Do not buy the HALO-5. I have one and looking to replace it. There are so many lawsuits now that outline that product doesn't work and is breaking down and making your water worse. I wonder if Roger was paid by Halo Water Systems
The color of primer I use depends upon the installation. If I were installing a sprinkler manifold it would be purple. Anything in a home that is visible i like to make it pretty and clear works for me. You can always tell when it has been primed using the purple.
OMG. I thought this was going to be your typical review or instructional video. Timely, considering I'm in a market for a whole house filtration system. But geez, by the end I realized we were invited to watch a business sent off over the literal cliff. What I needed was a brand Roger would recommend. I think I'm going with Halo now.
I install water softeners with salt tanks it's a brand called Marlo it looks just like that with the two valves in the back. It's interesting to me that you're by pass is in the yard we usually install them right behind the unit. Marlo also lets you set the time it regens and it will let you set how many days or gallons used. The standard is every 14 days or after 1200 gallons of use. I use clear primer for the most part but some counties require that you use purple to pass inspection.
The reason it looks the same and fits so well is because it's the exact same valve. It's called a clack valve. It's a good valve. It's built in the United States. It's been around for a very long time. I think about 35 years we used to sell them at my company. A bunch of companies, including Halo by the valve and then build a proprietary circuit board for them so that they look different. But it really comes down to is the materials inside. Most importantly, what kind of carbon are they using for filtration, coconut shell, bone shaw, charcoal carbon? Really important from a longevity standpoint as well as an effectiveness standpoint. Also important to consider if there's kdf in the system or any other sort of oxidation media to help with contaminants the carbon misses.
They're using activated and centaur carbon, a scale reducing media, and filter ag. I hate these mixed bed systems because they have to be replaced more frequently. Same as the old mixed bed softeners. I want to know what problems he was having with that other system and if it was supposed to be Up flow or down flow. No directional arrows were shown and since they're likely the exact same multi-stage system I can't imagine what happened. Carbon dust is the biggest problem I've had with them.
I checked my hometown's own water quality. Turns out, they got about 13 total contaminants with 11 exceeding the recommended guidelines of the EWG. Their water is sourced from groundwater, so it's a good thing I got a Zero Water filter of my own for drinking.
If you put the filter head into backwash, pull the plug, turn off water, then disconnect your unions it relieves some of the pressure in the tank and makes less of a mess.
I had a company stop replacing a water pump for my indoor water fall that had a 25 year warranty. I had to replace it what it seemed every year or so, the propeller would seize. They told me it was because my water was to hard and causing the issue. but yet nothing in their warranty said anything about pretesting your water, that water hardness affects the pump, etc. Great 25 year warranty with loophole that doesnt exist to save themselves money
Pretty interesting setup, so your water filter regens into a storm drain? Why doesn’t the filter regen based on how many gallons flowed through it since the last regen

In South Dakota, Purple is not mandated by code, and so nobody uses it. We all think Purple'd joints look like crap. Unpurple primer is expensive, so nobody uses that either. Just sits on the shelves
Thank you for not completely side stepping on speaking out on the owners actions. The whole "If you can't say anything nice don't say anything." doesn't fly when doing a review.
For over 50 years, right or wrong. On pressure lines I used purple then clear. Purple to start the pvc softening so that the clear glue makes a stronger connection but i would not apply street pressure until that glue connection has set for 18-24 hours. Old school.
The Halo is a great water treatment system. It is not on the other hand. A water softener. One of their sales reps approached our company many years ago and sold us these really nice whole home water treatments softeners. So we sold them and got a lot of very angry customers. Where I live. the water hardness is between 13-50 grains of hardness depending on the city. customers were getting white powder covering their showers and non of their hard water problems were being fixed. If you want great drinking water and not showering in chemicals. The Halo is great. Specially if paired with an actual water softener.
You make the valid point that ALL systems have a fiber tank but some have a pretty stainless cover. Nearly all of the heads operate nearly identical so there is not all that much difference between brands. You never address the reasons that caused bad performance. Was it improper media in the tank or too low a back-flush rate that did not clean the tank or what was the root of the failure ?
My purple joints look amazing but there is no code in Texas that says your primer has to be purple. Plumbers tell helpers to do that I believe thinking the inspector will see purple primer and green tag it even though the glue they use which is 100 times more important is clear because they are to cheap to by grey or blue glue or any medium body glue. Btw I will debate anyone who tries to tell me its not glue it’s solvent cement. If it’s solvent cement bonding material at the molecular level then you must not know what a molecule is.
Dude it's the exact same valve. Clack valves had stayed the same pretty much forever every company just changes the board a little bit to add more or less buttons. You installed a mixed bed carbon/ scale reduction system which won't soften water, will only work a few years before the media needs to be replaced. Because it's mixed bed the carbon and the scale reducing media will have to be changed together independently of whether or not one is still good. I am interested in figuring out what your problem with that other system was. You said it was bad customer service which I get. I'm just wondering what the actual problem was with the system because they're pretty much the exact same thing.
What about water filtering systems for well water. The local plumbing company wants to sell me this water softening system that I have to add salt minerals to, but I need to remove minerals from my water. I have a high amount of iron in my water along with calcium and other minerals that clog up my aerators in my faucets.
Salt softener system mostly takes care of calcium and magnesium, the iron will eventually stop the resin up. They sell a bunch of different Iron filters that will go in before the softener though, I'd recommend getting one to extend the life of the softener.
It would be good to get your water tested by a state approved compliance lab since you are on a well. An approved compliance lab will test your water with a GS/MS machine that will give you a report that is the gold standard in the water filtration industry. It is highly accurate and precise. That way you have an idea of the water you are dealing with. Contact a water quality specialist. What is a high amount of iron? Do you see staining in sinks? A softener can remove up to 3ppm of iron. And 3ppm of iron will cause staining. Above 3ppm and you will need some additional equipment for effective removal and be aware it can get expensive to remove iron.

Did you intentionally have the hosebibs on soft water or was the house built with no loop and you had to do it like that?. When we build new plumbing, we separate the hosebibs on a single hard water line and the house on another line, that way when the custome uses the hosebibs for gardening, it will not end the life of the softner prematurely
I have been installing Flowtechs for years and my customers love them I’ve had great support from plumbers choice and to be honest this is the first time I’ve heard anything bad.
I just had a Flow-Tech Max water descaler installed in my home to replace a failed water softener. I really hope I didn't just make a mistake. It was recommended by my plumber.
I’ve installed a few and haven’t had any issues. But in my experience Halo is top of the line in home water treatment. This coming from a plumber who also was in municipal water treatment and distribution for 7 years
But you said you liked yours? They only filter I stand by for past 20 years and probably the next 20 years are made by 3m. And if your customer can’t afford a stainless steel all weather filtration plant you can even buy a 3m filter that you just throw in a cheap 10” can.
I use purple primer and clear glue. I have thought about trying the blue glue. Im not a pro just a homeowner. And thats how you show a company. You dont be flamboyant about it. You do it in a discrete way.
the blue sets very fast, do not try it on anything over 1-1/2" and then if your not fast it will skin over and you'll have bad joints. I have used it on 4" pvc before, talk about a nightmare, although it can be done with two people and very fast work. use it outdoors only, because you'll have primer and glue flung everywhere to get it assembled fast enough.
You mentioned in your video that you have installed several FlowTechs and you/customers were very happy with them. As of this recording, you have also stated you have installed several Halo systems and you/customers are very happy with them - therefore, it appears both systems started out-of-the-gate with positive results. EWG is a private advocacy corp. All the information is compiled from local muni water systems CCRs or Consumer confidence reports. Also called a water quality report. Far and away better to just google "your town's name water quality report" - it will usually be the first hit, and then contact the water department if you have questions.
you should put in backwash then close the valves so it drains first. had you done that there would not be that spray. Ands you need a clack wrench . Where is the air gap on that drain line? It should be in backwash when you fill the tank with water ....
I'm associated with a facility that was originally equipped with a Culligan water softener. every time it needed serviced the nearest tech was 100 miles further away. we now get our service through a family company relatively nearby - and they happen to carry Kinetico products.
Most big box brands are made by either Ecowater or Hague. Ecowater is the largest manufacturer of domestic ion exchange systems. This would include Whirlpool, Kenmore, North Star - what you get with these is a lower spec Ecowater softener that is perfectly fine. Ecowater branded softeners are sold by dealers and have all the bells and whistles. Stay far away from junk brands like Fleck. I've never heard of either of these brands in the video, but they appear to be marketed by plumbers. Which explains a lot. If you have a water quality problem best to contact a water quality specialist instead.
Allowed is a different word than recommended. Not disagreeing with you, but unfortunately the utility providers are within the law because the laws are super outdated to newer standards
always make sure the inlet and outlet are on the correct side. I have seen plenty where inlet and outlet are reversed from one another! Nothing ruins your day like plumbing one reversed and having some of the filter media get out into water lines and clog faucets, solenoids, fill valves, aerators. there's always some filter media that escapes the first few cycles from factory assembly, usually it's minimal and only out the drain during initial backwash, except when plumbed backwards 🤣
I'm trying to find a good whole house filtration system that filters out containments, fluoride, chlorine and PSFAS or whatever they are called, micro plastics/forever chemicals. What do you recommend that isn't going to cost me an insane amount of money? Thank you in advance.
I Love Halo 5 let’s promote water quality awareness! I’ve installed many of these and even one H2Zero I like to install a hose bib and ball valve on the outlet for first install to flush out for at least 45 minutes while doing the first couple regens before letting water into the home.
You could have swapped the valve and been done. I would add a spindown pre filter and one or two 4.5x20 before the backwashing one you got there. Fleck or Clark 3 button valves valves work fine.
What i can say is that the PVC glue will melt luxury vinyl plank. I installed a central vac, it uses the same glue, knocked the can over, and it left a little divot in the tile even after quickly wiping up.
Read the instruction manual specific to your unit. Some media requires being flushed and soaking for a set amount of time prior to installation. That Halo is a nice system. I also like the pelican systems by pentair.
Ive never seen a house with that bypass setup...makes so much sense...I'm thinking about acquiring my first house soon...I'm always interested in finding little things like that to include when I have to repair or replace different systems or things...I've been around construction for a good while and I see brand new houses with horrible windows and doors... either barely any or horrible quality insulation ETC...and I'm like wow this will be a nightmare in 10 years and it's going to cost a fortune to heat and cool with a discount scratch and dent unit from 3 years ago that was poor quality back then lol. I'm one of those people that think it's worth spending extra money on things that count. High efficiency heat and a/c, high efficiency water heaters, insulation, windows, doors, electrical, plumbing, roof, fixtures, flooring and yes sheetrock...don't put the awful 1/2 inch stuff in...your wife hangs two pictures in one spot and it's falling apart...also tape seal spray foam caulk everything you would be surprised how bad alot of house's are...I want to build a house that I can keep for many years and even if I move out 15 years later I'll feel good about the house I'm selling to some young couple as their first home...if we all helped others that deserve help we would all be much better off as a species...if someone works hard help them...if they are lazy and slimy snakes in the grass get out your lawn mower and cut the grass on the lowest setting...they make bush hogs for larger enemies I mean difficult areas...

Can you pair that with a water softener? Any softener brands steer clear of (other than big box store brands)?
I'm associated with a facility that was originally equipped with a Culligan water softener. every time it needed serviced the nearest tech was 100 miles further away. we now get our service through a family company relatively nearby - and they happen to carry Kinetico products.
Yes you can
Most big box brands are made by either Ecowater or Hague.
David Johnson shaking his head right now "Na na naa...I messed up bad...should've treated all my customers with respect" 😢
I heard you should never put glue on the female connecter because you can clog up the inside of the pipe. On the male end it only gets pushed out.
Read the instructions on the can. It’s conveniently located on the can.
Hi Roger,
How's the system doing? Is it maintenance free? I have a watts and I am needing to get rid of it.
Still going great! Love the Halo brand
I'm trying to find a good whole house filtration system that filters out containments, fluoride, chlorine and PSFAS or whatever they are called, micro plastics/forever chemicals. What do you recommend that isn't going to cost me an insane amount of money? Thank you in advance.
My company quit using those for similar reasons and some other things
I would love to hear your story…
The ewg website doesn't work
www.ewg.org
I Love Halo 5 let’s promote water quality awareness!
I’ve installed many of these and even one H2Zero I like to install a hose bib and ball valve on the outlet for first install to flush out for at least 45 minutes while doing the first couple regens before letting water into the home.
What do you pay for them? Can't find a quote on the unit anywhere
@@timadams9447 lol same. I’m searching unit for my wife and Halo 5 pop up. But website doesn’t have a price so I’m checking TH-cam for reviews
5 stage what is it a 5 stage multimedia?
You could have swapped the valve and been done. I would add a spindown pre filter and one or two 4.5x20 before the backwashing one you got there. Fleck or Clark 3 button valves valves work fine.
What i can say is that the PVC glue will melt luxury vinyl plank. I installed a central vac, it uses the same glue, knocked the can over, and it left a little divot in the tile even after quickly wiping up.
We got all of our equipment from Charger Water Treatment in Fort Worth, Bill Hall was the manager iirc. Good guy.
Roger, I use purple primer so I can see it. I’m contacting HALO to see about upgrading my whole house system.
Hey Roger ,
What issues did you have with the filter aside from the issue with their support ?
I didn't really have any issues with it...that's the sad part. The product for what it is, is good...
Read the instruction manual specific to your unit. Some media requires being flushed and soaking for a set amount of time prior to installation. That Halo is a nice system. I also like the pelican systems by pentair.
Thank your for the website to look at the water contaminants
My arsenic is 1552x the EWG health guideline
Roger Where can I buy this water filter system?
You can buy the halo water filter off their website
Thanks!
No problem! Are you thinking about getting a water filter system?
I already love your content but using clips from CodyKo and Noel took it beyond over the top for me, epic!
im getting ready to but i new whole home system glad i seen this vid. i didnt even think of customer service or other issues like that
Ive never seen a house with that bypass setup...makes so much sense...I'm thinking about acquiring my first house soon...I'm always interested in finding little things like that to include when I have to repair or replace different systems or things...I've been around construction for a good while and I see brand new houses with horrible windows and doors... either barely any or horrible quality insulation ETC...and I'm like wow this will be a nightmare in 10 years and it's going to cost a fortune to heat and cool with a discount scratch and dent unit from 3 years ago that was poor quality back then lol.
I get the impression that Roger doesn't like Flowtech anymore. I may be wrong.
Was it something I said? 🤣
Love the Halo Stage 5 filters. Its all i install. Also If you do spill your purple primer usually clear primer will remove it..
Does the halo remove heavy iron?
Dang my water has 69x the limit of chloroform 439x the limit of trihalomethanes and a bunch other over the safe limits. Not really all that surprising considering we have had boil notices a couple different times in the past few years...
It's not the legal limit, it's the limit set by EWG, which is almost nonsensical and sensational to provoke shock and scare.
@@kylekirby6424 Yea I figured that. It does sound crazy when you hear 400x+ the safe limit.
I use Blue Monster pvc glue. 1 step solution that already has primer in it
Great video Roger !, I would like to know what problems you had with flo tech, besides their customer service, thanks 😊
I didn’t really have any problems with it, but their customer service was terrible and the owner treated my staff poorly. I don’t support brands with those values
@@RogerWakefield Thanks 😊 🙏
@@privateaccount9835 the way David Johnson treated my office staff and our customer is why I did this video. I had to pay for everything to fix that. To take care of our customer. If a company won’t stand behind their product, people need to know. He is the owner of the company and he treats people like trash. That’s not right…
@@RogerWakefield Hmmm something fishy here. Could "Private Account" be a shill for David Johnson? Or David Johnson himself? One bad customer service experience is plenty when the customer service is coming from the owner.
@@RogerWakefieldu probably wanted a spiff to promote it and u didn’t get now ur crying hahaha , flow tech is awesome and customers love it!!
Great video...hope David Johnson watches it.
Me too…👀
Why don’t you do some videos on backflows ?
Thought on Water Right filter systems
Not too familiar with those...do you have one?
Clear primer and grey glue and Sch 80 PVC never sch 40 unless it's existing.
What do you think about the Culligan whole house filter system?
I don't have much experience with those...I've heard they are good
I know David Johnson personally
Never had an issue
Always very helpful
Wish he dealt with every customer that way…
As far as I can tell, you didn't actually explain what is wrong with Flowtech.
Their customer service..
Saw the Nitrox cylinder, are you a diver?
I do dive, yes
WHAT are you re-generating... water softener. Most homes don't need it, but do need a sediment and carbon filter system
Active Flo is really nice for softer water with out the slippy feel
I have my own water. my filter system is two omnifilters running in parallel.
Halo and Sterling filtration systems are amazing.
I love the halo system, I haven’t tried sterling. Which one do you have?
I use clear primer
Are you not worried about water hardness? This must be a carbon filter which removes a whole lot, just doesn't soften water
Halo has a water softener but if you don't need it no reason to put one on
You never use the original connectors that voids the warranty of the new system.
Oregon code says PvC is illegal inside the house.
Even for a drain line?
@RogerWakefield Yup. It must be rated for hot water, CPVC. Only. Pvc cannot be used within the foundations of a house.
Really, CPVC for drains? Do y'all use any ABS or Cast Iron?
@RogerWakefield Yes we use ABS all the time, Anything that has to do with potable water, Cannot be PVC. It does get used as drain line schedule 40., But anything else that has potable water has to be pex, copper, galvanized, cpvc,
@RogerWakefield Even the T&P valve on a water heater has to be either CPVC or copper or galvanized
i guess they are charging for the list now. I put in my zip code and got a page asking me to donate.
you shouldn't have to pay...it's a free site
