- The Don Nehlen era of Mountaineer Football begins! The 1980 team went 6-6 for its first non-losing season in five years, and it felt great. John Denver put in an appearance at the home opener, playing (of course) "Country Roads," which will no doubt get me a "3rd party music" notice.

My Dad hired Don Nehlen and opened Mountaineer Field...my Uncle designed the WVU logo!!!
That's awesome, go 'eers
Thanks for the uploads!
I met Don Nehlen when he visited a local mall in 1983. He was a great coach who also had a great opinion of himself.
That year the QB was Oliver Luck, father of Stanford alumni Andrew Luck.
1980 was a special year for WVU football.New culture and stadium.WVU started to emerge during the Nehlen era.
Hard to believe it’s been 41 years ago
I'm a lifelong fan and alum of Ohio State, but I always liked the program in Morgantown, especially under Don Nehlen.
RIP Robert Alexander
I always wondered how we could go in seasons and beat good teams and lose to bad teams. That's not a sign of good coaching , yet I think Don nehlen was a wonderful coach and helped bring us the fame that out us on the map
Also the first season with the blue jerseys/blue helmets with yellow pants look as well as the stylised "WV" logo, all of which survive today to a certain extent.
Oliver Luck later became athletic director at West Virginia University.
Nehlen put together some great teams. Unfortunately, they weren't fully rewarded with at least one national championship. They certainly had the horses to get it done.
the stadium sure looks bare compared to today
Those "turf shoes" lol Who owned a pair?
What Season you uploading next
I've run out of highlight videos. Fans sent me boxes of old season highlight DVR tapes, but those are all done. Now you can see WVU season highlights right on TH-cam from the University, so there's no more for me to do.
