, although Mr. US Water Systems is promoting his business prospects, I agree on the fact that there isn't a "no salt water softener" presently on the market and everyone should be extremely dubious of such marketers!!!!

There’s benefits to both systems and also downsides to both systems. Be better... Don’t bash the other system just to protect your own. Also, why is the water conditioned water tinted to look dirty? Water softeners shouldnt change the color of the water assuming the water used in these “tests” came from the same water source.

Water conditioners do work but the appearance and behavior of the water is different than that of a water softener and that is why his little beaker demonstration seems to not make sense at first glance. He is exploiting your ignorance to sell you a water softener and bully the water conditioner companies and anyone else considering purchasing a water conditioner.

    It's unfortunate that you claim to be giving unbiased information...but your expirament is pretty biased. Why don't you repeat that same expirament with "normal" soap. Like the same soap that 99.9% of regular people will buy at the store instead of using whatever "pure" soap you have in that little bottle. Your little expirament won't be nearly as dramatic... In general, I agree with the points you are making, but you are using a VERY biased and unrealistic demo (the same demo I've had demonstrated at my house by sales people trying to push a sale) that doesn't represent reality. You are guilty of using the same marketing tactics as you are bashing... Grrrrr
